Overview

About the property

Quaint hawaiian home from the plantations days on 1 acre of tropical splendor

This home is classic Old Hawaiian, built during the sugar cane days. It has been lovingly updated, keeping its charm, with a big grand kitchen and updated baths. A run to Safeway or Costco and you can stock up the large refrigerator and cupboards with all your needs for your stay.

The property is almost one acre, fully fenced, with mature trees and edibles: Papayas, Peach, Tangerine, Orange, Lime, Lychee, Star Fruit, Bananas and Macadamia Nuts. Feel free to pick what's ripe and enjoy!

There are ocean views from 2 of the bedrooms and the living room, that exits via sliding glass doors onto an open and sunny deck,

The weather here is generally, mostly sunny, just enough rain to keep things lush and green with cooler nights.

The main street, of Historic Honokaa Town, is just a short walk with a number of restaurants, shops and pubs.

Waipio Valley, the second most visited spot on the island, with beautiful black sand beaches and waterfalls is just a 15-minute drive from the property.

It is great to stay here when touring the island because you are centrally located and it's only 45 mins to Hilo and 1 hour to Kona! Great for also going to Mauna Kea too!

About Deanna Lang

My husband, Juergen and I both work in the medical field. I have a passion for health and wellness, exploring what that looks like and what it is to help others be their best, intended self on a spiritual and physical level.

We both have such a passion for the Big Island. It was when we were on the Big Island that we knew we were meant to be together. Ever since then, our love for and our heart longing for the island and its people has continually grown and grown.

Because of that, we knew we needed to find a precious place of our own that we could come to and share with others.

Deanna Lang purchased this house in 2017

Why Deanna Lang chose Honokaa

We instantly fell in love with this property for many reasons, a few are:

1. Walking distance to the main street of one of the last remaining historic towns.

2. A place with a strong community.

3. A place that is not overrun with resorts and tourism (yet), giving a true sense of Hawaii living.

4. Centrally located, providing opportunities to enjoy both sides of the island.

5. An area on the island that provides a happy medium between the "wet side" and the "dry side" of the island and offers comfortably cooler nights.

6. So close to Waipio Valley, Hawaii's Vally of the Kings!!

What makes this house unique

You will have our entire home and property to yourself during your stay, giving you a feeling that the home is all yours while you are here. You will experience "real" Hawaii living. This includes geckos, wild turkeys, coqui frogs, feral pigs, and chickens. It is our hope that you'll lovingly care for our home while you enjoy your stay. The plantation style home has 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, ocean views, is on one acre of fenced in property with tropical fruits and flowers to enjoy. Close to many attractions, yet with a location that is out of the hustle and bustle when wanting to relax after a busy day of enjoying all the island has to offer.

  • 5 of 5

PROS:

- Beautiful well appointed home with a good vibe.

- Fantastic view.

- Very clean on our arrival.

- Well located close enough by car to the big tourist attractions on the island.

- Rosters and frogs instead of traffic and stress.

- Nice short walk to the village.

- Owner provides all products necessary on your arrival.

- Deanna was always available.

CONS:

- Beds too soft to our liking.

- Missing a few pots, a lettuce spinner and a potato peeler.

OVERALL:

- A1. I would return, it was great.

Experience an Hawaiian neighborhood community

  • 5 of 5

The small town of Honoka'a is a perfect base for a Big Island stay, located about half way to Kailua-Kona and Hilo without the hustle and bustle of big tourist places. The Maile House is very neat and clean, and the view from the deck is amazing since all the houses were built on a hill. At night we enjoyed listening to sounds of coqui frogs (which we later learned were invasive to the Big Island but still charming to hear). We think the state bird of Hawaii should be the rooster since they are everywhere and crow at all hours. You get used to it. The only complaint we had was the lack of kitchen supplies in the wonderful modern kitchen. We had to buy our own 14-inch frying pan to assist with cooking for our group of 5 adults and hot pads would be useful, but we think in time the kitchen will be better stocked. There are some delightful restaurants in town, and if you're there on the first Friday of each month the community hosts an evening street fair with craft and food vendors, and many shops open late. Farmers Markets abound and they are a great way to get to know some of the delightful community people while stocking up on fresh local coffee and produce. All in all, I think we'd choose to stay there again whenever we return. Thank you Maile House!!

beautiful retreat

great place, comfortable digs in the small coastal town of Honoka'a! The attached fruit grove was a bonus, location was very convenient to Waipio valley, Waimea, the beaches of Hapuna and Mauna Kea, and even travels down to Hilo!

Wonderful home, perfect location!

  • 5 of 5

We previously lived on the Big Island (Ninole) and prefer the wet side to the dry. This home was the perfect location in between both for us to visit all of our favorite spots.

The home itself was wonderful. I enjoyed the enormous kitchen and having the ability to do laundry on site. The owners have thought of everything including beach towels, umbrellas, even a cooler for visitors use. We definitely wished we could have just moved in!

First trip to the big Island and this was a great home, in a great location, for our family of 5

  • 5 of 5

We were able to access many parts of the island from this location. This house is beautiful, with a wonderful kitchen that we used for cooking, an outside patio for early morning coffee that overlooked the ocean, beds were comfortable, house was clean, backyard was like a park with its own fruit trees, and we would do it again!
