About Sonya Crandall

Hi Travelers! We are Lee and Sonya Crandall, owners of the 'Sundowner' cabin. We reside in Clemson, SC where Lee works as a Professor and Sonya is a PhD student. We both have had professional careers in health care planning and public health in Florida prior to moving to the area in 2007. We have an adult son, two daughters, and a dog named Jake who all love the mountains!

Sonya Crandall purchased this cabin in 2010

Why Sonya Crandall chose Smoky Mountains

We purchased the cabin as a weekend getaway to the mountains for our family. We enjoy visiting Cherokee, Dollywood, and nearby Asheville. We also have fun attending various festivals in Maggie Valley and Waynesville. We decided to share our mountain retreat with guests in 2014. This year, 2015, promises to be a delightful year in the mountains. Spring in the air and the freshness and the beauty of mountains is all around us!

What makes this cabin unique

The moment we saw the great views at the Sundowner we were hooked! It is an awesome retreat and really helps us unwind. We feel close to nature and yet close to so many amenities!

Wonderful time at the Sundowner !

  • 5 of 5

Cabin was as described, and neat and clean. Beds were comfortable, and the cabin easily accommodated two couples. Wonderful view of the back porch of the mountains. Very quiet and peaceful. Will be definitely be going back on future trips. Plenty to do in the surrounding area... some of our favorites include the towns of Waynesville and Maggie Valley. The road leading to the access road to this community also serves to take you the back way into the Cataloochee Valley, where you can view the elk at sunset. Please note... the road that takes you up and over the mountain to the valley is not for the faint of heart! The cabin is also not far from Cherokee and the Great Smokey Mountain National Park. On the other side of Waynesville, take 276 over the mountain, and visit the Cradle of Forestry; a wonderful exhibit detailing the first forest management operations here in the US. I am just scratching the surface about all the things to do in the area, and the Sundowner was the perfect base from which to explore this amazing area.

The road going up the mountain was surprisingly wide and easy to navigate. The home and property/ view were amazing. I felt at home in the cabin.

Outstanding Cabin!

  • 5 of 5

This cabin was simply delightful! Loved the privacy with outstanding views of the Smokey Mountains. The cabin was spacious, clean and very comfortable. We also enjoyed the wild raspberries growing on the property. The owners were very easy to work with for rental accommodations. Although WIFI was available, due to the beauty of the cabin and surroundings, no one in the family had the desire to even get on a computer. It was truly a refreshing break from everyday life.

Fall Leaves

  • 5 of 5

We went to visit the mountains during the fall leaves and WOW. Amazing. Beautiful, clean cabin with a view that will make you not want to leave! The road going up to the cabin is scary at night so I would plan on doing everything during the day. The hill going up/down to where you park your car is pretty steep so just be aware of that when booking this cabin. The donkeys at the bottom of the mountain are fun to feed! We just had such a great time, thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us.

Owner's Response: Hi and thank you for your favorable review. So glad you enjoyed yourselves! Good advice to drive in the mountains during the daytime if not familiar with the roads. We love our beautiful views and cozy cabin too. Please come again!
