Secluded, Pet-Friendly Mountain Cabin In Apple-Picking Country

Overview

About the property

4 Bedrooms, 3 Bathrooms, Sleeps 8

Perched deep in the woods near apple orchards, the Biltmore Estate, and Lake Lure, this sunny log cabin features 4 bedrooms (2 queen upstairs, 1 queen and 1 twin set downstairs), 3 baths, upstairs and downstairs living areas with televisions, a well-stocked kitchen, and a ping-pong table in the garage. It's a great set-up for families with kids.

Enjoy the rocking chairs on the covered back deck as you look out over a wooded hill with winter views. The covered front porch supplies a picnic table and charcoal grill for outdoor eating. Extensive hiking is available at the top of Rich Mountain, a short climb up the hill behind the house. There's lots of room for dogs to roam.

Spend your afternoons tubing on the Green River, fishing in nearby trout streams, apple-picking in conveniently located orchards, climbing Chimney Rock, exploring the Blue Ridge Parkway, visiting the Biltmore Estate, or enjoying antique-hunting and dining in Asheville and Hendersonville. Our central location puts you within 25 minutes of all these activities.

If you want a real get-away, a place that is not in a neighborhood or housing development, our cabin in the woods may be for you. It it laid back and secluded, although still within 13 minutes from all kinds of big-box stores and restaurants in Hendersonville. In fact, the final 1.3 miles to the cabin are on a dirt road that gets rather steep right before the cabin's driveway. The dirt road portion is about a 5-minute drive and do-able in regular cars, except in icy conditions, when it is best to have an SUV or 4-wheel drive. (We normally drive up in a Toyota Prius or Dodge Mini-Van and have no problems, but this IS a mountain dirt road!)

About Joe Kelly

This cabin is owned by two families who live and work in Charleston, SC. We have children that are very close in age, and we all love to go up to the cabin together when we get a chance. The set-up is great for families with children. The kids have their own bedrooms and living area downstairs where they can hang out and leave the grown-ups undisturbed in the evenings. We spend our time at the cabin hiking, holding ping-pong tournaments, sipping wine on the back deck, grilling out, and of course, taking advantage of river tubing, fishing, shopping, etc. in nearby Hendersonville and Asheville.

Joe Kelly purchased this cabin in 2005

Why Joe Kelly chose Smoky Mountains

Our cabin is a great place to get away from it all. We're surrounded by woods and hiking opportunities. After a short hike up the hill behind the house, you will find miles and miles of old logging roads to explore on Rich Mountain and the surrounding hills. Yet, at the same time, we're a short, 13-minute drive away from numerous stores and restaurants in Hendersonville.

What makes this cabin unique

We love the log cabin feel of the place--the all-wood walls and ceilings in the upstairs living room, dining room, kitchen, and bedrooms especially. The cabin is extremely comfortable--laid-back and not fussy or fancy.

Miles and miles of beautiful hiking available on mountain behind house without having to get in your car. Fairly steep dirt road for 1.3 miles and driveway--in icy conditions, an SUV or other 4-wheel drive vehicle is recommended. Note: we do NOT have wifi service at the cabin, but many guests are able to make a wifi hotspot with their phones, especially if they have Verizon cell phone service.

Nice Getaway Location

  • 4 of 5

We had a great time here. Accommodations were good and pretty much as expected for a cabin setting. The fire pit was nice out back for our small crew to roast a few marshmallows and share time. The location was very convenient for Chimney Rock and other sites, and we got in some nice hikes with just short rides to get there. We also got a little snow to provide us with some beautiful scenery to end up a very nice weekend.

The only negative was the security deposit which took a very long time to show back up in our account. It is written that it may take a month to get that back and you should believe them.

Owner's Response: Glad you enjoyed the hiking, but so sorry that the housekeeping was disappointing. It turns out that this was the last cleaning done by a housekeeper that we'd worked with for several years. She quit unexpectedly after this cleaning. We've since hired a new service that seems to be doing an excellent job. We appreciate the feedback.

Thanksgiving get away

  • 5 of 5

Enjoyed our time at the cabin there were only 3 of us and there was pleanty of room. Enjoyed the hiking right behind the cabin, although steep climb the look out was nice. We were there during all the fires in the area and there was minimal smoke. The town of Hendersonville was a quaint place enjoyed spending money for small business Saturday. Great time great place will be back.

Property was nice acessability not so much.

View from upper deck was very nice. Downstairs never got warm. Had to repair toilet in upstairs bedroom on left, it wouldn't flush. Not enough towels or TP for 8 people. Stating that the last 1.2 miles up to the cabin was a bit rough is a definite understatement. Our 2015 AWD Nissan Rouge and 2015 Jeep Cherokee will never be the same....it was EXTREMELY rough and uncomfortable to say the least. And the bottom of the paved driveway leading to the cabin needs some serious repairs! Five of our eight party managed to make the grueling hike up the mountain behind the cabin to the overlook. All are in shape and young and thought the hike was pretty rugged and hard. As often as we vacation in NC, this cabin is off our list for a return trip.

A quiet week in the woods

  • 5 of 5

My girlfriend and I needed to get out of the city and decided to rent a cabin in the woods for four days just to get away from the hustle and bustle. After some research we picked this wonderful cabin in Fletcher, NC, granted it was just the two of us staying the cabin had plenty of room for more people. The cabin itself was very clean, well maintained, stocked with everything from olive oil to charcoal for the grill, as well as a few pieces of wood for the fire pit. When more wood was needed, I gathered fallen wood from the endless trails behind the cabin. Granted the hill to get to the old logging roads was defiantly steep but was also short hike. After most hikes I found myself on the front porch rocking away or in the back in front of the fire bit, I don't think I turned on the television once.

The host before the trip were extremely helpful with any questions I may have had leading up to it. From where to eat, where to hike and where to fish any question I had was responded to with in 12 hours with very detailed emails about all the things to do in the area.

Overall I would recommend staying at this cabin if you are looking to for a nice quiet spot to rest and renew.
