Overview

About the property

5BR, 4 Ba with panoramic views, this spacious home affords every comfort.

"We were looking for a house spacious enough that we could all sit around the dining room table--Twig and Nest did not disappoint us. The house felt like a home that someone cared about."--

Kelly B-Signal Mountain, TN 5/20/16

"JOY"--the perfect word to describe our weekend. Your effort to make the house 'magazine ready' was appreciated by all. Thank you so much for sharing your winter wonderland with our mom's club. The perfect escape, and we all needed it." (12/13/15)

Mom's Club from Birmingham, AL

"Your house was exactly as you described it" (Nadia from Georgia, 03/12/16)

"'Everyone who came by remarked what a beautiful home it was and what a beautiful setting with all the trees. The wedding planner was so impressed, she is going to recommend it to all her brides.'" (J. Sandifer, Germantown, TN, 10/20/14).

"'We absolutely loved your home and plan on returning. We don't cook much any more, other than breakfast but your kitchen is so well equipped, we could turn out a grand repast,'" (U. Higgins, Aug. 2014).

These comments reflect the experiences of guests who have stayed at my mountain home in Highlands. Twig and Nest enjoys the best of both worlds: woodland beauty and privacy conveniently located just minutes away from the charming town of Highlands, NC.

The spacious interior, with two-story Great Room (17' x 27') opening up to a skylit covered deck with stone fireplace and sunset views is designed for entertaining.

The custom designed Chef's kitchen with breakfast bar, center island, and butler's pantry has ample space for several cooks. Cosy private dining room can seat 8 people comfortably.

The house is tastefully furnished with an eclectic collection of antiques, art and memorabilia from my travels. Many nice touches add to the mountain ambience: cathedral ceilings with clerestory windows, antler chandelier, wide plank wood floors, outdoor fire pit, swings and hammocks, spa bathrooms, stone pathways, stacked stone wood-burning fireplaces, perennial gardens and custom woodwork. Televisions in both Master Suites, Great Room and Kitchen for your convenience and enjoyment. Covered parking for two cars and additional parking for 4 more vehicles.

The house can accommodate two families or groups comfortably. The main level contains a Master Bedroom suite on one side of the Gathering Room and two bedrooms and a bath on the other side. All bedrooms on the main level have woodland and/or garden views.

A few steps down from the main level is an apartment-sized Bedroom Suite with sitting area. A second bedroom with four-poster bed and private bath (my grandchildren's favorite) is next to a small office. Both suites have private entrances to the main level and outdoors.

Guests have expressed delight in how warm and personal the home is, as contrasted with other places they have stayed which were, perhaps, more 'generic.' I take delight in sharing my personal space with travelers who appreciate my eclectic mix of furnishings, in the lovely setting Nature has provided.

About Barbara Jones

This picture was taken on the back deck last summer with my two grandchildren. I have visited Highlands every summer since 2007, and upon my retirement from the higher education field in 2012, I found the house of my dreams in a lovely neighborhood just 2 miles from Main Street.

I later learned that I had just bought the house that "Santa Claus had built." Well, at least the Santa Claus of Highlands for the past 40 years.

Barbara Jones purchased this house in 2012

Why Barbara Jones chose Highlands Hills

I had looked for just the right property for several years before discovering Twig and Nest. I was visiting a friend in the neighborhood when I discovered 93 Rolling Woods on a morning walk. The setting and views from inside out were nothing less than spectacular, and I liked the fact that the house was completely updated, backed up to a nature preserve, and was so convenient to both Highlands and Cashiers. Those who know me, know how much I love Christmas. I could hardly wait to get the biggest tree I could get in the doorway my first Christmas in the house, and have been adding trees ever since.

What makes this house unique

The hillside setting of the house affords lovely views from every direction. From the sofa, you can see the terraced gardens in the front and the woods and mountainside in the back. It's a great house for entertaining with over 800 feet of porches and decks. Around stone fireplace on the back porch is a favorite gathering spot.

The house is infused with light in the common areas. A row of windows in the kitchen open to the woods and mountainside. High ceilings with skylights and clerestory windows in the Great Room open to the covered deck with corresponding skylighted cathedral ceilings making the house feel light and airy and spacious.

Everyone who enters the house has the same response: 'Wow!' and then heads straight for the hammock.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"I just had to tell you what a magical time we had as guest in your Christmas home. Anna was enthralled by the Great Room fireplace. Putting the Christmas tree on the porch was genius. We enjoyed the lights and decorations without tracking needles across the house!

