***This rental is currently being discounted $50/nt. up until Christmas*** Looking for a Relaxing and Fun getaway? Enjoy Richardson Ocean Park located just a few minutes walk from this Hawaiian retreat. Located on the sunny end of Hilo and the most popular recreational shoreline on the east side of The Big Island. You will find this recently remodeled home has privacy along with all the comforts and emenities for a relaxing comfortable vacation. Many vacation rentals are ocean front with views but few have such great accessability to the ocean with sandy beaches and are a long way from town or stores. The location of this home offers so much more than just private luxury. This is the only rental in the neighborhood off the sometimes noisy beach frontal road. Although only a have block off the main street and the ocean still very visible you will be close to but not amidst the weekend crowd and traffic. Wander down the park and you will find yourself engulfed in the local Hawaiian culture. Even from the porch you will hear the children playing and smell the BBQs of family gatherings although early mornings and late afternoons you can find yourself the only one arround. Richardson's Ocean Park is very popular for those with children due to easy access and sheltered lagoons and lifeguards on duty It was donated by the Richardson Family for the purpose of marine life preservation. All pictures were taken within two blocks of this home. Get the feel of old Hawaii wandering the paths around ancient fish ponds, tidepools, discovering treasures along the shore and meeting the local people. Watch surfers, net fisherman, or swim with the hundreds of varieties of tropical fish and search for turtles. Whales come yearly in the winter months, and can't be missed spouting and breaching just off shore. This 3 bedroom home is surrounded by a small tropical garden and even has a lava tube (cave) with a small fish pond. The home's large master bedroom also has a single bed for possibly that child needing to be close to Mom and Dad. There is a small desk, looking out to the ocean, Wi-Fi and printer. The kitchen is modern, fully equipped with most the gadgets a gourmet chief might need. Many hours can be spent enjoying the sights and sounds from the porch, enjoying the hammock, or just watching the geckos. However; the most redeeming feature of this home is the location. This is not Waikiki and you will not find any luxury resorts. This is a very lush tropical area and here you will share the jungle with not only geckos and birds, but also mongoose, wild chickens and coqui frogs feral cats, dragon flies and occasionally a pig. Hilo is unique in Hawaii. You will experience the 'real' Hawaii here. Hilo has the largest percent of Native Hawaiian population anywhere in the state and people here are happy and in their pidgin dialect always willing to 'talk story' of their lives and culture for those that are curious. Old Town Hilo with it's famous farmers market still retains the feeling of the sugar cane empire with it's turn of the century architecture. Take the scenic drive up the Hamakua Coast to Waipio Valley. Don't forget your swim suit when driving down along the Red Road Coastline. You won't want to miss a stop to soak in the warm pond. Along with a trip to Hawaii Volcano National Park and up to the summit of Mauna Kea (13,796 ft.) for sunset and you will leave Hilo with memories and experiences you will only find on the windward side of the Big Island of Hawaii. Check the location of your prospective vacation rental. This is a big island and many rentals can be very isolated. This home is close to the airport, and all shops and attractions of Hilo Town.

I do not have an empire of vacation rentals. I am not a Landlord Mogul, Real Estate Agent or Property Manager. This is the only home I own and is my personal residents part of the year. Just need to rent this home so I can pay the bills and also enjoy staying here as much as possible.

About Steve Walsh (Owner)

After years of vacationing to Hawaii, camping around all the islands, I came to Hilo. I found a place rich in music and arts. The people are happy, kind, open minded thinking. And the climate is perfect !!!

This side of the Big Island is a lot like the culture and green environment I was used to in my rural Northern California home. I just felt like I fit in here better than anywhere else in Hawaii and so when the chance came, I moved. Scary as it was moving alone to a strange land with nothing but two suit cases, I have no regrets.

Steve Walsh (Owner) purchased this house in 2011

Why Steve Walsh (Owner) chose Hilo District

Richardson's Beach Park offers more recreation than anywhere else in Hilo. This house is also my personal place to relax.

What makes this house unique

Ocean View just off the main road by half a block, has the sound of nature and not traffic. Just a short walk to all shoreline activities with crystal clear water to cool off in. Lots of activities available.

A wonderful, relaxing, vacation home!

  • 5 of 5

We were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to stay at Steve's fantastic Hilo house. It was perfectly located - very near to downtown Hilo, the airport, and Volcano National Park. We were 3 adults and 3 children - and there was PLENTY of room for all of us. The kitchen was well appointed - and we enjoyed a few meals cooked at home while we were there. The beds were super comfortable - and even though AC was available - we did NOT need it - the trade winds and fans kept the house quite cool and comfortable. The sounds of the ocean and frogs put us to sleep every night - and the neighborhood rooster(s) woke us in the morning. The massage chair was very relaxing too. The hot water was plenty hot, and plentiful for when we needed showers, laundry, and dishes washed. The teapot was greatly appreciated as 1 of us had a bad cold, and hot tea was enjoyed often. We didn't have enough time to use the hot tub - but we sure wanted to! We didn't use the big screen TV - we were just too busy all day, that when we got 'home' - we mainly went to sleep - but the TV looked amazing! The views from the house of the ocean were just awesome. We hope to be blessed enough to be able to return, and would love to stay at Steve's home again.

Communication with Steve was fantastic from start to finish - and our damage deposit was returned before we even got off the plane back in NC. Talk about quick response!

On a side note - we were informed by our helicopter pilot (Scott with Blue Hawaiian - who was fantastic) during a tour, that energy costs about 7 times more in Hawaii than back in NC - so even though we consider ourselves pretty frugal with energy (and good about recycling) - we were even more so while in Hawaii.

Great place to relax and enjoy the beach!

