There was a time – before air conditioning, satellite television and the internet – when desert inhabitants were a breed apart. They lived their rugged, quiet lives almost invisible to the rest of us and identified with their harsh, natural world in ways that city dwellers did not understand. Their two-lane highways, telephone wires and lonely television antennas were their only connections to the outside world, and Route 66 was their mother road.
With a vision as big as a desert dawn, Cary set out to create a rustic world where the highway icons of the 1940s and 1950s could refill travelers’ imaginations again. Scavenging for roadside Americana throughout the deserts of the Southwest, Cary slowly built a collection of neon signs, gas pumps, classic car hulks and other colorful symbols of mid-century motoring. He assembled his treasures together around a quaint little bungalow and discovered something unexpected. He found that this humble getaway had the power to disarm, charm and transport his visitors to a slower, gentler world that they remember with fondness.
Yes, the Bungalow in the Boulders is a tastefully decorated, cozy home with all the modern comforts that a traveler expects. You will find ample crisp linens, a fully equipped kitchen, clean and modern furniture and plenty of electronic entertainment equipment. There is room enough to sleep an entire family indoors and abundant seating and cooking gear to entertain outdoors. You will stay warm by the cast iron fireplace or cool under the old-school swamp cooler.
Surrounded by such abundant natural beauty, you may find yourself in the mood to explore. With the entrance to Joshua Tree National Park just minutes away, you can get started on your own personal adventure almost immediately. If you decide to stay on the grounds, take time to explore and investigate Cary’s rustic collection of relics, set on five private acres of desert wilderness. The atmosphere at the Bungalow has inspired artists, photographers and even filmmakers to create enigmatic work, so bring your sketchbook, your paints, your journal, and most of all, your imagination.
When you try to explain the funky vibe you feel, surrounded by working neon signs, old-time highway artifacts and even a genuine bottle house, you may grasp for words. Imagine waking to the sound of quail gently cooing outside your screen door as the glorious morning sun streams through thousands of colorful bottles embedded in the walls of your quiet cabin. Imagine raising a glass by the brilliant light of the desert moon, whose only competition are the shimmering heavens stretched from horizon to horizon. Now imagine the faces of your closest friends aglow under vintage neon motel signs that once guided weary voyagers along forgotten highways to get-togethers just like this.
Come to the Bungalow in the Boulders to raise that glass, take that hike and swap stories around the fire. You may feel a gentle tug from days gone by when life seemed simple – almost as simple as it is at the Bungalow.

All of my life I have lived in Orange County and never visited Joshua Tree. After this trip we will definitely be back! Cary (the owner) was kind enough to let ourselves and two other families stay on the property at the same time. The idea was to have a camping trip with a few "extras" to make it much more bearable for some of the ladies who are not in love with camping, but are willing to endure for the sake of the kids. The wives shared the inside and were treated to flush toilets, warm showers, and all the modern conveniences one needs while out in the desert. The husbands and the kids camped outside in tents. The property was an amazing success and a perfect place for the families to stay while going to the park during the day. The bottle house was awesome for the kids to play and plot Nerf wars against each other, while the adults were captivated with all the work and detail Cary has put into the property. He has placed old cars, working neon signs, and all sorts of "treasures" that you will see. After a long hike, we let the kids put their feet in the soak tub relax before dinner. All in all it was a great trip and everyone in our party has already talked about coming back. Thanks for everything Bungalow in the Boulders!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, families with teenagers, families with young children.

I adored the Joshua Tree stay at Bungalow in the Boulders. It was relaxing, fun, funky and perfect. It was affordable, comfortable and exactly what I wanted. I did a super low key bachelorette with 2 others and we relaxed, cooked, hiked and enjoyed all Joshua Tree has to offer. We didn't want a hotel or anything stuffy. This was the opposite of that and I loved all of it. I can't say enough great things about it!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

