Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

About the property

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + Sleeping Porch, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

Circa 1906 one-bedroom cottage was once part of the Briones Mexican Land Grant. The Briones' married into the Lauff Family and this was the home of Jack Lauff. The Cottage was a caretaker cottage. Tucked in an orchard garden., it features a sun porch, separate office/studio; sunny, peaceful, & private location. Or you may be inspired y to bake your favorite cookies and pies. The house just has that feeling. Wildlife abounds...quail, blue herons, deer, blue birds, soaring hawks, and hummingbirds as you bathe in the outdoor tub surrounded by honeysuckle, jasmine and roses.

Just a mile from Bolinas Beach and a couple miles from Agate Beach. Many hiking and bicycling options in State and National Parks. Beauty abounds. If you are not already, you will leave a photographer!

There is a queen size bed in the cottage bedroom and 2 twin sized beds in separate studio bedroom. Additionally there is a full sized futon in sunporch. The ideal number of guests is 4 since there is only 1 bathroom which has a stall shower. There is an outdoor tub in the garden.

Owner lives on the property in another house. There is ample privacy afforded guests as the cottage has its own yard with fence.

About Terry Donohue

When I moved to West Marin from Chicago I knew that I had landed someplace so special. This is paradise! But when I drove down Horseshoe Hill Road and saw this little red farmhouse, I stopped the car. It looked a bit like a Little House on the Prairie as it was set back in a pasture. The cottage was built in 1906 and was part of the Lauff Ranch. I live in the Barn that is also on the property. Flowers and fruit trees and beauty all around. Horseshoe Hill is protected, thus making it warmer than the rest of Bolinas. Most of the surrounding properties have multiple acres so there is privacy. It is about a mile away from downtown and the beach, yet the surf can be heard in the distance as the ocean is just to the west over the ridge. I can't imagine living anywhere else. I have seen coyotes and bobcats, blue herons and snowy egrets, the hummingbirds, honeybees, woodpeckers, several kinds of owls, and other night creatures call in the night. If there is a full moon and weather is clear, there is no need for flashlights to light your way.

Why Terry Donohue chose San Francisco Bay Area

This property is out of the fray of the downtown Bolinas which can be filled with out of town surfers and visitors. While Bolinas Beach and Downtown can feel festive, it is great to be able to leave the beach or return from long hikes to relax on this quiet and light cottage. There is hammock for reading that novel and sip lemonade. In fact there are 4 Meyer Lemon Trees bearing fruit from which to make your fresh lemonade! When they are laying there are fresh, organic eggs from happy hens living on the property. On clear nights, away from streetlights, a zillion stars, meteor showers, planets, and moons have the celestial stage. On New Moon Nights you can go up to the Mt Theater the Mt Tam Lecture Nights and San Francisco Amateur Astronomers (Apr-Oct) where after the lecture, Astronomers will help you view then night sky through their high powered telescopes. See other galaxies, nebulae, constellations. Children love this property as they are safe, away from traffic.

What makes this cottage unique

Perfect for family retreat or a romantic getaway. The setting is peaceful and quite beautiful. The gardens are old and well-maintained.

Couldn't be Sweeter

Terry's cottage is a gem. Wonderful location, so near (to the urban Bay Area) and yet so far.

The kitchen is exceptionally outfitted to meet most all cooking needs. There are perches both inside and out to suit your every mood. Plus deer! and herons! and friendly horses next door! We had a marvelous and remarkably relaxing time. Thanks Terry!

we stayed in the barn, not the cottage and it was great. Lovely host, great location, very quiet at night and charming country feel.

Loved our stay

  • 5 of 5

Despite bad luck with probably the rainiest weekend of the year we had a great stay in the cottage. 4 adults and 2 children comfortably fit. Well equipped kitchen and cosily decorated.

Recommended. Thanks Terry!

A gem in Bolinas

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful experience staying at the 1906 Bolinas Cottage. Everything inside and out helped to create a peaceful vacation. The cottage provides all that one needs and more (Terry has thought of everything). The garden and surrounding the property is filled with fruit trees and beautiful flowers (gorgeous fuchsia, ferns and hydrangea). Because our son is full of energy, the fenced-in garden gave him space to run and gave me peace of mind that he would stay safe while outside. Accessible but private location. Terry was a great host; always friendly and available if we had questions about our stay. I would highly recommend staying at the cottage and hope to return.

Peaceful, Fun Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We had such a lovely time at this beautiful gem of a property. The cottage and gardens have that special "vintage vibe" but with all the modern conveniences. Really, it is the best of both worlds! My daughter had a grand time running around the gardens and adjacent pasture, My husband and son enjoyed the nearby hikes, and I enjoyed reading and working on a puzzle in the sun room. Although it is a small house, there is plenty of room for everyone to spread out and have their own space - especially with the snug and adorable second little house. Pt Reyes, Stinson Beach and the little town of Bolinas are all nearby, and far away from city lights, we could not believe how beautiful and bright the stars were at night.

Terry is an attentive and thoughtful host, and the house is well-stocked and beautifully decorated. My only suggestion for future guests - and this is really only for colder weather - is to make sure you understand how to work the heaters. It's very simple once you learn a few simple tricks from Terry. Honestly, it was part of the charm of the cottage for us but it is good to be warm! We look forward to staying here again!
