About Paul Maddex
We are from the East Lansing area. This has been our family cottage for 50 years. As the 5 sons travel farther away, we want to let others enjoy the wonderful experiences we had growing up at this lake.
Paul Maddex purchased this Cottage in 1962
Why Paul Maddex chose Elk Rapids
The warm lake and family access first drew our parents here. Over the years the lake has proven to be a wonderful place for creating family memories. The lake and area are beautiful, and invites you back year after year.
What makes this Cottage unique
It was the safe, friendly, family atmosphere that drew us to Birch Lake. The clean, warm water and shallow sandy bottom makes the lake ideal for families and children. Evening campfires, beautiful sunsets, playing splash football and throwing a Frisbee in the shallows, learning to fish and water ski. These are just some of the memories you'll take home, as we did.

If it weren't for not-so-warm-and-lack-of-sun weather it would have been a perfect stay. Owners have upgraded the kitchen which is much nicer. Birch Lake and area is as beautiful as ever. Thank you!
Great cottage on Birch Lake
We have been vacationing on Birch Lake for years and this is the nicest cottage we have stayed in. There was plenty of room for our party of five and our dog. The kitchen had everything we needed with a nice separate dining area. The big bonus was the washer and dryer. The lake has a nice sandy bottom and is shallow for quite a ways out. The kids loved it and we couldn't keep our grandson out of the water even on the two cold days we had. We are hoping to come back again next year.
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay!
Birch Lake is a beautiful place to get away, and the Maddex cottage a perfect place to stay. It's been years since we last vacationed here, so we rediscovered the charm of this neck of the woods in northern Michigan, especially Elk Rapids. God-willing, we'll be back again next year.
Nice summer get away!
The beach area and shallowness of the water was perfect for kids. Our Grandsons were in the water as much as they could. The cottage has been updated and we had plenty of room to hang out when the weather wasn't pleasant. Traverse city is close enough to explore places for kids and restaurants. We would go back again!
I'm glad you enjoyed the cottage and Birch Lake. You're right; the warm, shallow water is perfect for kids, families and relaxing. And I've always enjoyed the beautiful sunsets there.
We look forward to having you visit again!
Great family cottage
This is a wonderful place to stay if you have young children. The water is very clear and shallow for quite a bit. There is a small yard for play and great beach area for the kids to build sand castles on. My kids love it here they were in the water from sun up to sundown only leaving for meals and bathroom breaks! I would definitely recommend this particular cottage for anyone with young kids.
Elk Rapids/Birch Lake Fan
Been renting on Birch Lake for 12 years. As far as I'm concerned, if you're looking for a great "up north" location, this should be your destination. Birch Lake is small and perfect for families. It's beautifully clean, warm and children can walk out into the water a long way before getting in too deep. Over the years we've rented 3 different cottages. This particular rental had pros and cons over the others. There's a nice, large deck on the back that has a table large enough to accommodate at least 6 comfortably. The beach area is good sized and there's a long dock that we used for sunning, towels, coolers, etc..... The living room has been remodeled, quaint and has nice wood floors. I personally don't like carpeting because of odors and being this cottage allows pets, I worry about fleas, dog hair and so on. Allowing pets is "ify". I appreciated my family being able to bring their dog but worried about what the pets before us had left. There weren't any noticeable odors, messes or hair, so... The master bdrm. was good, comfy queen bed and the second bdrm. also an okay queen bed. The 3rd bdrm was good but for us the bunk beds were useless. No one but small children could have slept in them; adults aren't going to climb to the top and feel claustrophobic on the bottom. We split the beds immediately. However, they still didn't get slept on because both mattress's were on boards and too uncomfortable. One of my family members opted for the couch instead, which made me worry about the flea issue again. The bedroom would be much better with 2 twin size real beds or 1 full size. It is also big enough to somehow accommodate a stack-able or small washer/dryer. The only laundromat nearby is closed; the closest one is 20 miles away. One of the other cottages we get does have a washer/dryer. There is a dishwasher and some sort of water filter. We used the filtered water for coffee and ice and it was fine. However, within a couple of days the sinks, tub and toilets were brown from the water and it was "yucky" for lack of a better word. The dishwasher leaves the dishes looking filmy. This cottage has WiFi, (actually better than mine at home) and the other cottages don't but the cable sucks; couldn't even catch a Tiger game, maybe 6 channels, total. The bbq grill was charcoal and had one rusty leg that fell off a few times. All that being said, I still may choose this cottage again because of the deck, beach and dock. A few small improvements would make this perfect!
First I'd like to say I'm glad you've chosen to re-book with us for next summer and told your friends, who have also booked.
I'm understand your concern about fleas. Our cleaning crew does a careful job of cleaning and preparing the cottage for each guest, and we've never had a complaint about fleas. The water table in the area has a strong iron content, but we have a extensive water filtration system, which unknown to us was not working properly at the time. The kitchen has a reverse osmosis water tap with purified water for cooking and drinking.
The cable TV has been upgraded and the bunk beds have been replaced by a comfortable double bed, though I imagine the kids will miss the bunk beds.
El Rapids is a wonderful tourist town with shops, restaurants, marina, boat rentals, golfing and more. Close to Traverse City. Day trip activities include Mackinaw Island, Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes, miniature golf, movie theaters, restaurants, shopping, winery tours and more.
