Kanaloa at Kona, Keauhou, 20 Yards from the Ocean
- Minimum stay:N/A
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:No
- Wheel chair accessible:No
A modern well-furnished ground-floor, 1500 sq. ft. oceanfront villa in the best possible spot within the most-exclusive condominium complex on the Big Island. Watch spectacular sunsets from the private lanai only 20 yards from the blue Pacific and 20 yards from a world-class golf course. At high tide you can occasionally feel a light spray from the surf. At night be lulled to sleep with the gentle sounds of the waves against the lava rocks and the breeze through the coconut palms.
This is truly tropical paradise in a safe, private, quiet surrounding as close to the Pacific as it's safe to be. The 18-acre Kanaloa complex is in a quiet residential district, a fifteen-minute drive from town along the coastline and a two-minute drive (1/2 mile) from Keauhou Shopping Center which offers a full-service grocery, large Longs Drugs, restaurants, post office, six-screen movie theater, and more. The Kanaloa Condominium complex is close to Kahalu'u snorkeling beach. It's a 25 minute 15 mile drive north to Kona's airport and a 15 slow drive along the coconut palm-lined waterfront road into town.
Kanaloa features 24-hour gated security in a quiet residential area, three pools (one for adults only) each with Jacuzzi spas, lighted tennis courts, all in a manicured setting planted with fragrant plumeria and gardenias, colorful bougainvillea, graceful ti leaves and swaying coconut palms.
This is our second home, our Hawaiian getaway which we offer as a vacation rental to discriminating non-smoking adults and well-behaved children when we're tied to Mainland chores. As such, we keep the Koa-wood kitchen equipped with new pots and pans, sharp knives, quality glassware and utensils, all the usual small appliances plus nice amenities such as a coffee grinder,toaster-oven and rice cooker.
The condo is tastefully decorated with Hawaiian art personally chosen from various Island galleries. There's also a small library with up-to-date Island guide books, including one personally written by the owner which gives personal recommendations of shops, restaurants, and suggested activities along with comments by our recent guests.
The large master bedroom has a king-size bed and large walk-in closet. The adjoining master bath has twin vanity sinks and a twin-headed walk-in tiled shower fitted with hold bars. The second bedroom contains twin beds and a walk-in closet. Its adjoining bath also has twin vanity sinks with a tub-shower. A top-quality convertible sofa in the living room also converts to a comfortable queen bed. There is no air conditioning; we rely on louvered windows, ceiling fans in every room, three large portable fans and the Kona breezes to keep cool and comfortable.
Large families should consider a joint rental with a similar condominium just across the pathway. For more information about this neighboring rentable condo see VRBO #1533.

We stayed at this beautiful condo in January 2013. The owner John was most helpful and always replied promptly to our email requests. The condo proved to far exceed our expectations. The photos on the web do not do it justice. It was a true home away from home. It was very well maintained, tastefully decorated and had the most welcoming and inviting feeling from the minute we walked in the door. The location, right next to the ocean, couldn't have been better. Thanks so much. We hope to return again.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing.

Our fourth visit winds up today and 1701 Kanaloa has continued to weave its magic upon us. This is not just one more minimally serviceable condo in a lovely location--it's an exceptionally beautiful home we've been privileged to visit. We come here for peace, quiet, beauty--the sound of those waves beneath the lanai lull us throughout the day and night. But the condo is, itself, unusual. Very intelligently built, it has full-sized bedrooms and bathrooms, wonderful showers, complete kitchens equal to those in any home where the owners enjoy cooking and good food (as these owners obviously do). Everywhere you look, every picture or art work on the wall, shows the taste and class of the owners. I've never seen rental properties with kitchens this well stocked and with high-end cookware to use. Everything--from the sheets on the beds to the towels in the bathrooms is high quality. We're already looking forward to the next visit. Fabulous place.Recommended for: Age 55+, people with disabilities, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

Kanaloa condo 1701 is everything advertised and more. From the moment we arrived, we felt like we were home (only better). Because, honestly, who has that amazing view at home!?! It was a bit warm on the day we arrived, so we opened the sliding doors to the lanai in addition to all of the louvered windows. We were immediately drawn to the lanai--the waves were crashing on the rocks just below the lanai. Absolutely beautiful! We spent the rest of the afternoon enjoying the view. The kitchen is fully equipped; there was even beer and soda in the refrigerator. We did not cook while we were there, but we could have with all of the provided tools. We rarely cook at home, so why would we do that on vacation!?! Normally, we dine out when we are on vacation, but we found that we preferred the simplicity of grabbing a Subway sandwich or pizza and bringing it back to the condo to eat on the lanai while watching the sunset. Everything we needed was just up the street at the Keauhou Shopping Center: Longs Drug, Subway, Bianelli's Pizza, Kenichi sushi, and even a post office to mail our souvenirs home. I don't know whether it was the bed, the sound of the waves, or the fact that we spent every day outside, but we slept 8 to 9 hours every night. I am guessing that all of the above contributed to the restful sleep. Plus, we never had any back or neck pain. I give the bed an A+ for comfort. We tried to stay on California time as much as possible, so we were on the lanai every morning before dawn. It was so tranquil. We spent most of our days getting scuba certified and diving with Big Island Divers. We highly recommend them, especially for the Manta Ray dive/snorkel--it's the experience of a lifetime. While diving, we saw sharks, turtles, manta rays, eagle rays, eels, octopus, and dolphins. The owners were very helpful before we arrived, during our stay, and after we were home. The communication exceeded our expectations. The owner heard there may have been an issue during our stay and was eager to fix it. The issue had nothing to do with the condo and was beyond the owners control, but we were impressed by his response. They provided helpful rental car information, and suggested books to read and websites to peruse. In addition, the owner has compiled a huge book of activities and reviews that is waiting for you upon arrival. We got many ideas on must-see sights and activities. Everything was spotless and in perfect working order. We will be back to Condo 1701.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, people with disabilities, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