This has to be hands down my favorite place I have ever found on VRBO. This place is an absolute dream! What Cary the owner has done with the property is nothing short of amazing. The bungalow itself came fully stocked with everything you could imagine from a Keurig Coffee Maker that he is kept stocked full of your choices of coffee and hot chocolate to the board games, full cable tv, vcr with movies to watch, even a drawer with phone chargers, this man has thought of everything!. The outside grounds are spectacular and magical and that's putting it simply. Both me and my husband were so sad to get back to the city after this dream of a vacation house. Thank you Cary, you have done an amazing job with your property, we have never experienced anything quite like it!!!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

No review could do justice to this little place of heaven in Joshua Tree. The rental house and bottle house are unique. It is the spot to stay for relaxation and it is a short drive to the town and to the park. My husband and I spent 5 wonderful nights here. We BBQ"d every night and spent the morning being entertained by the bunnies and birds. The owner was helpful and recommended a hike just up the road from the house, which was a treat to see the model train station. Hands down, this is the place to be in Joshua Tree.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

Pardon my language, Cary, but that is seriously one funkin’ fantastic property you have there. Scared spitless all night long but up frolicking with the bunnies at six A.M. Feeling watched at night and then completely invisible among it all, all day long. Checking every fifteen minutes if those really were sunglasses I was wearing because they sure as hell never seemed like it. It was all sooo good for me. I swear I saw a bear in the wash. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Next time you see that rock – the one that looks like a bear – remember I told you so. My friend tried giving names to the chipmunks in the yard, but it soon became a challenge to come up with names that were not somewhere in my family tree and too burdensome to consider, on vacation. “Go ahead,” I told her. “Pick another one. Bet I’m related to him, too. My family’s full of chipmunk names.” To the rest of you, pack carefully. I considered far too surely every spot I went to lay my stuff down in; I did not want to mess up the groove Cary had going on already, in every corner, and inside/out. Go there in a ’73 fastback Riviera, a Panama Hat with a bullet hole and a story down the middle of it, a girl who’s always underfoot but looks fine in a white sundress and a cowboy hat that’s made of mostly straw. Anything less, you’re only going to wish this were your life. Well played, Cary. An incredibly -retro one of a kind property. There is NOTHING else like Bungalow in the Boulders. The property boast acres of privacy, and a FANTASTIC patio where my friends and family had a beautiful lunch. Everything we needed was available including Keurig coffee pods that made us feel right at home. I created two wonderful watercolor paintings that know hang in our living room and look forward to coming back. We loved everything about The Bungalow, Carlos and familyRecommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, people with disabilities, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

This is a really special place in an excellent location equidistant from JTree village and the Park entrance. The house itself is surrounded by amazing vintage salvaged pieces and neon signs which you can light up in the evening to create an atmosphere like something from a film set. We really had an amazing time. Owner Cary was very attentive and caring and it seemed important for him that we had a good time. I can't wait to go back!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, girls getaway.

Bungalow in the Boulders is amazing! I got in Friday, after dark, and the sky was blanketed with stars. I haven’t seen so many shooting stars in years. I awoke early the next day, and walked out onto the back patio with a cup of coffee. The sun had not yet risen, but it was light enough to see the beautiful bottle house, the old, vintage signs, and all the other Americana interspersed among the Joshua Trees. It evoked a long forgotten childhood memory of a summer road tripwith my parents in an old Plymouth Station Wagon. I sat down and watched as the sun slowly came up over the hills. The air was suddenly filled with the soft cooing of quail and dove. They were feeding, along with a dozen cottontail rabbits, no more than ten feet from where I sat. It had rained a little the day before, and the fragrance of the desert was intoxicating. I sat there most of the day, soaking it all in, until the ringing of my cell phone jolted me harshly from my silent revery. It seemed so foreign to me now. So out of place. I thought of all the worries, obligations, and commitments that awaited me back in the real world. There were many. But for now, I was at the Bungalow, on a trip back in time. When it stopped ringing, I took it out of my pocket and powered it off. It stayed like that the entire weekend. On my next trip I’m not even going to bring it. Thanks Cary!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children.

Why the Owner Chose Joshua Tree:
I have been visiting Joshua Tree ever since my youth and told myself that one day I would have my own desert hideout. I found this property just steps outside the park boundaries and fell in love with it.
