About the property

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

Welcome to Flying Squirrel Lodge, a cozy PET-FRIENDLY cottage nestled in the woods of Sherwood Forest Audubon Sanctuary. This single level (no steps!) 2 bedroom, 1 bath, previously pet –friendly home is located in the heart of all the area has to offer.

Rock your cares away on the front porch as you watch the light glistening on the surface of Trout Lake below and listen to the sound of the many birds that inhabit the trees around you. Walk down the hill to enjoy a dip in the clear, clean water or drop a line off the dock or the dam to try your hand at fishing. Within minutes, walk or drive to the quaint Robin Hood barn to attend picnics or to the Robin Hood Center to participate in floor exercises, listen to lectures by some of the many knowledgeable people who live in the Forest, or check out a book or video from the library. Make the short drive across the forest to the heated junior Olympic swimming pool where you can swim laps, participate in water aerobics, or just enjoy a leisurely dip in the sparkling water in season or play tennis or shuffleboard on the courts year round. An 18 hole, par 3 golf course fronts the Forest and is available to all for a modest fee. Hike the many miles of trails alone or with one of the docents who offer their knowledge and time to the people who live in or visit the Forest. An 8 mile drive brings you to the charming town of Brevard where you can wander the streets and visit the unique shops and galleries found there. Within minutes of downtown is the Pisgah National Forest with all the wonders it has to offer including waterfalls, nature centers, hiking trails, trout streams, and Sliding Rock where you can brave the icy waters for the slide of your life. Within a 30 mile range are 250 named waterfalls, 6 state and national forests, the famous Brevard Music Camp, the Biltmore Estate, and the charming towns of Hendersonville and Flat Rock, with the Flat Rock Playhouse and Carl Sandburg’s home.

While at home, enjoy the chestnut paneled great room by curling up on the double recliner sofa in front of a crackling fire in the corner stone fireplace. A galley kitchen opens over a counter so if you choose to cook, you can enjoy your family and friends at the same time. The bathroom contains a full size washer and dryer for your convenience. The first bedroom has a king bed and the second has twin beds for an alternative sleeping option. Find peace and tranquility in this little slice of heaven with a visit to Flying Squirrel Lodge.

About Sally Mateja

My husband and I live and work in Alexandria, VA. We love to spend time in the city and then relax in the country at our haven in the Blue Ridge mountains of western North Carolina.

Sally Mateja purchased this cottage in 1985

Why Sally Mateja chose Brevard

I have been coming to the Sherwood Forest since 1965. It started with family vacations every year in rental homes until finally in 1985, my parents purchased Flying Squirrel Lodge. It was designed to be easily accessible which allowed Mom and Dad to enjoy it for many years before turning it over to me in 2011.

Sherwood Forest is home to so many knowledgeable people who work together to create and maintain a community where people live and protect the natural environment. There is so much to see and do yet it is a place of peace and tranquility. It is truly a slice of heaven on earth.

What makes this cottage unique

Flying Squirrel sits overlooking Trout Lake, one of 5 lakes in the Colony. A trail begins just behind the house and can be followed up or down the mountain, across streams, around lakes and through the forest to connect with 21 miles of marked paths.

Warm and cozy like being at grandma’s house in a beautiful mountain setting - perfect!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed here Nov 9-12 for a chance to try to catch the fall leaves. It was myself, my husband and our two children (3 and 6) and our family pet. The cabin was a little hard to find with a GPS, so just pay attention to the house numbers and the sign at the end of the driveway. We did not have cell signal (AT&T), so just keep that in mind. I absolutely loved how spacious the house was, but still cozy. All of the furniture and decor was “outdated” per say, but really gave it that perfect vacation cabin feel and we really felt like we were at grandma’s... which we loved! I also really appreciated that you have everything you could possibly need there, kitchen and pantry staples; from pots and pans to salt and pepper, oatmeal, and the list goes on. There was even little hotel soaps and shampoo in the bathroom (hairspray, a brush, you name it). You can tell it’s a leave something for the next guest type place, which I somehow couldn’t wait to leave something behind (we left hot cocoa packets)! Sally and her family did a great job updating the appliances (brand new stove, oven, dishwasher, washer and dryer). The fireplace was perfect and provided warmth and the perfect setting for our evenings to gather around. The cabin is equipped with WiFi too, so I highly recommend starting your directions on your phone while still connected before you leave to go on your adventure.

All in all, it was the perfect experience and vacation spot for our family. We plan to visit for years to come!

Charming and cozy cottage nestled in the woods

  • 5 of 5

Cottage is lovely, not fancy but everything you would need and is very cozy and comfortable. The family history adds to its overall charm. Beautiful location overlooking a crystal clear pond. We'll definitely be returning. The "neighborhood " is spectacujar and is close to Dupont Forest. House is about 15 minutes to downtown Brevard and about 35/40 to Ashville. Great location:)

Only one word to describe this beautiful and peaceful venue - AWESOME!

  • 5 of 5

What a tranquil oasis in this hustling bustling world. Surrounded by forests and waterfalls it is truly wonderful. The town of Brevard is quaint and full of unique bistros and shops. Its proximity to Hendersonville and Asheville make it the perfect location for those who wish to sample the atmosphere of larger yet still lovely places. And of course the plethora of waterfalls at least two of which are within a few miles of the cabin, and the incomparable Pisgah National Forest the cradle of forestry can't be topped. You will not be disappointed if you come for a few days or a longer vacation. And don't forget the leaves!
