This charming private cottage is located in a private pastoral woodland setting by the Sandy Mush Creek in the Blue Ridge mountains 16 miles northwest of dynamic Asheville, set back from the road sheltered by trees, on a farm of 105 acres. The cottage has a serene atmosphere, is simply elegant and not overdone--yet only 30 minutes from all the fun of Asheville.

Beautifully constructed cottage with high cedar ceilings with the front door opening into the upper story living room and eating area, with balcony overlooking the Sandy Mush Creek, in addition to a fully-equipped gallery kitchen and half bath. There's a 48” flat screen SMART TV with Blue Ray player, DirectTV with HBO in the living room. The downstairs story of Chestnut Cottage is the bedroom with full bath, desk with love seat, and outside door opening onto patio with picnic table and sitting area by the creek. The cottage has central air and heat, and DSL and phone for local or toll-free calls.

Chestnut Cottage has Adirondack chairs by landscaped creek edge next to patio for relaxation and peace. It is a passive solar house with its southern walls of glass. This cottage is a special place with an unusual history. It was built as a place for families to birth their babies--many babies have been born at the cottage in the 1980's. There is a wood carved scene on the house of a mother cradling her infant above the balcony with a half-oval window.

About John Johnson and Angela Whitney

John has lived in Sandy Mush since 1977, and Angela since 1985. They met at a holistic nursing conference at UNCA that John co-sponsored with the American Holistic Nursing Association, married, and purchased this 105 acre farm and retreat center in 1988, and have cared for it since. They've offered individual retreats at Light of the Mountains since 1988, and now are offering this vacation cottage. They enjoy 3 adult children, and granddaughter Soraya. They love gardening, taking care of the land, and living with their sheep, chickens, dogs, nature, and all the wildlife. There are beavers, otters, heron, woodpeckers, kingfishers, deer, turkeys, groundhogs around, and of course, summer crickets and lightening bugs. John and Angela's big friendly Great Pyrennes help take care of the farm. Preservation of the richness of these pastures, woodland with springs, creeks, and huge rocks is important to them. The farm has been "organic" for 40 years, and has 80 acres certified for wildlife preservation. Angela is a holistic family nurse practitioner in Palliative Care, a retreat guide, and a Polarity Therapist. Angela has had a wellness practice in Asheville, SynergyAlive, since 1996 where she offers Polarity with the RaphaeliteWork, and focuses on each client's personal growth. John, a retired private school headmaster, is presently having fun (and lots of work) as a "gentleman farmer", and a personal retreat guide. In addition. he teaches personal growth and meditation around the world. He’s created national and regional conferences on healing with a universal perspective, and helped start two flourishing "alternative" schools for children in Asheville. John and Angela appreciate their friends, neighbors, and community. They welcome you to Chestnut Cottage at Light of the Mountains farm. You'll find cozy relaxation and peace at this beautiful spot so close to Asheville fun, and yet seemingly far away to also enjoy nature, romance, and reflection.

Sandy Mush is an incredibly beautiful area of the world. We have travelled to various parts of the world and though there are areas that match this area in beauty, none surpass it. Fall is splendid with color, winters are mild, spring comes early with a profusion of wild flowers. Evenings in the summer are cool. The Sandy Mush Creek brings a wonderful sound and feel. The people in the area are friendly. They actually wave when they see you on the highway! All this is only thirty minutes from downtown Asheville - a city full of great restaurants, theatre, festivals, and live music.

Beautiful, peaceful and serene spot. Beyond what I had hoped for. Close enough to pop in to Asheville for the restaurant scene but I should warn you that you probably won't want to leave!

Home Away from Home

We really enjoyed our restful stay at Chestnut Cottage. Our four nights were very serene. The huge, comfortable bed and fluffy pillows gave us a peaceful night’s sleep. We especially appreciated how clean and well-equipped the cottage was. Everything needed was supplied, down to several guide books on the area. The owners even left us a gift of local honey.

The onsite WIFI was valuable, especially since our AT&T cell service was not available until closer to town (owner noted they have Verizon coverage).

If you like a more isolated location and don’t mind a little drive into town, this is a great place to relax. It was a perfect home base for our auto touring of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Asheville area.

Cozy, quiet, and thoughtful.

This cabin had everything we could have wanted during our 5 night stay. We enjoyed the quiet company of the sheep and the soothing water of the creek. The kitchen was fully equipped and clean. We liked the layout of the cabin with the bedroom downstairs. It made the small space feel roomy. The owner left us a jar of local honey to enjoy which was a lovely (and tasty) surprise. There were many NC guidebooks which helped us plan our hikes. We would stay again.

A nicely appointed yet comfortable country retreat.

Its is a great get-away for two, especially if you enjoy natural surroundings.

The brook right next to the cottage, as well as the flower garden and birds, provided a relaxing sound track. As an added bonus, the sheep in the pasture next door were fun to watch. Its also nice to have the modern conveniences like fast internet and a good TV and sound system and a comfortable bed . Best of both worlds.

The location is not far from Asheville, or the Blue Ridge Parkway, so we could eat out and explore Asheville, or go hiking, or enjoy the scenery on the Parkway.

Angela and John were very responsive to any questions and made you feel at home. We would definitely stay there again.
