Aloha Estate: a Taste of the Tropics in Carmel
- Minimum stay:N/A

- Wheel chair accessible:Yes
It took 2 years and $5,000,000 to recreate this British empire estate worthy of Tommy Bahama. Whether it is the flowering vines on the main residence or the giant ferns shading the cottage/catering center you will wonder if indeed the tropic splendor of 1880's Singapore has come to coastal elegance that is Carmel by the Sea.
Our long time business clients or new friends can stroll the quiet rose gardens or do some entertaining of their own on the the over 2,000 sq. ft. of stone patios. Is it the tropical cabana or the slate roof lines that provide the perfect backdrop to an corporate gathering or a 50th anniversary? Is it a catered dinner or "smores" at the outdoor fireplace with the kids that gives pause in the lush surroundings to contemplate the blessings of success?
A tiger-stripped stone walkway guides you from the off street parking to the carved glass of the Mahogany front door. As you enter the main residence you are surrounded by the comfortable elegance that at once says "Wow" and also "welcome home". Our upper drive parking accommodates three vehicles easily while the lower drive preferred drop off allows all guests easy access.
The gourmet kitchen featuring a sub-zero refrigerator and Viking 6 burner range presents our guests with their first dilemma! Should I prepare the evenings offering myself? Perhaps free range chicken with local chanterelle mushrooms and glass of 2006 Robert Talbot Pinot?. But then again you're in Carmel home to some of the best restaurants in the world. You take the 10 min. walk to downtown Carmel by the Sea where world class dining awaits!
Throughout the main residence one's expectations are well accommodated. The flicker of wood burning fireplaces is seen in the kitchen and living room, while the library/video room can be shut off for viewing privacy and "quiet" for the rest of the house. Our "Boat room" doubles as a game/fitness area while also having a conference option hosting twenty attendees. With over 70% of the residence accessible from the main floor with no steps and preferred drop off via our lower drive all guests are comfortable.
There are 2 suites on the main floor. The "Queen room" done in shades of cinnamon and coral features a queen bed, private bath and wood burning fireplace. For those whose life experience now exceeds their stair climbing talents, this is a great suite. Across the hall, the Twin room has the flexibility of either 2 twin beds or a single king. Either way the claw foot tub is the perfect spot to end a day at the links of "Pebble" or shopping on "Ocean Ave".
The upstairs suites neither disappoint. Morning is greeted in the "Birds Nest" with a birds eye view of the Monterey Pines. A king bed, fireplace and Jacuzzi tub make the evenings pleasant as well. The other suite, "Bridge room" - it literally bridges the 2 halves of the home - is our largest suite with a king bed, gas fireplace, Jacuzzi tub and queen sofa bed. Both suites offer private slate decks overlooking the forested patios, whispering "more wine and cheese, please".
Aloha Estate is located off of Ocean Avenue. Due to its location it often escapes the chilly afternoon fog, yet is only a 10 minute walk to downtown. In line with Carmel Valley, the Estate benefits from its warming breezes, allowing one to enjoy a BBQ on its stone patios or a lounge with a good book. Its expansive gardens back to the Carmel Mission trial, a 15 minute stroll away!

My family rented this home for a long weekend and birthday celebration. There were 6 adults and 4 children and plenty of room to spare. The house was great in terms of layout and also the furnishings were wonderful. The beds were very comfortable and the kitchen was well stocked with cooking tools. Everything was very clean and well maintained. Walking to town was as advertised, about 10 minutes and so we walked into Carmel every day at least once. The owner was very helpful with the rental process and also made some great recommendations for restuarants and things to do while we were there. We have rented houses through VRBO for years and this definitely was one of the best. We would all go back and highly recommend.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

We recently had a wonderful family reunion in Carmel. Two of my three children live in Calif. and rather than asking them to travel to the midwest, the midwesterners traveled West. Our home, Aloha Estate, was even better than we had hoped. The house was beautiful, very clean and we were made to feel very much at home. We grilled each night, choosing to eat in rather than go out. We spent time at the beach and explored the beautiful town of Carmel. We all said we would enjoy staying at this home again.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

