About the property

2 Bedrooms including Loft, 1.5 Baths (Sleeps 4). Bluff Top Swimming Pool & Spa.

The Cove House in Timber Cove offers a dramatic and romantic experience you will savor for a lifetime. Intimate enough for the honeymoon of your dreams yet spacious enough for two couples. Relax and toast to your good fortune in a rare bluff top swimming pool and spa overlooking a rugged ocean cove, View whales, dolphins, ospreys, harbor seals and wildlife from every room of the house. We spot whales all year round. Our location is perfect to witness the gray whale migrations, they have even swam into our cove with their babies. The harbor seals nurse their pups on the rocks just below the house. Designed by John Cook, the Cove House is constructed entirely of redwood and glass. Snuggle up next to the soaring wood burning fireplace with a glass of wine. A candle lit table with a view takes on a whole new meaning in our home, The moon dances across the cove to miles of whitewater coastline. The beautifully appointed master bedroom with king size bed opens out to the oceanfront garden, pool area and outdoor shower. Enjoy stars and sweeping ocean views from the queen bed in the loft accessed by a spiral staircase. Flat screen TVs await you after a day of exploring the Sonoma Coast, wine tasting, beachcombing or simply doing absolutely nothing. Awake to the roaring surf as the mist lifts off of the rugged coastline. The smell of the surf mixes with your coffee as you curl up in the big leather chair. South facing floor to ceiling windows and cathedral ceilings allow the warm morning sunshine to fill the open and spacious living room and dining room. Don't be surprised if a pelican is sitting on the large upper deck off of the living room to greet you. Seagulls, hawks, ravens, herons and seabirds preform aerial ballets while ospreys dive into the surf emerging with the catch of the day. The Cove House sits on a very private one acre forested lot with redwoods, pine, firs and coastal flowers. It is the perfect place to unplug, rejuvenate and reconnect with each other. Turn on the music, pour a glass of wine and finally open that book you have been meaning to get lost in.

You don't have to take just our word for how spectacular this location and house are. Ansel Adams photographed our cove on one of his frequent visits to Timber Cove. The renowned architect John Cook wrote that the Cove House is an example of some of his best work. We are only the second owners and this is the first time the Cove House has ben available for rent.

The Sonoma North Coast offers a wide variety of activities if you wish to get out and explore. Kayaking, diving, wine tasting, golf, fishing, hiking and parks filled with redwoods are all a short drive away. The Timber Cove Inn can be seen from the house. You can enjoy live music and fine dining there. We love going to the local farmers market on Sunday mornings, We buy delicious breads, homemade spring rolls and freshly made cheese and take a drive through the redwoods on the back roads before returning to our retreat.

You should be aware that the house is two stories. The living room, kitchen, dining room, large deck and half bath are on the entry level. The loft is above the kitchen overlooking the dining room and balcony. The master bedroom, separate full bath, garden, patios, outdoor shower, swimming pool, and spa are located on the lower level. The nearest town with full service grocery stores is Gualala about 25 minutes north. We are not kidding when we say unplug. There is no cell phone service at the Cove House or anywhere in Timber Cove. We do provide phones with free local and long distance calling in the US and Canada. If you bring a computer, notebook or pad, we do have free wireless DSL internet service. There is DirecTV with HBO on both flat screen televisions, a DVD/CD player. We provide some DVDs, lots of CDs, board games, a chess set and jigsaw puzzles for your enjoyment.

If cooking is one of your passions, then the Cove House is for you! Take advantage of Sonoma County's bountiful farm to table produce, sea foods and organic meats. Not only does the kitchen offer fantastic views, it has been updated with stainless steel appliances including a 5 burner cooktop, double ovens, full-size refrigerator/freezer, dishwasher and microwave. The small appliances include coffee maker, coffee grinder, electric tea kettle, blender, slow cooker, and toaster. We provide spices, oils, pots, pans, bake ware, dishes, glassware, cooking utensils, serving utensils, paper goods, foil and plastic wrap. A full kitchen inventory is available upon request.

Our professional hospitality staff expertly cleans, sanitizes and prepares the home prior to your arrival. The carpet is brand new and is vacuumed between each booking. No smoking and no pets have been allowed in the house. Pet allergies are not an issue. Big fluffy robes, plenty of towels and luxury bedding are provided. Guests also have access to a washer and dryer.

The Cove House is perched atop an eighty foot cliff. Most of the property is unfenced. Wildlife wander freely and frequently through the yards. We do not make any exceptions to our NO PETS ALLOWED POLICY. Even small dogs will scare away our seals and wildlife for weeks.

Please feel free to contact us to request more information or have any special requests. This home is very special and it is our pleasure to share it with you.

