About Sonya Crandall

Hi Travelers! We are Lee and Sonya Crandall, owners of the 'Sundowner' cabin. We reside in Clemson, SC where Lee works as a Professor and Sonya is a PhD student. We both have had professional careers in health care planning and public health in Florida prior to moving to the area in 2007. We have an adult son, two daughters, and a dog named Jake who all love the mountains!

Sonya Crandall purchased this cabin in 2010

Why Sonya Crandall chose Smoky Mountains

We purchased the cabin as a weekend getaway to the mountains for our family. We enjoy visiting Cherokee, Dollywood, and nearby Asheville. We also have fun attending various festivals in Maggie Valley and Waynesville. We decided to share our mountain retreat with guests in 2014. This year, 2015, promises to be a delightful year in the mountains. Spring in the air and the freshness and the beauty of mountains is all around us!

What makes this cabin unique

The moment we saw the great views at the Sundowner we were hooked! It is an awesome retreat and really helps us unwind. We feel close to nature and yet close to so many amenities!

Poorly managed and maintained

  • 2 of 5

Unfortunately, we cannot recommend this property to other renters, for the following reasons:

UNCLEANLINESS: We noticed soon after our arrival that the house had not been cleaned, despite the fact that renters pay a cleaning fee for this property. The kitchen sink and counter top, and sinks and counter tops in both bathrooms, were dirty. It was obvious that none of the floors had been vacuumed. Then we noticed that three of the beds had no sheets on them. We found the sheets for the three beds, along with about a dozen wet bath and kitchen towels in the hamper next to the washing machine. I took pictures of it all, and texted the owner, sending her pictures of the dirty laundry and the sheetless bed in the master bedroom. The reply that I got back was that the maid had indeed cleaned the house and made all the beds, (despite the fact that I had texted the owner pictures to the contrary) but might have forgotten to do a few towels in the hamper. The maid is an out-and-out liar. There is no indication that she cleaned anything before our arrival. We decided to drop our complaint for the moment, as it probably wouldn't be wise to get into a feud with a local cleaning woman and her kinfolk while we were there on vacation.

WATER PRESSURE: During our week at this house we experienced long periods of very low water pressure. Two people couldn't take showers at the same time, or you couldn't take a shower while the dish washer was running. We thought of reporting it to the owner, but since she couldn't deal with an absent maid, we felt that she probably couldn't deal with a problem in the community water system.

DECK: We frequently noticed birds flying in and out of the soffitts above the sliding glass doors that lead from the living room to the deck. The outside door mats in front of those doors were covered with pelleted bird dropping when we arrived. I took the hose and cleaned it off, but realized the next day it was a losing battle. We ended up not using those doors, or the deck, for the rest of the stay.

DRIVEWAY: The driveway is very steep. It shouldn't be a problem as we have an all wheel drive Subaru. However, even our car hesitated over the humps and valleys where other cars have spun out trying to get up that hill.

Under no circumstances would we ever rent this house again. We have rented several, over the years, in that area. This is the only one that I have given a bad review.

Overall it was a great place, it took a little longer to get there than thought but it was in a good location for going to see the Elk.

Wonderful time at the Sundowner !

  • 5 of 5

Cabin was as described, and neat and clean. Beds were comfortable, and the cabin easily accommodated two couples. Wonderful view of the back porch of the mountains. Very quiet and peaceful. Will be definitely be going back on future trips. Plenty to do in the surrounding area... some of our favorites include the towns of Waynesville and Maggie Valley. The road leading to the access road to this community also serves to take you the back way into the Cataloochee Valley, where you can view the elk at sunset. Please note... the road that takes you up and over the mountain to the valley is not for the faint of heart! The cabin is also not far from Cherokee and the Great Smokey Mountain National Park. On the other side of Waynesville, take 276 over the mountain, and visit the Cradle of Forestry; a wonderful exhibit detailing the first forest management operations here in the US. I am just scratching the surface about all the things to do in the area, and the Sundowner was the perfect base from which to explore this amazing area.

The road going up the mountain was surprisingly wide and easy to navigate. The home and property/ view were amazing. I felt at home in the cabin.