Located on a quiet street with easy access to the best of Carmel, Aloha Estate exudes elegance and good taste from the minute you pull into the driveway. My wife, daughter and I were proud to welcome my in-laws to join us for a few days during our week at this large, comfortable house, which perfectly accomodated everyone in the group. Indeed, this singular home offers an unusual degree of flexibility, allowing our family to enjoy indoor and outdoor spaces. We loved sitting outside by the fireplace, lounging inside for conversation or watching videos--and the kitchen and dining areas were so functional and attractive we happily found ourselves eating in for most meals. Every room has been furnished to optimize both comfort and beauty. Aloha Estate's owners have an appropriately gracious spirit that is apparent throughout the home and in all our dealings with them. Of course, we also ventured out to enjoy the Monterey Bay Aquarium, strolled to Carmel's Forest Theater for a charming outdoor production of Peter and the Wolf, hiked Point Lobos, shopped and dined downtown, and enjoyed Carmel beach, absolutely one of California's finest beaches. Overall, we enjoyed Aloha Estate so much, we extended our stay as long as we possibly could. Highly recommended!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2

There are not enough superlatives to describe the Aloha Estate. The house is exceptional and the grounds have a natural setting that makes them warm and inviting. The pictures and description do not do the estate justice. We stayed at the estate for our daughter Maureen’s wedding. The wedding was Saturday and we stayed at the estate from Thursday through Saturday night. The preparations for the wedding were at the estate. The estate was large enough to house us, Maureen, her two sisters and their husbands and children. We were looking for a house rather than a hotel so that the family could be together prior to the wedding. We started looking in the Carmel area and arranged to view several houses. Maureen was with us when we viewed the first house. The house was nothing like that shown in the pictures and was not well maintained so that it was immediately rejected. Maureen was not available when we viewed the second house which was the Aloha Estate. When we pulled into the driveway, we knew immediately that we did not have to look further. We put our deposit down immediately. Maureen had not seen the estate other than the pictures and given the condition of the first house wondered how it would really look, Photoshop being what it is. She was also concerned that the photographer may not have the lighting and settings that Maureen wanted for the pre-wedding pictures. We pulled into the driveway and Maureen was smiling by the time the family reached the front door. After opening the front door, the only thought from the family was “Wow”, there was no question that the house and settings were perfect. The house sits on a hill and the rooms look down the hill to the patios and the large trees that shade the house and patios. The kitchen is first rate. The wine refrigerator was stocked with the wine prices on the bottles. The cabinets contained stores for meals that we could use. The smallest amenity was thoughtfully done such as the proximity sensors that turned on the bathroom lights when someone entered and membership cards to enter the Monterey Aquarium. The upstairs bedrooms have private patios and commodious bathrooms. Although we occupied the master upstairs bedroom, our Jacuzzi tub was experienced by others including Maureen on the night before her wedding. The Aloha Estate set up the whole wedding weekend for us so that the entire wedding from beginning to end was one of the most memorable experiences of our lifetime.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, tourists without a car, girls getaway, sightseeing.

The house is fantastic and we had a great time in Carmel over the New Years weekend. The termostats took a little getting use to - it was either too hot in the kitchen or to cold in the TV room - and the dish washer was broken. Aside from those two minor problems everything else was perfect. The house is very large - we had seven adults in our party - with plenty of room to spread out - and the landscaping is great. We would definitely recommend this property to others.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway.
Owner response: Ken, Thanks for being a great renter. A pleasure meeting your wife and yourself and your friends. And the house was kept immaculate. Sorry, about the dishwasher, though it is a new Miele, the pump broke down. Being New Year's Eve, we couldn't get the repair guy out. It was fixed the next work day...but a little late for your stay !

We drove down to this home from the Bay area, needing some respite from our everyday busy life. Three generations of our family of 11 gathered together at this gorgeous, immaculate property for an amazing week of rest, play, and relaxation. As other reviewers have described, every room in the house is like a resort. For our entire family to be able to reconnect in such a beautiful setting at an unhurried pace was a great blessing! These are some of the things we enjoyed while vacationing here: hiking at Big Sur and Point Lobos, swimming and boogie boarding at Carmel Beach, reading in the beautifully landscaped backyard patio among towering redwoods and native plants, visiting the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Old Fisherman's Wharf and Cannery Row, strolling in the quaint downtown area, and dining at excellent eateries, though we much preferred to cook in the gourmet kitchen or grill outside and relax by the charming outdoor fireplace. This was definitely a five star family vacation for all of us, including grandma!Recommended for: People with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, tourists without a car, girls getaway, sightseeing.

