Herons View is located on the desirable Burton peninsula, overlooking the idyllic inner Quartermaster Harbor. A short ferry ride from West Seattle or Tacoma, the island of Vashon has a distinctive character to it - very rural with a laid back feel to it. Don’t be surprised when you see cars with “Keep Vashon Weird” bumper stickers!
The village of Burton, one of the first settlements on Vashon, has a local store (Harbor Mercantile but everybody calls it Sandy’s store, after the owner), Post Office, barbers, a garage plus an art gallery and antiques store. The social hub of Burton is the Burton Coffee Stand, written about in the NY Times. Burton also has two marinas, one public and one for Quartermaster Yacht Club.
At the center of the Burton peninsula is the 68 acre Burton Acres park with many trails winding through its leafy woods. A ten minute walk takes you to Jensen Point park with all types of watersport equipment to rent. During the season, Dungeness and Red Rock crab are plentiful. Clams can be found in the tidelands (including huge geoduck clam). Remember to pick up your State shellfish license before clamming or crabbing and check the State Health Dept website for any health warnings.
Herons View is a birdwatcher’s paradise: we have a resident pair of Great Blue Herons that hang out on the dock and wade along the tideline. A couple of Belted Kingfishers enjoy perching on the dock pilings. In addition there are bald eagles, ospreys (aka sea hawks), hummingbirds and the usual seagulls and Canada geese. The Burton peninsula is home to many deer, so please drive slowly - and feel free to shoo them out of the garden!
A private road/driveway serves the house and its three neighbors. Five private parking spots are located at the top of the property and more parking is available in the driveway. The terraced garden at the front of the house contains lavender, rosemary, rhododendrons and many other plants. The gardens by the waterside contain raspberries, herb garden, blueberries and other herbaceous plants.
Probably the highlight of the property is the large ironwood (AKA ipe) deck right on the water. A large stone table comfortably seats six and an additional glass topped table seats a further six people. Steps lead down to the private beach and a floating dock lets you tie up a kayak, canoe or sailing dinghy. A mooring buoy is available, please email for more details like depth, tides etc. A large natural gas stainless BBQ with four burners and a side burner is just a couple of steps from the deck.
Large stone fireplace with gas stove insert. 55 inch LCD TV with Blu-ray player and receiver.
Couches that comfortably seat nine.
Solid maple wood dining room table with seats for eight
Cook’s kitchen! Newer stainless appliances including large side-by-side fridge freezer, gas stove with five burner cooktop, microwave, convection toaster oven, coffee maker and Miele dishwasher. Also well stocked with a blender, food processor, paella pan, etc. The kitchen is equipped for serving twelve people, with additional serving settings for another twelve.

We fell in love with this place as soon as we walked onto the deck overlooking Quartermaster Harbor. We love Burton and had looked at several houses in the area, but could not find a better place to hang out and enjoy the wildlife (seals, herons, osprey, bald eagles, loons, grebes, clams and starfish to name a few) and the boats going by. Yes, the house has a dining room but we have yet to use it, choosing the waterfront seating every time. We also loved the unique layout of the house, with the two roomy and peaceful master bedrooms. The upstairs second master suite allows the flexibility of additional space for tenants when needed.
Sarah Pynchon purchased this house in 2014
As mentioned a few times, the best features are the killer view, the abundant and varied wildlife, spacious accommodations and Burton location that all add up to easy, fun summer living.
An amazing wedding week on beautiful Vashon Island was made even more perfect by the decision to call this wonderful property "home" for several days.
The home is spacious and immaculate, the bedrooms comfortable and private, the kitchen well-stocked. Everything was considered by our gracious hosts and no detail was overlooked. The large deck with spectacular views of the harbor became our favorite gathering spot for early morning coffee, moments of reflection and long relaxing dinners.
This was a perfect spot for generations of family to gather together and create memories. We can hardly wait to return!
The dock and mooring buoy were great to bring our boat. Plenty of room for everyone. Nice new appliances. We will stay here again.
A beautiful house, well-equipped for socializing, but also nice a quiet for place relaxing. Very clean with like-new appliances, furniture, and bedding. The owner welcomed us and showed us how to use the locks, appliances, etc., and also shared tips for enjoying Vashon island, such as renting kayaks at nearby Jensen Point. The owners set up the bedrooms the way we wanted -- pairs of twin beds rather than king beds -- and opened the sofa bed for us. (We didn't need the extra space upstairs.) The whole family, especially the kids, enjoyed the large deck and the views over the harbor. The property is well-landscaped and is in a nice neighborhood on Vashon. We would definitely stay here again and recommend this property to friends.
We had a family wedding on the island. We needed to accommodate 10 people. The house was close to the wedding venue and looked nice. We were more than pleasantly surprised upon arrival. The place was spotless and the deck over the water just beautiful! Less than 1/2 mile away we could rent kayaks and SUPs. There was plenty of parking for guests. Family members at other rentals all wanted to come to our place to hang out on the deck. Wonderful hosts and great overall experience. Thanks!
Here's why our three families - 5 adults, 5 children ages 4 to 14 - enjoyed our stay here: Three sleeping areas each with private bath. Plenty of room to spread out. Spacious deck with comfy seating overlooking water. Easy walk to Burton. Two separate TV areas (for rainy days and pre-teens.) Easy drive to pool. Although kids enjoyed playing on floating dock, no yard and cramped dining area were the only negatives for our particular needs.
Need instructions/manuals for operating media in living room.
Provide 10-12 oz glassware/barware; smaller plastic cups
Update instructions in binder (there is no green can? does all recycling (paper and glass) go in blue bin?)
We had a wonderful family reunion on the 4th of July. The house was beautiful with a large deck that accommodated everyone. The bed linens were very nice with plenty extra pillows and blankets. The kitchen had all the appliance, cookware ,dishes and glassware. Thank you . Everyone had a great time and wonderful memories were created.
