About Alison Kobban

After several years of renting places for both skiing and summer fun, we decided to invest in a place to create our own memories. We were enchanted when we first walked into Norden Lodge. We invite you to stay in our house with its nearly 100 years of history on Donner Summit. Please, join us!

Alison Kobban purchased this house in 2015

Why Alison Kobban chose Soda Springs

Walking into the Norden Lodge, there is an aura, a charm, a history which envelopes the visitor. After passing an extra large "mud room" - used for both winter and summer fun - you enter the Billiard Room which used to house the Norden General Store. This room, its two seating areas, pool tables and multiple musical instruments embody the history of the lodge. After looking at multiple houses, we knew THIS was the one; the one for our kids to enjoy - and hopefully for their kids as well. There are so many nooks and crannies - and SPACE. It is simply unique and amazing!

What makes this house unique

Run for years as a bed and breakfast, there are several bedrooms with full baths "en suite." Located on the property is an old cabin like building that housed some of the men that built the first railroad tracks over Donner Summit. There is history, character and charm from room to room.

Nice place but not completely blown away

  • 3 of 5

First I think the location where this place is great. It's not too far off the highway and it's surrounded by a lot of things you can do. The scenery around this area is really beautiful. Regarding the home itself, I like the pool table and lounge area. The kitchen was nice. What I thought could be better was the home seems a bit old and could use some updating/renovation. For example I didn't like the bathrooms and feel they could be newer and cleaner. But overall, not a terrible place and had a good time with my group.

Owner's Response: Thank you Tseeb for your comments about The Norden Lodge. You have correctly identified the historic nature of The Lodge which was originally built when they were building the railroad! Over the years it has operated as a General Store, a gas station, a private lodge (hence the bathrooms in most of the rooms). We renovated the kitchen and have done a lot of other non visible improvements since we bought the house two years ago. Please do stay with us again - and enjoy the hiking, boating, camping, and history the area offers in the summer.....and the skiing, sledding snow shoeing in the winter!

Good group venue

  • 4 of 5

The proximity to Claire Tappaan Lodge was great for us. We were a family of 8 in town for my cousins wedding at the lodge. The outside of the house suffers from deferred maintenance - especially around the entry and porch area, but the inside is warm and cozy. Kitchen is large, modern appliances and great space to cook for a group. Large dining room table was a plus. Lots of bathrooms and bedrooms were comfortable. The pictures on the site need to be updated as the bedrooms are set up a little differently than what they currently show. Met Travis, the caretaker, who was very nice. Loved the photos from the 40s of the original structure - great history. Thanks!

Owner's Response: Thanks Kim. We are glad you enjoyed your stay and The Lodge. Since your stay we have repaired the front porch and the back deck (both of which were damaged from the incredibly heavy snow this last season :)) and repaired some other fixes to the front of the house. Some of the appliances in the kitchen are literally weeks old, and we are glad that the space worked well for you. We hope you will be able to join us again for another family gathering. Best, Colleen

Great Guys-Escape!

  • 5 of 5

Our church rented out this place for our annual men's retreat and we really digged it. It has a "Basspro" outdoors feel to it. It was close to home, gun ranges, and fishing. Thanks Collen and Alison.

Spacious, secluded old-style cabin with large game room and patio

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our long July weekend in this large cabin. The surrounding area is beautiful! We especially enjoyed the game room, with pool table, small foosball table, multiple couches, musical instruments, sound system and large beer fridge. The patio was also great to enjoy the good weather at this time of year. There is a charcoal bbq out back for grilling and the patio is big enough for a large group to enjoy. The property has an old cabin coziness to it that everyone enjoyed and there is ample sleeping space and common areas for large groups.

Although not mentioned until two days prior to our arrival, there is a caretaker, Travis, who lives on the property. Travis was very nice and didn't bother us at all, but it was a surprise to have someone else there as one of the reasons we had booked this property is that it is secluded and away from other homes; we didn't want to have to be concerned about bothering neighbors if we were loud or up late.

It is also great only need to drive 10-15 minutes to Donner Lake. There are also several trail heads nearby (the closest, including the PCT, are only 5 minutes to drive or 10-15 minutes to run), including the PCT. We did all our cooking in the large kitchen and bbq, which was perfect for our group. If you're looking for restaurants, there's a bit of a drive required.

We really enjoyed our stay here!

Owner's Response: I am so glad you enjoyed our house for your large gathering! I think you mentioned you were celebrating a wedding! I apologize that the information on Travis was not transparent; I will update VRBO to reflect his presence. As you mentioned, he has a completely separate entrance and does not have access to the main house unless in case of emergency. Travis is a long time engineer at Sugar Bowl, so he is very handy "just in case" he is needed!

Wonderful venue for large party gatherings

Group of 12 loved this amazing site a few minutes away from access to the Pacific Crest Trail and Sugar Bowl. 15 minute drive from Donner Lake. Ample sleeping, cooking, and indoor/outdoor dining space, as well as a game room.

Like Living in a Forest!

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful place! Perfect for a large family gathering, including small children.

The rec room on the first floor had a pool table and foos ball, which keep the big kids happy, and the living room with the large deer head served as a great board game room. The place came fully stocked with board games. There was also a full pantry in the kitchen for us replace whatever we use, as well as an assortment of cooking spices above the stove. You may need to bring your own cooking oil.

The area is peaceful. On the front porch, there was swinging bench that the kids really enjoyed. "I just like taking in the air," said a 7-year old while pumping legs back and forth on the bench. And grandma loved it, too. It was a perfect retreat after her early morning walk.

While this house seemed rather remote, we found a great 30-minute hiking trail starting at Clair Tappaan Lodge (a five minute walk up the road). There, we also discovered a geocache hidden near the lodge's entrance. The kids got a real kick out of geocaching and there's plenty in the surrounding area. Some were within walking distance and others were a 5 to 10 minute drive away. We found 3 during our stay here and this was one of the many highlights of our vacation!

Overall Donner Pass Lodge was a very comfortable and exciting place to stay. I highly recommend it to any large group looking to have an all-inclusive experience--be it indoor lounging and games or outdoor adventures and reflections. When I asked one of our kids why she liked staying here, she said: "Because it's like living in a forest!" And that pretty much sums it up.

Owner's Response: We're so pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay! We find that our guests discover things about the surrounding area that we ourselves weren't even aware of - geocaching is a great example. Please come back and stay again some time!
