About the property

Cabin, 2 Bedrooms Sleeps 4

This architect designed split-level cabin, 'Mountain Laurel', is situated on a ridgetop at an elevation of 2900 feet at Gateway Mountain, a 3000 acre gated nature preserve and mountain residential community. (see Gateway link below.)

The cabin is nestled on almost four acres among large wild mountain laurels surrounded by a hardwood forest with pastoral valleys and distant mountain views. Quiet surroundings allow our guests to experience the woods and all of her creatures with no distractions from the noise typically found in a city or from traffic.

The cabin features two bedrooms, two baths, and a family room with a sleeper queen couch. On the upper level is the large open living, dining, and kitchen area, with a woodstove and an outside deck with a gas grill; the master bedroom with king bed, bathroom with whirl pool tub and walk-in closet. On the lower level is the guest bedroom and full bathroom, a family room with a big screen TV and both open to an adjacent private outside patio. There is also a single car garage.

You will sleep like a baby in the peace and quiet and awaken to the sun and to mountain views that you will savor and remember forever.

Special features include a slated entry hall, wood flooring, wood ceilings, windows everywhere, marble tiled bathrooms, granite countertops and custom kitchen cabinets. All appliances are Kitchen-Aid. The cabin is well appointed, completely furnished and equipped and includes a washer and a dryer and a cappuccino/espresso machine.

Conveniently located near Asheville and Black Mountain, in Old Fort, Gateway Mountain is an easy drive just 7 miles off Interstate 40, which situates you midway between the large city of Asheville with the famous Biltmore House and Mast General Store, 29 miles away; and, 15 miles from the resort town of Black Mountain with its quaint antique and gift shops and wonderful restaurants..

Traveling south, a 30 minute scenic drive takes you to Lake Lure where you'll find family fun with a swimming beach, new water park, scenic boat tours, twilight dinner cruises, paddle boat and pontoon boat rentals. There are also several beautiful golf courses in the area.

It's 45 minutes to historic downtown Hendersonville and the nearby Flat Rock Playhouse. Also nearby is Chimney Rock Park, Mount Pisgah, and Mount Mitchell State Parks. On the Gateway Mountain property, visit our wonderful waterfall and picnic area, two lakes and a stocked fishpond and hiking trails.

'Mountain Laurel' provides a serene environment for a quiet get away from life's hustle and bustle, and all the mentioned sites and activities within a short driving distance. Relax and enjoy your time 'up in the clouds' or go the 'touristy' route, whichever is your pleasure. Truly the best of both worlds.

About Lynne Desterre

Tim and I bought this property in May of 2006 after a trip to Asheville in the fall of 2005. We live in Land O Lakes Florida and wanted a get away for those hot summer months. I am retired from the food service business and Tim is still very much in the food service business. We love to travel and are lucky enough to have a condo on the beach here in Florida which we also rent.

Lynne Desterre purchased this cabin in 2006

Why Lynne Desterre chose Old Fort

Although we love Florida, we wanted a place where we could escape from the summer heat or even the hurricanes! As soon as we arrive, a feeling of peace overcomes us. It's impossible to be uptight here - it's the ultimate place to relax.

What makes this cabin unique

We love the complete silence except for what is supposed to be there. Even in the hottest part of the summer, it is 10 degrees cooler than the town of Old Fort below. We enjoy taking road trips and are always excited to explore a new part of western North Carolina. It's truly a beautiful state and has mountains, beaches, water and more.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We really enjoyed your cabin. It was very nice. My husband saw three deer, that was the highlight of his trip. We loved the ceilings and your granite countertops. There was some beautiful detail. It has a very homey feeling. The only thing I might suggest is maybe some blinds or curtains in the downstairs bedroom. Even though this place is very private, you get the feeling that someone could look in on you at anytime. Thank you for sharing your cabin with us. David and Khiannon

Wonderful mountain home, we did not want to leave.

My wife and I spent the month of August at Lynne's beautiful Gateway Mountain home in Old Fort, it was perfect in every way. Such a warm comfy house with a beautiful deck and fantastic views. The master bedroom was so cozy and we loved sitting in the reading chair with our favorite book. The lower level was perfect for our friends and family that visited us during our stay with bedroom, bathroom and TV room. The home was very well stocked and she even left us a nice bottle of wine. The deck was my favorite spot though, I loved exercising out there every morning and then relaxing with a good book and a glass of wine and some snacks in the evening. We were only about 30 minutes from Asheville and we made numerous trips into town for dinner, music and shopping. (Loved West Asheville) The home is just about at the top of Gateway Mountain in Old Fort, about 15 minutes from I-40 or just take Old Fort Road if you prefer the scenic route. Gateway Mountain is a gated community of about 3000 heavily forested acres. We saw many birds, wild turkeys, and deer. (Did not see any bear) Lynne was great to work with and she was always accessible if we had any questions. We loved it so much and did not want to leave. We highly recommend this vacation home to anyone looking to visit the Western NC area.

Wonderful views

  • 5 of 5

My wife and daughter just got back from a 3 day weekend stay at this cabin and had such a wonderful time. Other than the breath taking views from a very large deck the cabin itself was set up perfectly. My favorite part was how secluded the cabin is and the feel of having the views all to yourself. The cabin was very clean and the king size bed slept very comfortable. I wouldn't change a thing and look forward to booking another trip in the future.

Solitude at it's finest. Beautiful views.

After a hectic 2 weeks prior to our vacation, this is what the doctor ordered. We had a very nice, quiet and relaxing time. This chalet wants for nothing, it is very well equipped. Also a great selection of movies. The waterfall in the Gateway was beautiful and we enjoyed strolling around the gated community.

Quit searching. Idyllic mountain retreat.

Had a great 3 day vacation. This house had everything we wanted. Very well maintained. Owners very responsive. We lost a house key, but a quick call promptly resolved the issue. Great back deck with an awesome view. Remote, yet close enough to Asheville, Chimney Rock, lake Lure, wineries, trout fishing, and hiking. Once we got there though, we were content to just hang out around the house. Clean, up to date, well furnished, pantry had plenty of condiments, and kitchen has everything you need. Very quiet and secluded. Already planning another trip.