Everywhere we looked we found comfort and joy. Thank you for offering such a welcoming holiday haven."

A beautiful vacation home and visits to remember

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I have rented this home for week in July or August for 3 years to enjoy beautiful Highlands and the exceptional weather. It is so large and comfortable and the outdoor lounging and dining (where we have breakfast) is simply wonderful. The kitchen is good, beds comfortable, rooms large, dining room seats 8, Wifi works as does the TV, and one couldn't ask for more. The owner, Barbara, is very welcoming and next year we're going back for a month!

Owner's Response: So happy you had another good visit at Twig and Nest and it was about time we met! I appreciate your taking such good care of Twig and Nest and for helping me spread the word about our beautiful Highlands. Having such considerate and appreciative guests enjoy my home in the mountains makes all the effort to improve and maintain the property worthwhile. See you next year.

Beautiful. Decorated like a fairy tale for Christmas!

  • 5 of 5

We are very happy to have stayed at your home. It is a beautiful home with all the space we needed for a group of 8. The kitchen was stocked with all supplies necessary to prepare all type of Meals. The location is amazing as well. The magic of the decorations kept the Christmas spirit alive and made it that much more special.

Owner's Response: So happy you enjoyed Twig and Nest all dressed up for Christmas and that you had all the needed equipment and supplies in the kitchen to cook up your holiday feast. Please consider a trip during the summer as it is unseasonably cool in Highlands due to our 4100 foot-elevation. Thanks for taking time to write up your experience of the house during the holidays. Happy and Safe Travels back home, Barbara Jones Owner

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed Twig and Nest. As I mentioned on the website, this is the house that "Santa built." I have a lot to live up to. I am thankful you were not disappointed I couldn't put the tree up inside the house this year. When we cut it down, we didn't realize how fat it was. It would have taken up so much space in the Great Room I don't think you would have been as comfortable. Please consider a visit in the summer or fall as Highlands is especially beautiful and "cool" when it's hot everywhere else in the summer. Barbara Jones 1/3/18

Very comfortable home for our Thanksgiving getaway!

  • 4 of 5

My family thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Twig and Nest over Thanksgiving. This home feels like someone truly lives there full time. The kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed to prepare a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner for 8 without having to bring anything but the food. There was also someone nearby and available when we had any questions or issues.

Great place for a girls weekend

  • 5 of 5

This house was great for a girls' getaway in the mountains. The outside sitting area was perfect for us and is where we spent most of our time. We also enjoyed all the Halloween decor that had been put up. Even with a large group, we had plenty of room to all hang out together both in the living room and out on the porch! We had a great time and would definitely recommend this house for a vacation rental!

Owner's Response: Austill, so delighted that your Girls' Getaway was so enjoyable. And, that you liked the Halloween decorations. I had put those up for a prior family with children of various ages. They really enjoyed the "spooky" decor just as you did. It was a pleasure having you stay at my home in the mountains and thanks so much for taking such good care of it. I am always pleased when my guests feel comfortable and cared for. Barbara Jones, owner

A beautiful property in a beautiful setting.

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed in the Twig and Nest for approximately six days while attending my youngest son's wedding in Highlands. With us were my oldest son, his wife, and their three children~daughters aged 12, 3 1/2, and 17 months, and a nanny attendant for the little girls. It proved to be the ideal accommodations for the younger granddaughters giving them lots of space for play and to explore outdoors.

We warned them to be careful and watch for bears that might be in the area, and, indeed, on sort of a field trip to view the waterfalls in the area, with an aunt and uncle who were there for the wedding, they did get to see a mother bear with her two cubs.

We were extremely pleased with our stay at the Twig and Nest, and recommend it most highly. The owner, Barbara, even came in in advance of our arrival, and decorated for our granddaughters in a Halloween motif.

Owner's Response: David, I didn't realize that you had seen a mother bear and her cubs! The kids must have been so excited. I am so happy and grateful that you chose my home in Highlands for your son's wedding gathering spot. My only regret is that I didn't get the opportunity to meet and greet you personally, though my go-to-person and friend who helps me with the property did on the night the power went out in our neighborhood and he arrived on the scene with candles, lanterns, and flashlights to help the ladies finished getting dressed for the wedding! It touched me that the children were so captivated by the Halloween tree. So nice to have our efforts so enjoyed and appreciated. Barbara Jones
