Patricia is a retired University professor and David is a retired dental surgeon. We have three grown up children and three grandchildren. We have lived in our very old house in a small village for more than thirty years. Our village is near the Cotswold hills in Gloucestershire, UK where we love to walk and ride and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
Patricia purchased this House in 2011
Why Patricia chose Deviock
When we were looking for a house in Cornwall, we fell in love with Sea Haze for its fantastic views, its comfort and spaciousness, its delightfully private garden and the ready access to both beach and good walking. When you enter the house, the Cornish magic starts to enfold you as you listen to the sound of the wavs crashing on the beach below and the song of the birds in the nearby trees. Sea Haze offers a unique haven of tranquility that ensures you sleep like a log and wake to an amazing sunrise over Rame Head. We didn't know when we bought our magical house that we would also find a magical village in this forgotten part of Cornwall. Not only is Downderry a charming and friendly village with a shop where they cant do enough to help you, but also the surrounding area remains amazingly unspoilt with extraordinary views in every direction. Our neighbours too are fantastic and very friendly to our guests, happy to help with advice about the best places to go.
What makes this House unique
Sea Haze is a very unusual house since it is built into the side of a cliff. The steep road that leads up to it ensures fantastic views and there is no passing traffic, so it is safe for children and dogs and very quiet. We love having breakfast on the balcony outside the kitchen looking out onto the expanse of Looe Bay and perhaps even seeing as far as the Eddystone Lighthouse. The house is located in a commanding position with uninterrupted sea views. As soon as we first visited the house, we fell in love with the views and knew we had to buy it. We love sitting in the garden where you are literally 'on top of the world'! And yet it is only a short stroll to the beach and local amenities even if the walk back is a bit more of a challenge! The sun stays on the back of the house most of the day so it is possible to relax in different parts of the garden while you contemplate the barbecue to come later on. One of our favourite places is the wisteria-covered terrace that overlooks the garden that for us evokes the romance of Italy. Above all, we love the fact that both the house and garden are very private and make it possible to enjoy the special atmosphere of Cornwall is peace and seclusion.

Sea Haze Review
We enjoyed a relaxing time at this property with an unexpected welcoming pack - our holiday experience was accurately reflected in the HomeAway description.
The property is well equipped and clean, and the terrace gardens are a delight even in the recent dry spell of weather. Like all homes there are some minor improvements which could be considered eg. low pressure in showers and several sun room windows having condensation issues in the double glazed units which partially spoils a very pleasant seascape view.
These are very minor points and overall we were very satisfied with the accommodation hence my 5* rating.
We enjoyed the local Blue Plate restaurant as recommended by the property owner Patricia, who is, btw, very helpful.
The local beach at Downderry is great for rock-pooling and general walks, but not so good if you prefer sandy beaches which can be found within reasonable driving distance
What I liked about the location is it is away from, but easy to reach tourist towns and villages (Looe, Polperro, Fowey etc) thereby catering for all holiday activity types
Overall a very pleasant stay, which we were fortunately able to extend.
I am so glad you had such a good time at Sea Haze. It is indeed located in a very special area - peaceful but with great access to a range of holiday activities and places.
Thank you for your alert about minor problems - we are working on these and have the plumber scheduled to come in to sort the water pressure. We are always grateful for constructive and positive feedback - thank you!
2019 update: we have installed a new water tank and system so the water pressure in the house is now excellent!
Sea views and great location
Sea views from every room, short drive to the beach or good workout if you want to walk. Good dog friendly beaches and pubs in downderry and Seaton. Plenty of parking at the property and beaches. few miles to Looe for seaside town shopping and beach. A few miles to caddy shack for excellent fish and chips booking needed or take out if not. The owners were very helpful when we had an issue which was resolved quickly.
We're so glad you enjoyed you stay even in chilly April! Downderry as a location has so much to offer all the year round with a cosy house to come back to where you can still enjoy the sea.
Very relaxing holiday
Great house-roomy and with incredible views-steep walk down to beach but worth it as it's a lovely, peaceful beach and dog friendly! House was very well-equipped-bit 'tired' but perfect for us
We'er so glad you had such a good holiday, Liz. You will be glad to know that we have given the house a complete overhaul over the winter with new carpets throughout and new bathrooms, including an en-suite loo in bedroom 4 so its raring to go for the 2018 season!
My seven year old son cried when we told him we had to leave because 'the house is so beautiful'
Magnificent views, good sized rooms, good quality bedding, overall a very impressive house!
Don't be put off by tales of the hob/oven. They are electric and worked just fine.
Thank you Andrew. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay at Sea Haze.
Sea Haze has magnificent, unobstructed views and a range of places to sit and enjoy them.
