About Owner

My husband Mark and I moved to Maine from Ohio. Although we've lived in many cities, have traveled extensively and even lived abroad, we still have to pinch ourselves occasionally when we go to our favorite spots in the Mid Coast of Maine on a crisp fall day. It truly is 'the way life should be'.

Owner purchased this house in 2011

Why Owner chose Mid-Coast & Islands

We live in a lovely New England Cape in the area. But when we moved here, we had no idea what kinds of properties were available. When we saw this home, we found the view and surrounding forests extraordinary. We see parades of turkeys, deer and shorebirds daily. We love to watch the great blue heron quietly fishing in the tidal marsh. There is no traffic noise; no human sounds at all. Just silence, and the sounds of nature.

What makes this house unique

This home has the best of both worlds. We're only a few miles from the charming and historic town of Bath, just 20 minutes or so from the college town of Brunswick and the shopping Mecca of Freeport. In the other direction, we're a stone's throw from a sand beach and the delightful Five Island lobster shack hanging over a working fishing harbor.

Beautiful home in a quiet location by the cove

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this wonderful home, located in the small town of Georgetown Maine. We really enjoyed our time in the house, which was well equipped allowing us to cook breakfast lunch and dinner on a few days! We also enjoyed being able to access amazing seafood, the Five Island Lobster house was close by and very nice, and a real Maine experience. We were provided with a pass for Reid State park, which is a stunning place that we were excited to visit, the ocean was a little cold and the waves very strong for kids under 10, so we used the pas to give us access to some of the inland state parks with lakes, much warmer!!

We travelled to some of the beautiful towns up and down the coast, Georgetown and this home being ideally suited for doing this.

The only reason we may not return is to visit another part of the USA!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much to you and your family, Joe! We enjoyed having you. It's such fun to hear about others' experiences, especially those who visit from "away". (We can appreciate our little corner of the planet through visitors' eyes.) And you were from especially far away :) coming from Europe.

"Second Times A Charm"

  • 5 of 5

Second trip to Birch Island for us and we truly enjoyed the peace and quiet. Guaranteed wildlife sightings and not a peep except for the birds! We looked forward to visiting Reid State Park, walking on the beach there and hoping we would catch sights of the deer when we returned.

We were pleasantly surprised to find that we could send and receive text messages via Verizon Wireless even though our phones indicated "no service", and calls could not be placed. If you are a Verizon Wireless customer staying at Birch Island, we recommend setting your phone on the green cabinet where the land line is ~ that is where we consistently received text messages (unless of course, you don't want to be disturbed).

Still a warm, cozy place with beautiful ocean views and close to both, nature and town.

We will gladly return, once visiting Georgetown again.

Beautiful setting, charming home, light & bright.

  • 5 of 5

I have stayed here twice durng the winter. It has a beautiful view of the bay, the tides & the waterfowl through the wall of windows. It is simply and cleverly set up with high ceilings and an open floor plan to maximize the feeling of space in this efficient home. The owners were very responsive to any questions we had.

Serene and Peaceful!

  • 4 of 5

This lovely home is ideal for a quiet get away, its bigger then it appears in the photos. The downstairs of the house is like a small apartment including a kitchen area, only thing missing is a microwave or frig. My teenage daughter and her friend were delighted to have the bottom floor to themselves and we rarely even heard them. The house sits on the cove which is a walk down to the dock, my husband spent alot of time on the water in his Kayak and we rented a canoe nearby for the week, so we enjoyed that as well. The water is very calm, not alot of other boaters. The fishing is amazing, my husband caught two huge fish and if you watch carefully you will see a ton of fish jumping out of the water. We have family about 20 mins away and so we had them over several times and enjoyed lobster on the screened in porch.

Everything cant be perfect and sorry that I have to complain a bit...the owners require you to compost your left over food, while my husband loved the idea and we certainly followed the rules I can see some vacationers not want to be bothered with that. Also the queen bed in the master bedroom had a horribly hard mattress which made sleeping very difficult all week for my husband and I.

Tranquil and Rejuvenating Place to Stay

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at this location last year on my own and had a wonderfully, relaxing time. This year I stayed with my wife and two young adult children. We loved how quiet and peaceful the property was. The house is larger than the pictures portray - very open and airy. We saw wild turkeys, deer and various birds out upon the water. When the tide was in, we cooled off in the water. My daughter enjoyed painting and drawing by the water and my son enjoyed napping in the afternoon. The Georgetown Farmer's Market is not too far away and so we shopped there for fresh veggies and fruit often. A wonderful summer retreat!

We LOVED Staying Here

  • 5 of 5

We loved this place SO much. Sandy was wonderfully helpful throughout the entire process, and our stay, and I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to meet her face to face. This house is just wonderful, and there were so many things I loved about it, I don't know where to start!

The view alone is incredible. There is a private dock, which we used daily, simply to sit and relax, or dip our toes into the water. The upstairs - which you enter from the front porch [this confused me at first, LOL] - has the master bedroom, bathroom with toilet, sink and standing shower, living room, dining room and kitchen. The screened in porch area is on this floor as well. We spent many mornings in the screened in porch, waking up, watching the deer and turkeys, and enjoying the quiet. The downstairs has a bedroom with two single beds, which my kids quickly personalized with their toys and stuffed animals. Plenty of fans and blankets, as needed. There is a small family-type room downstairs as well. We played board games down there, one day when it rained. Board games provided. :) There is also washer/dryer and a bathroom with a toilet, tub/shower on the downstairs floor. The downstairs floor has a door that opens out to the backyard, where a quick walk will take you down to the dock.

The house does not have AC, however keeping the water-side blinds closed a bit during the late morning sun did wonders for keeping the house cool. Plenty of fans are also provided, and we never had one day when we were too hot.

Plenty of pillows, linens, towels, beach towels, cookware and dishes/glasses were provided, and the kitchen, while small, is cute and well laid out. We LOVED the open floor plan, the house felt so light and airy, it was just beautiful.

Sandy and Mark provided a pass to Reid State Park - and I think it worked when we went to Popham Beach as well, though we went so many places I honestly can't remember now. :)

We were all sad when our week came to an end, and my kids are already asking if we can stay in the house again when we visit Maine next. I told them as long as no one else has booked it for the week we visit, I have absolutely no problem staying here again. :)

Book it, you won't be disappointed.

Owner's Response: Wow. Thank you so much "V". It's not only a very kind review but it's so fun for us to hear the highlights of your stay. We're so glad everything went well and we do hope you can come back when you can. ps. We also like to just sit on that dock (or porch) when we can. Having come from "the big city", we're always dazzled by the quiet where the natural world comes alive. Thank you so much. Sandy

Some of our personal favorites within 10 minutes are -- contemplating the double sunrise at Birch Island; crab and haddock sandwich at the Five Islands Lobster Company pier; watching the resident osprey and beavers at play at our favorite bog; walking our 2.5 mile loop through forest, marsh, and the beach at Reid State park; checking out the sailboats at Robinhood Marina (I'd take that one!); and watching the sunset over a glass of wine at Gray Havens.
