About the property

Cabin, 2 Bedrooms Sleeps 4

This architect designed split-level cabin, 'Mountain Laurel', is situated on a ridgetop at an elevation of 2900 feet at Gateway Mountain, a 3000 acre gated nature preserve and mountain residential community. (see Gateway link below.)

The cabin is nestled on almost four acres among large wild mountain laurels surrounded by a hardwood forest with pastoral valleys and distant mountain views. Quiet surroundings allow our guests to experience the woods and all of her creatures with no distractions from the noise typically found in a city or from traffic.

The cabin features two bedrooms, two baths, and a family room with a sleeper queen couch. On the upper level is the large open living, dining, and kitchen area, with a woodstove and an outside deck with a gas grill; the master bedroom with king bed, bathroom with whirl pool tub and walk-in closet. On the lower level is the guest bedroom and full bathroom, a family room with a big screen TV and both open to an adjacent private outside patio. There is also a single car garage.

You will sleep like a baby in the peace and quiet and awaken to the sun and to mountain views that you will savor and remember forever.

Special features include a slated entry hall, wood flooring, wood ceilings, windows everywhere, marble tiled bathrooms, granite countertops and custom kitchen cabinets. All appliances are Kitchen-Aid. The cabin is well appointed, completely furnished and equipped and includes a washer and a dryer and a cappuccino/espresso machine.

Conveniently located near Asheville and Black Mountain, in Old Fort, Gateway Mountain is an easy drive just 7 miles off Interstate 40, which situates you midway between the large city of Asheville with the famous Biltmore House and Mast General Store, 29 miles away; and, 15 miles from the resort town of Black Mountain with its quaint antique and gift shops and wonderful restaurants..

Traveling south, a 30 minute scenic drive takes you to Lake Lure where you'll find family fun with a swimming beach, new water park, scenic boat tours, twilight dinner cruises, paddle boat and pontoon boat rentals. There are also several beautiful golf courses in the area.

It's 45 minutes to historic downtown Hendersonville and the nearby Flat Rock Playhouse. Also nearby is Chimney Rock Park, Mount Pisgah, and Mount Mitchell State Parks. On the Gateway Mountain property, visit our wonderful waterfall and picnic area, two lakes and a stocked fishpond and hiking trails.

'Mountain Laurel' provides a serene environment for a quiet get away from life's hustle and bustle, and all the mentioned sites and activities within a short driving distance. Relax and enjoy your time 'up in the clouds' or go the 'touristy' route, whichever is your pleasure. Truly the best of both worlds.

About Lynne Desterre

Tim and I bought this property in May of 2006 after a trip to Asheville in the fall of 2005. We live in Land O Lakes Florida and wanted a get away for those hot summer months. I am retired from the food service business and Tim is still very much in the food service business. We love to travel and are lucky enough to have a condo on the beach here in Florida which we also rent.

Lynne Desterre purchased this cabin in 2006

Why Lynne Desterre chose Blue Ridge Mountains

Although we love Florida, we wanted a place where we could escape from the summer heat or even the hurricanes! As soon as we arrive, a feeling of peace overcomes us. It's impossible to be uptight here - it's the ultimate place to relax.

What makes this cabin unique

We love the complete silence except for what is supposed to be there. Even in the hottest part of the summer, it is 10 degrees cooler than the town of Old Fort below. We enjoy taking road trips and are always excited to explore a new part of western North Carolina. It's truly a beautiful state and has mountains, beaches, water and more.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We really enjoyed your cabin. It was very nice. My husband saw three deer, that was the highlight of his trip. We loved the ceilings and your granite countertops. There was some beautiful detail. It has a very homey feeling. The only thing I might suggest is maybe some blinds or curtains in the downstairs bedroom. Even though this place is very private, you get the feeling that someone could look in on you at anytime. Thank you for sharing your cabin with us. David and Khiannon

Beautiful but very remote setting. Had everything we needed.

Great home. Just be sure to know that you are not going to want to go back and forth during the day. We planned activities for the whole day and then came back and spent quiet evenings at the home. Very relaxing

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to post a review. It is much appreciated. The house is 6 1/2 miles from the interstate so not sure I would describe it as very remote but it sure feels that way while you are there!

Stunning Mountain Views

  • 5 of 5

I booked this great place in the mountains of NC several weeks ago and stayed from 4/19/17 to 4/22/17. Had no idea that the views would be a thousand times better in person than they are on the web. The owners literally thought of everything when decorating and provided every little item one could possibly need. Situated on the top of Gateway Mountain, it is a gated community located about 25 minutes from Black Mountain and Lake Lure/Chimney Rock. The views on the way up and down are equally stunning. Roads are a little narrow and curvy but no big deal. If you are looking for a relaxing mountain getaway with unbelievable views do not hesitate to book this place!! You will be glad you did!

Amazing rental in the mountains!!

  • 5 of 5

My mom and I recently stayed here for a mother/daughter get away. So glad we chose to rent this place, as VRBO has never steered me wrong . LOL, I personally didn't mind the winding roads up the mountain to get to the house, but I can see how some might find it a little daunting. Anyhow, this place was perfect. The house had a very "homey" feel to it and we did not need to buy a thing (minus the groceries). This house was very well stocked and very clean. It was a little chilly (in the 30's) at night when we stayed so we didn't get to enjoy the outside deck, but there was plenty of space inside to enjoy the beautiful views. The house was just the right distance for our day trips. My mom and I went to Chimney Rock, Grandfather Mountain, Valle Crucis & Mast General store, Black Mountain, Linville Caverns, and Blue Ridge Parkway to name a few. Never did we have a bad drive, scenery was amazing. We even had snow, which is so exciting for someone from south Louisiana!! My mom and I enjoyed ourselves so much and plan to take another trip here next year. Definitely recommend staying here. No regret!!

Very peaceful & beautiful foliage

  • 5 of 5

The Mountain Laurel house is a perfect getaway from the city life. It's surrounded by mountains and you will see lots of wild life. We vacationed there Nov 15th-18th and the foliage throughout the community was beautiful. We don't see the tree colors change in Florida, so that was a treat! The house is clean and stocked with all your needs. We went to dinner in neighboring town, Black Mountain? Hiked the Catawba Falls in the morning, which is really close by. We visited the beautiful Baltimore Estate for the Christmas evening tour, it was unreal and I highly suggest going anytime of the year. The winery there was fabulous!! Went to Asheville a few times (approx 35min drive), to join in on some of the brewery tours/tastings. Went to Grove Park Inn, and had lunch on the terrace, the views there are gorgeous!

We would recommend the Mountain Laurel house and hope to be back for a visit one day.

Happy Thanksgiving and Cheers,

Crystal & Stephen (St. Petersburg, FL)

Beautiful home in a lovely setting

  • 5 of 5

My friend and I rented this home for a four night girl friends getaway to enjoy the fall leaves in the area and all along the blue ridge parkway. The home is beautifully appointed with all of the amenities of being at your own home. It was lovely to come back to such a calm, peaceful setting at the end of a long day of driving, hiking and sightseeing. We would enjoy sitting and reading on the outside patio or reading by a fire in the wood-burning stove! I would definitely consider staying here again.
