Overview

About the property

5BR, 4 Ba with panoramic views, this spacious home affords every comfort.

"We were looking for a house spacious enough that we could all sit around the dining room table--Twig and Nest did not disappoint us. The house felt like a home that someone cared about."--

Kelly B-Signal Mountain, TN 5/20/16

"JOY"--the perfect word to describe our weekend. Your effort to make the house 'magazine ready' was appreciated by all. Thank you so much for sharing your winter wonderland with our mom's club. The perfect escape, and we all needed it." (12/13/15)

Mom's Club from Birmingham, AL

"Your house was exactly as you described it" (Nadia from Georgia, 03/12/16)

"'Everyone who came by remarked what a beautiful home it was and what a beautiful setting with all the trees. The wedding planner was so impressed, she is going to recommend it to all her brides.'" (J. Sandifer, Germantown, TN, 10/20/14).

"'We absolutely loved your home and plan on returning. We don't cook much any more, other than breakfast but your kitchen is so well equipped, we could turn out a grand repast,'" (U. Higgins, Aug. 2014).

These comments reflect the experiences of guests who have stayed at my mountain home in Highlands. Twig and Nest enjoys the best of both worlds: woodland beauty and privacy conveniently located just 5 minutes away from the charming town of Highlands, NC.

The spacious interior, with two-story Great Room (17' x 27') opening up to a skylit covered deck with stone fireplace and sunset views is designed for entertaining.

The custom designed Chef's kitchen with breakfast bar, center island, and butler's pantry has ample space for several cooks. Cosy private dining room can seat 8 people comfortably.

The house is tastefully furnished with an eclectic collection of antiques, art and memorabilia from my travels. Many nice touches add to the mountain ambience: cathedral ceilings with clerestory windows, antler chandelier, wide plank wood floors, outdoor fire pit, swings and hammocks, spa bathrooms, stone pathways, stacked stone wood-burning fireplaces, perennial gardens and custom woodwork. Televisions in both Master Suites, Great Room and Kitchen for your convenience and enjoyment. Covered parking for two cars and additional parking for 4 more vehicles.

The house can accommodate two families or groups comfortably. The main level contains a Master Bedroom suite on one side of the Gathering Room and two bedrooms and a bath on the other side. All bedrooms on the main level have woodland and/or garden views.

A few steps down from the main level is an apartment-sized Bedroom Suite with sitting area. A second bedroom with four-poster bed and private bath (my grandchildren's favorite) is next to a small office. Both suites have private entrances to the main level and outdoors.

Guests have expressed delight in how warm and personal the home is, as contrasted with other places they have stayed which were, perhaps, more 'generic.' I take delight in sharing my personal space with travelers who appreciate my eclectic mix of furnishings, in the lovely setting Nature has provided.

About Barbara Jones

This picture of me with my two grandchildren was taken at the Highlands Nature Center. Highlands is one of the few areas on the Eastern Continental Divide where it is cool enough in the summer to comfortably explore the outdoors. The town is right in the corridor of the "land of the waterfalls." Now that I am retired from my career in higher education, I can relax and enjoy having family and friends share my mountain getaway--Twig and Nest.

Barbara Jones purchased this house in 2012

Why Barbara Jones chose Highlands Hills

I had looked for just the right property for several years before discovering Twig and Nest. I was visiting a friend in the neighborhood when I discovered 93 Rolling Woods on a morning walk. The setting and views from inside out were nothing less than spectacular, and I liked the fact that the house was completely updated, backed up to a nature preserve, and was so convenient to both Highlands and Cashiers. Those who know me, know how much I love Christmas. I could hardly wait to get the biggest tree I could get in the doorway my first Christmas in the house, and have been adding trees ever since.

What makes this house unique

The hillside setting of the house affords lovely views from every direction. From the sofa, you can see the terraced gardens in the front and the woods and mountainside in the back. It's a great house for entertaining with over 800 feet of porches and decks. Around the stone fireplace on the back porch is a favorite gathering spot.

The house is infused with light in the common areas. A row of windows in the kitchen open to the woods and mountainside. High ceilings with skylights and clerestory windows in the Great Room open to the covered deck with corresponding skylighted cathedral ceilings making the house feel light and airy and spacious.

