About the property

1 BR, Beautiful Views, Sunsets, Leave your car--5 min walk to everywhere!

Unfortunately, I am not taking more reservations for mid-August on, as the Cottage will most likely not be available. As of this week (6/21), the plans to replace the parking deck and stairs are at the Planning Dept. for approval and then out for bids. The architects are leaving a 1-3 (!) month window for construction after after the permits are approved (4-6 weeks). The reason you can’t make a reservation is that I have all those dates blocked off. I hadn't decided to list this in my blurb until I had harder dates, but now they’re shaping up. Whether I'll re-open is still under debate.

I'm so sorry.

Catherine

This one bedroom hillside cottage (2 blocks from the ocean) has great Wi-Fi, DVD player with 50 DVD's (watch Smart TV, movies from your computer), an ocean view deck, BBQ, patio furniture, umbrellas, and 2 chaise lounges.

This classic home, built in 1923, has original redwood floors, open-beamed rooms and a classic 20's feel. It has been moderately remodeled, repainted, and includes a gas fireplace with fan, a newer stove and refrigerator, a fully stocked kitchen with a microwave and programmable coffeemaker, coffee grinder, blender, etc., an old, classic farmhouse drop leaf table and chairs, a futon sofa that can be converted to a chaise lounge and bed, a leather reading chair/ottoman and up/down window shades so you can sit and watch the ocean, sunsets, village activities, whales in the Fall, Pt. Reyes cliffs, and the Bolinas coast.

The bedroom has a newer Posturepedic Medium Queen mattress on a platform frame ('very comfortable!'). The reading lamps are rated "very good!" There is a very large armoire closet to hang your clothes and/or store suitcases. There is also a shelf and clothes rod that run the full length of the bedroom.

We provide very nice bed linens, thick bath towels, beach chairs, beach umbrella, large beach towels, small ice chest, and some games and books. There is a landline phone, a Bose stereo/AM-FM radio/CD player (bring your favorite CD's).

In town, here is a classic general store, library, gym, bookstore, art galleries, florist, quaint post office, health and wellness center for massages and chiropractic, 2 parks, a non-denominational church, a community center (walk to the wedding or yoga classes!) and 3+ restaurants; a couple with live music. Stinson is the classic small town but without a gas station (fill up before you come!). There is a laundromat in Bolinas.

This Fall (2016) we had dozens of breaching, playful humpback whales going south. Very exciting! And we have brown pelicans, egrets, sandpipers, and hummingbirds. The Bolinas Lagoon is a Bird Sancturary that draws a lot of birders. The Audubon Society has a bird sanctuary down the road where you can watch white egrets nest in June and July. Several hiking and biking trails start a short walk from the Cottage, and the notorious Dipsea foot race from Mill Valley ends at the beach.

From the San Francisco Chronicle:

Stinson Beach in Marin County has just about everything you could ask for in a Bay Area beach. Best all-around!! Stinson Beach has pretty much everything you could want in a Northern California beach town: clearer weather than San Francisco, natural beauty and enough space to deal with the often sizable weekend crowds.

Scenic views of Point Reyes and the cliffy coastline. Numerous hiking trails in the vicinity, including the popular Dipsea Trail, a 9.5-mile round trip that leads from Muir Beach across creeks and stunning hills down to the coast. The Dipsea also winds over the hill to the town of Mill Valley-lots of stairs. Many trails connect, so you can create your own experience.

There are several good restaurants in town, from the Sand Dollar, a rockin' food/bar/live music on the weekends (Blues to Jazz, R&R, Country...), to the Parkside, a restaurant near the beach with a wonderful bakery attached, both a 5 minute walk away. There are two takeout food stands, one on the way to the beach and one on the beach.

Nearby is Muir State Park with old-growth Redwood trees--a not-to-miss incredible place. There is an entrance fee and go early, as parking is very limited.