About Diane

We are Diane and Chris, native Californians who discovered Timber Cove while we were attending Long Beach State nearly 40 years ago. Much of our time was spent in Cardiff by the Sea, a beach community near San Diego. Chris taught Cabinetmaking & Furniture Technology at Palomar College and Diane's background is in real estate. We've traveled throughout Europe, Japan and China studying woodworking, architecture and timber framing. Now that we have retired we have come full circle back to Timber Cove. We are convinced that it is one of the most beautiful spots on earth! We enjoy working on projects together and are having fun leaving our mark on the Cove House. We are also car enthusiasts. Often we compete against each other in car shows which make for some interesting drives home.

Diane purchased this house in 2013

Why Diane chose North Coast

We have been tent camping on our Timber Cove property for over 30 years. In 2011 we threw out the tent and purchased the Cliff House. We rented to vacation renters until we retired and moved up full time in December 2012. We loved sharing this magical place with others who can appreciate its unique beauty. To our amazement the Cove House came available and we were able to become its new stewards, Now you can experience this incredible home and its location. In less than 2 hours from San Francisco you can be surrounded by redwoods, exploring rocky coasts, tasting incredible local wines or watch the crashing waves from our swimming pool and spa. We are happy to supply our guests with a long list of things to do and see. But we have found that those lists are quickly forgotten once they walk through the door. We've spent 6 months up-dating and improving the Cove House. It is constructed out of clear heart redwood that is 500 to 1000 years old. 39 windows and skylights were replaced to make the most of the spectacular views! The pool & spa were completely redone and new equipment installed. The carpet is brand new throughout and we are ready for guests!

What makes this house unique

Spectacular views and nature set the Cove House apart from other vacation properties and hotels. Our warm south facing location shields us from the relentless northwesterly winds. Located in the midst of a banana belt microclimate means that we have sunny days while the rest of the coast is fogged in. Crashing white water surf as far down the coast as the eye can see, Bodega Bay off to the south and the horizon is so vast that the earth's curvature is visible. The Cove House is beautiful during the warm sunny days but its true character comes out during the storms! Crashing waves put on a show that rivals a 4th of July fireworks display. Greet seals as they soak up the sun on the rocks down in the cove. Watch them teach their pups to swim during the spring months. Spot many species of whales from almost every room of the house. Toast to the moon as it spreads diamonds across the ocean while you are in the spa.

Perfect in every way, wonderful weekend for 4

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I returned 15 months later after our first stay at Cove House, this time inviting another couple, dear friends of ours, to share the weekend together. It was even better than the perfect first time because we had a chance to share it with them. The house is lovely, the hot tub is incredible, the views are gorgeous, but really most important is that the hosts Diane and Chris are not only attentive in the moment, but have organized the space really really well for short-term guests, and everything is there and logically laid out and convenient and relaxing. So grateful for this gem.

Cove House was simply perfect. The location was spectacular. The décor was elegant yet comfortable. The pictures, as beautiful as they are, do not do it justice. Other reviews mentioned that the challenge was to actually leave Cove House. Now that we experienced it's magic, we agree completely. Diane gave complete and very helpful directions and suggestions which we followed and really appreciated. We celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary at Cove House and now have wonderful memories to treasure. We had dinner at the Timber Cove Inn and would recommend it for the quality of the food and the fact that it is just one mile away. We visited Healdsburg which is a very cute town and sampled champagne on the way back at the Korbel winery. But the highlight of our week at Cove House was just chilling in the hot tub and pool or having morning coffee or happy hour cocktails on the deck. I have no reservations in recommending Cove House.

Magical Place - Perfect stay from start to finish!

  • 5 of 5

Our extended family vacationed just a little south of here in July. We had made plans to come back (just the 2 of us) to celebrate our anniversary-this time to Napa/Sonoma area. After falling in love with northern California's rocky coast in the summer, we cancelled our wine country reservations and booked the Cove House. We are VERY glad we did.

When your VRBO rental home budget is stretched to the limit, you hope everything about it is as advertised. The Cove House does not disappoint. We found everything in the description accurate, except the descriptions of the views and location. Views and location are even better than the pictures and text can portray. We drove to the coast via the Russian River Valley, a wonderful drive in itself.

We found the home perfect for just the two of us, then immediately tried to figure out who we could bring back someday to share the place with, as it would sleep 4 people very comfortably. Diane sent us a ton of information (thoughtfully delivered in small portions) to help us plan our trip and what we might need to bring with. We love to cook, and did not eat out but once during our 5 day stay. Among other useful information, Diane provided a kitchen inventory which helped with grocery shopping and meal planning. Even though we did not eat out hardly at all, the local places to eat and things to do were listed in the "Cove House Book" which was there for us on the table when we arrived. This book answered every question we had and was completely up-to-date.