When our daughter and new son-in-law returned from their honeymoon stay at the Aloha Cottage we heard, first-hand, how perfectly appointed this residence is. They loved the private-like setting away from the tourist-filled downtown while at the same time being just a ten minute walk to the downtown. When we travel we love being in an area that makes us feel more like locals than tourists so we chose this spot for ourselves on our recent vacation to Carmel. The Aloha Estate is exquisite in architectural design and much attention has been put to every detail from comfort to bringing the beautiful Carmel scenery inside. We loved the way the cypress landscaped and generous property is a place you could easily entertain guests as well as get lost in pure relaxation on your own. Our only distraction was deciding if we should stay in and relish the gorgeous working kitchen (I love to cook and bake) or dine out at one of Carmel's many restaurants. And, if you are a tea lover, like me, you will enjoy the extensive collection of teas to choose from. A highlight of our time in Carmel was an easy two mile hike - just steps from our door - to the Carmel Mission followed by a walk to the Tuck Box on 7th street for a yummy breakfast and their own style of scones. The four mile round trip put our added calories in perspective. And, as much as we loved sitting at the beach we found ourselves just as happy soaking up the Carmel Valley sunshine while reading from one of the several balconies at the Aloha Estate. Coming to the Aloha Estate is every bit a destination as Carmel is. We look forward to returning!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, tourists without a car, girls getaway, sightseeing.

Our family stayed in this beautiful, jaw dropping home! It was a "whole" family trip including aunts, uncles, cousins and of grandma and grandpa. THere were 18 total and the home was more than adequate to handle all of us. We loved every moment. Every room had its own feel and theme making it feel like your personal room. The common areas were great and allowed for all of us to sit and talk and share some fun memories.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, pet owners, families with young children, tourists without a car, girls getaway, sightseeing.

My wife and I would like to share our recent experience attending a wedding reception at this beautiful estate. If you are looking for a spectacular setting in California, Carmel by the Sea offers you an unique opportunity. If you have never been to Carmel, it is a World Class Destination, and you should really go! The natural beauty, the coast line of Big Sur, Pebble Beach, The Monterey Bay, the Art Galleries, the gourmet restaurants and many wineries, the white sand beaches will all make for a magical experience. If you want your stay to be that once in a lifetime experience, than consider this special home, The Aloha Estate. The property is in CARMEL, and is grand yet comfortable and casual, due to the Island influence. It is as if the home was taken apart in the Cotswalds in England, transported to Carmel, then Tommy Bahama himself designed the interior! The combination made for a perfect setting for the wedding reception! We call it: California Casual Living! We were surronded by the unique Monterey Pines and their sweet fragrance, the cool ocean breezes, the perfectly clear blue skies, plenty of delicious food, excellent wine from a local winery. The natural beauty of the surroundings was enhanced by the music of the string trio from the Monterey Symphony. It made us feel as though we were on a movie set, because life is just not that perfect. What a beautiful place for any special occasion!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, tourists without a car, girls getaway, sightseeing.

Our time there was so amazing and it allowed for our family to reacquaint in a very special way. The home itself was stunning and the ability to comfortably fit all of us is a rare find. Each of the rooms was like a vacation in itself! The detailed craftsmanship throughout the whole house really displayed the type of attention to detail that is needed to create such an incredible and comfortable environment. Minutes to the beach, downtown, grocery store, and outdoor activities, the location of the house was perfect! Most importantly, the time we spent in your home brought our family even closer together. Family means so much to each of us and to have the opportunity to be with all 18 family members on the same property, in such a beautiful area, was truly a wonderful blessing! Why the Owner Chose Carmel By the Sea:
Prior to purchasing the property my wife and I had visited Carmel for almost 30 years. Being a real estate developer in N. California and Hawaii, I was "picky" regarding what we were looking for in a high end house. We started seriously looking 5 years ago, when my wife found this property it had actually been taken off the market. Though it was in need of much updating I loved the location and my wife appreciated the interior "bones". With our background of developing in Hawaii we decided to do a rendition of a British empire "fusion", our version of British estates found throughout Singapore, Hong Kong and the Philippines. 2 years and $5,000,000 later, we hope that we succeeded!
The Unique Benefits at this Estate:
The "top" ten experiences of "Aloha Estate" 1. Smores with the grandkids at the outdoor fireplace 2. Morning coffee on one of the upstairs decks 3. Gourmet cooking while a fire sizzles in the kitchen fireplace 4. A glass of Rombauer Chardonnay any where 5. Soaking in the claw foot tub after a round at Pebble 6. Dinner downtown at Le Bicyclette 7. Basking in the morning sunlight of the Living room 8. Finishing a good book lounging among the gardens 9. A Walk downtown 10. Ending the day with a cup of tea from our extensive tea collection
