About Mike Smith

We bought this cabin next to my parents cabin after a big storm had nearly destroyed it. We spent a year fixing it up, and have enjoyed it ever since. I grew up coming up here as a child, and was so lucky to give the same experience to my children. It's a wonderful place to simply be, to take time to nap, sleep, enjoy a creek, play hide-and-seek in the trees. It's lovely.

Mike Smith purchased this cabin in 1983

Why Mike Smith chose Sonoma County

The long story is my father grew up going as a Boy Scout from San Francisco to Camp Royaneh in the 1930's, just up the road. After WW2, and he had married my Mom and adopted us kids, he wanted the same experience of getting away from the City, so he and my Mom bought the cabin. So I grew up going up here, my older brother went to Camp Royaneh, and we spent many summers here. So my husband and I bought the cabin next door, and my kids grew up being able to run back and forth from the cabins and spend time with their Grandparents. There is nothing like a Creek in the woods for a lesson in Ecology for children. They can see tadpoles become frogs, water skeeters chasing smaller bugs, trout eating flies. At night, we wander down to the Creek and shine flashlights over the water to see bats eating. In the Fall and Winter, when the rains come, the small creek becomes a small river, and the smell during and after the rain, well, it smells fresh and primeval, like the world did at the dawn of time. We welcome you to stay and find out for yourself.

2nd Annual Anniversary Trip

  • 5 of 5

Last year, we only spent 2 nites in this cozy cabin - so we decided to up it to 3 for our 25th Anniversary. We only had 1 small problem in getting the stove to ignite......(thanks Mike for being available for my Panic Call) You truly are isolated, in that there is no cell phone reception. That's perfectly OK - you are totally focused on relaxing and enjoying the amenities--- which include outdoor lounging and looking up at the amazing trees. We were able to burn an outside fire this year, and I have video to prove it. Also - brought some night lights for wandering around in the middle of the nite - the bedroom can get pitch dark. It decided to rain on the 2nd nite we were there and that made it cozier. Looking forward to next year, and we are seriously considering buying property to retire in this area. Truly gorgeous.

Great place, communication needs improvement

  • 3 of 5

1) Five stars for the beautiful cabin. It was clean and we really enjoyed our time using the full kitchen and the fireplace. Very cozy.

2) Minus one star for the owner's lack of communication (I sent out one message on HomeAway, one direct email, and left one voicemail before arriving to the property re: logistics). The only response I received was one email sent the day before our arrival, and it was a standard "welcome" email re: house rules and regulations. Definitely made me nervous especially if you're someone like me, who likes to confirm reservations prior to arrival, which also allows me to get a feel of the owner.

3) Another star less because the owner did not respond to my email re: the refundable damage deposit, which I inquired about more than a week after staying at the cabin. I have stayed in many HomeAway rentals and AirBnBs and I always get my refundable damage deposit within three days. I understand that some owners take longer and that is fine; however, taking into consideration the lack of communication from this owner's end, I was nervous yet again. I finally received the refund after I sent the owner a HomeAway message (which he didn't reply to) which included a request to send an itemized bill detailing damages, which needs to be sent within 21 days under California Law. I got the refund immediately. I do not care about the money but I do value common courtesy.

Overall, great cabin but would neither recommend nor stay again.
