Looking for a Relaxing and Fun getaway? Enjoy Richardson Ocean Park located just a few minutes walk from this Hawaiian retreat. Located on the sunny end of Hilo and the most popular recreational shoreline on the east side of The Big Island. You will find this recently remodeled home has privacy along with all the comforts and emenities for a relaxing comfortable vacation. Many vacation rentals are ocean front with views but few have such great accessability to the ocean with sandy beaches and are a long way from town or stores. The location of this home offers so much more than just private luxury. This is the only rental in the neighborhood off the sometimes noisy beach frontal road. Although only a have block off the main street and the ocean still very visible you will be close to but not amidst the weekend crowd and traffic. Wander down the park and you will find yourself engulfed in the local Hawaiian culture. Even from the porch you will hear the children playing and smell the BBQs of family gatherings although early mornings and late afternoons you can find yourself the only one arround. Richardson's Ocean Park is very popular for those with children due to easy access and sheltered lagoons and lifeguards on duty It was donated by the Richardson Family for the purpose of marine life preservation. All pictures were taken within two blocks of this home. Get the feel of old Hawaii wandering the paths around ancient fish ponds, tidepools, discovering treasures along the shore and meeting the local people. Watch surfers, net fisherman, or swim with the hundreds of varieties of tropical fish and search for turtles. Whales come yearly in the winter months, and can't be missed spouting and breaching just off shore. This 3 bedroom home is surrounded by a small tropical garden and even has a lava tube (cave) with a small fish pond. The home's large master bedroom also has a single bed for possibly that child needing to be close to Mom and Dad. There is a small desk, looking out to the ocean, Wi-Fi and printer. The kitchen is modern, fully equipped with most the gadgets a gourmet chief might need. Many hours can be spent enjoying the sights and sounds from the porch, enjoying the hammock, or just watching the geckos. However; the most redeeming feature of this home is the location. This is not Waikiki and you will not find any luxury resorts. This is a very lush tropical area and here you will share the jungle with not only geckos and birds, but also mongoose, wild chickens and coqui frogs feral cats, dragon flies and occasionally a pig. Hilo is unique in Hawaii. You will experience the 'real' Hawaii here. Hilo has the largest percent of Native Hawaiian population anywhere in the state and people here are happy and in their pidgin dialect always willing to 'talk story' of their lives and culture for those that are curious. Old Town Hilo with it's famous farmers market still retains the feeling of the sugar cane empire with it's turn of the century architecture. Take the scenic drive up the Hamakua Coast to Waipio Valley. Don't forget your swim suit when driving down along the Red Road Coastline. You won't want to miss a stop to soak in the warm pond. Along with a trip to Hawaii Volcano National Park and up to the summit of Mauna Kea (13,796 ft.) for sunset and you will leave Hilo with memories and experiences you will only find on the windward side of the Big Island of Hawaii. Check the location of your prospective vacation rental. This is a big island and many rentals can be very isolated. This home is close to the airport, and all shops and attractions of Hilo Town.
I do not have an empire of vacation rentals. I am not a Landlord Mogul, Real Estate Agent or Property Manager. This is the only home I own and is my personal residence part of the year. Just need to rent this home so I can pay the bills and also enjoy staying here as much as possible.

About Steve Walsh (Owner)
After years of vacationing to Hawaii, camping around all the islands, I came to Hilo. I found a place rich in music and arts. The people are happy, kind, open minded thinking. And the climate is perfect !!! This side of the Big Island is a lot like the culture and green environment I was used to in my rural Northern California home. I just felt like I fit in here better than anywhere else in Hawaii and so when the chance came, I moved. Scary as it was moving alone to a strange land with nothing but two suit cases, I have no regrets.

Pleasant Stay, Excellent Accommodations
Spacious, well-appointed home. Clean and well organized. Across the street from a beautiful beach with superb snorkeling. On my first day I swam with two sea turtles! Took full advantage of the hot tub and lounged on the wrap around deck. Beautifully landscaped and a quaint town full of wonderful restaurants just a short drive away. Steve was easy to work with. Exceeded my expectations. Hope to be back again next year!