  • 5 of 5

My husband, infant, and extended family and I stayed at Steve's house for 4 nights recently. This was a great house!

Prior to arrival, Steve was very communicative, a fast responder, and incredibly helpful. Everything was as described when we arrived, and from there we enjoyed thoroughly the beach across the street (and got to see some green sea turtles!), the beach gear Steve leaves at the house for his guests, the great space in Steve's house (large kitchen, large living room, great patio space, fun yard to explore, nice bedrooms and bathrooms, etc.), and the great location and proximity to Hilo downtown and Volcano National Park.

We had a BLAST in Hawaii, and a huge thanks to Steve!

Great Location

  • 5 of 5

Perfect relaxing retreat. Location is perfect, a short walk to Richardson Beach Park which is the best beach around (go behind the park building to the right for a great black sand beach and swimming/snorkeling spot). Although there are many other beach parks nearby worth checking out. The house is in the jungle just off of the busy main road, making it very peaceful but still with ocean views and sounds. The Lanai was perfect with the views and sounds, and was where we spent most of the time. We had toddlers, but the lanai was completely fenced in, so we could let them run around the lanai while they searched for geckos! We had been to Hilo before, but keep in mind that this is not a touristy resort area. Very local old time Hawaii feel, which is how we like it! But it is still close to the volcano, waterfalls, hiking, beaches, snorkeling, and great food a short drive away in downtown Hilo. Perfect relaxing location!

A great spot in Hilo

  • 5 of 5

We started in Kona and did 2 days in Hilo to experience the greener lush side of the big island. We had a lot of warm rain during our stay, making us grateful for the front loading washer and dryer. The black sand beach by Steve's is a cool, unique spot and definitely walkable - you'll just cross a main road about a block away. 4 adults stayed here for two nights with 3 kids under 7 and the space worked great. The master has a nice private bath (shower only) plus a twin bed for 1 small child. The two guest rooms on the other side of the house share a full bath. The house has some nice updates in it as far as appliances, master bath, etc... There are fans in every room of the house. The kitchen has what you need to cook full meals. I could see where the box AC unit in the main area of the house would come in handy, it can get pretty muggy here. The nice thing is you are literally surrounded with windows and two large sliding glass doors so if you open the house up and use the fans it gets a great tree house feel at night with all the night noise. Bring your bug spray to sit outside. His music collection had some great local, Hawaiian musicians. We didn't use the hot tub but on a cooler night it would be nice to have. When in Hilo: we did the scenic drive, saw Akaka Falls State Park and visited Volcano National Park. One couple ate at the Seaside Restaurant for their anniversary and loved it. Once the staff knew the occasion they received 2 glasses of champange and dessert on the house. We also tried Big Island Pizza and Brain Freeze Shave Ice and both were amazing after a long day of hiking the park. Hilo is a sleepy little town and less touristy than Kona but very welcoming and we're glad we went. My only advice to the owner would be to update the pictures on VRBO as they don't really do the place justice.

Hawaii stay near Hilo

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the beach house for 5 days the end of Aug 2014. This was our favorite part of our stay in Hawaii. The area was lush and tropical, and everything I envisioned when arriving on Hawaii (it was our 1st visit). We could see and hear the ocean a block away and feel the cool ocean breezes. The house was in a small subdivision of homes, but we felt like we were secluded. There were tall tropical trees surrounding the house for privacy. The wrap around porch was refreshingly cool in the evening with a grill, 2 tables and chairs and a hammock. The rental is even bigger in person than the pictures show. The kitchen, living room, and dining area were all open air. It felt like you were outside with the windows on all 3 walls. There was a small single air conditioner unit in the dining/living room area that we didn't even have to use. All of the three sided windows in the living room area could be left open even when raining, because of the generous lanai overhang. There were large floor fans that we moved into the bedrooms at night for an extra breeze. There were plenty of board games, books for entertainment and bikes in the lower garage area. One afternoon, we just chilled at the house watching local Hawaii news on the cable tv. If we wanted to cool off, the ocean was just a block away. The house was equipped with everything you could possibly need for home cooked meals. We had ice from the ice maker, there was a dishwasher, all kinds of pots, pans, dishware, etc. In fact, one night we cooked steaks on the grill, and ate outside on the porch. I felt like royalty. The master bedroom was spacious with its own private 2 sink vanity. It was on one side of the house and the other 2 bedrooms on the other side with their own shared bath. The other bedrooms were a bit smaller but still plenty roomy. There was plenty of storage for luggage and clothes. I liked the general location of the rental because it was far enough away from town to feel "away from it all" but close enough to be convenient to get groceries, shop or do tourist events (like ziplinine, helicopter rides, farmers market). The landlord was very helpful with tidbits about local attractions and upcoming events. He told us about local swimming spots like Okanakaha Beach Park (just past the ice cream shop on the right) going towards Hilo. The ponds were shallower and warmer (good for the non-swimmers in our group). I would highly recommend this rental to future vacationers.

Richardson's Park
Car: recommended

This home is just across from Hilo's most popular Ocean Park and recreational area. Watch the waves roll in from the porch and relax to the sound of the ocean. Swimming, picnicking, laying on the small beachs, watching whales, it is all just a short walk away. Richardson's Beach Park is an education site donated by the Richardson family for the study of marine life. It is a safe park used by many families with young children. The beach is safe for supervised children and there are life guards on duty. Enjoy picnic tables, benches and BBQs for your convenience along with the easy access for swimming and some of the best snorkeling in all Hawaii. Turtles are frequently seen and you can watch whales when they come to give birth in the winter to spring months. Even do some Boogie Boarding or Surfing if you dare at the break just outside the park. When you're ready for a great Seafood dinner, visit the Hilo Seaside Resturant just down the street. Hilo town center is just a quick 5 miles.
