About Beth Paluch
We live east of Cleveland, Ohio in a little country burg called Leroy. No mountains there but it is still pretty special with 5 acres of woods. We have been married for 35 years and worked together in our own business for 25 years. Along with managing JP Horizons Inc. Beth has developed a passion for running this new vacation rental business and loves making sure each guest has an amazing experience. Jim is an inspirational speaker and business coach and has written 3 motivational novels. We have worked together to create interactive in-house training programs and are known for seminars and teambuilding events that making learning and communicating fun. Jim graduated from The Ohio State University with a degree in Landscape Architecture and landscaping has always been our hobby. With a concern for indoor entertainment replacing outdoor activity and the health issues our society has experienced as a result, Jim started a movement in the landscape industry in 2010 called COME ALIVE OUTSIDE. Together we work with professional landscape firms, students and communities to share the importance of getting kids and adults back outside. We hope everyone that comes to Highwoods enjoys the property, the views and the entire area half as much as we do. We consider this our second home and we are excited to share it with you!
Beth Paluch purchased this Cabin in 2015
Why Beth Paluch chose Sandy Mush
Two years ago we purchased the adjacent property because we fell in love with the mountain grandeur, it's views and the unique architecture of the home and it's companion cottage at 16 & 18 Highwoods Drive. At that time we also fell in love with the beautiful ponds, rock out-cropping and natural "playground" that is part of this property and voiced our interest to the owners. As our VRBO business grew the one next door was even greater and people continue to come back year after year. It was a great day when the VanZee family contacted us to see if we were still interested in this wonderful cabin and companion land and we became the thrilled owners on June 1, 2015! Together the two properties offer an amazing retreat for a large group of 16-20 people or two very unique and private spots for 2-10 people to escape into a bit of paradise..
What makes this Cabin unique
It is so close to the Blue Ridge Parkway, amazing waterfalls and every type of great outdoor activity you can imagine while being equally close to shopping, restaurants and the multi-cultural fun of Asheville! Or... it call feel far away from everything if that is what you want. We love the drive up the mountain roads past farmer's lush fields, cows, goats, horses, llamas etc. as this wonderful place helps us leave the complexities of life behind. The opportunity to 'get away from it all' while still being close to the convenience and appeal of Asheville makes this our perfect get-away.

A true escape from the city
Our experiences with Ms. Paluch were amazing. She was so responsive and quick to help us any way we needed. The hot tub was perfect, and the views made the drive up there worthwhile. The rooms were large and comfortable, and the kitchen was stocked with all the utensils we needed. Of note, friends sleeping in the loft upstairs became extremely hot and were uncomfortable. We couldn't find a solution to make it cooler. The service was still spotty even with WiFi, so that is something you should know before you go out there. Overall, such a relaxing and enjoyable time.
Thanks for your thoughtful review. I wish you had called and we could have explored the settings to adjust the temperature. I'm sorry you may not have understood that I live right next door and can respond quickly to any trouble. I will also be sure to note in my info that if the internet slows down it could be to the fact that the satellite data may have been used from a previous guest and I could have ordered more. I will be sure to watch for this in advance of arrivals in the future.
Beautiful property close to Asheville!
We rented this cabin with a group of friends for a weekend get-away. We were able to enjoy local hiking at Catawba Falls and Chimney Rock and also venture into Asheville where we enjoyed some excellent dining. Beth was very accommodating and went out of her way to make sure we had everything we needed. The cabin was well stocked, clean, and comfortable.
We were very happy with our stay and would definitely recommend to others.
The house is great and close to everything, but still felt like a retreat. Nice hike right in back. Beth is outstanding to work with.
Beautiful property and very nice property owners!
My husband, myself, and our two little dogs stayed the week of Thanksgiving at Beth and Jim's cabin. We loved the cabin - it was so beautiful and had such a nice "flow" to it. It was so nice to wake up in the morning and be able to look out to see the break of day through the front windows - how delightful!
The only disappointment was that the hot tub at the cabin broke while we were there so we couldn't use it the last 4 days we were there (and we're total hot tub fiends!). But that's not the fault of the owners as how could they know it'd break while we were there (it worked just fine the first 2 days). In fact, Beth said we could use the hot tub at their house which is walking distance away (how nice is that?), and also sent us a small refund once we got home. She was VERY apologetic about the hot tub - and again, it certainly wasn't her fault. I only bring it up to demonstrate how nice Beth was and how she really strives to make sure you have a good time and enjoy your stay at her cabin. In fact, since it was Thanksgiving week, she left us a home-made pumpkin pie in the fridge! My husband was beyond thrilled! (the pie was EXCELLENT too) She also provided makings for s'mores, hot cocoa, coffee, etc. VERY nice touches.
I feel I have to address one reviewer's complaint about the neighboring dogs. I am an avid reader of reviews, and was so very concerned after reading her review that the neighbor's dogs were bothersome. I was in fact so worried that we'd have trouble with the neighboring dogs pestering and being a nuisance (our own two little dogs are very timid and shy) that I emailed and also called Beth about my worries. She assured me the dogs were no trouble and that a simple "holler" at them would make them scoot. Well, I have to say we walked all over the property every day; walking down to the pond, down the driveway to the street, etc, and never once encountered the said irritating dogs. Finally, the last day we were there we saw one dog walking over the hill in his own driveway - he was a small-ish dog and certainly nothing to be scared of if he did come onto the property. But like I said, we never saw the dogs once on the property so I hope if anyone else reads that review about the neighbor's dogs, they are not scared away from renting this cabin. Because it's a beautiful and relaxing place to stay and Beth and Jim are WONDERFUL hosts!! We'd definitely stay again and wholeheartedly recommend this cabin to anyone!!!
Beautiful Place to Relax and Recharge
The property is even more beautiful than the pictures describe. I went there with my daughter, two grandchildren, my mother and an aunt, and it was perfect for every age. The house is very large with bedrooms on three levels. We had such fun together on the main level in the big living room, kitchen and dining area, but then there were plenty of spaces to go off and be alone if you wanted. The house is surrounded by decks and porches so you can eat outside if you want, sit outside and read or practice yoga. My mom and aunt loved relaxing in the hot tub every evening. My 3-year-old had plenty of space to play inside or run around exploring outside. My daughter and I went up the mountain trail one morning. It is challenging, and it feels wonderful to get to the top and see the view! For those who want to explore, Asheville is only about 20 minutes away, and we went to the Friday evening drum circle and then walked around visiting local stores. I look forward to our next visit!
Beautiful property and thoughtful owners
The house is gorgeous and worked perfectly for a group of seven. We enjoyed the deck, hot tub, well-stocked kitchen, TV, and all of the little amenities Beth and Jim left for us, including a water cooler, laundry detergent for the dryer, and custom water bottles. They took good care of us, meeting us at the front drive to direct us to the house and checking on us when the power went out very briefly. I would definitely go back next time I'm in the area!
Enjoy the multicultural activities of Downtown Asheville and don't miss the Friday night Drum Circle. Less than 30 minutes from the National Park and Blue Ridge Parkway, amazing hiking trails, fishing, waterfalls and all nature has to offer in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Extensive restaurant scene in all directions. Huge farmers market all year long.