Lovely home near Richardson's Beach
We loved our stay here in large home. We were 4 adults and there was plenty of room. We often ate out on covered deck, very pleasant even if raining. The massage chair was fun! Nice that the master suite and the other 2 bedrooms are on opposite sides of house for privacy. The frogs put us to sleep every night and the roosters woke us up. Otherwise very quiet, well, except for house construction across the street. House had a few minor issues but Steve responded promptly. Great to have good washer/dryer. We often dried our towels daily since they never dried on towel bars! We found snorkel masks and fins to fit everyone so nice not to have to rent. Location was good, not far from downtown and several good restaurants. Steve's "House Book" was very helpful with many suggestions. Bottom line: we'd love to return next time we are in Hilo.
Nice enough house, but too many maintenance and cleanliness issues.
This property is just not worth the amount of money charged. Upon arrival discovered a leaking toilet, but that was taken care of the same day. Spent the second day scouring tub and toilet, striping beds and washing sour smelling sheets, then shopping for pillows as there were only two that did not reek of body odor. Not the way I had planned my vacation! Plus the dishwasher doesn't work. It is a nice enough house in a great location, but the discusting bed situation was totally unacceptable. The owner said he was sorry and would address these issues immediately, but that doesn't help us. I really hate to leave a negative review, but maybe if another guest had pointed out these things we could have saved ourselves some time and money.
It is Heartbreaking for me to receive my first poor review. UnfortunateIy the weather was wet and very humid for this guests visit and I feel they may have been disheartened because they did not get the sunny Hawaiian vacation they may have dreamed of. Living close to the shoreline in a rain forest does create a constant battle against the corrosion created by salt air and moisture. My phone number, my maintenance man's number and my housekeepers number are all posted on the front cover of my visitors information book for addressing any issues that need immediate attention. Any problems are quickly addressed with a phone call. I take much pride in the cleanliness of this home. I can only guess at the reasons for musty smelly bedding. In humid climates clean sheets can get musty by throwing wet towels on them or using the air conditioning with windows closed. Without going into a point by point rebuttal of this guests issues I believe this review is unduly harsh and cruel.
Spacious, well-furnished, great location
This is the best neighborhood in Hilo, and Steve's home has a good view of the ocean and a quick walk to the finest parks in the region. The house is spacious and comfortable, with nice furnishings and plenty of windows. We enjoyed the deck, including two tables, plenty of comfortable chairs, a hammock and grill. The covered parking and large eaves are a plus on rainy days. Steve was very quick to respond to questions or issues. Overall, it was a very good value. Wish I was still there!.
Well maintained and equipped property with a great ocean view location.
We had a great time staying at this property that checked all the boxes. We enjoyed the nice breezes and listening to the ocean and frogs at night.
My family and I spent our Christmas vacation at Steve's home. It was exactly as it was presented on this website. Everything was very clean and in very nice condition. We had a wonderful time. All of the information and instructions left for us were very helpful. When we did have a question Steve was quick to reply. We had an amazing time here and would love to go back! I would highly recommend staying here if your in Hilo!
This home is just across from Hilo's most popular Ocean Park and recreational area. Watch the waves roll in from the porch and relax to the sound of the ocean. Swimming, picnicking, laying on the small beachs, watching whales, it is all just a short walk away. Richardson's Beach Park is an education site donated by the Richardson family for the study of marine life. It is a safe park used by many families with young children. The beach is safe for supervised children and there are life guards on duty. Enjoy picnic tables, benches and BBQs for your convenience along with the easy access for swimming and some of the best snorkeling in all Hawaii. Turtles are frequently seen and you can watch whales when they come to give birth in the winter to spring months. Even do some Boogie Boarding or Surfing if you dare at the break just outside the park. When you're ready for a great Seafood dinner, visit the Hilo Seaside Resturant just down the street. Hilo town center is just a quick 5 miles.
