About Steve Cox

I am truly blessed to be not only a resident of the Big Island but to have the opportunity to manage such an incredible home for my dear friend. Helen, the owner, shares my compassion in ensuring our guests feel the true spirit of Aloha while staying at the Old Sugar Mill Plantation. So that our incoming guests know, in Hawai'i, we like to hug a lot! So if you reach out to shake a hand here, don't be surprised if they give you a hug in return. While you are here, you are family! It's the Hawaiian way of life.

Steve Cox purchased this house in 2013

Why Steve Cox chose Hilo District

We felt as though this home was all about spending quality time with family and friends. Walking the surrounding 26 acres brings on such a feeling of tranquility and amazes one at the beauties Hawai'i has to offer. While on the island, we love to spend time on the front lanai 'talking story' about Hawai'i, good times and our journeys to come.

What makes this house unique

There are few large homes like this Hawaii. It makes for the perfect family, corporate or event location.. You can prepare your own delicious meals in the spacious and modern kitchen as well as tour the acreage and pick your own fresh fruits straight from our orchards.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Copied from guest email - I am so happy with my decision to rent the Old Sugar Mill Plantation. I am an activities coordinator at an International Language school in Waikiki, and this is the first trip I have planned to the BI. In total our group was 22 people and the house was absolutely perfect! I could not have asked for a better location or a more beautiful house. The bedrooms are all so beautiful, the house clean, the 26 acres of land AMAZING! Unfortunately we were so busy we didn't have a whole lot of time to enjoy all of the property, but the waterfall is definitely a bonus. Most times I rent hotel rooms for our groups, but this house was a hit with the students. Everyone enjoyed cooking dinner together in the beautiful kitchen and getting to relax in the peaceful atmosphere. I could go on and on about this place, but ultimately it was the ideal place to bring a group as large as mine. Steve thank you for making us feel at home and being so helpful throughout the whole process! Mahalo! And I am sure you will be seeing us again!

Uniquely beautiful, a big lot, excellent ocean view and mountain view.

This is a very unique vacation rental place. We had a great family reunion Here. It's very relaxing with plenty of space for everyone. Early morning is a good time to watch sun rise in the ocean and Mouna Kea turning to red color. The slow pace of life and the Internet speed would you forget about work. We will definitely come again in the future.

The property was beautiful and we enjoyed the waterfall very much.

  • 5 of 5

The house had plenty of room and was on a gorgeous property. The kitchen was well equipped for our needs and The host were very helpful the few times we needed something. There are showers in all the bathrooms, no bath tubs and no grill outside. We hope to return for our next group trip!

The setting is beautiful, but the house needs work.

  • 2 of 5

The house is set on 26 acres and is a gorgeous setting! Lots of vegetation, a stream, a cute waterfall, a bridge, huge banana trees, tons of beautiful hibiscus trees lining the driveway full of flowers and a snow capped mountain out the kitchen window!

The house itself was dirty. There were dead bugs on all of the window sills and on the carpet, etc. There was a bad smell in the kitchen that we could not fix. The cookware was old and the Teflon was peeling off (very bad for your health!). We actually had to wash every pan, cooking utensil and piece of silverware before using it because it was all dirty. Even after we washed everything it just felt unsanitary. There is also a lack of pots, pans and cooking utensils. There were few glasses to use and they were all mismatched. We would quickly run out of hot water at the kitchen sink. There is no grill to cook on. The huge stove, oven and fridge was great, but the rest of the kitchen and what is in the cupboards needs to be upgraded (and thoroughly cleaned!) They also need to purchase complete sets of cookware and glassware, etc.

There is no living room on the main level which is odd. The dining room table was big, but it was covered in a big, ugly plastic table cloth that also felt sticky and unclean.

There is an awesome theater room on the main level, but the owners have chosen not to completely finish it, so it is useless. Evening movies in that room would be great so it is too bad they don't finish it.

More comfy outdoor furniture would be a nice addition to this home. The front porch is nice, but it is under utilized. An outdoor eating area with a grill would be nice to have at this house.

Most of the beds were hard and uncomfortable. There were a few that had pillow tops and those were the ones we used. We could not get hot water in our bathroom shower. It was just warm enough to shower in, but a hotter temperature would have been much nicer. The bedding on most of the beds is outdated and old and needs to be freshened up. This house does not supply any beach towels. We have rented lots of houses and they always supply beach towels. It was very disappointing to pack a beach towel for everyone in our family. It took up a lot of room in our suitcases.

The washer and dryer were big and came in very handy. There was laundry soap, dish soap, dish washer soap, shampoo and conditioner supplied in the house which was very helpful.

The house was in a good location, but needs some TLC.

Most fabulous vacation home ever!

  • 5 of 5

Our whole family enjoyed this luxurious home to the fullest. It was a perfect base for exploring the Island, from magnificent beaches to volcanoes to rain forests! We all loved the waterfall right on the property, especially the kids. The adults enjoyed sitting on the porch and watching the birds. Each room is beautifully decorated and has its own bath, great for a big group. And the kitchen is well equipped for preparing and serving a large meal. A wonderful experience! In short, we loved it!