Everyone who enters the house has the same response: 'Wow!' and then heads straight for the hammock.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Thank you for the Twig and Nest for our summer vacation. Our family of 5 adults and 2 small children were most comfortable. We had a great time on the porch. Two notable restaurants were The Library and Canyon Kitchen at Lonesome Valley. Guys had great golf in the area and we rented a pontoon boat at Like Glenville. Great time"

A beautiful vacation home and visits to remember

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I have rented this home for week in July or August for 3 years to enjoy beautiful Highlands and the exceptional weather. It is so large and comfortable and the outdoor lounging and dining (where we have breakfast) is simply wonderful. The kitchen is good, beds comfortable, rooms large, dining room seats 8, Wifi works as does the TV, and one couldn't ask for more. The owner, Barbara, is very welcoming and next year we're going back for a month!

Owner's Response: So happy you had another good visit at Twig and Nest and it was about time we met! I appreciate your taking such good care of Twig and Nest and for helping me spread the word about our beautiful Highlands. Having such considerate and appreciative guests enjoy my home in the mountains makes all the effort to improve and maintain the property worthwhile. See you next year.

Once again--a perfect week in a perfect vacation home!

  • 5 of 5

There is something to be said about returning to the same place year after year. You don't have to look for the silverware, the wine glasses are where they are supposed to be, and the beds offer a good night's sleep after a day of travel or a long hike in the mountains. This is the perfect spot, the view from the so inviting and very comfortable

deck, to eat breakfast, read books, and relax after a day of shopping, museums, or music recitals in Brevard. We so look forward to coming here every summer, 5 in this house so far,and I can only recommend it eagerly and with the highest praise. Thank you,Barbara, for going out of your way to make us feel at home. We'll see you next year

Owner's Response: Julie, Thanks for 5-star rating and for taking time to write a such a genuine and complimentary review. It feels so nice to be appreciated for our efforts to keep our guests comfortable and happy. Glad you were able to make good use of the back porch and our chef's kitchen for your family meals (we noticed the extra leaf in the dining table). So many of my guests (particularly those attending weddings) do not get to relax on the covered back porch in front of the fireplace at all! Happy Trails, Barbara Jones, owner

Wonderful home in the mountains and still so close to the center of town

  • 4 of 5

House was fantastic and well appointed with kitchen supplies and everything our group needed. The outdoor deck area equipped with speakers was definitely the highlight of the entire house. When we were home we spent most of our time out there. Plenty of room for all 6 adults and kids to move about and not feel on top of one another. Basement area was a little musty smelling but probably due only to more humid than normal summer conditions. Even so, the weather was gorgeous in July with temps dropping into the 60s at night and only high 70s-low 80s during the day. Barbara was extremely helpful upon arrival and even provided a few of her favorite Highlands spots. Overall, this was a great spot for our group.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for taking time to write up such a complimentary review of Twig and Nest. Glad you enjoyed the back deck and that I was able to find a Pack-and-Play before your arrival (the last one on the shelf, I might add). And, thanks for leaving some of the kindling you purchased. You were good sports about all the rain last week and seemed to make the most of the situation. We have been in a drought for the past four years and, although we want all our visitors to be able to explore Highlands in plenty of sunshine, our water tables are really low and we are grateful for the rain. Thanks for the heads up about the lower level. Will open some windows for next group so the fresh air can circulate around some. Please come back again soon!

Perfect Mountain Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely love this house! The 5 bedrooms are spaced out throughout the house so everyone gets plenty of privacy and the downstairs master is awesome. The location is ideal. Just a few minutes outside of downtown Highlands, yet you feel like you're miles away from anyone else. Easy drive to Cashiers, the falls and many other attractions. The owner provides plenty of recommendations for restaurants, shops and attractions; more than enough to keep you busy for a week. The crown jewel is the outdoor fireplace on the spacious covered deck. We found ourselves relaxing by the fire every night. Perfect for those cool mountain evening temps. We will be renting this house again in the future!

Wonderful, relaxing getaway

  • 5 of 5

The house is wonderful, and the porch is even better! I wish we could’ve stayed out there all weekend. The landscaping also adds to the mountain charm. Can’t recommend highly enough!

Owner's Response: Kate, so glad you enjoyed staying at Twig and Nest and appreciate your taking the time to sign the guest book and to write this review. I get so many compliments on my back porch that I am almost tempted to rename the property "The Back Porch." It is gratifying to hear from my guests about how much they enjoyed their stay here and that they only wish they had had more time to spend on the porch. We all need more time on back porches surrounded by natural beauty provided by Mother Nature! Namaste, Barbara Jones, owner
