Tranquil Mirror Lake Paradise With Large Screened-in Porch!

Bedrooms 3
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

About the property

Close Enough to Walk to Town, But You Will Never Want to Leave the Back Porch!

This charming retreat sits at the top of Hickory Hill Road above Mirror Lake on a gorgeous 1.5-acre piece of property that features a delightful frog pond fed by a bubbling creek. The snug interior is a combination of heirloom/folk charm and contemporary amenities, including cable TV, DVD, Internet, washer/dryer, and a full-sized fireplace with ample firewood on hand. The house has three bedrooms – two twins, two queens, and a king – each with its own full bath. The modern master features a cozy king-size bed, expansive bath, walk-in closet, and its own deck where you can watch hummingbirds gather nectar during the day, or scan the Milky Way like you've never seen it before at night. The quaint but dependable kitchen includes a classic stove and range, and all you will need to prepare a first-class meal. But the massive screened-in back porch is where you will want to spend most of your time, listening to the wind rustle through the trees as countless birds sing their songs, or relaxing on the porch glider as a gentle summer rain wets the crystal clear mountain air. Or take up a glass of wine and a casual game of badminton in the back yard while steaks sizzle on the grill. Follow the path that leads to the secluded pond and you are sure to see more wildlife on the way. Another option is to take a short walk down Hickory Hill to feed the ducks on picturesque Mirror Lake where you might also be inclined to cast a fly rod for trout, or cruise the serene waters in a kayak or canoe. Just beyond Mirror Lake is the new Highlands Plateau Greenway trail that will lead you on a scenic walk directly into town if you are so inclined.

Check-In Time: 4pm

Check-Out Time: 10am

Note: As with most houses in Highlands, there is a furnace for heat, but no central air conditioning. Ceiling fans provide all of the cooling you will need at 4,100-feet of elevation, and on those rare nights in July and August when temperatures climb higher than expected, an open window or two will cool the inside air to a comfortable level.

Incredible house, great location, peaceful getaway!

  • 5 of 5

This is a great house, super quiet, well apportioned and very cozy. The porch is incredible, but wasn't applicable for us since it was below freezing for our entire stay! The fireplace, however, was just right - and plenty of firewood. The kitchen is well equipped for most kinds of cooking, and the rooms were clean and the beds comfortable. And if you're versed in folk art, you'll be pleasantly surprised to see the house is awash in incredible pieces by Mose T, Howard Finster and Jimmie Lee Sudduth. The property manager is a delight to work with too. We'll be back!

Great weekend in the Mountains !

  • 5 of 5

My family just returned from a wedding weekend in Highlands, and this house provided the perfect accomodations for us. Clean, quiet, comfortable, (awesome matresses and linens and plenty of hot water which I appreciate ), screen porch, fireplace, old school charm with good wi fi and flat screen TV .

Retro kitchen was fine for cooking big Saturday morning breakfast, but not sure if it would handle a serious gourmet's needs.

Never the less, would definitely rent again and recommend to friends.

Lastly, Bee was a pleasure to deal with. Personal and professional at the same time.

Car: necessary

Located at 4,118 feet elevation, Highlands, N.C., offers an awe-inspiring setting with access to the complete outdoor experience – camping, hiking, birding, fly fishing, horseback riding, gem mining, world class whitewater sports, and zip line canopy tours. Try these must see points of interest:

Whiteside Mountain: home to the ‘shadow of the bear” is situated along the Eastern Continental Divide. This land, once part of the Cherokee Nation, offers grand vistas from its shear granite cliffs to the valleys which lie nearly 5,000 feet below. Watch closely to glimpse peregrine falcons soaring overhead.

Highlands Botanical Gardens & Nature Center: explore 12 acres of diverse flora of the southern Appalachian mountains. Opened in 1962 the gardens are a quiet refuge and home to native trees, plants, and wildflowers. The nature center offers exhibits and educational programs for the entire family.

Bridal Veil Falls: picturesque and the only waterfall in North Carolina that you can drive beneath.

Dry Falls: where the river cascades over a rock outcrop and one can walk beneath the rushing water.

Glen Falls & Chinquapin Mountain: combine a hike, three waterfalls and a beautiful stream in this outdoor adventure.

Sunset Rock: a front row view of the fiery setting sun descending across blue valley and the distant mountains. A great place to enjoy a picnic lunch or dinner.

Chills and thrills

if splashing about in the outdoors is more your style, cool mountain streams await you.

Bust your butt falls: this popular swimming hole, a favorite among locals, lies on the waterfall byway near Bridal Veil and Dry falls. The brave, can jump from riverside boulders into the Cullasaja River.

Cliffside Lake: enjoy a family picnic along with hiking, fishing and swimming in this recreational park. The lake has a small beach ideal for families with young children.

Sliding rock: a slick rock face perfect for taking a quick trip into a “cool” pool. Located in pastoral horse cove. While in the area visit the “world’s smallest post office” and bull pen bridge spanning the rugged Chatooga River featured in the 1972 thriller film Deliverance.

Nantahala Outdoor Center: the thrill of whitewater rafting on the region’s best rivers is nearby at the noc, proud host of the 2013 icf canoe freestyle world championships in september.

Highlands Aerial Park: combine the zip line alpine courses of Europe and the rain forest canopy tours of central america and you get Highlands Aerial Park. Fun for all ages.

Scaly Mountain outdoor center: rediscover the fun of trout fishing, seasonal ice skating, and snow tubing in winter or summer.

Hungry? When it comes to renowned restaurants, Highlands, N.C., features an extraordinary range of fine dining. Wine and dine at one of the six Wine Spectator award-winning restaurants, including Cyprus International Cuisine on Main Street; On The Veranda international cuisine and seafood just down the hill and walking distance from the house; the intimate Lakeside Restaurant; Wolfgang's Restaurant & Wine Bistro; Paoletti's Ristorante; and Madison's Restaurant and Wine Garden, just to name a few. There is everything from formal fine dining to places that will take you on a culinary journey around the world. And if you are looking for a casual lunch or dinner, Highlands has that too – everything from burgers, pizza, sandwiches, bbq and more.
