About the property

Apartment, 1 Bedroom + Den, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

Welcome to Homestead Farm South. We are located in the Blue Ridge Mountain community of Pisgah Forest, only four miles from the entrance to the Pisgah National Forest and just ten minutes from the town of Brevard and the Brevard Music Center. Nearby sites include Sliding Rock, Looking Glass Falls, and the Cradle of Forestry. Also nearby is the Dupont State Forest, including Hooker, High, and Triple Falls. Other area sites include Biltmore Estate, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Carl Sandburg's historic home, and Flat Rock Playhouse.

If you are tired of tiny hotel rooms with heat and air that are impossible to set, noisy halls, the trip to the Laundromat when you'd rather be sight-seeing, having to eat every meal out, not having a place to store the fish you just caught, and all the other things you dread about a vacation, then this is the place for you. Leave home without leaving the comforts of home!

We offer a one bedroom, air conditioned suite in an upstairs apartment with a private entrance that accommodates up to four people. Completed in 2000, the apartment has a fully-equipped kitchen, bathroom with bathtub, washer and dryer, living room with a queen-size sleeper sofa, separate bedroom with a king-size bed and plenty of closet space, and a sundeck. The apartment is on a 22-acre farm with magnificent views that borders the French Broad River. Our farm animals include horses, goats, sheep, chickens, and turkeys, as well as Great Pyrenees dogs.

About Ken & Kim Burton

Homestead Farm South is named after Ken's ancestral home in Connecticut, Homestead Farm Dairy. When Ken and Kim moved to the mountains of North Carolina, they decided they would do something unconventional for a couple that had lived in the suburbs; they bought farm land and built Homestead Farm South. Ken wanted bison, Kim wanted goats and sheep, so they have goats and sheep, as well as a horse, chickens, turkeys, a donkey, and guardian dogs.

Ken & Kim Burton purchased this apartment in 2000

Why Ken & Kim Burton chose Pisgah Forest

Ken and Kim spent many months looking at properties, and they fell in love with the Little River valley area. Ken found this property when a colleague at work told him friends of his had property for sale, and when his coworker took him to show him the property, it was exactly where he and Kim had said they wanted to live.

What makes this apartment unique

Kim found the house plan and they made some changes to make it, including adding the apartment over the garage. Originally intended for visiting family and friends, or for a future Brevard College student willing to live there in exchange for helping out, they decided to try using it as a vacation rental at the encouragement of their contractor and with the assistance of a nearby B&B. It was a decision they have not regretted because they have had many wonderful people stay there through the years

My wife and I made last minute plans to visit south west N.C. I contacted Kim and Ken through VRBO and arranged my stay. The only word to describe the rest of my exprence and stay is ( Perfect )...!! Both Kim and Ken are great people that make you feel at home on their small farm. The apartment is clean, neat and furnished perfectly. Our days were spent exploring the area and then looking forward to returning to the homestead to sit on the small porch to watching the animals. We were sad to leave and definitely want to return. Thank you Kim and Ken.

Owner's Response: Wade, thank you so much for your generous and kind review. Ken and I enjoyed hearing about all of your daily adventures and appreciation for the wonderful opportunities for outdoor recreation we have in our area. We were especially grateful for your keen eyes when Sierra, the goat, escaped from the pasture! We hope you will return to visit us and to explore the area again. We're saving the bottle of wine you left us for Saturday, our anniversary! Thank you again for choosing Homestead Farm South! Kim and Ken

Owner's Response: Geoff, we're glad you enjoyed your stay. I wish the rain had not started to fall as we were feeding the lambs their bottles. My grandsons wanted to introduce your children to the donkey, sheep and goats. We look forward to having the kids meet the animals and learn more about farm living next time. Thank you, we appreciated your business! Kim and Ken

Great country retreat

  • 5 of 5

My wife, daughter and I stayed here for a few days during 4th of July week. Perfect spot after long days of Blue Ridge Parkway touring, water falling, and hiking. The apartment was immaculate, cool, spacious and modern. The highlight though is the property. The farm and the animals were a great treat for all of us. Our 9 year old daughter even got to bottle feed some baby lambs! Very conveniently located to town of Brevard and all the natural beauty and stuff to do in the forest and parkway.

Hope to come back soon!!

Warm, welcoming, and a brand new baby lamb too!

  • 5 of 5

Warm and welcoming, perfectly priced, and exactly what we needed for an impromptu Father's Day weekend getaway with activities planned nearby. Shortly before we arrived a baby lamb had been born on the farm, and Kim and Ken graciously offered a quick peek at the newest member of the barn, as well as the chance to say hello to the rest of her companions (including a loyal donkey named Cricket that stood watch nearby), something our 11 year old son especially appreciated. Thank you again, no doubt we'll be back!
