Car-free Bald Head Island, located on one of North Carolina's southernmost islands where the Cape Fear River meets the Atlantic Ocean, is just 35 miles south of Wilmington, NC. Accessible only by passenger ferry or private boat, Bald Head Island’s quiet, stress-free pace helps visitors appreciate the beauty of its 10,000 preservation acres of maritime forests and saltwater marshlands, and the 14 miles of spectacular beaches. Sabal palms grow naturally on the island thanks to the subtropical environs. Moreover, because of the island’s geography with eastern, western and southern beaches, it is possible to see the sun rise and set over the water from Bald Head Island.
Tucked away in the maritime forest, just a few minutes golf cart ride from the beach, the ferry and the Old Baldy lighthouse, are the Royal James condominiums.
The comfortable two bedroom condo at Royal James 1D is perfect for a simple, quiet time away. Royal James 1D is steps away from the refreshing swimming pool and a quick golf cart (a four passenger golf cart is at your service) or bike ride from the beach. Sit on the back balcony/deck and watch the birds and ospreys in and around the lagoon, or admire golfers on the course, or perhaps kick back with a novel while enjoying the shade of the live oak on one of the two shaded decks.
The use of the Bald Head Island Club’s pool, tennis, fitness center and dining rooms (Country Club - Toll Free: 866-657-7311) is available by arrangement and please call at least 2 weeks ahead to book your temporary membership by credit card. [Card will not be charged by the Bald Head Island Country Club until arrival. Please call the Country Club if you have questions.]
In addition to all of the fun activities on the miles of uncrowded, pristine beaches, the marshlands are accentuated by a beautiful meandering tidal creek that is perfect for kayaking or canoeing. Enjoy hiking and cycling all over the island or climbing up the historic 1817 lighthouse for a bird’s eye view of the island. Hike or bike the island and spot fox, deer, ospreys and other wildlife. Take an evening stroll on the beach and look for giant loggerhead sea turtles laying their eggs or the baby turtles hatching and crawling into the sea. The Nature Center offers guided nighttime turtle walks and other nature programs.
You may book your ferry reservation at (910) 457-5003 and inquire about the Ferry and Parking Fees.

Wonderful little place. Great central location, easy to get to beach and shops. But the owner was the best thing about our stay. She was more than helpful with making our reservations, and after arriving on the island. Can't say enough how pleased we are with her.Recommended for: Pet owners.

This is a wonderful place! Not only was it beautiful, it had more amenities than we thought. From golf carts, bikes, board games, a well equipped kitchen, comfortable beds... I just can't list them all! We usually go to Myrtle beach, but Baldhead is so much better. The balconies were wonderful. We had views of wildlife, as well as the golf course. A very inviting place! I can't say enough about it. And, the owners were wonderful!!!! THIS IS THE BEST!!!!!!!!Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Why the Owner Chose Bald Head Island:
We love Bald Head Island since we first visited in the early 1970s. Since then, we have owned property, visited and at one point, even lived on the island for a almost a decade.
The peaceful pace of the island where everyone cycles or rides in golf carts, the miles of open, clean uncrowded beaches, water to swim, kayak, surf or fish in all over the island, sunrises and sunsets over the water, and all the wildlife make Bald Head Island a special place.
