About the property

5BR, 4 Ba with panoramic views, this spacious home affords every comfort.

"We were looking for a house spacious enough that we could all sit around the dining room table--Twig and Nest did not disappoint us. The house felt like a home that someone cared about."--

Kelly B-Signal Mountain, TN 5/20/16

"JOY"--the perfect word to describe our weekend. Your effort to make the house 'magazine ready' was appreciated by all. Thank you so much for sharing your winter wonderland with our mom's club. The perfect escape, and we all needed it." (12/13/15)

Mom's Club from Birmingham, AL

"Your house was exactly as you described it" (Nadia from Georgia, 03/12/16)

"'Everyone who came by remarked what a beautiful home it was and what a beautiful setting with all the trees. The wedding planner was so impressed, she is going to recommend it to all her brides.'" (J. Sandifer, Germantown, TN, 10/20/14).

"'We absolutely loved your home and plan on returning. We don't cook much any more, other than breakfast but your kitchen is so well equipped, we could turn out a grand repast,'" (U. Higgins, Aug. 2014).

These comments reflect the experiences of guests who have stayed at my mountain home in Highlands. Twig and Nest enjoys the best of both worlds: woodland beauty and privacy conveniently located just minutes away from the charming town of Highlands, NC.

The spacious interior, with two-story Great Room (17' x 27') opening up to a skylit covered deck with stone fireplace and sunset views is designed for entertaining.

The custom designed Chef's kitchen with breakfast bar, center island, and butler's pantry has ample space for several cooks. Cosy private dining room can seat 8 people comfortably.

The house is tastefully furnished with an eclectic collection of antiques, art and memorabilia from my travels. Many nice touches add to the mountain ambience: cathedral ceilings with clerestory windows, antler chandelier, wide plank wood floors, outdoor fire pit, swings and hammocks, spa bathrooms, stone pathways, stacked stone wood-burning fireplaces, perennial gardens and custom woodwork. Televisions in both Master Suites, Great Room and Kitchen for your convenience and enjoyment. Covered parking for two cars and additional parking for 4 more vehicles.

The house can accommodate two families or groups comfortably. The main level contains a Master Bedroom suite on one side of the Gathering Room and two bedrooms and a bath on the other side. All bedrooms on the main level have woodland and/or garden views.

A few steps down from the main level is an apartment-sized Bedroom Suite with sitting area. A second bedroom with four-poster bed and private bath (my grandchildren's favorite) is next to a small office. Both suites have private entrances to the main level and outdoors.

Guests have expressed delight in how warm and personal the home is, as contrasted with other places they have stayed which were, perhaps, more 'generic.' I take delight in sharing my personal space with travelers who appreciate my eclectic mix of furnishings, in the lovely setting Nature has provided.

About Barbara Jones

This picture was taken on the back deck last summer with my two grandchildren. I have visited Highlands every summer since 2007, and upon my retirement from the higher education field in 2012, I found the house of my dreams in a lovely neighborhood just 2 miles from Main Street.

I later learned that I had just bought the house that "Santa Claus had built." Well, at least the Santa Claus of Highlands for the past 40 years.

Barbara Jones purchased this house in 2012

Why Barbara Jones chose Highlands

I had looked for just the right property for several years before discovering Twig and Nest. I was visiting a friend in the neighborhood when I discovered 93 Rolling Woods on a morning walk. The setting and views from inside out were nothing less than spectacular, and I liked the fact that the house was completely updated, backed up to a nature preserve, and was so convenient to both Highlands and Cashiers. Those who know me, know how much I love Christmas. I could hardly wait to get the biggest tree I could get in the doorway my first Christmas in the house, and have been adding trees ever since.

What makes this house unique

The hillside setting of the house affords lovely views from every direction. From the sofa, you can see the terraced gardens in the front and the woods and mountainside in the back. It's a great house for entertaining with over 800 feet of porches and decks. Around stone fireplace on the back porch is a favorite gathering spot.

The house is infused with light in the common areas. A row of windows in the kitchen open to the woods and mountainside. High ceilings with skylights and clerestory windows in the Great Room open to the covered deck with corresponding skylighted cathedral ceilings making the house feel light and airy and spacious.

Everyone who enters the house has the same response: 'Wow!' and then heads straight for the hammock.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"What a wonderful time we had in your beautifully appointed mountain home. Everything was very organized and the the porch--we all wanted to go back to B'ham and build one! Hope to come back again soon. Thank you."

