Overview

About the property

5 bedroom(inc. master and an owners’ suite) beachhouse with dock and buoy

Herons View is located on the desirable Burton peninsula, overlooking the idyllic inner Quartermaster Harbor. A short ferry ride from West Seattle or Tacoma, the island of Vashon has a distinctive character to it - very rural with a laid back feel to it. Don’t be surprised when you see cars with “Keep Vashon Weird” bumper stickers!

The village of Burton, one of the first settlements on Vashon, has a local store (Harbor Mercantile but everybody calls it Sandy’s store, after the owner), Post Office, barbers, a garage plus an art gallery and antiques store. The social hub of Burton is the Burton Coffee Stand, written about in the NY Times. Burton also has two marinas, one public and one for Quartermaster Yacht Club.

At the center of the Burton peninsula is the 68 acre Burton Acres park with many trails winding through its leafy woods. A ten minute walk takes you to Jensen Point park with all types of watersport equipment to rent. During the season, Dungeness and Red Rock crab are plentiful. Clams can be found in the tidelands (including huge geoduck clam). Remember to pick up your State shellfish license before clamming or crabbing and check the State Health Dept website for any health warnings.

Herons View is a birdwatcher’s paradise: we have a resident pair of Great Blue Herons that hang out on the dock and wade along the tideline. A couple of Belted Kingfishers enjoy perching on the dock pilings. In addition there are bald eagles, ospreys (aka sea hawks), hummingbirds and the usual seagulls and Canada geese. The Burton peninsula is home to many deer, so please drive slowly - and feel free to shoo them out of the garden!

A private road/driveway serves the house and its three neighbors. Five private parking spots are located at the top of the property and more parking is available in the driveway. The terraced garden at the front of the house contains lavender, rosemary, rhododendrons and many other plants. The gardens by the waterside contain raspberries, herb garden, blueberries and other herbaceous plants.

Probably the highlight of the property is the large ironwood (AKA ipe) deck right on the water. A large stone table comfortably seats six and an additional glass topped table seats a further six people. Steps lead down to the private beach and a floating dock lets you tie up a kayak, canoe or sailing dinghy. A mooring buoy is available, please email for more details like depth, tides etc. A large natural gas stainless BBQ with four burners and a side burner is just a couple of steps from the deck.

Accommodations include:

Living room

Large stone fireplace with gas stove insert. 55 inch LCD TV with Blu-ray player and receiver.

Couches that comfortably seat nine.

Dining room

Solid maple wood dining room table with seats for eight

Kitchen

Cook’s kitchen! Newer stainless appliances including large side-by-side fridge freezer, gas stove with five burner cooktop, microwave, convection toaster oven, coffee maker and Miele dishwasher. Also well stocked with a blender, food processor, paella pan, etc. The kitchen is equipped for serving twelve people, with additional serving settings for another twelve.

Downstairs Master bedroom

With large sliding doors and windows overlooking the water, this beautiful master bedroom consists of a sleeping area with a king sized bed, a fireplace and roomy seating area, walk-in closet with California Closet fittings and hotel style safe and a bathroom with a large walk in shower.

Laundry room

Southeast bedroom

Consists of two twin beds which can be put together to make a king wide bed and a large closet.

Southwest bedroom

Similarly furnished with two twin beds which can be put together to make a king wide bed and a wardrobe.

Family bathroom

Recently remodeled with twin sinks, soaking bathtub and dual shower.

Bedroom/Den

This room can be used as a den, game room or bedroom with a leather queen sized sleeper sofa, game table and chairs. A 40 inch LCD TV sits on a set of cabinets with games, puzzles and other entertainment. A large closet has California Closets shelves, drawers and hanging space. A powder room with toilet and sink is located off this room.

Second Floor Great Master Suite

Available for additional rent, this master suite takes up the entire second floor and overlooks the harbor. The suite has a king sized bed, seating area in front of the fireplace (note, fireplace gas is turned off during the summer months), daybed with trundle (can be made up as two twins next to each other or king wide), closet and a bathroom. The bathroom consists of a shower, vanity with sink and toilet. In addition there is a desk, desktop PC, monitor and printer. Please note that if you choose not to rent with it, it will be vacant.

About Sarah Pynchon

We fell in love with this place as soon as we walked onto the deck overlooking Quartermaster Harbor. We love Burton and had looked at several houses in the area, but could not find a better place to hang out and enjoy the wildlife (seals, herons, osprey, bald eagles, loons, grebes, clams and starfish to name a few) and the boats going by. Yes, the house has a dining room but we have yet to use it, choosing the waterfront seating every time. We also loved the unique layout of the house, with the two roomy and peaceful master bedrooms. The upstairs second master suite allows the flexibility of additional space for tenants when needed.