We so much enjoyed our 5 days in 1701! The drive into the gated community was breathtaking with outstanding landscaping of all Hawaiian tropical flowers and plantings with majestic palm trees! The condo's parking place is extremely close to the condo which directly overlooks the splashing waves towards the west. What else could you want? The condo's owners are extremely kind and caring by directing us before our arrival to many helpful hints-including car rental. The interior is gorgeous and the 4 adults of us enjoyed our home for these few days. We grilled at the nearby bbq pit and enjoyed lounging at the ocean pool. We found the travel agent at the office of the complex extremely helpful to map out sites we could visit. We actually drove the perimeter of the entire island one very long and gorgeous day. Our first stop was in Honokaa at Tex Drive Inn where we "dove" into yummy malasadas; these are pastry-like dessert/donuts with Portugese origins. Then we were in awe at the 420' Ataka Falls. The path between these Falls is breathtaking towards the beautiful falls of Kahuna. Approaching Hilo, we took the Scenic Route just north of the city. This drive was like a shorten version of the Road to Hana. Simply gorgeous. The Volcano National Park is outstanding and we had the pleasure of a Ranger take us on a short trail hike and told us some wonderful stories of the history of the area. We returned back to our wonderful condo following Hwy 11 and passed by the Place of Refuge, which is a must to see, and the Kona Coffee Plantation--both of which we returned to the next day. We enjoyed a fun hamburger lunch at well known Annie's which is on the way to the Kona Coffee Plantation. We found our beautiful white sand beach at Hapuna State Beach which is about a 30 min. drive north. See how great our stay was at "our" Kanaloa at Kona condo was? We enjoyed the use of the condo beach chairs, snorkel gear, and beach towels. We had a fantastic vacation! My husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary on the Big Island in this great condo on the water. Truly, you can't get any closer to the ocean than this. We spent every morning over breakfast on the deck watching the waves crash against the lava rock, and, yes, you really can feel the ocean spray at times against your face. The condo is quiet and private, and it is well located near shopping, restaurants, Kona, and snorkeling beaches. There are a number of swimming pools on the property, if you're not an ocean swimmer, all well maintained. The owners have taken great care in providing extensive travel books, tips, recommendations, admonitions, restaurant reviews and general items of local color for their guests. We found this enhanced our enjoyment of the locale as we visited local farmer's markets, bought Kona Coffee, and generally traveled around to see the sights. We will be back!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Our family of 4 stayed at this condo for nine days through late September to early October. We are frequent visitors to the state of Hawaii and we always try to stay right on the water. This condo was RIGHT BY THE OCEAN as described! When the surf was up, we actually felt the ocean spray right on the lanai. The condo is decorated and kept up so nicely. We loved all the art collections which added the fun and joyous character to this beautiful unit. The owner is genuinely nice (we communicated via email several times before arriving) and pleasant to deal with. The location (Kanaloa at Kona) is great - very close to the Keauhou Shopping Center and the Kahaluu Beach Park and is a short, easy drive to the downtown Kailua-Kona (or you can catch the Honu Express Shuttle from the Keauhou Shopping Center). The kids loved swimming in the pool in the evenings and we used the BBQ by the pool a couple of times during our stay. I can't think of one bad thing to say about this unit. If you are looking for a quiet, clean, and convenient place right by the water, we highly recommend this unit!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