Such a wonderful home!

  • 5 of 5

My family (all siblings and respective spouses for a total of eight people) recently stayed for a three day weekend at Twig and Nest. We chose this house because it seemed spacious enough for a large group, and it did not disappoint us. There was plenty of seating for all around the dining table, in the great room and outside on the covered deck, which was our favorite spot with a fire going in the stone fireplace. The house was nicely decorated (and so well stocked with supplies) and felt like a home that someone really cared about. The owner, Barbara, was so gracious and attentive to following up with us and making sure all was well.

We plan on returning next year to Twig and Nest!

Perfect place for the family stay on our son's wedding weekend

  • 5 of 5

Twig and Nest was the perfect accommodation for us. it was my wife and I, My daughter, her husband and 3 children, my other daughter and her husband, and my son who was the "groom to be" stayed with us for a few nights also. The setting was beautiful in the mountain forest.

The house was well stocked to meet all our needs. Being close the Highlands and Cashere it was easy access to groceries and supplies we needed. Thoroughly enjoyed the stay

Owner's Response: So happy the weather cleared for your son's wedding. And, grateful that you enjoyed staying at Twig and Nest. Having such appreciative and thoughtful guests makes all the effort to make Twig and Nest welcoming and special worthwhile. I know it's a long way from Wisconsin, but I sure hope you will visit us in Highlands in the not so distant future. May all your pains be "champagnes!" Barbara

Just what we were looking for!

  • 5 of 5

Thank you so very much, Barbara, for sharing your wonderful home with my family! You were so easy to work with, the location was just what we were looking for, we had plenty of room for everyone to have their own bedroom space (much needed with a group), the kitchen was well equipped with all we needed, but the favorite place for the grandchildren (teens) was the porch. With the weather being unseasonably warm over President's Day Weekend, they hung out there a LOT if we were at the house. My 14 year old grandson has suggested we do the same trip again next year! We look forward to another visit.

Owner's Response: Sharon, so happy you had a good time at Twig and Nest. Everyone seems to love being on the back porch, and you were fortunate to be able to enjoy it at this time of year. Please do come again next year. You and your family bring great energy to my mountain home.

Owner's Response: Mead, I so wish I could have been in Highlands the weekend you and your family stayed at Twig and Nest. Your father was one of the most enthusiastic guests that has ever stayed there. He told me that it didn't matter which room you were in or which direction you looked, there was something beautiful, interesting or whimsical to look at. When he booked my house for the visit, he said he had read the many favorable reviews of the property, and seen the pictures, but he really didn't expect the house to live up to his high expectations. Then, when he came into the house, he was truly amazed that the house actually exceeded his expectations! I told him I think it's because of all the positive energy that the guests bring to the house. I'd say the "Boley" energy has really given T&N a boost!---

Wonderful Place To Stay!

  • 5 of 5

My two oldest children and their spouses and four grandchildren (ages 4, 2, 8 months and 7 weeks) rented Twig and Nest for New Years, and it was truly magical! Love spending time with my children and grandchildren and Barbara's beautiful home in Highlands offered everything we needed and would want in a rental home! Plenty of bedrooms so that families have their own space. She is definitely a "cook at heart" because there is absolutely NOTHING lacking in the kitchen and we ate in most nights because of the small children! Decorated beautifully for the holiday season, the house was enviting, casually elegant -- with the most gorgeous outside fireplace and seating area! We made a lot of samores over the fire! Twig and Nest is only 2.5 miles from Highlands so it's very easy to get into town and there are two grocery stores there and many shoppes, etc. It was my first time to Highlands, and I look forward to many more family and friends trips there --- at Twig and Nest~ I couldn't have imagined a nicer home to spend the holidays with my children! Thank you!

PS. You know you've stayed at an amazing place when you post photos to FB and 6 of your friends ask know where you stayed!

Owner's Response: Elizabeth, thank you so much for choosing Twig and Nest for your New Year celebration. You just missed our first snowfall in Highlands by a few days. We had six inches last Friday, and it truly was magical. I built a snowman on the back deck, and hope he lasts the rest of the week, when my next family arrives. Glad you found my home inviting, comfortable and convenient to downtown Highlands--and, thank you for taking such good care of the house and its furnishings--no small feat with four little ones. Countless blessings in 2017, Barbara
