About Martha R. Nelson
Jeff and Martha Nelson, both graduates from nearby Warren Wilson College, have lived in Black Mountain for over 20 years. Together they designed and built Kitzuma Cottage as a place where folks can come to enjoy the mountains and discover the beauty of the area as well as all that this area has to offer as a haven for all arts, music, food lovers, and outdoor enthusiasts. Martha's pottery studio is located adjacent to the Cottage. She teaches pottery in her fully equipped studio with four wheels and both gas and electric kilns. While Martha enjoys keeping her hands in dirt and clay on a small scale, Jeff works with the earth on a larger scale. His business, Riverrock Construction, is a company specializing in boulder retaining wall construction, excavation, site development, foundation and septic systems. Our two daughters, Emma and Lucy, grew up here in the Swannanoa Valley enjoying the hiking, biking, boating and the music and art of the area. We know that you will enjoy it too!
Martha R. Nelson purchased this House in 2014
Why Martha R. Nelson chose Black Mountain
We purchased the lot on which Kitzuma Cottage is built in 2006 originally planning to build a larger home. In 2015 we decided to build a vacation property instead. We have lived in and loved this area so much over the past thirty years we wanted to build a place where others can come and discover it too! Being completely involved from start to finish is really a dream come true for us.
What makes this House unique
In designing and building Kitzuma Cottage we kept in mind what makes a vacation home special for us. The house has an open living, kitchen and dining room area which allows for great together time while dining and relaxing. Location, location, location allows for the most fun! Being conveniently located to biking trails, hiking trails, as well as, art galleries, restaurants, and shops Kitzuma Cottage can satisfy everyone's tastes. Jeff is a biking enthusiast and Martha loves pottery and yoga and we located and designed the house with these activities in mind. We love living outside the busier city of Asheville but close enough to enjoy the additional restaurants and businesses that are only a 15 minute drive away. Black Mountain is a gem and we know that during your visit you will discover a love of Black Mountain too! Please note that our cottage is in a semi-rural area close to a scenic railway and light sleepers need to know that there is an evening and early morning train.

Clean, modern, easy access to different activities
This home had a great floor plan that offered privacy and convenience with 2 bedrooms and 2 separate baths. Everything was clean and modern. The house was centrally located and a quick drive to the supermarket, exploring downtown Black Mountain, and hiking. Other reviewers have mentioned the noise from the Interstate-not an issue for people on the go. We took a fan for white- noise and had no problems sleeping!
We were very satisfied with the accommodations.
The house was close to the venue we attended. Minutes from downtown Black Mountain.
Perfect location, very updated and comfortable
I traveled with two other couples New Years Eve weekend. We are frequent visitors to the Asheville area and will say after staying in Black Mountain we will be changing for good. Black Mountain is close enough to Asheville you can get there in no time and has a very nice downtown area itself. This mountain house really is the perfect location being right off of the interstate. It made getting around very easy and quick.
The actual house is in very updated and great shape. Everything you need is already provided and very clean. Two very nice mountain bikes are even provided if you want to take advantage of some of the nearby trails.
Our group has stayed in more than 10 vacation rentals and we were all in agreement that this mountain house was one of, if not the nicest rentals we've stayed in.
Overall we were very happy with the stay and we will be back.
Very Nice & Thoughtful
Kitzuma cabin is nicely outfitted with everything you need for having fun, including two mountain bikes inside. Nice separation exists between bedrooms and baths with laundry in between, made connectable with pocket doors. Modern new kitchen and comfy open living space with ample windows has 'tree house' appeal. The hidden gem was the private outside hot/cold shower over a gigantic rock base. We brought fresh rosemary and mint herbs to steam in a pot for fragrance plus a little humidity inside, later making the perfect final rinse 'tea' splash after chilly crisp morning showers outside. Only downside is close proximity to I-40 and train tracks. You do hear them, even at night.
Nicely Done. Now added to one of our favorite vacation spots. 4.5 stars
My wife and I were looking to get away for a few days. We originally thought we'd go to Charleston, SC but we've never been to NC and had heard great things about the Asheville area. Lucky us we chose wisely as hurricane Matthew came through Charleston a few days before our trip which would have ruined everything. Asheville is awesome. If you haven't been it needs to be on your bucket list. This turned out to be one of our favorite vacations. We initially tried to find a location in Asheville but things were booked pretty tight and expensive. Having never vacationed in NC, we were a little concerned about finding something far away from the city. As it turns out, Black Mountain is a fabulous little town with some great restaurants and shops with no traffic while Asheville is pricey and crowded. If I get to go again, I will scratch Asheville off the list and look only in the Black Mountain area. The cabin was very comfortable and perfectly located only a few minutes from town and ~15min from Asheville. You're right off the interstate so you can get where you're going quickly. Cabin looks to have been recently remodeled and everything is nicely done. The inside looks brand new from the floors to the ceilings with new appliances and clean bathrooms. Very comfortable and perfect for us. You could easily add another couple or some kids and have plenty of room.
Negatives were all minor but if you want some here they are...1) You are only a quarter mile from I40 and can hear the trucks loading up. 2) Between you and the interstate are the train tracks. Expect a couple of trains per day including some at night complete with train whistle. They pass quickly but if you can't stand trains you should look somewhere else. As a point of reference, my wife slept through them but I did not. 3) TV in the living room only, none in the bedrooms. We like watching late night movies in bed so we missed this.
I highly recommend with 4.5 stars.
A perfect retreat in Black Mountain!
Such a cozy yet modern little cottage. Well appointed, beautifully decorated and a well stocked kitchen for cooking. We loved being able to use the bikes to bike up and down the mountain. Martha was Super helpful and welcoming. We will certainly stay here again when next in the area. Highly recommend.
Convenient to premier mountain biking trails including Kitzuma (bike here from the door of the cottage), the Royal Gorge Greenway, and Bent Creek. Ten minutes to the Blue Ridge Parkway and the art and crafts lovers' shopping hotspot of the Folk Art Center. Ten minutes to the Lake Eden Arts Festival grounds in Black Mountain. Visit downtown Asheville for extensive choices for dining and art galleries (15-20 minute drive). Or just stay at the cottage and cook fresh food from our local tailgate market in the modern kitchen.
