People call it the Blue Lagoon home. The official Hawaiian name for the home is "Hale 'Olu Olu", "The home of relaxation and comfort" which was recently given the name by Kahu Danny Akaka after a traditional Hawaiian house blessing was done for the home. This family friendly Hawaiian beach house is a great hub for birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, wedding get together and don't forget the annual Ironman world championship.

The property is dotted with palms, fruit and plumeria trees. The home sits in a friendly and normally quiet cul-de-sac in a friendly Kona neighborhood.

The Hale 'Olu Olu is a large two story home. All bedrooms have its own private bath and entryway along with a private lanai. All the downstairs rooms have an upgraded feature of a wet bar for added convenience. The home has a separate stand-alone unit for additional privacy. About Mike & Laura (Owners)

Owners and operators Mike & Laura, married for 33 years and semi retired love to travel to the Big Island. Its our favorite island of all the islands because of its laid back feel and the friendliness of the local people. Mike grew up in New Mexico and Laura in Southern California. We currently live in Southern California and look to be living in Kona in the future.

Mike & Laura (Owners) purchased this house in 2014

Why Mike & Laura (Owners) chose Kona Coast

We love this property because of its location, close to the beach, close to snorkeling and surfing and it's quiet location. The home also fits our family well when we come out to stay. We especially love waking up in the mornings to the sounds of birds and the ocean. Our favorite thing to do is to walk down and watch the sunset every evening and come back and BBQ and sit around, eat and talk story on the upstairs lanai.

What makes this house unique

The feel of the home is Hawaiian in and out. Our daily routine is, early morning run or walk on Al'i Dr. Walk to either Magic Sands Beach Park or Kahalu'u Beach Park to snorkel. Come home wash of the sand at the outside shower and jump into the pool, then BBQ on the Lanai and watch sunset. Get an occasional golf game in or just simply just sit and relax.

Shielded from winds by Maunaloa, south Kona’s calm and clear waters are perfect for snorkeling, diving and spotting dolphins and honu (Hawaiian green sea turtles). One of Kona’s most memorable experiences is going on a manta ray boat tour to scuba or snorkel with these gentle, graceful sea creatures. Kona is also famous for its deep-sea fishing, hosting the International Billfish Tournament (August) every year. And on land, don’t forget to travel to the cooler upland slopes of towns like Holualoa, where you can sample the distinctive flavors of 100% Kona coffee. On the versatile Kona coast, you’ll find the adventures are as big as the island itself.

Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely wonderful. House was spotless so much room and each bedroom has its own bath!

Ohana was perfect for my daughters little family...the pool was perfect, and the lanai off the kitchen's view of sunset was gorgeous. Walked to magic sands to swim each day veey convenient for young and old alike. The house decor was extremely tasteful and the house held everything we needed.

Highly recommend for families with children of all ages...or for couples wanting to get away.

We too feel that the home is great for families and couples alike and made a effort to set it up that way both with convenience and the decor. We were a very large group but accommodated nicely in the home. The pool was wonderful.

  • 4 of 5

The home was an interesting one, with screens and windows, no solid outside walls. We enjoyed the lovely pool and the children loved the pool toys, great choices. The lanais and barbecue were very useful and lovely. We felt there was a shortage of soap for dishes, laundry, and baths. The dishwasher was a little iffy and the refrigerator, although nice and large was inadequate for making ice. We loved how close the home was to the beach and within a good distance for shopping. Altogether, I would say we had a super time in a super place with many desirous of returning soon. Thank you.

Owner's Response: Aloha Joan, Mahalo for your review. We're happy you enjoyed your stay and hope to see you return as you mentioned. In response to some of your mentioned concerns:... 1. shortage of soap for dishes, laundry, and baths. This is the first time we've had mention of a shortage for these items since the hale has been a vacation rental >>>> The hale is setup for a large group and our maximum of 12 people when it comes to supplies. We also mention in our welcome information that if there are any concerns or issues to call us or our Home Support Specialist, Cassie to remedy them. With this feedback we will reevaluate our inventory for future stays.... 2. The dishwasher was a little iffy >>>> More feedback on this would be great so we can look into what the exact "iffy" is. We will check it out though.... 3. and the refrigerator, although nice and large was inadequate for making ice >>>> Not sure what to say about this but as with all or most refrigerators and large groups we do have to buy extra ice at times.... 4. The home was an interesting one, with screens and windows, no solid outside walls >>>> Just to reiterate what we have in our opening description >>> The official Hawaiian name for the home is "Hale 'Olu Olu", "The home of relax and comfort" which was recently given the name by Kahu Danny Akaka after a traditional Hawaiian house blessing was done for the home. The home is considered a great Hawaii beach house with nice Hawaiian decor. Park the car and walk to the beach. It’s a 5 minute walk to White Sands Beach (aka, Magic Sands Beach) and a 10 minute walk to Kahalu’u Beach Park, one of Kona’s premier snorkeling spots. The Hale 'Olu Olu is a private home nestled in the quiet community of White Sands Estates. The home is built to feel as if you’re "sleeping in the open tropical air and trees" with detailed Hawaiian features throughout the home. As with most homes in Hawaii, and due to the climate it's very common to have single wall construction homes with screens. Please advise us as to what we can do next to earn a 5 star review. Amazing

  • 5 of 5

This was our first time in Kona and we enjoyed our time at the house as well visting the beautiful beaches. It was definitely hot and humid some days but we jumped in the pool and head to the beach to cool off. The best part of the trip was snorkeling with the manta rays and dolphins. We will definitely will come back.

Very Comfortable

  • 4 of 5

We rented this for a family reunion and it worked out perfectly! Having enough beds and baths for everyone was a big plus. Everything was very clean and tidy. Having a well stocked kitchen was also a big plus (since we all love to cook), so by and large we didn't have to buy basics (salt, etc), or even some extras (sriracha sauce, etc.).

A thoughtful gift of fruit was provided midway through our stay.

Children and adults alike enjoyed the pool. We did buy extra fans for the master room as it seemed warmer than the downstairs rooms, so those were left for future guests.

Beds were comfortable, ceiling fans an asset. The short walk (5-10 min.) to the beach was pleasant.

We did find the mop to clean up spills, but couldn't locate a bucket. The microwave appears to need some securing to the wall behind it. The kitchen knives were in very poor condition and I spent about an hour trying to sharpen them, but didn't make much headway.

All in all a wonderful holiday. We would definitely consider returning!

Owner's Response: Aloha Sara, Mahalo for your review and feedback. We're extremely happy you enjoyed all the amenities the Blue Lagoon, or as the locals affectionately call it, "Hale 'Olu 'Olu", (the home of relaxation and talk story), has to offer. This is our second set of knives in three years. Living so close to the ocean tends to dull them faster than normal. We'll get someone in to sharpen them before our next guest check in and the same with tightening up the loose microwave. Mahalo for bringing that to our attention. We do look forward to your return. Again mahalo for considering our hale. Aloha. Mike & Laura.
