We loved our time here! The farm is gorgeous, especially with all the blossoming trees that made the whole experience feel like a fairy tale. We loved fishing, canoeing, and meeting all the wonderful animals.
Beautiful views and property. Very clean, comfortable and well appointed house in an incredible location. Enjoyed the goats and was not bothered by the roosters! Wonderful naturally fermented beer at Pen Druid and delicious whiskey cocktails at Copper Fox Distillery. Good vibes!
We had a wonderful time; the property was beautiful, the stay was comfortable, everyone was responsive, and our 2-year-old was entranced - for her, the farm was her barnyard toys come to life. We're grateful for a lovely weekend away as a family.
We had a great time this farm! We are hoping to go back at some point soon! Hopefully, able to see the beautiful views from other seasons through out the year.
Our family stayed for a weekend and could not have been more thrilled! Our hosts were a delight, the beauty of the property is second to none, and the animals were a wonderful addition!!

Enjoyable retreat!
We had an incredible time, great location away from everything but also convenient to Sperryville dining and shopping. The farm fresh eggs were a great and welcome surprise for our morning breakfast. Looking forward to our next trip!
The most incredible views. Very adorable animals that the kids enjoyed petting. We had a wonderful time here, the property is very close to Sperryville and the Shenandoah park
We really loved our stay at the farm house. Our 18 month old loved the animals and feeding the goats. As soon as we went outside, he would make a beeline for the goats. The location is also extremely close to a park entrance.
My wife and I surprised our girls with a return trip to the Barn Loft. Andrea and Steve are great hosts. We love spending time with all of the animals on the property as well as relaxing taking in the beautiful mountain views.
We look forward to returning again in the future!
We absolutely loved our stay at the farm! Incredible property. We can’t wait to return in the summer/fall to see the farm in a different season. The hosts are so friendly and welcoming. This is a very special property and I would highly recommend it to just about everyone.
Our family stayed 3 nights in the Barn Loft for a relaxing getaway. We originally planned to go hiking in Shenandoah, but we found more than enough activities and fun on the farm, so we didn't make it to Shenandoah. It was fun to interact with the animals and the views are spectacular. We highly recommend this place and can't wait to return.

Thanks so much for staying with us! We enjoyed sharing our farm with you and hope to see you again soon.
The location is perfect and the generosity of the hosts can not be beat! If you are looking for a place close to Sperryville but not far off the beaten path, this place is for you. There are actually 3 choices of rental homes on the 100+ acres so you can choose the option best suited for you and your family. We loved our stay, thought Andrea and Steve were the best of hosts, and hope to return later this year!
We had the best time in the barn loft at the farm. My husband and I love the breath-taking views, and our 19 month old daughter enjoyed the animals. We didn't even mind being woken by the roosters at 5:30 AM because it allowed us to watch the beautiful sunrises. We can't wait to return.

Beautiful Fall Weekend
We can not say enough about how amazing this property is. The owners were wonderful and spent time teaching our two girls about the many farm animals. The views are breathtaking and the barn loft is comfortable with everything you could possibly need. We will be back!

I have been before and will return. Ty! It is a spectacular view any time of day and in any weather. The barnyard comes to life early and it’s a lively vibrant scene all day. The nearby town of sperryville has a lot to offer. The blue rock restaurant is superb and has a level two Tesla charger. I recommend the barn loft and the farmhouse where I stayed the first time. Maybe next trip the poor house!

Beautiful and Stunning!
We came for a quick getaway weekend. The farm is postcard perfect! The loft is very nice and modern. Our favorite was playing on the pond with the stand up paddle board, canoe, and pedal boat. Our labrador loved to swim along! My two girls loved hanging out with the chickens, feeding them and waiting for them to lay eggs. We'll definitely be back!!

This is a very unusual property - a meticulously kept farm with very friendly animals that our kids loved. Beautiful setting on a hill with a stunning view. Owners are on site and responsive. We got a little intro and your when we arrived. We loved sitting on the little deck of the Loft where we watched and listened to animals (songbirds and farm animals) and viewed the hills and sunsets.
We are hoping to return!
Thank you Andrea and Steve!

Just perfect for a weekend getaway
We were looking for a place for a romantic weekend getaway and this was it! Since we like to travel with our dogs, they had to be factored in too and we couldn't have been happier with the dog friendliness of Cardinal Springs Farm. Andrea and Steve were such gracious hosts and the Barn Loft left nothing to be desired. We even went downstairs to the chicken coop to get eggs for breakfast, just wow! It was short drive into Sperryville, where we got takeout pizza at Rappahannock Pizza Kitchen one night and enjoyed the new Three Blacksmiths the other night. Be sure to book the latter well in advance, but it is sooo worth the wait. Thank you for a wonderful stay and sharing the farm with us. We'll definitely be back!
Oh my goodness…what a lovely time we had! We stayed in The Loft and found it to be cozy and comfortable with a fabulous view. Beds were comfortable and there’s a full kitchen to cook! The fire pit was a favorite place to hang out in the evenings and the view is to die for. The chickens and goats are directly below The Loft and you can hear the rooster in the morning but it’s faint and it didn’t bother us at all. We loved gathering eggs and feeding the goats and mules/horse. Andrea was so welcoming and informative and shared her knowledge with us. We can’t wait to come back and enjoy the pond and of course the animals.

Breathtaking
Driving into the property was like leaving the world behind. Rolling hills all around, and nothing but the gorgeous home and farm buildings on the property. There is no sound other than the sounds of nature. The animals you can visit are in immaculate barns and each has their own radio for company. The coup de gras is the pond/lake with it's large gazebo for sitting, reading, eating. There are two floating chairs, a canoe and a paddleboat to use. The "barn" we stayed in was beautifully outfitted, homey and contained all the modern conveniences. I don't want to sound like a "Hallmark" card but it was a haven for us, just what we all needed to make a perfect birthday for our 15 year old grandson.