House has a very spacious/relaxing lounge and large comfortable beds +good quality bed linen. Easy access with both a large double garage and on road parking. Because of steep location, bedrooms are downstairs – drop from top floor to bottom of garden is considerable but well worth it. All that said, Sea Haze is rather tired in places. Thus a range of minor things could be done to reach the standard its price merits. Examples:
Very new Bedroom 2 en suite: shower door not square (bottom shuts but not top – not a problem due to low water pressure); toilet seat very loose – cannot be tightened as bolts hidden; and extractor fan not working.
Master Bedroom en suite sink plug not working properly.
Kitchen: balcony ‘door’ (tilt/ twist window) hard to close; pedal-bin broken pedal; mixer tap missing plastic nozzle so pours randomly; only one tea-towel provided (with a hole); kettle only does 4 mugs and toaster 2 slices in house for 8; hob was unreliable and took ages to cook; and oven was not trustworthy.
Hall toilet extractor fan not working +towel rail loose.
Bedroom corridor glass light needs raising – anyone c.6ft will knock it.
Garden/balcony furniture old, unmaintained and wobbly.
Glass dining table extensions need height adjusting.
Instructions: Though there was a drawer of various appliance instructions, a folder providing an overview and covering key points would be useful; also a 'defects' book.
Instructions for rubbish are essential otherwise you might end up with previous occupants’ refuse. The council provides 3x colour-coded, heavy duty, nylon recycling bags each with a list of what should go in it which, together with glass and general rubbish, are collected on a Monday. Kitchen bin is for all recycling and there were 4 large bin bags containing mixed rubbish (some mouldy due to having been there several weeks) at back of garage. We sorted it all and put glass into a large plant container as there was no bottle recycle box. All old and new refuse was taken and we then set the 3x bags in a row on a shelf in garage for filling with appropriate waste type as we went along.
We have holidayed in numerous UK cottages so know what may or may not be provided across a range of prices. Notwithstanding its splendid view, Sea Haze does not currently merit its asking price but, with some attention to detail, could. That said, for the price we agreed, we were generally content and very much enjoyed our stay. We hope that this honest feedback will help.
Thanks very much for your review and we are so glad that overall your party were generally content and enjoyed your stay at Sea Haze. We also think the landscape is absolutely stunning and were pleased that you enjoyed the house’s ‘magnificent, unobstructed views’ and the range of places to sit and enjoy them. We are also delighted that you liked relaxing in the lounge and found the beds comfortable and the house convenient for parking.
We are very sorry to hear that you felt there are some minor snags in the house’s décor and are grateful to you for flagging these. We take all our reviews very seriously as our guests’ comfort and enjoyment is our top priority. We have asked our builder to have a look at any of the issues you’ve mentioned and will work to get any problems remedied as soon as possible.
We are now working on an welcome folder for guests with instructions and advice about the house, including how to deal with the rubbish as it is clearly unacceptable to discover other people’s rubbish in the garage and we will ensure that this does not happen again.
Thank you again for your constructive feedback.
Stunning in every way
We had such a lovely time here. The home was clean and well presented and stocked with all the essentials to make the whole family comfortable.
Downderry is one of the undiscovered gems of the South Cornish coast. Only 20 minutes from Plymouth, it is readily accessible, yet still unspoilt. As well as the Downderry beach itself, nearby are the extensive beaches of Whitsand Bay and the charming ports of Looe and Polperro. The local pub lives up to its name of the 'Inn on the Shore' and serves modestly-priced food in a stunning location. Opposite is the famous 'Blue Plate' restaurant for more formal dining and nearby Seaton offers further choices for coffee and eating.
The South West coast path is just half a mile from the property offering stunning views as you walk either to Rame Head to the East or Looe to the West. There is also a monkey sanctuary about 3 miles away.
Dogs love the huge expanse of beach as do children where they can play in the many rock pools and collect shells as well as making sandcastles and swimming.
Cornwall is full of interesting things to do. We love the wonderful gardens to visit and walking the moors not far away inland especially when this is combined with a visit to the many delightful pubs and sea-side cafes nearby. There are a number of fascinating National Trust properties in the area including Antony, Cothele, and Lanhydrock as well as old churches and local rambles especially around Rame Head which is a few miles away and has stunning views.
The fishing port of Looe is just a few miles away and offers great beaches, an active fishing fleet, pubs and shops and even a steam railway.
Another lovely place to visit is Polperro which is about 12 miles away and is a quintessentially traditional Cornish fishing village. Not much further is the charming town of Fowey famed for its sailing and Plymouth itself is an easy drive offering a host of things to do including water sports, historic sights and shopping. Cornwall is wonderful in all seasons!