Simply the finest unit in the finest gated community on the Big Island--a hidden gem, a steal at any price, a place you will want to treasure and take care of as lovingly as its owners do. This is THE closest unit to the Pacific Ocean in the entire Kanaloa complex, if not the whole elite Alii Kona coast! Massive waves crash onto the lava boulders separating your private veranda lanai from the unparalleled turquoise expanse of the Pacific Ocean. The ocean spray may lightly salt your morning papaya or evening steak (yummy!) if you eat outdoors enjoying the sea breeze. The floor of the veranda is an incredible handmade tile map of the Hawaiian Pacific area. Longboat canoes paddle by in the morning; whales or swordfish breach in winter afternoons, while the sunsets from the deck are to die for--you will dream of this incredible private paradise for months if not years after you leave. What an unforgettable spot for a private romance--or a specially intimate family holiday. The owners clearly devote immense time and thought (as well as money!) to maintain their oceanfront home aesthetically elegant and functionally perfect. They have invested in every amenity, from their vast sensuous jacuzzi to the gorgeous kitchen that proves that the owner is a gourmet chef. The owners leave their cupboards well-stocked with a total array of spices and basic supplies, with the understanding that you replace what you use during your stay so they will also have it when they return. You can use their snorkeling gear and beach stuff, games and rackets, beautiful books and CD stereo collection--you really feel privileged to stay as a guest in this impeccable private duplex. It is perfectly clean when you arrive, and you feel like you want to keep it that way. The only downside? You hate to leave!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing.

This is a truly FABULOUS condo that I would highly recommend to everyone. My family stayed here for a week and really loved it. The owners are extremely nice, and everything they say in their written description is correct. The lanai is gorgeous, sporting an accurate hand-made tile picture of the Big Island, and the ocean is a stone's throw away, with a great view of sunset and the waves crashing into the lava rocks below. We ate nearly all of our meals there, sometimes bringing in food cooked on one of the many barbecues available on the grounds, and lingered there long after sunset, listening to the waves. The condo is very well furnished, with comfortable beds, a full kitchen, washer and drier, TV, good bathrooms, and a family/dining room combination. There's also a lot of games and books, as well as beach toys, snorkeling equipment, boogie boards, lawn chairs, lava shoes, and other equipment for beach activities. Complimentary WiFi is available, so you can look up and plan things to do, check your email, etc. The pools and hot tubs are great, and there are tennis courts as well. There's also an excellent walking trail right outside the complex, next to the shore. If you like to play golf, the golf course is right next door. The only thing lacking is a sandy beach, but there's a good one just a short drive away (Magic Sands beach); also, a few minutes' drive brings you to the most well-known snorkeling bay on the island. Convenient grocery stores and restaurants are also very nearby -- you don't have to go all the way to Kona (though it's not very far away, if you do want to go there for more variety). The complex has a guard at the entry, but visitors are allowed if invited, and there's parking available to them. All of the units in this complex look nice, but this particular one is probably in the best location and is very well cared for. The rates are excellent and the owners are very accommodating. We have stayed here twice and hope to do so again! It's definitely a great place.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

My wife and I spent 6 glorious days at this condo. Peace, quiet and comfortis a good description of this property. The lanai, as you can see, is on the water and faces West. The sunsets are spectacular as you enjoy your adult beverage and/or dinner on the lanai. In fact we ate most of our meals on the lanai. The condo is very clean and comfortable. The condominium grounds are clean and well kep. You have access to two swimming pools on the grounds. If you have rented a car there is easy accessability to shopping and cinema. We spent a couple of days visiting the Volcano National Park and Hilo. There are some very nice restaurants that the owners have listed and well worth the effort to visit. All in all, a very nice and relaxing visit.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing.
Owner response: Becky and I are pleased that you enjoyed your vacation at our condo. One correction: There are three pools at Kanaloa, not two. The main pool is next to the ocean. The pool closest to our condo is for adults only. Each pool has an adjoining hot spa.

We stayed here for the 1st time about 10 years ago and have gone back twice since (ie, anytime we are in Hawaii), including last month. Each visit gets better. The owners have done a great job of updating things over the years and keeping the condo in very good shape. As usual the place was spotless when we arrived. The listing location on the website is very accurate which led us here the first time. The lanai overlooks the ocean which is about 20 yards away. This is a perfect spot for eating pupus, grilled fresh fish, and watching the sunset. It doesn't get any better than this. We even saw a green flash last time. (Green flash for those who have never seen one has to do with the setting of the sun and is not a unique native fish. :-)) Would highly recommend this condo to anyone interested in going to the Big Island. We ate out at the small French restaurant nearby, La Bourgogne, for the first time and it was wonderful. Excellent food, perfect service, and nice wine list.Recommended for: Age 55+, people with disabilities, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing.

About the owner: This is primarily a vacation home for us which we rent out when we and our family are not using it. I am a retired airline pilot having flown the Hawaiian route from the Mainland for years. My family lived on Oahu for 35 years. My wife is a retired school teacher, now tutoring out of our home. We have a small farm on the Central Coast of California near San Luis Obispo. We raise most of our own fruit and vegetables.
The Unique Benefits at this Condo:
Becky and I find peace and relaxation just being at our condo. There is always the gentle sound of the surf just outside the windows. In the winter we watch the humpback whales from our lanai. We're usually snorkeling at nearby Kahalu'u Beach by 8AM, before the bay gets crowded, and while the sea turtles are still feeding. A 45 minute snorkel /swim, back to the condo to clean up and then a leisurely breakfast of fresh papaya, pineapple, Hawaiian sweet bread and Kona coffee out on the lanai watching the waves. It's a nice way to start off the day.
