Overview

About the property

3 Bedrooms, 3.5 Bathrooms, Sleeps 6

Nestled in the trees overlooking stately mountain views, we are pleased to present a very special property - affectionately known as “Journey’s End.” A charming, private and exquisitely-furnished lodge located about two miles from downtown Highlands, this gracious property is uniquely situated in the lovely “Falling Waters” community – where nine upscale homes share this fifty acre, peaceful place – all accompanied by an abundance of majestic trees and varied wildlife. Our private development includes a stone gateway, free-flowing clear water streams, two waterfalls, and immense tranquility as you continue on to this enchanted retreat.

Extremely private, yet not too secluded, Journey's End is a welcoming place. Upon entrance to the home the Grand Room, Gallery, Gathering Room, Master Bedroom and spacious back deck provide panoramic views of the mountainous terrain. The adjacent, well-appointed kitchen provides all of the amenities that support gourmet cooking. The common areas encourage great entertaining, whether for couples who wish to just escape from it all in a romantic setting to a family gathering suitable for both adults and children. Supremely distinctive when compared to other properties, there are three independently-placed master suites, each with their own well-appointed king-size bed and private bath. All three are unique, each sumptuous and splendid in appeal.

As evidenced in the photo’s, Journey's End is furnished in an interesting African theme - where the original animal pen/inks share this grand place with authentic African wood carvings, a variety of eclectic art glass and other gracious design elements evocative of a true mountain lodge – such as soaring timber-framed ceilings, natural woodwork, and glorious western-facing mountain views that embrace the setting sun. As we enjoy wildlife in all of its' splendor, we harbor no stuffed animals or endangered skins here! The Gathering Room is appointed with three full-size sofa’s that enable viewing of a very large 55' wide-screen flat television, perfect for sporting or other entertainment and accompanying gleeful repartee. Or, let the kids simply enjoy the other 60' wide-screen located in the large Loft - perfect for movies. Also provided is wireless internet access, continental-US long distance telephone service, as well as a high-fidelity stereo system for your music enjoyment. The back deck creates an entertainment area for all guests to share in nature's glory, while the large natural charcoal grill w/smoker can also be used for that long-awaited repast – served at the Grand Room dining table for eight, or the sturdy outdoor picnic table that easily seats twelve.

Care for an adventure? Visit our local NC waterfalls: Glen Falls (difficult descent!), Bridal Veil Falls (drive under!), Dry Falls (amazing walk under!), Bust-Your-Butt Falls (a place for kids to cool off, yet can be turbulent and dangerous after rainstorms!), and the magnificent Cullasaja Gorge Falls (absolutely inspiring!); go for a hike along many outdoor trails that surround Highlands - Whiteside Mountain is a must; visit the Highlands Nature Center; drive through the vintage covered wooden bridge at The Bascom art center and enjoy their varied exhibits; swim in the new Jr. Olympic-size pool (now open year-round!), play tennis or shoot hoops at the Highlands Recreation Center; enjoy the varied opportunities for food lovers! Try a day trip to Cherokee, NC, home of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (a tribal sovereign nation that functions under the laws of the Federal Government), to experience the true culture of our native friends. To be sure, there is much to do and see nearby!

Browse and shop to your heart's content in downtown Highlands! Our shopping experience is oriented to both the resourceful and the opulent; from hiking shoes to antiques, t-shirts to leather handbags, artwork to furniture, we have it all in Highlands! Our many eating establishments provide for great, modest-priced meals: from ice cream cones and sandwiches to those who seek the unique, gastronomical delight of several five-star restaurants. Consider also embarking on a short drive to Cashiers for more shopping, Glenville for a glorious lake view (swimming, boating and picnics), or just enjoy a refreshing stroll in our very own Falling Waters neighborhood – perhaps to include a picnic down by the modest streams and beautiful waterfall, or a quiet walkabout through the attractive development. To be sure, you won’t be disappointed!

Let there be no doubt that “Journey’s End” is a place to call home, a well-appointed lodge to enjoy and a welcoming respite from the busy urban life! We welcome you, esteemed guests, to our Highlands mountain paradise!

Notes:

1) We can accommodate less than a 3-night stay, but at a higher rate than the quoted nightly rate due to pro-rated laundry costs, etc. Please inquire with the owner.

2) The property sleeps 6 (2 each in king size beds), but there is ample room for more - on sofa's, sleeping bags on the floor, or even consider bringing sleeping bags and a pup tent for the kids to be placed on the back deck!

3) We offer air conditioning throughout the entire home, unlike many mountain homes in the area. Although the mountain elevation offers cooler summer temperatures, we also experience relatively high humidity - thus, a/c provides both temperature and humidity control.

4) Small well-behaved dog considered, but requires prior approval by the owner. If approved, the Pet Fee offsets the cost related to carpet cleaning and removal of pet dander.

Why Bruce E. Kibler chose Smoky Mountains

The photo's tell it all: Clean, spacious and quiet accommodations provide for a unique experience in a very private setting. Whether securing Journey's End as a romantic getaway for two, a retreat for friends and family, or a respite for several adults to simply relax from the hustle and bustle of humanity, Journey's End is a welcoming environment that offers great entertainment possibilities and that often elusive romantic setting.

What makes this lodge unique

A mountain lodge filled with charm and character; spacious and evocative, simply a magnificent property to use as a base camp while exploring the seemingly endless opportunities in and around the western North Carolina mountains. We are nestled in the trees with a beautiful, western-facing mountain view. Due to our elevation at 4,100 ft. above sea level, mosquito's are virtually non-existent - and quiet solitude is assured because we have no nearby neighbors. Conveniently located (downtown Highlands is just 2-1/2 miles away!) and surrounded by abundant foliage, our clean, spacious and comfortable accommodations are the perfect setting to ensure that Journey's End will be long remembered as a delightful vacation destination!

