Whale season on the Big Island is between November and May. Humpback whales spend their winter months in the waters around the Hawaiian islands giving visitors and locals alike a chance to see these majestic animals in their natural habitat.
People call it the Blue Lagoon home. The official Hawaiian name for the home is "Hale 'Olu Olu", "The home of relaxation and comfort" which was recently given the name by Kahu Danny Akaka after a traditional Hawaiian house blessing was done for the home. The home is considered a great Hawaii beach house with nice Hawaiian decor. Park the car and walk to the beach. It’s a 5 minute walk to White Sands Beach (aka, Magic Sands Beach) and a 10 minute walk to Kahalu’u Beach Park, one of Kona’s premier snorkeling spots.
The Hale 'Olu Olu is a private home nestled in the quiet community of White Sands Estates. The home is built to feel as if you’re sleeping in the open tropical air and trees with detailed Hawaiian features throughout the home. The location is great for both the active person or just to sit and relax. After a day at the beach enjoy the sunset view from the Lanai and the living room or wash off the sand and jump in the private blue lagoon like salt water pool.
This family friendly Hawaiian beach house is a great hub for birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, wedding get together and don't forget the annual Ironman world championship.
The property is dotted with palms, fruit and plumeria trees. The home sits in a friendly and normally quiet cul-de-sac in a friendly Kona neighborhood.
The Hale 'Olu Olu is a large two story home. All bedrooms have its own private bath and entryway along with a private lanai. All the downstairs rooms have an upgraded feature of a wet bar for added convenience. The home has a separate stand-alone unit for additional privacy. Hale 'Olu Olu is great for birthdays, anniversaries and wedding get together's.
*Upstairs: Master bedroom with a queen and second family room set up to be used as a bedroom room with a futon full bed, Hawaiian armoire and office nook.
Downstairs has a bedroom with a queen, wet bar and private bath and lanai. A second and third bedrooms consist of two twins (covert-able to kings) each with its own bath, private lanai and wet bar. The separate unit consists of a queen, private bath and kitchenette. All bedrooms have a TV and wet bar. The beach home also comes with a full laundry facility, wireless and patio table for eight and an extra BBQ in the patio area.
We also have two Pak-n-Plays, high chair and three fold-aways for extra sleeping accommodations.
Other amenities include beach equipment, boogie boards, snorkel gear and three strand cruisers (bikes).
Amenities near by are White Sand Beach (aka, Magic Sands, aka La'aloa Beach) 2-3 minute walk, Khalu'u Bay a 10 minute walk for snorkeling, Kona Village 20 minute bike ride or 10 minute car ride, KTA Shopping center a 4-5 minute drive and the birth place of King Kamehameha III and all the associated historical reference just to name a few.
Water sports is extremely big on the Big Island. Banyans, a world famous surf spot is on a 2-3 minute drive located at the 2 mile marker along Ali'i drive, Snorkeling can be done just about anywhere along the coast when its calm, usually in the morning hours. There are many luanch points for paddle boarding and kayaking. Surf lessons can be conveniently taken at Kahalu'u Bay through Kahalu'u Bay Surf and Sea which is just a short distance from the Hale.
Some recent updates to the home include a new washer and dryer, new refrigerator, range, dishwasher, microwave, cushion covers, tiled lanais, O'hana lanai and new fans throughout the home.
Daily price of $449 is the quiet season price. Prices and minimum stay vary depending on time of year.
First two weeks of October - $795 a night. Minimum stay of 10 days.
Mid December to the end of March - $695 a night. Minimum stay of 7 nights.

About Mike & Laura (Owners)
Owners and operators Mike & Laura, married for 33 years and semi retired love to travel to the Big Island. Its our favorite island of all the islands because of its laid back feel and the friendliness of the local people. Mike grew up in New Mexico and Laura in Southern California. We currently live in Southern California and look to be living in Kona in the future.

