The prettiest harbor in Maine
Georgetown sits on the island of the same name, and is renowned for having the prettiest harbor in Maine. The town was founded in the early 18th century, before which the native Abenaki Indians inhabited it. They called the island Erascohegan, meaning good spear fishing, and they weren't wrong. The deep cold waters around the island teem with lobsters and marine life. If you love seafood, be sure to visit the Five Islands Lobster Co. which serves up freshly steamed clams and some of the best lobster rolls in the state.
Taste artisanal local produce at the market
In town, you can visit Georgetown Pottery which makes fine, hand-painted porcelain with a focus on coastal themes and marine life. Just up the road in nearby Bath, food lovers can visit the farmers' market on Saturdays which specializes in delicious local produce including artisanal cheese, jams, and cured meats. While you're in town, why not go to the Marine Maritime Museum which chronicles the rich shipbuilding history of the state and has been voted one of the best nautical museums in the world.
A mild, year-round destination
Though the island is busiest in summer, the Georgetown vacation rentals are open all year round. Spring is typically warm with clear sunny skies and is best spent hiking or mountain biking along the trails in Reid State Park, or gorging on freshly caught lobsters. It can get a little humid in the summer, but the island enjoys glorious sea breezes, particularly when kayaking out on the ocean. During fall, the melting sunsets match the colors of the forests, and December to February brings flurries of snow and the opportunities for winter sports.

Georgetown Island is blanketed in thick pristine woodland which is home to many species of wildlife. Moose meander through the marshland, while deer bound through the forests. Beavers can occasionally be seen damming up the streams and coyotes and foxes roam along the rocky coast. The island is also a birder's paradise and home to noisy puffins and bald eagles which circle on the thermals overhead.
