On a sunlit ridge high above the Sonoma Valley and Napa Valley.Alpicella Vineyard and Villa combines a romantic retreat that is country yet sophisticated. The private cottage is part of a 6,000 acre pristine wilderness. The cottage has views that overlook our award winning, organic estate vineyard. The soul of this property is revealed through its full time residents. Friendly miniature donkeys, emu, and llamas. This estate vineyard and villa is located in the hills between Napa and Sonoma valley.We are within minutes of Sonoma,Glen Ellen and Healdsburg ,which contain many world class wineries and fine restaurants. You will discover a welcome respite in this natural and unhurried environment.

The 'magic' of this property is in its artesian spring fed waters that flow into the pools and ponds surrounding the home. Your hosts Daniel and Betsy will be more than happy to provide you with their extensive local knowledge of the wine country .

Are you kidding me?

Wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwww! I was speechless upon arrival and in awe for the entire visit. Dan you know exactly what I mean. Take it in and appreciate what he has built, (an oasis in the sky) or you have only cheated yourself. I could write a book or take all the pictures and post them, but it would fail to ever capture the magic and /or do it justice. Please don't go there or tell anyone else about this for my own selfish fear that it will be booked solid for years to come. I understand there are some great resorts and inns in town down the hill you might want to check out first!

Words cannot express what a wonderful experience we had while staying on this incredible property! The views and the sense of peace that you can achieve while staying here are truly unmatched. :) We found Dan and Betsy's place to be a perfect home base for our trip. It was easy to drive to the coast, Guerneville, Russian River Valley, and Sonoma. We were able to experience the best of both words - the natural beauty of Armstrong Woods and Sugarloaf Ridge State Park, as well as the wonderful wineries that the area has to offer. Our hosts offered valuable information, but more than that, they offered a little piece of their stories and their lives. We found our time there to be one of those experiences that restores your faith in man and in the power of nature to renew your soul. The property gives you a lot to do even if you choose to just 'stay in' that day. There were great hikes easily accessible in a short time, as well as a great pool-side massage option. And the animals were always ready and willing companions! :) We highly recommend the location for those who are looking for something different and who might be looking for a restorative vacation. The animals, the quiet, and the beautiful views made for a unique and unforgettable experience!

Absolutely fantastic!

We were lucky enough to spend an amazing and eventful weekend here (we got engaged!) before it was gone. The property was beyond beautiful; the sunsets were unmatched; the owners are delightful; the donkeys were hungry and not afraid to beg :). Sadly, the day after we left, the property was consumed by the Glass fire :(. We had every intention of returning multiple times over, and we are gutted that it's gone. Hopefully, Dan and Betsy will be able to rebuild. They are truly fantastic hosts and have so much to share. Thank you for a wonderful and memorable weekend.

The perfect American agriturismo

A beautiful property with wonderful hosts (they live on site in a separate house but all you see in the pictures is yours for your stay). If your Italy vacation was canceled due to covid, this is the next best thing. Great views, a relaxing pool, on site vineyard, and animals to befriend. If you stock up on groceries beforehand you won't need to leave but if you want to there are plenty of good restaurants, sights and wineries to visit (albiet requiring a windy road drive but Uber eats does deliver). At the time of our stay the wifi connection was quite weak so if you plan to stream video or get work done check with the hosts to see if it has been upgraded (they had just improved the internet speeds and were considering upgrading the wifi next). Cell service is iffy too so plan ahead (had some service with AT&T but only on certain parts of the property). Overall great place and we would definitely stay again. Thanks for a great time, Dan and Betsy!

Remote mountain paradise

As our first trip after lockdown, we wanted to make sure we took all precautions possible. That included staying in a quiet, remote area and foregoing a stay in a hotel. We left our comfort zone and decided to rent the house at Villa Apicella. When we arrived, we were greeted by the owner, Dan, who lives on the 70 acre property himself. The house rental was spotless, and essentials all provided for us (including freshly picked vegetables from the garden!) The expansive property, built in an area rich with history and spirtuality, included our own private pool, hiking trails, friendly donkeys (perhaps our highlight!), and spectacular mountain views. Some days we found ourselves not leaving the property, still with endless things to do. Dan and his wife Betsy were the most gracious hosts- kind and thoughtful. We already miss conversations with them about their interesting lives. After a week's stay, we felt refreshed and calm, with our views on travel lodging changed forever. We can't wait to go back and visit Dan, Betsy, and the donkeys!