We love this property because of its location, close to the beach, close to snorkeling and surfing and it's quiet location. The home also fits our family well when we come out to stay. We especially love waking up in the mornings to the sounds of birds and the ocean. Our favorite thing to do is to walk down and watch the sunset every evening and come back and BBQ and sit around, eat and talk story on the upstairs lanai.
What makes this House unique
The feel of the home is Hawaiian in and out. Our daily routine is, early morning run or walk on Al'i Dr. Walk to either Magic Sands Beach Park or Kahalu'u Beach Park to snorkel. Come home wash of the sand at the outside shower and jump into the pool, then BBQ on the Lanai and watch sunset. Get an occasional golf game in or just simply just sit and relax.

We were six adults and one child on vacation and the home was perfect.
Comfortable, well equipped, providing good common space but also allowing for private space.
The location was great. Easy access to beaches, markets,and shopping.

My family stayed for 10 days. We were 10 adults (5 couples), 2 kids, and 2 infants. The house was great. All the families had their own room and bathroom - a huge plus, and either had a queen or a king bed in them. The kids had twins to sleep in and the two pack and plays were very handy.
Pros: So many amenities! Bath towels, beach towels, so many pool toys and beach stuff. We wished we had a wagon, but there were coolers to use, snorkels, chairs, umbrellas, etc. We also wished we had checked out the pantry before hitting the grocery. So many more 'basics' (flour, sugar, seasonings, oil, coffee, filters, trash bags, etc.) than we had thought would be there. I'm sure some these are left over from others, and we left a bit ourselves, but it was great to have. Lots of dishes and pots and pans. The guest house didn't have dishes, but we made it work. Also lots of bug spray and suntan lotion in the rooms that we didn't even see till the end of the trip. The pool was the perfect size for us and we were in it daily. It was very private from the neighbors. We loved the kids books and games available. Two full size refrigerators and 3 mini fridges were great. We overdid the initial food purchases and filled them all.
Cons: The only two cons were no real indoor communal eating area and the layout of the house leads people to walk through your room. For the first -the owners provided several extra folding tables and we set them up outside to eat together. You have to deal with the mosquitoes, but it is possible to eat together (and they had citronella candles outside). We ate breakfast and lunch more independently. It might be nice to turn the living room into an eating area. But the living room and upper porch are very comfy spots to hang out. On the layout - all the d/s bedrooms have outside doors. The front door is located furthest from the drive and the pool. While it is possible to route people through this door, we just accepted the kids (and adults staying in the guest house) would walk through the pool side rooms, and everyone from the drive walked through the room closest.
Location: great spot. You can easily walk to Magic Sands beach and we drove (b/c of small kids) to Kahaluu Beach Park (0.8mi). Kahaluu has great snorkeling and the waves were easier on the kids. About 15 minutes from Safeway and Aloha One Shaved Ice (best place and we tried a bunch)! Would definitely recommend this place!
Beautiful House in Kona
We stayed at the house in early February 2018. They house is beautifully decorated in a Hawaiian theme with plenty of bedrooms.
The outdoor room with kitchen is great for someone who does not have kids, to get away and have their own space, this room has no air conditioning so you can not be in the room during the day because it is to hot. Some maintenance needs to be performed in this room, the ice maker does not work and the sink in the bathroom only has cold water.
The main house kitchen is small and the counters are really high. My family loves cooking this kitchen was hard to cook in due to the very limited space. The house holds 12 people but there is no place for 12 people to sit at one time around a table. My family is very family oriented so sitting together at meal time is a big deal. The pool is beautiful, but you can only access the pool from the house through the two downstairs bedrooms the stairs are steep and narrow making it hard to bring food and drinks down to the pool area. I do not recommend this house with Children under 5 years old, there are lots of stairs. The high chairs and pack and plays were greatly appreciated. The Magic Sands Beach is walking distance, this beach has no sand on it during the winter pretty to look at but you can not go in the water.
Pool toys and snorkeling gear are greatly appreciated, many are broken or moldy and need to be thrown out.

The sunsets are amazing from the outdoor sitting area, but this area holds 4 to 6 people comfortably.

