About Gabrielle Thompson

We built a 75' schooner in California and took guests for a week's sail throughout the Virgin Islands for 14 years. We decided to move to the mountains of North Carolina in 1991. We found our property at the end of the road next to the national park, and set about putting in an acre pond, a 35' pavilion, and many gardens. We have created a paradise that we adore. We wanted to share our beautiful location with guests, which we do with Eco Cove House.

Now that we are retired, we love to travel the world, but are always glad to come home to the prettiest place we know.

Why Gabrielle Thompson chose Marion

We love the natural beauty and tranquility of Eco Cove. It is secluded, yet only 1/2 mile from 70 Highway. As we are adjacent to the Pisgah National Forest and our property is mostly woods, meadows and ponds, we have an abundance of wildlife and bird varieties that visit. It is peaceful, and romantic.

What makes this house unique

The serenity and amazing variety of trees drew us here, yet the nearness to all of the myriad of activities that our mountains offer year round was another important aspect of our affection for Eco Cove. We lived in Black Mountain when we first moved here, but wanted the serenity of space and found it 20 minutes away. Asheville is our favorite city in the South. It brought us here after we left St. Thomas, the American Paradise. We established our own paradise in our cove.

Great location and house

  • 5 of 5

There were six adults and it took some figuring to make it work, but we did. Gabrielle and Tom were very welcoming and it was a pleasure to meet them. We hope to stay there again sometime soon.

Weekend retreat

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Eco-Cove Wildlife Sanctuary for the weekend while visiting relatives in the area. The house was very clean and interestingly decorated. The gardens looked just the way they are pictured. We enjoyed walking on the property, and my husband enjoyed swimming with the Koi in the pond. Our hosts were very welcoming and helpful. We hope to return soon.

Beautiful, private, peaceful and exceptionally clean.

  • 5 of 5

During an extensive search of online rental properties in the Lake Lure area, we happened upon Eco-Cove near Marion, NC about 30 minutes east of Asheville. Entering the sanctuary, going past the koi pond and past our hosts, Gabrielle and Ed's home, we were pleasantly surprised to find at the end of the lane what we would soon call our home away from home. This beautiful well maintained , fully equipped and extremely clean home is located in a private, secluded natural setting. The warm welcome and gracious hospitality extended to us during our stay including the personal touch of fresh floral arrangements throughout the home, made our stay even more special and enjoyable. Awakening to the woods coming alive with bird song in the morning, relaxing on the porch watching the hummingbirds and huge butterflies flitting about, listening to the trickling of the nearby brook, just enjoying the peace and tranquility and feeling the stress and tension draining away, we felt we had found a little piece of Heaven on earth and wished we could have stayed longer. We especially enjoyed visiting with our hosts down by the pond watching the koi feed. We highly recommend Eco-Cove and look forward to our return in the not so distant future. Thank you Gabrielle and Ed for making our stay truly special and memorable.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your great review. We loved having you on your birthday and filling the house with flowers since you mentioned how much you cherished them. I am so glad that you enjoyed the koi, pond and our time together feeding the fish. Our preserve is secluded and quiet and peaceful; as you say a bit of heaven. I appreciate your mentioning how clean it is, since I take great pride in maintaining a clean, beautiful, well furnished home. We do hope you will indeed return soon, hopefully in the spring when the foliage is spectacular and you can stay even longer. We loved meeting you and having you here. Thanks also for leaving it so spotless when you left. You are fabulous guests.

Clean and Spacious

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four enjoyed a two-night stay at Eco-Cove. Gabrielle and Ed were gracious, welcoming hosts. We really appreciated how clean and well maintained the house was. During our stay, we traveled to nearby Grandfather Mountain, Lake Lure, and Linville Caverns. The kids loved the animal room as well as seeing fireflies in the garden every evening. The home sits on a secluded, relaxing property. If our stay was a little longer, we would have definitely spent some time at the pond. Next time!

Happy guests from New York

  • 5 of 5

We feel very lucky to have found Eco-Cove for our week in North Carolina. The location was simply beautiful and private -- a serenely beautiful retreat in nature. We felt peaceful and happy in this beautiful natural environment. Our eight year-old could have spent the entire week just going for walks in the woods and swimming + canoeing in the pond (yes, it was just warm enough). However, the location was also great for outings to places like Linville Caverns, Asheville, Grandfather Mountain and all the other attractions of the area. The house is excellent - spacious, well-equipped, charming and super clean. Close to grocery and (excellent) ice cream, yet wonderfully peaceful and secluded. Finally, the owners were fantastic, fun, kind and helpful. I highly recommend this house as a place to rent and hope we can make it back some day.
