Overview

About the property

1 BR/1 BA, Beautiful Views, Sunsets, Leave your car--5 min walk to everywhere!

This one bedroom hillside cottage (2 blocks from the ocean) has great Wi-Fi, DVD player with 50 DVD's (Watch Showtime, Netflix, Hulu, etc., whatever you have an account for, from your computer. I have the cords), a private ocean view deck, BBQ, patio furniture, 2 umbrellas, and 2 chaise lounges.

This classic home, built in 1923, has original redwood floors, open-beamed rooms and a classic 20's feel. It has been moderately remodeled, repainted, and includes a gas fireplace with heat fan, a newer stove and refrigerator, a fully stocked kitchen with a microwave and programmable coffeemaker, coffee grinder, blender, etc., an old, classic farmhouse drop leaf table and chairs, a futon sofa that can be converted to a chaise lounge and bed, a leather reading chair/ottoman and top down window shades so you can sit and watch the ocean, sunsets, village activities, whales in the Fall, Pt. Reyes cliffs, and the Bolinas coast.

The bedroom has a newer Posturepedic Medium Queen mattress on a platform frame ('very comfortable!'). The reading lamps are rated "very good!" There is a very large armoire closet to hang your clothes and/or store suitcases. There is also a shelf and a bookcase in the bedroom.

We provide very nice bed linens, thick bath towels, beach chairs, beach umbrella, large beach towels, small ice chest, and some games and books. There is a landline phone, a Bose stereo/AM-FM radio/CD player (bring your favorite CD's).

In town, here is a classic general store, library, gym, bookstore, art galleries, florist, quaint 100 year old post office, health and wellness center for massages and chiropractic, a medical office open on Fridays (that takes Kaiser, too), 2 parks, a non-denominational church, a community center (walk to the wedding or yoga classes!) and 4+ restaurants; a couple with live music. Stinson is the classic small town but without a gas station (fill up before you come!). There are laundromats in Bolinas and Olema..

Last Fall (2016) we had dozens of breaching, playful humpback whales going south. Very exciting! And we have brown pelicans, egrets, sandpipers, one blue heron :-( and hummingbirds. The Bolinas Lagoon is a Bird Sanctuary that draws a lot of birders. The Audubon Society has a bird sanctuary down the road where you can watch large white egrets nest in June and July. Several hiking (the Matt Davis Trail that link up to the Coastal Trail) and biking trails start a short walk from the Cottage, and the notorious Dipsea foot race from Mill Valley ends at the beach. There is a bus system called the "West Marin Stagecoach," that goes all over West Marin and into a Sausalito shopping center if you're Jonesing for a Starbuck's. It stops at trailheads if you want to walk one way. The fare is $2.Take it to Pt. Reyes Station and have lunch/shop and it will be back in 2 hours to take you home.

From the San Francisco Chronicle:

Stinson Beach in Marin County has just about everything you could ask for in a Bay Area beach. Best all-around!! Stinson Beach has pretty much everything you could want in a Northern California beach town: clearer weather than San Francisco, natural beauty and enough space to deal with the often sizable weekend crowds.

Scenic views of Point Reyes and the cliffy coastline. Numerous hiking trails in the vicinity, including the popular Dipsea Trail, a 9.5-mile round trip that leads from Muir Beach across creeks and stunning hills down to the coast. The Dipsea also winds over the hill to the town of Mill Valley-lots of stairs. Many trails connect, so you can create your own experience.

There are several good restaurants in town, from the Sand Dollar, a rockin' food/bar/live music on the weekends (Blues to Jazz, R&R, Country...), to the Parkside, a restaurant near the beach with a wonderful bakery attached, both a 5 minute walk away. There are two takeout food stands, one on the way to the beach and one on the beach.

Nearby is Muir State Park with old-growth Redwood trees--a not-to-miss incredible place. There is an entrance fee and go early, as parking is very limited.

About Catherine Cicotte

I have been in Marin for 23 years, after living on Maui for 17. I am a psychotherapist in San Francisco and, unfortunately, the commute was just too far to live in my cottage. I recently cut my practice back, moved and created this wonderful vacation rental for others to enjoy.

Looking back, I have had a pretty interesting life, from SF in the 70's, to being a hippie living on Maui in a hand-built cottage with no electricity, a propane refrigerator, and a kerosene stove for 7 years while going to Nursing School. I've traveled through Tibet overland in 1980 on a dirt, one-lane road from Kathmandu to Llasa and getting a private tour of H.H.,The Dalai Lama's private rooms in the Norbulinka Summer Palace, from which he left to go into lots more.

