Overview

About the property

2 bedroom, 1 bath cabin with hottub (sleeps 6)

Camp Neal is your home away from home. Our renters return over and over again, treating this cabin as their own. It was not originally set up as a rental, so it doesn't feel like one. It is a 2 bedroom, 1 bath cabin built in 2006, with the original foundation and fireplace from 1926!! It has a modern feel with a rustic edge...and has all the comforts of home...ipod/iphone docks for music, flat screen with DirecTv PREMIUM and NFL ticket, Xbox with games, books and plenty of DVDs. Under the deck is a great outdoor hot tub. There are sleds with a hilly open lot next door! The cabin sleeps 6 with a queen bed in the master, a twin and a set of bunk beds in the second bedroom. The couch folds to a full size bed as well. The dishes, appliances and linens are all nice...much unlike other rentals. Make Camp Neal your home away from home near the slopes, the lake and the Big Bear Village!

About Kelly Neal

We live in Riverside, CA and love the beach and the mountains. We have two kids under age ten, four dogs, three cats and lots of fish! We love skiing at Snow Summit and boating on the lake in summer. We had our cabin for a few years before we started renting to friends and family. We are now expanding to a new VRBO family!

Kelly Neal purchased this cabin in 2006

Why Kelly Neal chose Big Bear Lake

Growing up in Orange County we have been coming up to Big Bear Lake to ski and hike our whole lives. We just love it in every season. Most SoCalians think big bear lake in winter only, but we almost prefer it in spring, summer and fall!!! The lake is great in the off-winter months and every weekend in summer has some sort of party or festival going!

What makes this cabin unique

We loved that Camp Neal was new construction when we bought in 2006. Most of the other homes were very old. This one was brand new, with the exception of the fireplace which was from the original 1926 cabin. That fireplace gives it the ambiance that is just what everyone wants in a Big Bear cabin. It really is incredible. Plus, we love how we converted the under the deck area into a Zen Den where the hottub is. We have enclosed it with outdoor blinds for privacy.

Too dark, otherwise OK

  • 3 of 5

We were a bit disappointed with this rental. It was our first family trip with our twin toddlers and I did a ton of research beforehand to find a place that was somewhat baby friendly, which this place seemed to be. But when we got there it was one problem after another. The baby gate at the top of the stairs was broken! Had to try to block them other ways which was a hassle. The high chair, which is a hook-on style, was so filthy we couldn't use it until we cleaned it a bit. It's quite annoying to have to pay a $100 cleaning fee when the place isn't that clean. Found a tumbler in the jacuzzi, dead bugs, recycling hadn't been taken out. WiFi was spotty, had to reset the router multiple times. And it was so dark in there, which was a bummer, since the weather was so sunny and gorgeous.

However, we did love the deck and played out there a lot, to get our sunshine and fresh air. Bathroom was quite nice, had a great bath with my girls. Had some charming elements. Beds were pretty comfy. Kids room with bunkbed is adorable and had lots of cute dolls. Jacuzzi was awesome (aside from tumbler). Host was nice and responsive. We had a nice time but as an exhausted twin mom I really would have liked a smoother experience.

Owner's Response: I am sorry you didn't have a great stay. You had not mentioned at all any time in our correspondence about the cabin not being clean. The little baby gate and hook on baby high chair aren't used often so the cleaning staff doesn't take them out to check them. This is the first I have heard of the cabin not being clean otherwise. Had I known there was any issue with cabin (bugs) or hot tub (tumbler) cleanliness I would have sent someone right away but it was not mentioned. I went to extra effort to make sure you got NFL ticket on the firestick, and you had said the firestick was working the whole time (meaning the wifi was fine) but couldn't log on from a personal device. I was just there today and logged on using two personal devices without trouble, using the existing password. As I said before, I think you mis-typed the password. I kept the wifi on the firetv for 4 hours today without a glitch. Perhaps spectrum had an issue that weekend. Finally, I am not sure about the cabin being 'dark'. There are windows in all the rooms. Perhaps it was cloudy? There are 5 decent sized windows in what is really a three room house. When the blinds are tilted open and the shade in the kids room up, it is quite bright. The patio in front is covered to provide shade and protection from rain so I suppose that reduces light but I have never noticed that before. I have removed the gate as it was just an extra anyways (most decks are not baby proof) and brought the high hair home so from now on people can just bring their own if needed. The cleaning fee, at 95$, is 20% below average for big bear. Again, I am sorry you didn't have a smooth experience.

Exactly what you see! Cute little place for a couple people and a dog. :)

Everything about our trip went smoothly. Owners were very communicative and helpful. It IS smaller than most cabins in the area, but still very pleasant and comfortable. 10/10 would stay here again. Thanks for everything!!

PROS:

*Owner friendly and VERY responsive to messages

*very kind to offer an extra day for a special rate

*gave us an awesome deal on bringing our 2 Shih-Tzus

*cabin fully stocked though we had to buy extra tp, trash bags, and hand soap...but not a big deal

*very clean

*hot tub (we didn't end up using it...but was nice to have)

*no problem getting our deposit back in about a week

CONS:

*THE ONLY REASON I GAVE IT 3 STARS was that when I first went to HomeAway to do a search for a cabin, the FIRST thing I entered was that I wanted air conditioning. About 7 cabins popped up with AC. Come to find out when I was signing the contract a couple of days before our stay it said that there wasn't AC in the cabin. I probably could have backed out of the rental right then, but decided to give it a chance. We rented it for 4 days. Big Bear was in high 80's low 90's, and cabin retained the heat of 77-78 degrees during the day and into the middle of the night even though it dropped to approximately 57 degrees at night. This was with all of the windows wide open, box fan, and ceiling fan on. None of us could sleep the first 2 days it was so hot inside. Afer numerous texts between me and owner, we put fans in windows which helped blow hot air out/suck cool air in at night. This helped tremendously so everything went smooth at night the next 2 days. (The cabin did stay about 77-78 during the day even with the fans in the windows.) BUT, the cabin listing should be changed to show NO AC.

*Neighbors outside lights shine through the back bedroom window blinds at night.

*piss ant problem around sink...we ended up eating out instead of cooking...but this isn't the first cabin in Big Bear that we've rented with an ant problem

*no place to hang clothes, but there is a dresser with 2 empty drawers to place clothes in

All in all, I would stay there again in the fall or winter, and again our stay would have received another star if it actually had AC like the listing said.

Owner's Response: Hello! Thanks for the kind words. Like I told you before in an email, I have never had my cabin listed with air conditioning. For all of the amenities on VRBO you hover the mouse over it and it reveals the amenities. Mine says 'NO AC but has ceiling fans all you ever need in big bear'. Not sure what else I can do to change their search besides stating NO AC. I am sorry it was an unusually warm week in big bear but happy you enjoyed your stay otherwise.

Wonderful Winter Wonderland Sledding Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We got so lucky renting while it was snowing for 2 days...we had so much fresh powder right outside the private sledding hill, that are kids and us ended up never leaving the cabin and playing and sledding everyday for the 4 days we rented the cabin. This is a well equipped cabin, charming and quaint. Thank you Kelly for a wonderful winter wonderland experience. We will definitely come back again!
