Welcome to Flying Squirrel Lodge, a cozy PET-FRIENDLY cottage nestled in the woods of Sherwood Forest Audubon Sanctuary. This single level (no steps!) 2 bedroom, 1 bath, previously pet –friendly home is located in the heart of all the area has to offer.
Rock your cares away on the front porch as you watch the light glistening on the surface of Trout Lake below and listen to the sound of the many birds that inhabit the trees around you. Walk down the hill to enjoy a dip in the clear, clean water or drop a line off the dock or the dam to try your hand at fishing. Within minutes, walk or drive to the quaint Robin Hood barn to attend picnics or to the Robin Hood Center to participate in floor exercises, listen to lectures by some of the many knowledgeable people who live in the Forest, or check out a book or video from the library. Make the short drive across the forest to the heated junior Olympic swimming pool where you can swim laps, participate in water aerobics, or just enjoy a leisurely dip in the sparkling water in season or play tennis or shuffleboard on the courts year round. An 18 hole, par 3 golf course fronts the Forest and is available to all for a modest fee. Hike the many miles of trails alone or with one of the docents who offer their knowledge and time to the people who live in or visit the Forest. An 8 mile drive brings you to the charming town of Brevard where you can wander the streets and visit the unique shops and galleries found there. Within minutes of downtown is the Pisgah National Forest with all the wonders it has to offer including waterfalls, nature centers, hiking trails, trout streams, and Sliding Rock where you can brave the icy waters for the slide of your life. Within a 30 mile range are 250 named waterfalls, 6 state and national forests, the famous Brevard Music Camp, the Biltmore Estate, and the charming towns of Hendersonville and Flat Rock, with the Flat Rock Playhouse and Carl Sandburg’s home.
While at home, enjoy the chestnut paneled great room by curling up on the double recliner sofa in front of a crackling fire in the corner stone fireplace. A galley kitchen opens over a counter so if you choose to cook, you can enjoy your family and friends at the same time. The bathroom contains a full size washer and dryer for your convenience. The first bedroom has a king bed and the second has twin beds for an alternative sleeping option. Find peace and tranquility in this little slice of heaven with a visit to Flying Squirrel Lodge.

My husband and I live and work in Alexandria, VA. We love to spend time in the city and then relax in the country at our haven in the Blue Ridge mountains of western North Carolina.
Sally Mateja purchased this cottage in 1985
I have been coming to the Sherwood Forest since 1965. It started with family vacations every year in rental homes until finally in 1985, my parents purchased Flying Squirrel Lodge. It was designed to be easily accessible which allowed Mom and Dad to enjoy it for many years before turning it over to me in 2011.
Sherwood Forest is home to so many knowledgeable people who work together to create and maintain a community where people live and protect the natural environment. There is so much to see and do yet it is a place of peace and tranquility. It is truly a slice of heaven on earth.
Flying Squirrel sits overlooking Trout Lake, one of 5 lakes in the Colony. A trail begins just behind the house and can be followed up or down the mountain, across streams, around lakes and through the forest to connect with 21 miles of marked paths.
Everything was as presented in write up and pictures. Well stocked with everything necessary for a great stay and feel more at home than any previous rentals. The view is fabulous in a very quiet and friendly neighborhood. It is located near great shops and waterfalls that I went to see. Enjoyed a super birthday weekend and hope to return.
It was so great! I loved it and suffice it to say I have zero complaints! I had the best time and fell in love with Brevard and Sherwood Forest!
We rented the cabin 05-09 Dec 16. The cabin is clean overall & in a nice quiet area. We will definitely try & rent the cabin again. There were just 2 of us, but the cabin would be very nice for 4. There was a large stack of firewood under the carport & we enjoyed several fires.
There are hiking trails throughout the area & one behind the cabin going down to Trout Lake. The trail crosses the dam that forms the lake where you can view the falls & stream below. I don’t know the correct way to the dam but I walked down another driveway & across to the picnic area.
It was too cold to enjoy sitting on the porch, but it does have a nice view of the lake. We did not put birdseed in the feeders, but we noticed many birds & some squirrels feeding on the seeds throughout our stay.
• Sally’s car was parked under the carport when we arrived & certainly not a problem, but we were concerned that someone else was in or around the cabin somewhere until we contacted her.
• The bed is very soft & there is a foam pillow on top of the mattress. It did not bother me, but my wife found it uncomfortable. If you do not like a soft mattress you will not like it.
• We found some left over rotted food in an aluminum pan in the oven and threw it away. Not a problem & simply forgotten by a tenant & overlooked when cleaning. We do recommend the oven be checked in the future.
• There was a lot of the owner’s or guest’s stuff left in the refrigerator, freezer, & cabinets. You are allowed to use whatever you want & asked to replace stuff if it runs out. We did use some of the spices & threw away an ice cream container with one bite of ice cream left in it. We had to rearrange things in the freezer & refrigerator to fit items we brought. If you bring a lot of refrigerated or frozen items you may have a problem.
• There were a number of burned out light bulbs throughout the cabin. We found a cabinet with spare bulbs & changed them ourselves.
• The roads around the cabin are 2-way, steep, winding, & narrow. You rarely see another car, but it is difficult to pass. Someone has to stop to allow the other car to pass. Not a problem, just a warning.
Do not hesitate to rent the Flying Squirrel. We certainly will rent it again in the future.
Our family spent a week at Flying Squirrel. This was our second stay at the cottage and we enjoyed our stay each time. From hiking on the numerous trails in the deep forests to enjoying the culture of nearby Brevard, activities are endless (don't miss the live music of Mountain Music Mondays at the Oskar Blues Brewery!) Flying Squirrel is very comfortable and relaxing. Our family of four had plenty of space to spend time together and still have our own space, when needed. The view of the lake from the deck is beautiful, particularly on a sunny morning. The cottage is clean and well maintained. The kitchen supplies were more than we expected. Even though we were there in November, we were warm and comfortable the whole time. There is so much to do and enjoy about this part of North Carolina and Flying Squirrel fits in perfectly with the mountain environment. Thank you, Sally, for the hospitality. We look forward to our next visit.
Flying Squirrel is the best !!! We go to the mountains every year for our vacation, and this place was the best yet. Thanks, Sally for sharing this home.!!!!
Pictures portrayed it well. We were disappointed that the worn out fireplace cover kept us from enjoying fires on the cool nights.