About Catherine Cicotte

I have been in Marin for 23 years, after living on Maui for 17. I am a psychotherapist in San Francisco and, unfortunately, the commute was just too far to live in my cottage. I recently cut my practice back, moved and created this wonderful vacation rental for others to enjoy.

Looking back, I have had a pretty interesting life, from SF in the 70's, to being a hippie living on Maui in a hand-built cottage with no electricity, a propane refrigerator, and a kerosene stove for 7 years while going to Nursing School. I've traveled through Tibet overland in 1980 on a dirt, one-lane road from Kathmandu to Llasa and getting a private tour of H.H.,The Dalai Lama's private rooms in the Norbulinka Summer Palace, from which he left to go into exile...and lots more.

Catherine Cicotte purchased this cottage in 2007

Why Catherine Cicotte chose San Francisco Bay Area

This cottage is so classic, I couldn't resist! I grew up in Northern Michigan on Lake Michigan and we had an authentic 1900's log cabin on an inland lake near Millersburg. I lived on Maui for 17 years and in San Francisco in the 70's. I like the relaxed, vacation-style of living in Stinson Beach. The cottage is quickly walkable to the beach, stores, trails, and restaurants, which the beachfront houses are not (more driving!). You can park your car and leave it and still do a multitude of things!

What makes this cottage unique

The cottage has one of the best locations in Stinson: views, off-street, and short walkability to everything. There are oodles of hummingbirds clicking and watching you.The stars are bright and walks in the dark are totally safe. Each night I went to sleep with the sound of the waves crashing (the winter waves are fabulous!). The sounds of live music on sunny weekend afternoons waft up the hill--lounge on the deck and relax to good, subdued music and people watching after a full day--the best!

Guestbook comments from the owner

"We really enjoyed your vacation home. I really liked the decor and feeling I got being there. The smells are wonderful too. My friend and I went there to relax and that is exactly what we did. I love the deck and the chairs pointing to the ocean. I loved the Buddha corner outside. And I am totally into the mirrors in the bathroom. The antique looking ones. We enjoyed playing Mancala.. the marble game.

We had everything we needed there. The only thing us city folk had to get used to was no cable TV! But it was totally worth it. the view from the couch looking outside the window was amazing! I would definitely stay there again!"

Notes:
Cottage was built in the 1920's as a summer cottage for folks from San Francisco. It retains a lot of this flavor: original redwood floors with scars, peaked, beamed ceilings, clapboard kitchen wall. Has been upgraded but is still an authentic, relaxing beach cottage on the hill. Will sleep 4 (2 adults and 1 child) if 4th is a baby and can use a Pack n Play. Has landline. Quiet hours after10 pm until 9 am

Cozy and close to the beach

  • 5 of 5

This cozy cottage had everything we needed for our stay. It's only a 1/4 mile from the door to the beach. Half that to the little commercial center of town. There's a view of the ocean and gorgeous mountains from every window, and all of the windows make the place feel bright and open. I was skeptical of the heaters, but they did an amazing job keeping the rooms warm when needed.

The beach is about 3 miles long and hard packed at low tide, which was great for running. There are limited food choices in town, so I'd definitely recommend cooking for yourself, especially if you have any special diets. The kitchen had everything we needed (except maybe a spaghetti server, though we always bring our own): all sizes of pots, a small skillet, a decent strainer, measuring cups, a full complement of plates/bowls/mugs and silverware, toaster, microwave, coffee maker, small gas stove.

Just note that you'll have to go up/down several flights of stairs to reach the cottage from the street. If that's a problem for you, I wouldn't recommend it.

We had a great time, and would definitely stay here again. Thanks, Catherine!

Cozy Little Spot

We love this cozy little spot. Close to the town, and its smallness is its charm.

Owner's Response: I'm honored, as this was their second visit! Yep, it's cozy and homey, but perfect for 2 guests and perhaps a child over 8 years old. It has French doors that can open completely, 2 large 6' x 4' front windows and a large deck, so it feels much more spacious. The 3 sides of the deck have 2 privacy hedges and the cottage wall, and the front overlooks the Ocean and the Village down below (good for people watching!) from the 2 lounge chairs. The sound of the waves makes it very quiet, like a white noise machine. You can walk anywhere in 5 to 7 minutes--park that car and relax! As you can see from this review and my past reviews, guests love it!

