Truly life is a gift and I am so fortunate to have two beautiful homes, this one in Princeville and a home in Seattle. I bought this condo as a second home 3-4 years ago, and spent 10 months here last year. It is SO MUCH FUN HERE!! I've never rented it before, but my daughter and son in law in Kirkland are having their first baby in 2015 so I will spend more time in Seattle and will try VRBO this Feb/March/April. In Princeville I paddle 6 man canoes, surf skis, do yoga and tai chi, bike, too many fun things to name. and have the greatest friends in the world. I hope to introduce you to both of my communities, as I will soon put my Alki house in West Seattle on the market and buy a condo in Kirkland and put that condo on VRBO as well.
As to business life, after sailing offshore with my husband 1978-80 (who has since passed), I co-owned Seattle's Elliott Bay Yachting Center and Yacht Sales for 10 years, then founded YachtWorld in 1995, retiring in 2014. Still write stories for YachtWorld as their Hawaii Correspondent, paddling out on my surf ski on Hanalei Bay to meet visiting cruisers. My current service work includes OceanHeroes, recognizing individuals and their foundations who inspire us with their work in ocean advocacy and friendship with the sea. I serve on the Board of the Benaroya Research Institute of Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle and chair their Illuminations event. In Princeville I'm involved with the service work of Rotary.

All of the photos, videos, ads and movies about Hawaii did not prepare me for the beauty of Kauai's north shore. Coming here alone, I was attracted to the safe community where I could wander out on the road, golf course, the cliff's edge, to view the stars in the middle of the night. There is no ambient light here, no audio or visual pollution. Yet, everyone passes by walking to the St. Regis or the sunset vista across the street. The surfers drive down to check out the waves at Hideaways and Hanalei Bay. I wanted to chat with locals, neighbors, as well as Hawaii visitors as I walked out my front door. I wanted yoga, swimming, beaches, golf, tennis, restaurants, coffee, snorkeling, swimming pools and walking paths close by. And I got it:)))
Like many vacation properties, all Hale Moi properties are not the same. The bottom floor units are less desirable. The top floor units have high ceilings, better views, better air flow and a loft for a second bedroom. They are designed with two sides, and many people rent out each side separately; I am renting both sides of the entire apartment out, which is why it has a higher price than most. If you only want the living room, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom loft, let me know and I can accommodate with a lower rate. One side, about 300 sq. ft., is a huge beautiful bedroom with a bathroom. The other side, about 600 sq. ft., is the living room, kitchen, bathroom and a loft bedroom, with a built-in staircase. But like they say with boats, it doesn't matter how big the boat, it is best for two people. And this property is available only for two people.
Hale Moi is an older property built in the 70's, and many apartments have not been remodeled or dressed up. I tore mine apart and reassembled with luxuries I wanted, such as an amazingly cushy wool carpet with thick hypo allergenic pad underneath. Hypo allergenic paint. Marble and granite. I built a beautiful custom staircase to the loft to replace the ladder that comes standard. All surfaces and appliances were replaced. Then I furnished it beautifully.
We rented this condo for our honeymoon. It was all we hoped for and more. The condo was very nicely furnished and the kitchen had everything we needed to cook while we were on the island. From the pictures that were displayed we could not quite tell how private the condo would be. We were very pleasantly surprised how the layout worked to provide for an experience which allowed us to easily forget the other accommodations and nearby golf course. The lanai was such a treat. It was perched over a ravine where we looked out over beautiful vegetation to the mountains and once again fairly well isolated from the other decks.
In Princeville, the Princeville Community Center at the head of the road has yoga classes, pilates classes, Tai Chi, and many other classes daily by drop-in. $5 or $10 donation. Espresso, cafes & fish tacos are at the Food Court. Great shopping too.
The Makai Golf Course next door has a beautiful golf course, tennis courts and heated pool. I have golf clubs and tennis rackets you can use, just ask. Pool is by monthly membership.
The Westin: I have hotel beach towels. They have water aerobics in one of their 3 heated pools for the public, $15. Starbucks and patio restaurant on site.
The St. Regis Princeville Resort: We are a five minute walk to the St. Regis Hotel and all their amenities including a beautiful pool. Lovely place. I have St. Regis beach towels. The beach is public, as are all their onsite restaurants and shops. Rotary meets here every Thursday at noon.
Right across the street and set back hidden in the Pale Ke Kua resort, Hideaways Pizza Pub is a local favorite. Really, really good food, moderate pricing, come as you are. Fish, salads, pizza.
In Hanalei, there are 5 miles of beaches. For $20 you can join Namolokama or Hanalei Canoe Club and go out 3 times on a 6man canoe. Plenty of shopping & restaurants including favorites BarAcuda, PostCards, the Dolphin.
In Kilauea, my fav restaurant is the Fish Market for dinner. Fav hangout is Kilauea Bakery. Kilauea lighthouse and whale watching is beautiful.