Heaven on Earth

We stayed 6 nights and could really have used one or two more! Once you reach the property on the twisty, windy road you’ll see more than you could have ever imagined. The pictures in the listing just don’t do it justice. The views are absolutely breathtaking with amazing sunsets each night. From Bocce Ball to swimming to hiking, there are tons of activities to fill your time. Dan met us on arrival with a lovely glass of sangria which he made from the Sangiovese grapes grown in his vineyard. Delicious!!! Since we were here during harvest, we were even able to participate in the grape picking one morning! What an experience! Wildlife abounds, too. Deer, turkey, quail & hummingbirds are a common site. We also enjoyed feeding the 4 friendly donkeys who reside here. As far as the villa, it was lovely. It’s a quaint little place with more than enough room for 2. The bed is very comfortable and the jetted bathtub felt heavenly after a long day. I sure hope we have the opportunity to stay here with Dan and Betsy again! They are wonderful hosts and their property is simply a dream.

Peaceful rural retreat

It was just beautiful to be here...gazing out to the distant hills and valley while dining on the vine covered patio, resting on the lounges by the pool, or stepping out for an early morning read on the bedroom balcony. Dan and Betsy are charming and wonderful hosts.

A must visit!

Wow! This listing is one of the most beautiful rental properties I've ever seen! If you're considering staying in wine country, I highly highly recommend Daniel's villa. The view is unmatched and the serenity of the property is incredible. Daniel and Betsy are also such marvelous hosts going above and beyond to make our stay top notch. Daniel helped me pick fresh figs off his fig tree and even made us delicious, fresh sangria. Can't say enough about this amazing, warm hosts! Wish I got to spend more time with them and learn about their amazing adventures. Next time!

They have created a wonderful oasis which they so generously shared with us - tours of their vineyard, hiking trails, wine & tales of the fascinating lives they've created. Fantastic

Awesome stay. I had read previous reviews and thought they must have all been friends and family. Not true. What you'll read online is actually an understatement of what a wonderful place this is to stay. The view is incredible. sun sets are amazing, plenty of privacy if you want it, and Daniel and his wife were perfectly inviting and pleasant. I ended up eating dinner each night at the villa because I knew the experience up there would be hard to beat. My stay hit the spot - relaxing. private and a little educational with a tour of the on-site vineyard. I got some great recommendations for a few wineries to hit and other places to see. The only note or slight word of caution is - the road up to the house is a bit narrow and winds around the mountain, so make sure you have a driver if you're going out doing serious wine drinking. But it is very worth it to go the extra 10 min up the hill for the view and the location!!! 5 stars all the way.

Incredible retreat

This is a very special property nestled high in the Santa Rosa hills with incredible views. The photos cannot do justice to the natural beauty and tranquility of this charming location. Dan and his wife are superb hosts and made our brief weekend stay something truly memorable, including a tour of the property and a chance to feed the donkeys! Our only regret is that we could not stay longer. But we will definitely be back!

Quiet and restful

What a great place! Very quiet and peaceful. We had a great time relaxing away from the craziness of the Bay Area. The villa was in a perfect spot for us as we explored the upper reaches of the Napa Valley. Betsy and Dan were very welcoming and left us to our own devices when we wanted, invited us to spend time with them also if we wanted. We enjoyed the solitude and the only sound being from turkeys, donkeys and frogs.

The Perfect Wine Country Getaway

My girlfriend and I had an amazing stay at Villa Above the Vines. Our only regret is that we were not able to spend more time at the property itself, given our busy schedule and limited time. I have stayed in a lot of vacation rentals over the years and this was one of the most amazing I've experienced. It provided the perfect amount of seclusion and comfort, combined with award winning views of rolling hills and entertaining animals. The only thing that rivaled the property is the owners, Dan and Betsy. They truly went above and beyond in making our stay perfect. Dan gave us a great tour of their own 5 acres of vineyards, complete with samples of their Sangiovese, and hosted us at a chili cookout at a beautiful winery that they provide grapes to. Additionally, Betsy drove us around to multiple wineries in Sonoma and we were treated to free wine tastings due to their connections in the area. Clearly, I cannot recommend this property enough and very much hope to return.

Quiet Serenity

The Perfect Sanctuary

We could not have been more happy and WOWED by our stay at the Villa. From start to finish it was simply magical. With massages by the pool, feeding the donkeys fresh figs from the fig tree, playing with the kitties and spending happy hour(s) with Betsy and Daniel (the BEST VRBO hosts we have ever had) while watching the sunset every night, our stay was pure serenity and honestly surreal. The overall property is gorgeous and our Villa was perfect for us. Wonderful location for doing Sonoma wine tastings and Betsy and Daniel were a great resource for restaurants and vineyards to check out. We will definitely be back! -Rachel and Lori

Amazing!

My wife and I stayed here for our one year anniversary and it was absolutely amazing. Beautiful location with fantastic views. We were fortunate enough to be staying there during harvest and Dan was gracious enough to allow us to help a bit. The animals are a wonderful addition to the property as well. Dan and Betsy were wonderful hosts, greeting us with a glass of sangria upon arrival. Overall a fabulous time, and will definitely plan another trip here on our next visit to Sonoma.
