Guestbook comments from the manager

I just wanted to let you know what a great time my family had at the Cottage this past week. The house is spacious enough for all of us and we were able to enjoy dinners together, a bonfire and a movie each night. The lake is nice and quiet and perfect for our crew. We used the pontoon, kayaks and paddle boat quite a bit. The kids all slept upstairs in the bunk room. My niece’s 3 and a half year old daughter cried when we had to leave. We booked on a fishing charter, went to the sand dunes and enjoyed the downtown Traverse City for Friday Night Lights.

We are already considering coming back next year.

Sitting on the dock was so relaxing, just watching the wildlife go by. Love the new deck chairs there.

The place is beautiful, big and clean. Great for a family or a mix of families with 3 double bedrooms and a dorm for the kids.

Location was perfect for my DRW Training Camp duties.

Jim, as always, is a great host! Looking forward to next September already!

GO WINGS ! ! !

Owner's Response: Anne you put your stay at my cottage in such visual and describing words you must be a writer. Thanks for all the accolades but the biggest tribute to my cottage is that you’ve stayed there before. And I’m glad you’re coming back!! Go Wings!!!

The house was OK, but run down and not maintained very well.

  • 3 of 5

The location of the house and lake access was good. The condition of the house was a little disappointing, considering the price we paid. The whole house needs a deep cleaning and repairs. The pontoon boat is old and decrepit. We had a great time in the area. Lots of things to do. The lake was nice, although small. It was good for kids.

Owner's Response: Gary I'm sorry your stay wasn't as good as desired. I take great pride in trying to make everyone's stay very enjoyable but I let you down. Your review will push me to be better. Of my 50 reviews, 45 people gave my cottage a 5-star review and my overall average is 4.9. The family that stayed the week before you gave me a 5-star and the family that stayed the week after emailed me that it was one of the best vacations they'd ever had. But their review couldn't be posted because they didn't book it on VRBO/Homeaway. As for the pontoon the 7-day rental price of $395.00, which includes two kayaks, is very fair. That breaks down to just over $55.00 a day. A lot of places charge you $395.00 for four hours. Again I'm sorry!

All fun. The lake is small, but clean and clear. Great for kids. Lots of bass and panfish. I give it 5 stars as a family cottage.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for the positive review. Our lake is good for fishing. And another thing nice about it is that there's usually little traffic on it. I'm really happy your family had a great time and I'm looking forward to your return.

Quiet, very enjoyable place

  • 4 of 5

Grandson caught 11 bass the first day on the lake (catch & release). Location is good easy to move between places around Traverse City. Enjoyed the fire pit on the deck. Was well supplied, the owner took special care to see that we were happy.

Owner's Response: Duane thanks for the nice review! Our small lake has good fishing. Someone once caught a 42-inch pike! I feel the same way as you about our cottage location, away from the hustle bustle of the city but only 4-5 miles from the main drag. I'm glad your family had a great time! I hope you comeback! Thanks Jim S.

Great place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great early fall stay at The Family Fun Retreat. We were doing a family get together for a 45th anniversary. The house was the perfect size - we had 6 adults and 4 kids (ages 3 up to 13).

It was nice to have quiet hours, as there was a bachelor party going on next door during our stay, yet the nights were still quiet regardless.

Jim was super friendly by phone and email, we didn't have any trouble getting in and settled, and everything was as advertised. The only complaint came from the 9 year old who is a light sleeper, and he said the bunk beds were a little squeaky when the other kids rolled around. Otherwise, we were all very comfortable and had a great stay - even though we chose to vacation when it was a bit cold for water sport. We did other things out in Traverse City for entertainment. The house is conveniently located but it was nice to be staying outside of the city.
