If you'd rather prepare your own meals, you can do it in your modern, fully equipped kitchen featuring granite countertops and new cabinetry and stainless steel appliances. Dining options on the farm range from picnics in the woods to romantic, candle lit meals on the dock or screened porch with views of the pond and the Blue Ridge.

Our new upscale Barn Loft features a modern kitchen with stainless appliances, soapstone counters, and slate floors opening into a great room with a Vermont Castings wood stove to keep you cozy in the winter. A large deck adds a very special outdoor room with magical views of the mountains, ponds, and pastures below. Two cozy bedrooms with queen and full beds welcome you after a day of hiking, swimming, or just relaxing. Ceiling fans in every room make the central air conditioning necessary only in the hottest days of summer. The Loft comes equipped with a laundry room and is easily accessible for those with physical limitations.

Finally, if you would like to fully experience rural life, you are welcome to help us with the many projects that farm living offers, from gardening to caring for our farm family of goats, horses, mules, chickens, ducks, guineas, cats, and dogs. About Andrea Wooten and Steve Ray

Originally from Texas (Andrea) and California (Steve), we consider ourselves 'refugees' from the Washington, DC suburbs, where we lived and worked for 18 years. We first visited Rappahannock County in 2002 for a retreat, and immediately fell in love with the Blue Ridge and all the area has to offer. After several years of looking at real estate, we bought the historic 130 acre county 'Poor Farm' in 2002 and began an extensive remodeling of the old farm house and barn. We also added ponds, roads, a dock, fencing, an orchard, extensive flower and vegetable gardens, and animals (2 mules, 2 horses, 7 goats, 16 chickens, 2 dogs, 4 barn cats, with more planned!). In 2010, we moved to our new home on the farm--a Virginia farmhouse with a big wrap around porch. And in 2012, we restored the old chicken coop and added chickens to our little menagerie. We also completed work on a new barn that includes a new 'Barn Loft' to accommodate additional visitors. Our farm is our little slice of heaven, and we feel blessed to share it with those who stay with us!

Andrea Wooten and Steve Ray purchased this barn in 2004

Why Andrea Wooten and Steve Ray chose Northern Virginia

The Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia are one of the most beautiful places on earth to us! And Rappahannock County embodies values that we hold dear: close friends, strong sense of community, amazing commitment to conservation and stewardship of the earth, and a rural lifestyle that allows us stay in touch with ourselves and live our priorities. The area also has a vibrant arts community, world class hiking, excellent restaurants and inns, including the Inn at Little Washington, interesting shops and antique stores, and holistic medicine options. It is also close to Washington, DC and Charlottesville, Virginia, and a little over an hour to both Dulles and Washington Reagan airports. We could not think of a more ideal place to live and work!

What makes this barn unique

Our property is secluded, at the end of a lovely country lane only 5 minutes from the little town of Sperryville. It is a place where the star lit sky sparkles so clearly at night that you almost lose your breath in awe...where lush flower and vegetable gardens and views of the Blue Ridge feed our soul...where fish jump in the pond and the birds and frogs compete in a chorus...where the only sounds are those of nature. Our cozy, completely remodeled farmhouse provides an ideal place to relax and unwind, and our 130 acres of forest, pastures, and ponds provide endless hiking, swimming, canoeing, fishing, biking, and exploration opportunities. Our friendly farm animals will love and entertain you. If you are looking for a place to relax, unwind, and get away from it all, this is just the place!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you so much for your hospitality over this extended Memorial Day week-end. We had a wonderful time relaxing, enjoying family, and getting to know all the friendly animals that share this beautiful farm with you. The Loft makes getting away to the outdoors a truly luxurious getaway too! Everything was wonderful and we will be back.

Perfect modern farm getaway in the mountains

  • 5 of 5

My wife, 9 yr old daughter and I recently stayed at Cardinal Springs Farm for 2 nights. We were blown away by the scenery and tranquil beauty of the property and area. The accommodations were perfect with a fully stocked kitchen, a comfortable living room, and two lovely bedrooms. All the appliances are new and the decor makes you feel at home.

My daughter enjoyed tending to the ducks and chickens, collecting eggs and helping to feed them. Andrea was quick to invite her to be a part of the daily fun on the farm answering all her curious questions about the animals and gardening. From the fresh eggs, to picking black raspberries to the fresh picked garlic Andrea offered us, we had a great taste of organic farm foods.

While there, we visited Luray Caverns (a must see!) and took an awesome hike to a waterfall in Shenandoah park that Andrea recommended. Both excursions were very close and easy to get to from the farm. The town had a great little grocery store too. The only downfall was that many of the little shops, wineries and businesses were not open while we were there (Mon-Wed), as they only seem to open later in the week and weekends.

The farm hand was also extremely nice. We had fun talking to him and he would always stop to say hello, answer questions and see if we needed anything. He kept the animal areas, barns and farm looking immaculate.

We highly recommend staying here! Bring bug spray and bottled water. We found the tap water to have a different taste and the bugs to be pretty bad if you didn't spray yourself pretty good.

Those are our only small complaints, and certainly not the fault of the farm! We hope to go back again!

Thanks Andrea for being an awesome host and sharing your incredible property with us!

A Wonderful Family Getaway on the Farm

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four (two adults, kids 11 & 8) came here for a last minute getaway from DC during Spring Break and had a wonderful time. The barn loft was very nice and cozy with everything we needed for a comfortable stay. And the property is absolutely gorgeous! Our kids loved visiting the animals, collecting eggs, feeding the goats and cats, and just roaming around (we adults did, too). The location is convenient to Luray Caverns and Shenandoah NPS, and we enjoying outings to both. We spent afternoons at the pond with the canoe, stand up paddleboard, and pedal boats, and roasted marshmallows around the fire pit in the evening. Andrew and Steve were lovely hosts and made us feel very welcome -- as did their dog Molly. It's such an easy, relaxing escape from the bustle of the city. We'll definitely return to enjoy it all again.

Gorgeous property, great for couples and families!

  • 5 of 5

We came here for my husband's birthday and to have dinner at nearby Inn at Little Washington. The pictures do not do it justice. Serene and beautiful! The farm fresh eggs were amazing. The barn loft was beautifully appointed and comfortable. The spring fed pond was refreshing on an abnormally hot april weekend. The farmhand Nahum was a delight, very helpful and great to talk to. We cannot wait to come back with our young son!

Cardinal Springs is an absolutely beautiful setting!!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed the first weekend of February and had perfect weather. We were with our 2 boys and pup. Boys loved tending to the chickens (collecting eggs) and playing with the goats!! The trails around the property were perfect for hiking with the boys and letting our dog run free. Andrea and Steve were great hosts and made sure to answer all our boys questions about the animals! Great family weekend and would love to come back during warmer weather to make use of the pond.

Wonderful family weekend getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four humans, plus our dog, recently spent a beautiful weekend in the barn loft at Cardinal Springs. The kids (ages 4 and 7) were enchanted by the chickens and goats -- they particularly loved collecting eggs, and giving treats to the goats (peanuts) and horses (apples). My husband and I loved the amazing scenery and cozy accommodations. The wood-burning stove warmed us up after days spent hiking the farm and exploring Sperryville. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook meals. The bedrooms were roomy and had lovely views from the windows. It was exactly what we needed! And all of this was a mere hour and a half from DC. We can't wait to return!