We had mentioned to Diane it was an anniversary trip. Diane had a special bottle of local Champagne chilled and waiting for us. This thoughtfulness was a reflected in so many other ways during our stay.

Pool and hot tub were both utilized on our visit. Kitchen Pantry had lots of staples to get you started...nothing expired or too old to use. Just perfect. Attention to detail in the kitchen paralleled the rest of the house. Wood-burning fireplace supplies were plentiful and we enjoyed a fire every morning and some evenings during our stay. The owners have thought of everything that enables you to settle in quickly and start enjoying your stay..even labeling all the light switches.

Thanks Diane and Chris for the great care you take with this treasure of a home and the professionalism with which you handle your guests every need. We were delighted to write this review and hope we can return someday to share the Cove House with others. A magical place.

Sweet little architectural gem Cali coastal LOVE!

  • 5 of 5

Location, location, location! Stunning spot with lovely view, so quiet and tranquil in rustic modern setting. Architecturally distinct and special for anyone, especially design nerds or building buffs. Everything is there that you need and the pool and hot tub are fantastic! Not to mention a fantastic owner who could not be more pleasant and accommodating. A gracious host, a lovely home, a stellar view. What more do you need? Only regret is not staying longer!

The cove house

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I recently stayed at the cove house. Our stay couldn't have been any better. The house was immaculate and had any and everything you could ever need. Highlights for me were the pool and hot tub. They were wonderful and I spent more time in them then out. Highlights for my wife were the spectacular views of the Pacific, sounds of the waves and beautiful nature and wildlife all around us. She enjoyed capturing all with her camera. Diane and Chris really know how to help your stay to be relaxing and enjoyable down to the last detail. I would highly recommend the cove house to all of my friends and we'll definitely be back next year to recharge our batteries again. Thank you, Diane and Chris

5 Stars is not enough!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I for the past 9 years have tried to stay in a house somewhere on the Northern California coast for Memorial & Labor day weekends. The Cove House by far blew our expectations away, as well as matching up to any of the previous houses we've stayed in. This house THE best!

The views are incredible from practically every room, but for us it was the view we were able to wake up to each morning with the cool breeze of the cove. The view of the garden & pool with the ocean in the background is priceless. Without a doubt the most relaxing part of our stay was soaking in the hot tub....evening & mornings! Along with the outside shower made it perfect each time. In our experiences, the hot tubs never really work as described....The Cove House is NOT one of these houses, everything works better than described, especially the hot tub!

The kitchen is perfectly equipped for most meals. Be sure to bring extra food, you won't want to leave for anything. Diane had champagne chilled waiting for us as well as pasta & sauce, knowing we would be arriving late. Clearly one of those "above & beyond" details from the owners. :)

Thank you so much Diane, we will be back.

Some of the best whale watching in California can be done right here in our living room. But if you want to go out and about here are a few suggestions. The Cove House is surrounded by some of the most spectacular parklands in the world. Hiking, biking, beachcombing, water sports and beach access are just minutes away. Visit the historic Russian Fort Ross built in 1812. Go wine tasting at our local wineries. Enjoy fine dining and live music at the Timber Cove Inn which is visible from the Cove House. Shop the local farmers market open on Sunday mornings. Drive down to Bodega Bay for fresh seafood and saltwater taffy. We love the clam chowder at the ultimate beach shack at Spuds Marina. Be sure to buy an extra pint for the next day. If you didn't get enough spirited driving up the Jenner Grade on Highway 1, Old Fort Ross Road can't be beat for an adventurous drive through the redwoods. Once you reach Cazadero an old logging town, reward yourself with a stop at Raymond's Bakery. We go there on Friday nights for the pizza and local bands. The outdoor eating area and stage are surrounded by giant old growth redwoods. Cazadero is also home to a fantastic Willys Jeep collection and museum. We are about 2 hours for the heart of Sonoma Wine Country, Anderson Valley and Calistoga. You can head north and reach Mendocino in about 2.5 hours. It's a beautiful drive. Many guests ask us about the weather here. It changes by the hour. We've lived here full time for a year now and we've experienced better weather than Coastal San Diego. Some visitors have been disappointed by sunshine rather than the dramatic storms and giant waves. It does not snow, if we get fog we are so close to the water we can still see it. The ocean keeps our temperature mild year round. Our southern location protects us from the wind. The nearest town is Gualala about 30 minutes north. It has 2 full service grocery stores, art galleries, restaurants and not a single stop sign or stop light on the main drag.
