Our log cabin is a labor of love. The original log cabin was first built in Southern Georgia in 1865 by a woman and her slave for the husband coming home from the Civil war. We purchased it from the landowners who wanted to tear it down. We painstakingly dissassembled it (numbering every log-you can still see these tags today) and stored it in a relative's barn in Georgia until we found the perfect location for it on a mountain creek in North Carolina. We had eyed this property for many years as we visited a friend who had a cabin on the mountain. The property (and surrounding 30 acres) had been owned by one family for over 40 years and happened to go for sale at auction. It was bought by our friend's uncle and subdivided into 8 home-sites. We had our pick of our favorite location close to the stream which was also the site of the original hometead on the property. We reassembled the cabin as close to the creek as possible (it was the original dogtrot design made entirely of heart pine), added an 8 foot wide covered porch to the entire front of the cabin (to get the most enjoyment out of the stream) and added a bathroom, kitchen and sitting area to the back.
This past year we have added a second story with a master suite and additional bathroom.
As native Floridians, we have always wanted a place to escape the heat in the summer and enjoy the change of seasons the rest of the year. North Carolina is perfect for both of these.
John Harrell purchased this cabin in 1984
We have visited the Sylva area for 30+ years and feel like it is our second home. We plan to retire there for part of the year so we have furnished the cabin with all of the comforts we would want to have.
There is nowhere we would rather be than sitting in the swing overlooking the creek in the summer or in front of the stone fireplace in cold weather. It is truly one of the most relaxing places you'll ever be. The scenery is constantly changing depending upon the season and the time of day. The creek can be seen and heard from most rooms of the house. The new Master bedroom has views on three sides from the bed.
We had a great time celebrating my 30th. The house was immaculate and thoughtfully decorated. We loved the big kitchen table, perfect for dinner with friends. Close enough to smokey mountains to get a long day hike in, but less than 3 hours from Atlanta. Would gladly stay here again!
We could not have asked for anything more during our stay here. Great location, very secluded, yet within about 30 -40 minute drive to Cherokee, Bryson City, Maggie Valley, Waynesville, Blue Ridge Parkway, etc etc. Sylva and Dillsboro were also great little 'old' towns to explore also. We loved learning a little about the history of the 1860's dogtrot cabin from John. The creek was so relaxing, morning day and night. The clawfoot tub, and river rock shower were great bonuses. The cabin was well stocked with everything we needed and was very clean when we arrived. It's in a very quiet area, pretty much end of road and no through traffic. The description was perfect. On a scale of 1 to 10, this cabin and it's owners definitely get a 10+++++++++.

We stayed at the cabin early June, 2016. My brother and his wife, two children joined us (my family of 4), we had plenty of room for all of us! The cabin is decorated rustically and was very charming. My children really enjoyed the tire swing and catching fireflies in the evenings around the campfire, truly magical! We all enjoyed the beautiful private setting, there are two homes within close proximity but still far away enough to offer ample privacy. The creek was especially relaxing, but we did see several snakes around the creek, so pls be mindful if you have young kids. We visited nearby Cherokee and enjoyed downtown Sylva. You can also view Elk in the wild at the Smoky Mountain Nat Park nearby! Lots of wonderful restaurants, a must try is the BBQ shack in Dillsboro! Delicious. All in all this place was amazing and I could not have enjoyed my vacation any more anywhere else! We plan on making this a yearly trip for our families :) Thanks to John & Michele who were very kind and responsive to any questions or concerns that I had during the process of renting. I would highly reccomend visiting this beautiful hidden gem.
It was spectacular. Had everything and more that we needed to celebrate my daughter's graduation.
Beautiful view, nice porch with rocking chairs where you can admire the creek.
The cabin is fully equipped.
This cabin is a 20 minute drive from downtown Sylva. You can feel its rich history when you walk in. It is decorated with its history in mind, along with true comforts and patchwork quilts. The cabin takes you away from every day and transports you to a time when things move slower and people stop to listen to the creek from every room of the house. The kitchen area is spacious and rustic with a pie cabinet and a lovely farm table that seats at least 8. The cabin has modern comfort features including an amazing shower, laundry facilities and WiFi. The stereo can be heard in every room too and the radio station plays a fantastic array of music. The cabin is large so there is also privacy. The 2nd floor deck was a delightful place for a morning cup of coffee. The cabin is definitely a pleasing place. My children and dogs loved it too. The cabin was clean and ready upon our arrival with plenty of towels and the fans were on welcoming us. The temperature was lovely upon arrival, no stuffiness or need to "air out". There is no A/C but you don't miss it, the fans are plenty and the windows open allow you to enjoy the location. You will sleep well and feel refreshed. I would bring some laundry soap, and prepare to wash dishes by hand as there is not a dishwasher. The hot water is quick and ready. There are tools for pup pick up and outdoor fun. The tire swing will take you back in time. This place has some very special magic-come see for yourself.
Zip lining is nearby, along with horseback riding and of course the Blue Ridge Parkway.
This cabin was great for us to be close for a family reunion in Sylva & Tuckaseegee. We also went on the Smoky Mountain Railroad which was fun. Two couples & 2 singles fit well, as long as everyone knows most of the rooms are open to each other.
