Anna Maria Historic Beachfront Cottage (Duplex)

Bedrooms 1
Space 350 sq ft
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

Cottage (duplex) 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

Welcome to our Cottage! If you are looking for a simple, quiet, stress-free place to enjoy the beach, this is it. It's not a fancy condo-- no long hallways, distant parking, elevators, or crowds. Best of all, the cottage is beachfront, so there are no streets to cross. The Cottage is a duplex, and this listing is for the smaller side. VRBO #77482 will show you the larger side. The two sides share a screened porch facing the beach.

The cottage was constructed in 1912 or so, as a caretaker's home for a larger house which is now gone. It has been carefully maintained and updated, but has retained the charm of a bygone era.

The interior walls are heart pine, and so are the floors, refinished by hand. Furnishings have been chosen for comfort-- a rattan recliner and matching pillow top queen size sleeper sofa in the living room, dining table for two, and king size bed in the bedroom.

It's shaded by ancient Australian pine trees and has a comfortable shared screened porch for a front-row view of the sunsets and stars. With the windows open at night, you can hear the surf!

Walk directly out the screen porch door, and down to the beach--no streets to cross. Or, sit out on the patio and enjoy your coffee and newspaper, or cocktails. Our guests tell us that the best part of the patio area, (besides the view) is it's size-- plenty of room for spreading out.

We are located a block away from the Cafe on the Beach, convenient for all-you-can-eat pancake breakfasts, quick lunches, and relaxing dinners. The beach-front playground is a block and a half away. Take the free trolley and see the rest of the island.

If you need more room, the other side of the duplex, VRBO 77482 is available. Also see our other VRBO listings on the same property, VRBO 82848 and VRBO 738184.

About Alice Torres Sutton

Hi! Our family has owned this property since 1971. My grandparents built it as their retirement home, and now it belongs to us. My mom, Gladys, is on the left in this photo, and that's me, Alice, on the right. Mom passed away in 2014, but her spirit of hospitality continues. I live up in Tampa, and visit the beach every weekend with my husband and family.

Alice Torres Sutton purchased this cottage in 1983

Why Alice Torres Sutton chose Holmes Beach

Our family chose to purchase the Cottage because there was no way we could resist! The property is huge, and has the most magnificent view of the beach, especially at sunset, and of course, we loved the neighbors (my grandparents). We live in Tampa, but visit the Island every weekend, and it is a quick trip, about an hour. The Island has an unspoiled small-town charm--like Mayberry but with sand and sun! No matter how short your stay on the Island, it will refresh your spirit.

What makes this cottage unique

Our cottage offers simple peace and quiet, with sunny or shady spots on the patio facing the beach. The patios are nestled in a native Florida meadow, complete with blanket flowers, railroad vine, and sea oats-- it's a trip to the past, when life was much simpler. When families visit, the patio area is a favorite of the older crowd, since it is shielded from the wind and sun, and it has a horseshoe court. The screened porch is a great place for morning coffee and the newspaper, afternoon snacks, or evening refreshments.

More than we could have ever imagined!

  • 5 of 5

The experience we had with Alice and her cottage was something my son and I will always remember. We were going thru a tough time, at 15 years old his best friend took his own life, and we felt staying on the beach would be healing. And it was more than we could have ever hoped...Alice was amazing from our first conversation, so accommodating when I needed a last minute rental and an early check-in, so caring about making us comfortable. We knew we would be staying outside mostly, so the size of the cottage was not a concern for us, but you could feel that it was full of love. And it had EVERYTHING we needed! We had just come from another rental that had minimal toilet paper, or basics...not that it is a requirement but it’s nice to be able to settle in before running to a store. Alice had everything! From dish soap, to bar soap, beach towels to beach chairs, everything we needed. It felt like we were family instead of renters. Then upon returning from a walk, as Alice was in town that day, we found a welcome package on our door, with a beautiful handwritten note welcoming us! The white sand beach, the seashells, and the sunset view from this property is second to none. We picnicked at the edge of the property at sunset each night, having plenty of room to prepare our meals in the kitchen and a table for two indoors, we always opted for the beautiful yard with its lovely tables and giant pines, or the beach. On our first afternoon we were lucky enough to run into Alice taking in the view, and got to share a big hug of thankfulness. I don’t think she knew exactly how much we needed to be in her place at this time, but she was so just as sweet as we imagined. The bed was comfortable as was the beautiful furniture (the pictures don’t do it justice really), it was chilly when we arrived but the furnace worked like a charm, unlike the other property we stayed at that week. The convenience of the free Anna Maria Island Trolley, the all you can eat $5.99 pancakes and great coffee at the Beach Cafe all steps away at Manatee beach, the conveniences of shopping you need close by but it was still amazingly calm and quiet at the property. I can’t say enough about our stay. It was definitely heart healing, and I know this cottage was part of the reason why. And I guarantee we WILL be back!!

Warmest regards., Christine and Teo (Manitoba, Canada)

Perfect location, Awesome service, Loved it!!!!!

First it was very easy to communicate with Alice about the property and booking was easy

Check in was very easy. I don't know if I've just had bad luck on other stays I've had in anna maria both on vrbo and through rental companies, but I usually always have a problem. No problems this time. Went exactly as I was told it would go.

Location of the cottage was great. Right on the beach, no streets to cross, just put on your flip flops and head on down. The property sits a little low so you are hidden from people at the beach while sitting on the porch or patio. View of the water through the sea oats was outstanding. It's just over the bridge from the mainland so it was super easy to get to.

The cottage was clean. It had a fully stocked kitchen. Everything you needed at the beach was right there and in good shape. Chairs, umbrella, towels. Bath towels were like brand new not cheap and scratchy. AC worked great and even in late October I was happy about that. There was a big flat screen tv that probably worked just fine but we were very happy to not find time to turn it on :-) I can tell you the blender worked just fine!

It was a pleasure to meet the owner Alice. She stopped by to welcome us and made it feel like we were staying at a friends place.

Well definetly be coming back. I like to think I'm a value hunter and I feel like we got a whole lot for our money.

Thanks Alice we love your place and appreciate you having us!

P.s. We even recieved a post card when we got back thanking us for our stay! Very awesome she took the time to do that.

Owner's Response: Hi! Thank you for taking the time to write such a fantastic and detailed review. I am so happy that you enjoyed our cottage! We love to share it, and think of all of our guests as our friends. We shopped for quite a while trying to find the right towels-- I am over the moon that you noticed-- it means that our hard work paid off! Glad you enjoyed the blender too-- we pictured our guests enjoying those frosty frozen drinks out on the beachfront patios at sunset. Please come stay with us again- you were terrific guests! Happy Thanksgiving! Alice