Catherine Cicotte purchased this cottage in 2007

Why Catherine Cicotte chose Stinson Beach

This cottage is so classic, I couldn't resist! I grew up in Northern Michigan on Lake Michigan and we had an authentic 1900's log cabin on an inland lake near Millersburg. I lived on Maui for 17 years and in San Francisco in the 70's. I like the relaxed, vacation-style of living in Stinson Beach. The cottage is quickly walkable to the beach, stores, trails, and restaurants, which the beachfront houses are not (more driving!). You can park your car and leave it and still do a multitude of things!

What makes this cottage unique

The cottage has one of the best locations in Stinson: views, off-street, and short walkability to everything. There are oodles of hummingbirds clicking and watching you.The stars are bright and walks in the dark are totally safe. Each night I went to sleep with the sound of the waves crashing (the winter waves are fabulous!). The sounds of live music on sunny weekend afternoons waft up the hill--lounge on the deck and relax to good, subdued music and people watching after a full day--the best!

Guestbook comments from the owner

"We really enjoyed your vacation home. I really liked the decor and feeling I got being there. The smells are wonderful too. My friend and I went there to relax and that is exactly what we did. I love the deck and the chairs pointing to the ocean. I loved the Buddha corner outside. And I am totally into the mirrors in the bathroom. The antique looking ones. We enjoyed playing Mancala.. the marble game.

We had everything we needed there. The only thing us city folk had to get used to was no cable TV! But it was totally worth it. the view from the couch looking outside the window was amazing! I would definitely stay there again!"

Notes:
Cottage was built in the 1920's as a summer cottage for folks from San Francisco. It retains a lot of this flavor: original redwood floors with scars, peaked, beamed ceilings, clapboard kitchen wall. Has been upgraded but is still an authentic, relaxing beach cottage on the hill. Will sleep 4 (2 adults and 1 child) if 4th is a baby and can use a Pack n Play. Has landline. Quiet hours after10 pm until 9 am

Spent 4 days in December 2017 at this cottage. Very comfortable, clean and tidy. Location is great, in the middle of everything AND with a view and privacy! Would stay again for sure!

Cozy beach view cottage

  • 5 of 5

Clean, cozy cottage in fun beach town. We enjoyed the view of the ocean and the deck was very nice although we weren't able to use it due to rain during our stay. Catherine was very accommodating! I would stay here again and recommend it to friends.

Helpful and attentive host

  • 5 of 5

Stayed here a few day during March. Host left detailed instructions for the cottage that were very helpful. Had a problem with one of the heaters and she immediately came over and fixed it. The location is great for hiking. We were able to hike in and out of town and didn’t even move the car one day. Other days the drive was short to get to trailheads. Nice beach a short walk away. She also gave us some nice suggestions for other things to do in the area. Parking is on street and we were always able to park within at least 5-6 car lengths from the stairs to the cottage.

Very cute cottage with everything you need

  • 5 of 5

We didn’t pick the best time to go to Stinson Beach (lots of rain and fog) but my daughter and I really enjoyed the ocean view cottage. We cooked dinner two nights and just enjoyed music or the sound of the ocean while playing cards. There’s no cell service or TV, so be aware of that. But for us, it was wonderful to disconnect a bit and TALK. Catherine is wonderful and really cares that you have a good stay. I can’t think of anything to suggest for improvements. Thank you Catherine!

Beautiful Cozy Cottage in Stinson

  • 5 of 5

This place is truly a gem! We've stayed here 3 years in a row, and enjoyed the serenity, the one minute walk to town and beach, the coziness of the space, the view of the ocean, and the doves cooing in the cool mornings. It's a small yet comforting space, and has all the amenities one could ask for. It's so close to town and the beach, yet it feels so remote from it all. We'll definitely be back next year.

Wonderful even in rain

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful, relaxing time at the cottage. The location is perfect- easy access to everything! I was especially impressed with the kitchen. There were pots, pans, all supplies that one could need. It wasn't the random, sparse situation that is often true with rentals.

Easy drive to the top of Mt. Tamalpais (Tam). The Matt Davis Trail starts about 3 minutes from the cabin. It hooks up with the famous Dipsea trail and the Coastal Trail. 2 other trail heads are about 10-12 minutes away. A bus, the West Marin Stage Coach, stops at several trail heads. Search for Golden Gate Transit for a schedule. There is a Marin Hiking Book at the cabin.

Muir Beach is beautiful, rocky cove/beach about a 20 minute drive around the coast. Keep going for another 10 and Green Gulch Zen Center (SFZC.org) is on your right. There is a Sunday program of meditation and a dharma talk, muffins and tea. It's a certified organic farm and Sundays they serve wonderful organic soup, salad and their famous bread about 12:00.

There is a Laundromat and gas station in Bolinas, about a 20 min. drive away. There are no signs to Bolinas! Just drive around the Lagoon, as if going to Pt. Reyes, and take the first left. (CalTrans has given up putting up signs: they go up during the day and are gone by the next morning. Bumper stickers say, "Keep Bolinas Weird!")
