My husband and I called Hazel Mt.Retreat our "home" for three wonderful weeks after an extensive road trip through the US and Canada. It met our road-weary needs on multiple levels. Our hosts, Dick and Judy, made sure that our stay was not only comfortable but also culturally enriching with their area stories and must-do recommendations. The spacious, comfortable and beautifully appointed guesthouse is ideally situated in a quiet valley at the foot of the Shenandoah National Park. The park, its trails, lodges and Skyline Drive are a 20-minute drive from the house. Just five minutes away is the village of Sperryville with its antique shops, locavore eateries (don't miss the Thornton Grill), gourmet grocery store, Copper Fox distillery, area farm stands (gotta go to Roy's) and vineyards. Side trips to Luray (the caverns are stunning), Charlottsville (Monticello and the downtown plaza), Washington (the famous Little Washington Inn) and Culpepper (great downtown stores) kept us with more than enough to do. When not wanting to do anything, Hazel Mt. Haven gave us all it claims to be: a tranquil and restorative place where you can watch the changing light of the day, misty mountains and night skies. We were sad to leave at the end of our stay, but we promised ourselves a someday-soon return to this very special place.Recommended for: Age 55+, sightseeing, romantic getaway.

We loved this cottage. It was exceptionally roomy, tidy, and offered lovely views of the area. I rented this place because it met our needs and had a wood stove which I thought charming. Dick and Judy were welcoming hosts and helped start a fire in the stove when ours went out. The area abounds with nature hikes, wineries, restaurants, and surely much more than we could explore in the two nights we were there. We'd definitely go again.Recommended for: Age 55+, adventure seekers, girls getaway, families with young children.

I, my boyfriend and my cousin just spent a weekend staying here and it was wonderful. The description is accurate but there is a bit more. All linens are provided as well as a few kitchen items like sugar, salt, pepper, olive oil, coffee and tea in addition to the pots, pans and gobs of silverware. J & D were very helpful suggesting wineries to visit and they have a desk in the house with all the tourist info one needs (but I like asking a human). I really liked being able to access the owners' garden for fresh tomatoes, blackberries and raspberries. Within walking distance from the house is the Mt. Hazel trail which is an easy National Park Service trail that goes along a river. Withing a short drive is Sperryville where there is a store for provisions and further along 522 Gadino Cellars, the Blue Rock Inn, various farms, and Little Washington allowing for a fun dining and wining experience. I wish we could have stayed longer to enjoy the views, the beautiful views of the mountains and the rolling hills. I picked this particular property because of the price and it was well worth it. Only one small negative, the roads leading to the house are gravel and we had a tiny city car. Once we were confident navigating the hills and turns it was much better. If we are able to take off a whole week we will definitely return.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, romantic getaway.