Sarah Pynchon purchased this house in 2014

Why Sarah Pynchon chose Puget Sound North

As mentioned a few times, the best features are the killer view, the abundant and varied wildlife, spacious accommodations and Burton location that all add up to easy, fun summer living.

You'll never want to leave the deck!

  • 5 of 5

My only complaint is that we had to go! On the morning of check out my husband said, "Please don't make us go."

This vacation far surpassed our expectations from home to area and everything in between. Let me start at the highlight of our trip: that deck! We literally ate at home more and ordered takeout just so we could sit on the deck more. It is hard to see just how amazing the views and ambiance are out on the deck from photos. From morning to sunset we spent a fair amount of time at that table, eating, talking, working, etc. The deck is very spacious so plenty of room and the umbrella makes it so that we never had the sun glaring in our eyes. The kids loved the dock too and spent a fair share of the week catching crabs. I love when kids can play outdoors.

When we weren't on the deck we were still enjoying the views from the kitchen, living room, and master bedroom (we literally never used the dining room but it also has great views). I had to work while there, and if I wasn't working on the deck, I worked in the sitting room of the master bedroom on a comfortable chair with a small desk setup staring out at the birds, the sea lion that scouts the area, and the boats that sail by. Best. Office setup. Ever.

The layout of the house was so nice too, we had plenty of room for our family of seven and the rooms are spaced in a way that everyone feels like they have an area that is quiet and we aren't on top of one another. I loved that they had options too for king beds or two twins in the bedrooms. The master king bed was incredibly comfortable as well and plenty of pillows to choose from with nice soft sheets.

William and Sarah, the owners, were so accommodating and wonderful to work with providing us with everything we needed to know about the area, check in, etc. We also had plenty of things provided like games, great dish options, plenty of cookware, books, magazines, etc.

Last of all, we fell in love with Vashon Island. We are considering finding a place there because we loved it so much. We love the small town feel but being so close to big cities. We loved the locals, the restaurants, the shopping, the lighthouse, etc. We have so much more exploring to come and do, so we will be back!

Owner's Response: Marisa, thank you for the wonderful review. We agree with you that the deck is by far the best thing about the house. The view is amazing and we're so lucky to have the wildlife that lives in the area. Many guests like the layout too, it's nice to have the separation of bedrooms. We appreciate your comments about the us and the furnishings, it's satisfying to know that we've helped in making your vacation special. We look forward to hosting you again in the future.

Wow! The deck is amazing!

  • 5 of 5

We were so sad to leave Heron's View! The deck overlooking the water was truly special and our daughters would go out there first thing every morning to look for birds, crabs and other marine life. The house was very spacious with plenty of room for everyone, and anything you could possibly need was provided. We were there during a heat wave and were very pleasantly surprised how cool the house stayed despite the high temperatures. The owner showed us all the ins and outs of the house when we arrived and was very helpful and responsive. We are hoping that Heron's View will be available on our return trips to Vashon!

As close to the water as you can get!

  • 5 of 5

This home is the perfect base from which to discover and explore my new favorite place, Vashon island. It's comfortable, in a magnificent setting right on the water, and William and Sarah could not be more gracious hosts. This will be a trip that our family will never forget.

Great Location - Deck is Amazing

  • 5 of 5

We loved Herons View, especially the waterfront deck. Every day, we spent as much time as possible outside on this deck, eating, drinking, playing cards. The house had plenty of room for our group of eight. Great hosts too!

A perfect haven from home

  • 5 of 5

Another fantastic stay at Heron's View. Our hosts made sure our every need was taken care of. We visited the beach at Jenson Point just a short walk away, fun for our kids and a great picnic location. Henry the heron made appearances throughout the stay. We took a detour from our usual trip to Point Robinson Park (the lighthouse) and discovered Maury Island Marine Park. The descend down to the park is leisurely but remember you have to come back uphill, tough with small kids. There's a great covered picnic spot which came in handy with the late May rain showers. A Must-Do for those staying near Burton is morning coffee at Burton Coffee Stand. There's always someone interesting to chat to and the staff are super friendly. Our kids can't wait to come back to Vashon and there's not many locations better to enjoy the island than Heron's View.

Memories

  • 5 of 5

An amazing wedding week on beautiful Vashon Island was made even more perfect by the decision to call this wonderful property "home" for several days.

The home is spacious and immaculate, the bedrooms comfortable and private, the kitchen well-stocked. Everything was considered by our gracious hosts and no detail was overlooked. The large deck with spectacular views of the harbor became our favorite gathering spot for early morning coffee, moments of reflection and long relaxing dinners.

This was a perfect spot for generations of family to gather together and create memories. We can hardly wait to return!