Pure Bliss!!!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at Journey's End. The accommodations were superb and the location was perfect. Bruce was an excellent host and provided us with recommended lists of restaurants as well as attractions in the area. We appreciated all the treats included in the welcome basket along with the two bottles of wine in the refrigerator. The house was spectacular and immaculate. It was always so nice to come back to Journey's End after a long day of touring the local area. The trees provided a wonderful backdrop to a very serene setting. We enjoyed having a glass of wine with cheese and crackers on the deck at sunset. Pure bliss!

A perfect private retreat

  • 5 of 5

We could not have asked for a better family get-away than the one we had at Journey's End! This house was perfect for the six of us (three couples). Bruce--thank you for all you did to make us feel at home right away in this beautiful house. We were greeted with wine and a yummy basket of treats. Bruce leaves a binder of invaluable information about the house and anything to do in the area. He was easy to reach by phone if we needed anything! There was inviting music playing for us when we arrived and the house was so clean and fresh. We cooked most of our meals at the house, and it was so wonderful to have a fully stocked and organized kitchen to enjoy. The bedrooms are all unique and private as well. The décor is also interesting--safari meets log cabin. There is great animal art work and glass sculptures that we all enjoyed. We plan to return!

Journey Inn

This is the place to stay. We had 3 couples in the house and had so much room. Bruce is great he left us wine a basket full of stuff to eat and in the bedrooms a box of cookies. I have never stayed at a place that left you things like this. I will be going back. Thank you Bruce

Glorious Home away from Home

  • 5 of 5

Our recent stay at Journey's End exceeded our highest expectations. Owner, Bruce Kibler, did everything possible to make sure that we enjoyed our stay. Not only was the cabin beautifully decorated and impeccably clean, but when we arrived a wonderful scent filled the air and soft, beautiful music played in the background. Additionally, we were greeted with two great bottles of wine and a delicious basket of treats, ranging from pistachios to cheese to chocolates, among other munchies. On the kitchen counter were muffin mixes in the event we wished to bake during our stay. Although we arrived with many of our own supplies, you need not leave home with anything other than your clothes and special sundries, as Bruce made sure the cabin was supplied with everything necessary to make his guests feel right at home. The chef's kitchen was stocked with everything one would need to readily cook a gourmet meal! The bedrooms and beds are spacious and ever so comfortable! Bruce's attention to detail was evident when on Day 2 of our 7-day stay we were unable to turn on the gas fireplace in the living room. I called Bruce and he immediately responded and had someone out there from the gas company. It turned out the pilot light had some soot in it, which once removed allowed the fireplace to operate again without further problems. What was most impressive was Bruce's immediate response to the matter (even when we told him the cabin was heated throughout, so the fireplace was not necessary other than for the added attraction of seeing the fire burning on a cool night). In addition to such excellent service, our last night there had approximately 1-3 inches of snow forecasted. Bruce immediately called us and told us about the weather situation in order to assure our comfort and safety. As we were expected to depart the following morning, he told us we could stay until the following afternoon around 2:00 pm, in order to assure that any snow or ice on the road would have properly melted by the time we drove away. Again, his actions and concerns for our overall well-being was most impressive. Additionally, and as if that were not enough, he also made sure to inform us of the best things to do in town and the best days (weather wise) to do them. He was accurate each time and we were able to take advantage of the weather each day to enjoy the most out of our trip! I highly recommend Journey's End , and will undoubtedly return in the Fall!

Owner's Response: Owners Note: VRBO is having problems getting the entire contents of this prior Guest review posted properly in the system. Despite repeated attempts by the Owner to resolve the issue, so far VRBO can't seem to resolve their error. The Guest (Jane M.) wrote: "I chose Journey's End for a long weekend getaway with my 2 adult children and their spouses and my 2 grandchildren. The decision was based on the beautiful pictures online, the 3 king-size master suites, the spacious of the home and the proximity to The Highlands and it EXCEEDED our expectations. Thank you Bruce! There was also a book with information and directions to nearby sightseeing/hiking opportunities, shopping, etc. The kitchen was nicely appointed with high-end cookware, appliances, knives and dishes which made preparing our evening meals fun and enjoyable. The attention to detail in the artwork, the luxury linens and towels and the decor was fantastic. The sunset view from the back deck as well as the dining room was amazing! We are certainly looking forward to our next trip to The Highlands and Journey's End! Thank you Bruce for such a memorable trip experience!" Thank you Jane, for such sweet sentimental thoughts. Looking forward to your return, and I wish you blessed travels as you embark upon the future adventure's in your life!

Fabulous mountain home

  • 5 of 5

We just wrapped up a wonderful long weekend at this home in Highlands, and it was a terrific experience. The home itself is lovely... beautifully decorated and equipped (including a yummy basket of snacks waiting for us). The location is great--close to hiking, shopping, and restaurants. And special kudos to the owner! We got about 4 inches of snow while were there, and Bruce was in continuous contact, making sure we were safe and up to date on the latest weather information. He also worked with the property manager to be sure would be able to drive in and out easily. We appreciated his concern...and his help. The silver lining to the bad weather was that the snow made the house and surrounding area incredibly beautiful, and we were snug, warm, and happy inside. We now want to return... in the summer.
