These comments reflect the experiences of guests who have stayed at my mountain home in Highlands. Twig and Nest enjoys the best of both worlds: woodland beauty and privacy conveniently located just minutes away from the charming town of Highlands, NC.

The spacious interior, with two-story Great Room (17' x 27') opening up to a skylit covered deck with stone fireplace and sunset views is designed for entertaining.

The custom designed Chef's kitchen with breakfast bar, center island, and butler's pantry has ample space for several cooks. Cosy private dining room can seat 8 people comfortably.

The house is tastefully furnished with an eclectic collection of antiques, art and memorabilia from my travels. Many nice touches add to the mountain ambience: cathedral ceilings with clerestory windows, antler chandelier, wide plank wood floors, outdoor fire pit, swings and hammocks, spa bathrooms, stone pathways, stacked stone wood-burning fireplaces, perennial gardens and custom woodwork. Televisions in both Master Suites, Great Room and Kitchen for your convenience and enjoyment. Covered parking for two cars and additional parking for 4 more vehicles.

The house can accommodate two families or groups comfortably. The main level contains a Master Bedroom suite on one side of the Gathering Room and two bedrooms and a bath on the other side. All bedrooms on the main level have woodland and/or garden views.

A few steps down from the main level is an apartment-sized Bedroom Suite with sitting area. A second bedroom with four-poster bed and private bath (my grandchildren's favorite) is next to a small office. Both suites have private entrances to the main level and outdoors.

Guests have expressed delight in how warm and personal the home is, as contrasted with other places they have stayed which were, perhaps, more 'generic.' I take delight in sharing my personal space with travelers who appreciate my eclectic mix of furnishings, in the lovely setting Nature has provided.

About Barbara Jones

This picture was taken on the back deck last summer with my two grandchildren. I have visited Highlands every summer since 2007, and upon my retirement from the higher education field in 2012, I found the house of my dreams in a lovely neighborhood just 2 miles from Main Street.

I later learned that I had just bought the house that "Santa Claus had built." Well, at least the Santa Claus of Highlands for the past 40 years.

Why Barbara Jones chose Highlands

I had looked for just the right property for several years before discovering Twig and Nest. I was visiting a friend in the neighborhood when I discovered 93 Rolling Woods on a morning walk. The setting and views from inside out were nothing less than spectacular, and I liked the fact that the house was completely updated, backed up to a nature preserve, and was so convenient to both Highlands and Cashiers. Those who know me, know how much I love Christmas. I could hardly wait to get the biggest tree I could get in the doorway my first Christmas in the house, and have been adding trees ever since.

What makes this house unique

The hillside setting of the house affords lovely views from every direction. From the sofa, you can see the terraced gardens in the front and the woods and mountainside in the back. It's a great house for entertaining with over 800 feet of porches and decks. Around stone fireplace on the back porch is a favorite gathering spot.

The house is infused with light in the common areas. A row of windows in the kitchen open to the woods and mountainside. High ceilings with skylights and clerestory windows in the Great Room open to the covered deck with corresponding skylighted cathedral ceilings making the house feel light and airy and spacious.

Everyone who enters the house has the same response: 'Wow!' and then heads straight for the hammock.

A beautiful vacation home and visits to remember

My friends and I have rented this home for week in July or August for 3 years to enjoy beautiful Highlands and the exceptional weather. It is so large and comfortable and the outdoor lounging and dining (where we have breakfast) is simply wonderful. The kitchen is good, beds comfortable, rooms large, dining room seats 8, Wifi works as does the TV, and one couldn't ask for more. The owner, Barbara, is very welcoming and next year we're going back for a month!

The Highlands Best

We had a great three days and the home was wonderful! The kitchen had everything a cook could want! The seven of us were very comfortable and could not have been happier! Enjoyed the back porch! We will be back! Thank you for sharing with us!

About a third of my guests are comprised of wedding parties--the close proximity to downtown Highlands, the spacious entertaining areas, and large-well-equipped kitchen seem to be the most appreciated characteristics of Twig and Nest. The covered porch with fireplace is a comfortable and spacious place to relax--in fact, as one of the most appreciated features of the house, I am considering renaming the house to "The Back Porch." Glad you made it home before Hurricane Irma hit South Carolina. Come again when you can stay longer and just enjoy Highlands. Barbara Jones Owner

I hear of so many people who arrive at rentals who are disappointed in the actual property once they enter. I have been told that my kitchen is second to none in that it has just about every appliance one could wish for and two of many. It's nice to have my efforts to keep the property in tip top shape and decorate for the seasons appreciated. We Will Return

This property was exactly what our group needed. The photos on the website acurately depicticted what the house is like. It was clean, comfortable, well stocked, beautifully decorated and convenient to Highlands. We decided to fix all of our meals there and found that was so relaxing. No wait time at restaurants etc. and the outdoor room was fabulous for us considering the rain we had the weekend we were there. We enjoyed the fireplace as well because even in summer, mountain nights are cool. We are looking forward to getting to be guests at Twig and Nest again. Also, our owner/host was great to work with so all things considered, WE LOVED IT ALL.

Beautiful home in a tranquil setting

The minute you walk in the Twig and a nest, you feel at home. The layout is great and the decor ties together the inside space with the setting outside. There was ample sleeping and living space for our large group (10). The kitchen was well stocked with whatever we needed. The kids had a blast playing in the forest behind the house and we even had a camp fire one night and roasted marshmellows! Finally, the location was great, not far from town and close to many of the exciting adventures that the area has to offer.

Beautiful home

The back porch was wonderful for our group. We enjoyed breakfast, lunch & dinner out there. The home was very cozy & warm & perfect in every way! I would only recommend to purchase stronger trash bags for the garbage cans. We had a problem with them tearing. Everything was great with the house.

Cleaning Fee $225
Damage Deposit $500

Book directly with owner to save booking fee. Clients may choose to purchase damage insurance or pay a refundable damage deposit of $500.00. Special event groups (such as weddings) may be required to add damage insurance. Damage deposit will be refunded within two weeks of date of departure, providing that there is no damage to the property or its contents during your stay. 100% refund of all deposits for cancellations 60 days or more before expected date of arrival with the exception of the VRBO booking fee, which goes to VRBO, and is non-refundable if the client cancels the reservation. Cancellations made within 30 days of date of arrival will receive a 50% refund of rental amount + taxes, and 100% of cleaning fee and damage deposit. Owner will make every effort to accommodate cancellations due to illness or other family emergency, including rain-checks for a future rental.
