About Lori Breen
Your hosts are Kevin and Lori Breen, their daughter Lark, and Australian Shepherd Arlo. They chose this house because of the ocean view and dog-friendly (leash) beach access! Having recently purchased and furnished Holiday House, they realize the limits of their "free" time to enjoy it, and are opening it to others who share their ideas of a great place to recreate and relax. Kevin is a Golf Course Superintendent, Lori is a mobile Notary/Signing Agent, Lark is a college student, and Arlo is the chaser of geese at Kevin's course. All four have different ideas of a perfect Holiday day, but sunset on the deck can't be beat.
Lori Breen purchased this House in 2015
Why Lori Breen chose La Selva Beach
It starts with the view and ends with the view, but the other factors were the peaceful and idyllic little neighborhood, the beautiful heather fields to the east, the pastoral few minutes on San Andreas Road through the eucalyptus groves, strawberry fields, and peeks of the ocean as you drive in from Highway 1. It is convenient to all that Santa Cruz offers without being near loud bars, restaurants, or college students...and Monterey has a different collection of draws: golf, the world famous aquarium, galleries and shops, 17 mile drive. But the best places we have found to enjoy are right in Aptos and Rio del Mar: Deluxe Foods, great BBQ, awesome breakfast joints, and lots of good vibes.
What makes this House unique
Surfers! Walk about 250 yards to Manresa State Beach. 20 min or less to all the other great breaks in Santa Cruz County. The beach is public access for 11 miles...lots of beach combing, kite flying, surf casting, boogie boarding, beach bonfires, whatever you like! Only 15 minutes from all the draws of Santa Cruz and Capitola: Beach Boardwalk, Downtown Santa Cruz, Natural Bridges Monarch Walk, Pasatiempo for golf, Forest of the Nicene Marks in Aptos for destination mountain biking. If you travel south, just 20-30 minutes away is Elkhorn Slough for wildlife and kayaking, 15 min further to Monterey and the world renowned aquarium, famous golf courses (Pebble Beach, Poppy Hill, Spyglass)

Perfect for a relaxing weekend away.
We were welcomed nicely into the home with a personal note and special treat. This property was stocked with all of the items we needed and had a wonderful layout for hanging out together as a family. The small fenced in backyard was perfect for our little dog and we all enjoyed the lovely walks to and on the beach.
I'm so glad you had a good getaway! Thanks for your prompt review and 5*s!!
Comfortable and convenient
Spent four nights during a busy Thanksgiving weekend and felt right at home! Lovely flowers and personal note from Lori met us on arrival. Beds are very comfortable, linens and towels top notch. Only minor issue was stove really needs to be upgraded - only 1of 4 burners work. Hard to cook even a simple breakfast. With that said, this a dog friendly beach house which was greatly appreciated as they are truly hard to find! Would definitely rent again!
Thanks for the positive review and 4 stars! The stove is old, but in fact three of the four burners function and heat WAY up. (I have a hard time cooking on electric as I am used to gas at home...) Sometimes they get out of place and don't have the connection, but there is also an electric griddle pan at the house that is perfect for breakfast foods and grilled sandwiches...We are looking forward to replacing it, but need to revamp the whole kitchen before we can remove the inset stove ;(
This was an absolutely lovely home to stay in! We were greeted with flowers and a card.
Everything in the home with stocked just to our needs. Our only major issue was that we had thought from the description that the home was right on the water. Or, rather on a cliff right on the water. Actually, it took a bit of a walk up and down a couple streets and then down the stairs to the beach. The beach was just lovely, and we enjoyed ourselves tremendously. I highly recommend this home, just be prepared not to be right on the water.
We found the home to be very comfortable
We needed a place to crash and unwind after a hectic weekend filled with family business. This home was just the ticket to do just that. While it is an older property, it has a certain charm and we would not hesitate to go back to this same location.
If there was a downside, our only comment would be that the house does not have screens on the windows. Off the upstairs family room, it begs to have the sweet smell of the ocean breeze wafting through the open windows. Unfortunately a few bugs also came with that ocean breeze.
With that one small caveat, the owner of the home is amazing and will make you feel right at home should you choose this location. You'll be glad you did!
This place is even better than it looks on the pictures. The rooms are spacious and the kitchen is very well equiped. The best part of the house is the deck with ocean (sunset) views!!!
We are so pleased that you found the house (and deck) to exceed your expectations! I haven't updated the photos recently, but that is a good reminder to do so. We actually had the carpets cleaned before your visit, and my sweet neighbor girl helped with putting everything to right after they dried. Clearly, she did an awesome job of setting it up for your arrival! It seems that it was a good fit for your two families, and I hope you can come again sometime!!
Cozy and beach - perfect old-school California beach trip.
We had a great time and loved that we were so close to a dog friendly beach. Even saw whales from the deck and only about 50 yards offshore.
Lori was helpful and left us a nice welcoming gift of phenomenal local strawberries.
It is clean, light and bright. In true beach style some of the finishes and fixtures are older, but all work well. The only disappointment was that there is not direct access to the grassy area. It does help keep the area very quiet.
The stairs to the beach are uneven, so go slowly. The beach itself is gorgeous and pretty sparsely populated even on summer weekends. Some days we had the place all to ourselves - amazing!
If you are looking to totally chill out, we highly recommend the Holiday House!
Isn't it amazing how the whales are just right out there!? It has been quite a summer for the migrating pods, and I just can't watch enough. We are happy that you had a good time, and hopefully the future holds a back gate for our little garden.
This location is unbeatable for walk in access to Manresa State Beach; 5-10 minutes to Aptos and Rio del Mar, with lots of small unique markets, restaurants, bars, and shops.15 minutes to all that Santa Cruz/Capitola offers, including the Beach Boardwalk for thrill seekers, surfing at all the famous breaks, shopping downtown SC, cultural offerings at the UC-Santa Cruz and Cabrillo College campuses, mountain biking at the Forest of Nicene Marks. 35-45 minutes south is Monterey with its golf, acquarium, restaurants, kayaking Elkhorn Slough. You could choose a different outing each day of the week!
