Once part of the famous Parker Ranch, the green, rolling pastures of 62-acre Rainbow Ranch is the setting for this new three-bedroom, two-bath home. One of only nine houses in the community of West Waikoekoe, the property extends to the rim of Waipio Valley, the boyhood home of King Kamehameha I and a place of unsurpassed splendor. All views from the home are lush and green, with the ocean beyond and majestic Mauna Kea behind. The area still has the paniolo (cowboy country) ambiance with horses, cattle and sheep roaming the pastures nearby. Peaceful and quiet, only the sounds of nature punctuate the silence. Clear nights provide stunning stargazing. Hike or walk right from your doorstep, rent bikes or ride horseback from nearby facilities.
With all this beauty and privacy you are still only a 10-minute drive to the town of Waimea/Kamuela for shopping and dining. A drive east takes you to the charming old sugar-plantation town of Honokaa, along the spectacular Hamakua Coast to historic Hilo and on to Volcano National Park, where Kilauea has been flowing for 30 years.
Drive west a half hour to Kohala Coast beaches, including Hapuna Beach State Park, consistently ranked on international Top Ten lists. Continue on to Kailua-Kona for shopping, dining and nightlife.
The home itself is built for comfort and enjoyment of the locale—which includes rainfall and cool temperatures—with a deluxe Marquis hot tub for therapeutic relaxation on the large wrap-around covered lanai (patio) plus both indoor and outdoor fireplaces. The custom kitchen serves all areas with ease, and the barbecue area takes advantage of the amazing views and brilliant night sky.
The dining table seats six with four barstools at the unique, custom glass-covered “beach-in-a-box” counter for breakfast or overflow. Comfortable seating makes the most of flat-screen TV with DISH, DVD player and WIFI.
The master bedroom features a king-size bed, with a queen in the second bedroom and twin beds in the third to sleep six comfortably. Two full bathrooms complete the accommodations, along with beach chairs and mats, towels, and boogie boards.
Owner lives next door on the adjacent 28 acres and will provide fresh ranch eggs (from Rainbow Ranch), fruit, tea and Kona coffee for your first breakfast, as well as help planning day trips.
My name is Heidi Clayton, this is my dog Bert in the picture with me.
I grew up in Santa Barbara, California. My family was in the restaurant business there.
I attended Prescott College in Arizona majoring in Outdoor Education.
I've worked as a veterinarian technician and love animals.
Since 1990 I have been a certified PATH Therapeutic Riding Instructor teaching people with special needs to ride horses.
I moved to the incredible Big Island of Hawaii in 2001.
After buying land, in the gorgeous community of West Waikoekoe, I started developing Rainbow Ranch. We raise, horses, cattle, sheep, chickens and have a huge koi pond.
I am looking forward to sharing this beautiful and special place with others.
Heidi E Clayton purchased this house in 2001
The new home, I just completed in 2014, was built with care and consideration to detail for making it comfortable, warm and hospitable.
It is a lovely home in a spectacular setting.
Sometimes it looks like you are driving into a painting with views of Waipio Valley, waterfalls, Mauna Kea, green rolling hills, forests and views of Maui in the distance.
We are off grid. The electricity for the home is solar power and we use catchment from our wonderful rain water. The photovoltaic system is top of the line and works exceptionally well. It will run anything that is needed for your comfort, including a brand new hot tub. The catchment water goes through filters and a purifying system.
Private and peaceful but also modern and comfortable.
I love the plantation style home with a large wrap around lanai so you can relax outside and enjoy the gorgeous views and nature all around.
The home is charming with an indoor and outdoor appeal.
My family visited here over the Thanksgiving weekend. The property was perfect for us and contributed to the making of many great memories. We live on Oahu and wanted to come spend Thanksgiving in a quiet out-of-the-way place in the country. This location is definitely secluded, quiet and peaceful.
The house is very comfortable and spacious with all the amenities and more! We spent a lot of time in the evenings alternating between the firepit and the hot tub. We cooked a full-course Thanksgiving meal in the kitchen which is fully stocked with implements.
Waimea is a beautiful small town with excellent restaurants and nice farmers' markets for local produce.
Thanks Heidi for your hospitality!
If you're looking for rest, seclusion, quiet, peace, and landscape bursting with serene natural beauty, AWAY from the popular tourist spots, this is your place! Our family of four, including two teenagers, lives on crowded, busy Oahu. We wanted (& needed) a Fall Break consisting of these characteristics to help us reconnect. Heidi's Hale provided these traits and so much more! The house itself is very well made. We found it to be clean, spacious, comfortable, quiet, and well-equipped for everything we needed for our five-day stay. The hot tub is the nicest one we've been in, and was a perfect way to end each day. The wrap-around lanai is perfect for reading, sipping coffee in the morning, quiet conversation, watching the cows across the way, or just taking in the surrounding countryside and passing clouds.
The unexpected added bonus of this rental is Heidi herself. She is an incredibly helpful, generous, and all-around beautiful soul. On our first day, she introduced us to her family of animals ranging from gentle and welcoming dogs, curious and friendly horses, a brood of chickens and adopted donkey:) The weather was wetter than usual at the time of our visit. Hearing that we would enjoy exploring the acreage quite a bit, she thoughtfully loaned me a pair of her boots, then directed us to Ace Hardware in Waimea Town, where the remaining three could purchase a pair of "Waimea Slippers" (thick rubber boots) for only $23/person. Every morning, our 14 y/o son donned his boots, jacket, guitar, and headed out to serenade Heidi's sheep or three pet:) horses, which grazed in view daily. We all thoroughly enjoyed locating, then feeding the horses whenever we wished! Heidi suggested treats for them, which we purchased, then later provided apple bananas for us to feed them, ALONG with bananas and a beautiful bunch of organic kale and swiss chard from her garden for us to eat! Additionally, she freely offered us her time and assistance throughout the week with various needs and questions we had, including restaurant suggestions (we're vegan) and areas of interest. Our wonderful hostess, the surrounding pastureland, rolling hills, gentle animals, trees, birds, breezes and view of Mauna Kea, plus the cooler weather the higher elevation affords, all combine to make this unique country-Hawaii property a real GEM. We hope to return someday! Mahalo nui loa, Heidi, for a most memorable week in a most special place. Aloha a hui hou from our ohana to yours!
Our family of five stayed there for three weeks between June and July. To sum it all up: Perfect! Everything was as it was said in the description, and better. Heidi was wonderfull, and allways there to help if we needed anything.. I can recommend this to anyone looking for peace and quiet. Looking forward to going back some day...
Your home in Waimea was more than we hoped for! We enjoyed our stay and loved the privacy of being off the grid yet only minutes away from Waimea town. Our first day we were welcomed by turkeys and woke up to curious sheep out in the pastures. It was quiet and serene and your home was perfect! Thank you for checking on us to make sure we had everything we needed. That meant a lot to us having a warm friendly voice welcoming us to the Big Island! Thank you Heidi! A hui hou! Mahalo, Roni
We enjoyed staying in both houses very much & we had some of fondest memories of our lives. Both homes are very beautiful, located wonderful settings & accommodating. I would highly recommend Hawaii travelers to go through VRBO to find a great home & really enjoy your vacation. Don't just go to a resort / hotel & limit your vacation fun. Jeff Morgan
The cooler high-elevation air, beautifully furnished home, surrounding hiking trails, and immersion into mountain country was an incredible experience, and a welcome transition from our time on the coast of the Big Island. Thank you Heidi. You truly created remarkable memories for us.
This property is secluded but only 10 minutes to the town of Waimea/Kamuela with many restaurants, shops and amenities.
