About the property

Apartment, 1 Bedroom + Den, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

Welcome to Homestead Farm South. We are located in the Blue Ridge Mountain community of Pisgah Forest, only four miles from the entrance to the Pisgah National Forest and just ten minutes from the town of Brevard and the Brevard Music Center. Nearby sites include Sliding Rock, Looking Glass Falls, and the Cradle of Forestry. Also nearby is the Dupont State Forest, including Hooker, High, and Triple Falls. Other area sites include Biltmore Estate, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Carl Sandburg's historic home, and Flat Rock Playhouse.

If you are tired of tiny hotel rooms with heat and air that are impossible to set, noisy halls, the trip to the Laundromat when you'd rather be sight-seeing, having to eat every meal out, not having a place to store the fish you just caught, and all the other things you dread about a vacation, then this is the place for you. Leave home without leaving the comforts of home!

We offer a one bedroom, air conditioned suite in an upstairs apartment with a private entrance that accommodates up to four people. Completed in 2000, the apartment has a fully-equipped kitchen, bathroom with bathtub, washer and dryer, living room with a queen-size sleeper sofa, separate bedroom with a king-size bed and plenty of closet space, and a sundeck. The apartment is on a 22-acre farm with magnificent views that borders the French Broad River. Our farm animals include horses, goats, sheep, chickens, and turkeys, as well as Great Pyrenees dogs.

About Ken & Kim Burton

Homestead Farm South is named after Ken's ancestral home in Connecticut, Homestead Farm Dairy. When Ken and Kim moved to the mountains of North Carolina, they decided they would do something unconventional for a couple that had lived in the suburbs; they bought farm land and built Homestead Farm South. Ken wanted bison, Kim wanted goats and sheep, so they have goats and sheep, as well as a horse, chickens, turkeys, a donkey, and guardian dogs.

Ken & Kim Burton purchased this apartment in 2000

Why Ken & Kim Burton chose Smoky Mountains

Ken and Kim spent many months looking at properties, and they fell in love with the Little River valley area. Ken found this property when a colleague at work told him friends of his had property for sale, and when his coworker took him to show him the property, it was exactly where he and Kim had said they wanted to live.

What makes this apartment unique

Kim found the house plan and they made some changes to make it, including adding the apartment over the garage. Originally intended for visiting family and friends, or for a future Brevard College student willing to live there in exchange for helping out, they decided to try using it as a vacation rental at the encouragement of their contractor and with the assistance of a nearby B&B. It was a decision they have not regretted because they have had many wonderful people stay there through the years

Pleasant and peaceful stay

Ken and Kim are very friendly and helpful. Our kids enjoyed the farm, playing and petting all the animals in the farm and they had fun with owner's grandsons. Its an awesome stay after a long time for us.

Fabulous, serene, and welcoming

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this charming apartment for 2 weeks while exploring Pisgah Forest and Brevard. Kim and Ken were the most welcoming and wonderful hosts; they invited us to explore their farm, included us in the evening campfire joy with their grandson and S'mores, and shared insights and recommendations of the area highlights. We felt as though we made new best friends! The apartment was clean and beautifully decorated, and provided for everything we needed. The evening view of the sunset and bucolic setting from the upstairs porch gave us a feeling of being gentlemen farmers. It is close and convenient to hiking, waterfalls, restaurants, and the towns of Brevard and Asheville. We highly recommend this vacation arrangement for the hosts' lovely welcome, the comfort of the apartment, and an authentic experience of Blue Ridge living. We'll be back, and pass along the recommendation to friends.

The apartment was very nice and cozy. It was very clean and had everything we needed for a wonderful stay. The location near Brevard, Hendersonville and DuPont Forest made it ideal for outdoor recreation. We would love to return again sometime.

Great location!

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay here so much! The apartment was very clean, and the king sized bed was very comfortable. There is a small porch which we used every evening during our stay. It not only gave us a view of the sunset, but we were entertained by the myriad of farm animals belonging to the farm. The owners, Ken and Kim were very friendly and helpful. Kim keeps a very clean apartment!

The only suggestion I would make is that you bring your own media...there were no books, magazines, or DVDs in the apartment, and the Satellite TV offered very basic channels, so not a lot of variety to choose from. I also missed seeing a guest registry which I always find to be very helpful when looking for good places to visit nearby, or for good restaurant recommendations. Guests tend to share that kind of information a lot.

The location is perfect! Very close to Brevard and Hendersonville, both offer quaint downtowns with lots of restaurants. Blue Ridge Parkway access is about a 45 minute drive. Fantastic hiking and waterfalls all within a 30 minute drive. Close to Pisgah National Forest, DuPont and Gorges State Parks!

Owner's Response: Vicki, We're glad you enjoyed your stay! We always appreciate having our guests enjoy the beautiful evening views while sitting on the deck. It's especially entertaining watching the animals and their routine at feeding time. Thank you for taking the time to review our property. We value your feedback and response. It has always been our greatest effort to meet and exceed the expectations of our guests upon their arrival to the farm. We have updated information on our area for our guests. Ken and I always enjoy sharing our own experiences and information about the area. We pride ourselves with our hospitality, friendliness and cleanliness. We hope to see you again in the future. Thanks for visiting us! Kim and Ken