Mahalo for the review. Thank you for bringing to our attention about the ice maker and bathroom. We just put in new flooring in both the main ohana and bathroom and we most likely didn't reconnect either. A mention to us during your stay and we could've fixed it. And we' apologize for not having a 12 person table to eat on. I don't know of any place we would ever find one nor do we think it'll fit. We do have portable tables to make up for it. As for kids and stairs we do have child gates along with the other child amenities for guest use and are readily accessible. We've personally never had issues with young children during our stay nor has there been previous concerns from other guest. There are two other gates to access the pool as well other than the bedrooms and all stairways have been built to code. As a reminder we have sleeping for 12 with the 3 queens, 2 kings and a full size futon that has slept 12 or more comfortably in the past. We do have 2 custom Bahama Beds being made for future use that will simply add more comfort. The beach being referred to is called Magic Sands. Why is it called "Magic" or "Disappearing" sands? The action of the surf here literally pulls the sand off the beach periodically, exposing the lava rocks that were buried by the sand. When the sand is removed from the beach, the underlying lava rocks are exposed. Alohaʻoe a mahalo loa.
Living in paradise
We booked this property over 1 year ago. It was absolutely the best decision we could have made for your large family to spend Christmas in Hawaii. The property met and exceeded our expectations. It included boogie boards, snorkeling equipment and even bikes for riding into town. The pool area as well as the upstairs lanai ( my favorite place) was a great spot for sitting and reading a book. We were 5 minutes from Magic Sand beach which had the most spectacular sunsets you could ever imagine, not to mention the snorkeling beach 20 minutes up the road the other way. Each bedroom was a private area for each of my family members including the grand kids. I would recommend this place in a heart beat. Mike the owner and the house manager Cassie were both great to get along with. Thanks for the great holiday. We will be back.

Wish I didn’t have to leave
This was a long time coming were I was able to have a trip with my family. My wife, 3yr old son, and my 13 month old daughter. First off everything needed for my young crazy kids was in place (baby gates, pack in play, doors with locks, pool safely locked up unless we wanted it open, no breakables laying around for them to destroy). Then comes location I couldn’t have asked for better 10 min walk I was surfing at a point break just south of the house then I would come back take the kids to magic sands beach which was a 3 min walk
Shielded from winds by Maunaloa, south Kona’s calm and clear waters are perfect for snorkeling, diving and spotting dolphins and honu (Hawaiian green sea turtles). One of Kona’s most memorable experiences is going on a manta ray boat tour to scuba or snorkel with these gentle, graceful sea creatures. Kona is also famous for its deep-sea fishing, hosting the International Billfish Tournament (August) every year. Any and all final bookings will be after the booking/property manager can verify verbally information with the client and discuss terms in detail. Quiet time is from 9:00 PM to 8:00 AM. This is a neighborhood and year around residents live here. If your stay is going to include any form of celebration please advise us so that we can provide you with our process of informing neighbors and revisiting specific rules of the house. Maximum occupancy is 12, please do not exceed this without prior approval during the booking process. Number guests of guests. Guests are welcome but please no outrageous party’s and remember the home sleeps a maximum of 12 unless other accommodations were made during the booking process. Please don't earange the furniture. Please don't take bath towels at the beach. We supply enough beach towels for the beach. Please don’t use the bath towels for cleaning up messes or for makeup removal. Fees can result for replacement of the towels if they cannot be washed. Please don't smoke inside. Please don't smoke outside. Please don't eat in the living room. Hawaiian furniture is hard to get and redo! Please don't place pots and pans in the dishwasher. Please honor our no shoes inside policy. Please don't burn candles. Please don't place glasses on the coffee table without coasters. Trash day is on Mondays. Guest will be reminded to take place the trash cans on the edge of the driveway the night before by email on file but it’s the responsibility of the guest the trash receptacles out. If we have to call the disposal company for a special pick up a fee of $100 will be charged. Pool Rules: No lifeguard on duty. Swim at your own risk. Children are allowed to swim or play in the pool only when adults are present. Please maintain constant supervision over children. No pets allowed in the pool. Walk slowly in the pool area. No roughhousing, dunking or pushing.