Cozy cottage in beautiful setting with spectacular views of Shenandoah
We stayed 5 days in this property in December 2019 and we all loved everything about it. The combination of a well designed and comfortable cottage, that had everything we needed, with a serene setting, fantastic views of Shenandoah and the animal farm made this a great choice for us. The property offered great freedom to our kids, 11 and 12, to really run around and spend time with the animals. They loved the friendly goats and of course, the incredible and generous chickens. We had fresh eggs everyday and it was fun for the kids to find where they were hidden in the barn. Even our dog enjoyed extra freedom in one of the fields, where she could run without without any risk for her or the animals in the farm.
The property is beautiful. The rolling hills are very soothing, with colors that change throughout the day. On top of that, the views of Shenandoah are spectacular and trails along Rt 231 or skyline drive are a 15 min drive away.
Andrea and Steve were very kind and caring, and we enjoyed learning from them about the animals in the farm and the history of the property. We would love to come again and experience the farm in a different season.

Amazing, unique experience
Staying in the barn loft is an amazing, unique experience! Cardinal Springs farm is absolutely beautiful and relaxing. Sipping my morning coffee on the deck while looking over the rolling hills and mountains was surreal. The apartment has an at home feel with everything you need. When booking it I was concerned my 11 and 13 year old would get bored after a day or two without the constant stimulation they are used too. They were in heaven. They spent hours playing with the goats and catching the chickens. They loved helping to bring the baby goats in at night. They fished off the dock everyday catching too many fish to count. The owners were away while we were there. The farm hand was beyond friendly. He taught my children some basics and even set up a camp fire for us. Shenandoah National Park and the Luray Caverns are a short ride away and both worth spending time at. We also rented a raft and went down the Shenandoah river and visited Jefferson’s Monticello. The area has so much to offer. I highly recommend staying at Cardinal Springs Farm and hope we have the opportunity to visit again.

An enviable and beautiful haven on our ravaged rock
We thoroughly enjoyed our time here. Honestly, it is a little hard to believe how picturesque this place is. The view off the deck with its rolling hill, horse grazing, and blue ridge in the background while the sunsets will have you wondering if you just entered a Nancy Myers movie (of which there are many to chose from in the cabin BTW. Also, bring a book if you are not into movies as there isn’t any cable, cell service and the internet is spotty so no streaming). It is close to Shenandoah National park for good side trips. The fishing on the private lake is literally the best I have ever encountered. No lie, the first cast resulted in a 2lb bass. On day two of fishing, I went 4 out of 6 and honestly had to set the pole aside to relax with my beer. The cabin is bigger and nicer than the photos let on. Feeding the horses, goats, and chickens were something we looked forward to every day. It is close to the Corner Store which has everything you need and next to a great pizza place. Plenty of wineries and distilleries nearby. We took advantage of the wonderful fire pit on our last night and I could have spent the night out there. Steve and Andrea are delightful and we truly can not wait to get back, hopefully, this fall. The only down side, for us, was all the pro-Trump signs.

About the host
Hosted by Andrea Wooten and Steve Ray
Originally from Texas (Andrea) and California (Steve), we consider ourselves 'refugees' from the Washington, DC suburbs, where we lived and worked for 18 years. We first visited Rappahannock County in 2002 for a retreat, and immediately fell in love with the Blue Ridge and all the area has to offer. After several years of looking at real estate, we bought the historic 130 acre county 'Poor Farm' in 2002 and began an extensive remodeling of the old farm house and barn. We also added ponds, roads, a dock, fencing, an orchard, extensive flower and vegetable gardens, and animals (mules, horses, goats, chickens, dogs, barn cats, guineas, ducks, and cattle). In 2010, we moved to our new home on the farm--a Virginia farmhouse with a big wrap around porch. And in 2012, we restored the old chicken coop and added chickens to our little menagerie. We also completed work on a new barn that includes our 'Barn Loft' to accommodate additional visitors. Finally, in July 2019, we finished a total renovation of the original Poorhouse and added it as our third rental property so that we could accommodate larger families and groups. Our farm is our little slice of heaven, and we feel blessed to share it with those who stay with us!
Why they chose this property
The Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia are one of the most beautiful places on earth to us! And Rappahannock County embodies values that we hold dear: close friends, strong sense of community, amazing commitment to conservation and stewardship of the earth, and a rural lifestyle that allows us stay in touch with ourselves and live our priorities. The area also has a vibrant arts community, world class hiking, excellent restaurants and inns, including the Inn at Little Washington, interesting shops, art galleries, and antique stores, and holistic medicine options. It is also close to Washington, DC and Charlottesville, Virginia, and a little over an hour to both Dulles and Washington Reagan airports. We could not think of a more ideal place to live and work!
What makes this property unique
Our property is secluded, at the end of a lovely country lane only 5 minutes from the little town of Sperryville. It is a place where the star lit sky sparkles so clearly at night that you almost lose your breath in awe...where lush flower and vegetable gardens and views of the Blue Ridge feed our soul...where fish jump in the pond and the birds and frogs compete in a chorus...where the only sounds are those of nature. Our cozy, completely remodeled farmhouse provides an ideal place to relax and unwind, and our 130 acres of forest, pastures, and ponds provide endless hiking, swimming, canoeing, fishing, biking, and exploration opportunities. Our friendly farm animals will love and entertain you. If you are looking for a place to relax, unwind, and get away from it all, this is just the place! We are pet friendly.