Property was comfortable, clean and had a really nice private deck with plenty of lounge chairs.

We enjoyed Catherine's cottage during our recent stay in Stinson Beach. It contained everything we needed and we especially enjoyed the deck surrounded by flowering bushes. Nice view of the ocean! Parking was pretty challenging so it would be great if there could be designated parking for each of the cottages in that complex. The timing of our visit was around a family wedding and since it was in September, Stinson Beach was really crowded. It would be nice to go back to visit at another time of the year when it might be less busy.

We highly recommend Catherine's cottage if you are looking for a nice place to stay while vacationing in Stinson Beach.

Owner's Response: I'm sorry your experience was 4-stars, not 5. It didn't seem to be about the Cottage or location. I know parking was difficult because many wedding guests, several whom you knew, were staying nearby. The wedding work crew had to park, too. I'm sure it was a mess out there! I do say it is street parking in my information and email, but it is hard to visualize. Plus, everyone, beach goers included, wants to park close to the beach and the Cottage is that. The parking deck isn't safe, so no one can park there. The owners, for 4 spaces, were recently quoted around $150,000 to replace it and the stairs, and we'd still be short on off-street parking. Owners who don't rent their Cottages just aren't going to give up a space they spent about $25K for! Without the deck, at least we're all in this together!! :-) ****************************************************************************** For any FUTURE GUESTS running into this WEDDING/BEACH CRUNCH in the summer (mid-June thru mid-Oct.), off-load in front (there's room for cars and trucks to get by), and go up Laurel one block, turn left, and it is wide open. Yes, your car isn't in front, but it saves on anxiety! If you take a day trip and come back later, you may very well find a SPACE IN FRONT. I have been keeping track, and GUESTS ON NORMAL SUMMER WEEKENDS WHO WANT TO, DO. I don't have a solution, but right now I'm all for paving Paradise and putting in another beach parking lot!

Sweet, chic ocean getaway

  • 5 of 5

I wanted a quiet retreat with access to downtown and the ocean. I felt comfortable in the home, loved the style, and the views and sounds of the ocean, and the walk to the town and beach was 5-10 minutes. Catherine was super welcoming and helpful in her communications. I will go back and tell my friends. It was great for me as a single traveler, but would accomodate a couple or even a couple with a child or a buddy. Loved it!

Wonderful location with a exquisite view

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I loved this location! We had such a wonderful time our only complaint was that we couldn't stay longer! Not only do you get a beautiful view but the sound of the waves will lull you to sleep! Between the cabin and the deck this is the perfect place to escape to enjoy a relaxing vacation away from it all. It was a pleasure to rent your home...hope to see you again soon😀. You gave us a vacation that we won't forget!

Easy drive to the top of Mt. Tamalpais (Tam). The Matt Davis Trail starts about 3 minutes from the cabin. It hooks up with the famous Dipsea trail and the Coastal Trail. 2 other trail heads are about 10-12 minutes away. A bus, the West Marin Stage Coach, stops at several trail heads. Search for Golden Gate Transit for a schedule. There is a Marin Hiking Book at the cabin.

Muir Beach is beautiful, rocky cove/beach about a 20 minute drive around the coast. Keep going for another 10 and Green Gulch Zen Center (SFZC.org) is on your right. There is a Sunday program of meditation and a dharma talk, muffins and tea. It's a certified organic farm and Sundays they serve wonderful organic soup, salad and their famous bread about 12:00.

There is a Laundromat and gas station in Bolinas, about a 20 min. drive away. There are no signs to Bolinas! Just drive around the Lagoon, as if going to Pt. Reyes, and take the first left. (CalTrans has given up putting up signs: they go up during the day and are gone by the next morning. Bumper stickers say, "Keep Bolinas Weird!")
