Perfect for Family on a Budget - One Bedroom House

Bedrooms 1
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

House, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

This charming beach cottage is the perfect solution for the smaller family on a budget. Located on a nice, quiet court in North Mission Beach, the ocean and boardwalk are just a 45 second stroll away. Fresh paint and new furnishings have recently been added by the long-time owners of this spotless home.

As a single standalone house you have a private, fenced patio and no common walls with other units like the more expensive condo properties. This is true beach living reminiscent of the small California beaches of days long past.

Located in the Historic Mission Beach section, many shops and restaurants are nearby for your convenience. With a queen bed and a queen sofa/sleeper, there is plenty of room for Mom, Dad and 2 kids. And the prices beat any hotel in town this close to the ocean. Don't think you can't still afford your vacation in this economy - this house makes it a reality.

Close to the beach!!

  • 4 of 5

This little beach house is really nice because of the manager David. We had some issues that he resolved equitably and for that I am grateful. It does not have a screen door and is missing a screen in the living room but all in all we had a great time and would go back! The location is awesome and the neighborhood was very nice and quiet and having a single car garage at the beach was terrific!!

Fabulous location, but...

  • 3 of 5

The property is quaint and vintage...reminded my wife and I of our grandparent's homes in small town Midwest America. It is surrounded by bigger, flashier, more modern vacation rentals. However, the home was clean and has an incredible location!! Having stayed at other VRBOs, the home could use some upgrades in amenities... hair dryer, gas grill, kitchen utensils/dishes, larger TV, etc. Two of the 4 boogie boards provided were broken. One of the 4 outdoor plastic chairs provided was broken. Two of the 3 lawn chairs provided were broken. The sleeper couch is in very bad shape and unsafe for our kids; we just put the foam mattress topper on the floor. We feel like if the owner is advertising these amenities, then they should be functional!!

We chose to appreciate the "vintageness" of the place, but the owner does need to fix the above items. That would really take it to a new level of appreciation!

Smaller than the pics show, very dated

  • 2 of 5

The Good: The owner was very accommodating and allowed us to check in early and the location was perfect. Plenty of amazing bars and restaurants in all directions and attractions close by. The beach was about 20 paces away, which is always a plus. The Bad: the condo was very dated with paint chipping from the walls and shotty repairs that had been attempted from the past. The courtyard was very old with plants and trees that looked like they were on their last legs. If you like plastic then you would love the outdoor plastic table and 2 plastic chairs that were already cracked and barely useable. The Ugly: the refrigerator was rusted on the top, sides and around the edges of the door. Certain fixtures were also rusted and it appeared to have been many layers of paint over paint throughout the condo over the years. Honestly if the owner through 50k into the place it would a truly be a unique and cozy place to stay for a small family.

Owner's Response: Daniel, it is a house, not a condo. There is a difference. We also price it as the cheapest comparable rental in Mission Beach to make it affordable for small families like yours. If you haven't lived this close to the beach you wouldn't know that appliances develop a little rust very fast, and there are not "many layers of paint on the walls". You are welcome for being allowed to check in early - most owners are not as accommodating.

Simple, yet charming little house. Perfect for the family who is planning on being outside.

  • 5 of 5

We have been coming to this area for many years. Because of that, we are familiar with little beach houses such as this one, as well as with their pros and cons. This classic home is a perfect example of the quintessential Mission Beach cottage. It is not fancy. It is not new. Everything in this area, be it homes, vehicles, or structures gets a little worn from the salt air - it is a given, and something that must be expected when you stay in this area. This little house has some wear and tear, and that gives it some character. It is worth mentioning that the security screen door pictured was not there, and the little table in front only had one chair.

If you are looking for something super-nice or new, this may not be for you. However, if you are looking for a neat little place to sleep, make some quick meals, and call "home base" this is it! Conveniently located only a few steps from the beach, we found it perfect for our needs. Everything was clean inside, entry and exit was simple, and communication with the owner was outstanding. This was an A+ stay for us, and our only complaint was that our time there was far too short. As a family, we could live in this area, and if we could, we would certainly live in this house! Thank you, Dave!

Owner's Response: Thanks Crystal! I apologize about the chairs - I didn't realize that a couple of them had recently disappeared. I am replacing those tomorrow. I'm glad you "get" the Mission Beach experience. We try to offer a great price compared to anything else this close to the water.

Cute and quaint

  • 4 of 5

Great location! My husband and I love historic homes, so we could appreciate this little place and it's qwerks. It was a great rate for the location, but if the owner just put in a little more effort in the aesthetics he could charge more $$.... Besides that, it had everything we needed. The weekend we were there was cold and rainy, so we made good use of the extra blankets and little space heater. Kitchen had what we needed and bed was comfy. We would stay again.

We loved the location. The house is vintage which we appreciated

  • 4 of 5

House is in a great location. It has it's own garage which was a lifesaver by the beach. It is an authentic 40's house. Needed a little TLC here and there but the Mgr. was good at taking care of us. I cooked a big Easter dinner and there was enough of everything to get the job done. Close to the beach and walking distance from a lot of places to eat. We easily accessed a lot of places in town. Thanks Dave.
