Authentic Cape Cod Saltbox with 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, and detached cottage for 2.
The Elisha Howland Saltbox provides your opportunity to experience the unmatched essence of a true 'Olde Cape Cod' home. We offer a restored antique Saltbox with 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. There is a separate rental opportunity on the property for two more guests in the detached cottage, though this is only available to guests in the main house, for an additional fee which is listed below.
Our 1824 home is located in one of the most historic areas of Brewster. Small on size but big on charm, you will see many of the original features, such as the 'ladder' stairs, the old floorboards, the wavy glass windows carefully preserved, and a working replica of the original fireplace. Lovingly brought back to life, this restored antique home truly is a home away from home, complemented with all the modern comforts - fully equipped kitchen, dishwasher, basement washer and dryer, cable TV, DVD player, and wifi. We are open year round and welcome you for a visit, whether it's for a weekend, a week, a month or more. We welcome weekend guests during the winter, spring, and fall, and occasionally can accommodate stays of less than one week during the summer.
Located in a quiet residential area of the Sea Captain's town of Brewster, our home has a spacious yard featuring two flower gardens and a shade garden with a stone patio and sitting area. Adjacent to the patio is a water feature with a gurgling stream, making a lovely spot to sit and enjoy a cup of morning coffee or perhaps a glass of wine at the end of the day.
The detached cottage is a separate rental, which may be rented for additional charge by the week or for a shorter period, with a two night minimum stay. We are delighted to offer this space to our guests who rent the main house, to be used by families who would like to bring a grandparent or two, or by couples who enjoy vacationing together, but also want to respect each other's space. The cottage offers a queen bed, small sitting area with microwave, dorm-style refrigerator, TV, and a full bathroom with shower. There is a screened porch with a patio table for two. The cottage rate is $85/night for a minimum stay of 2 nights, or $525/week during the summer season. Please contact us for off-season per week rates. Daily rates remain the same. Please note that the cottage is not available as a separate and primary rental.

Jane is a Brewster native, whose family heritage dates back to the earliest Pilgrim days. Her ancestors were among the first Pilgrims to settle in Brewster. She knows the Cape and New England well, and is always delighted to help with your trip planning.
Jane purchased this House in 2002
Why Jane chose West Brewster
We were thrilled when we were offered this property by the previous owner's family. It was their family's treasured Cape Escape for the past 50 or so years. Originally, the home was owned by the same family from the time it was built to approximately the 1930s.
What makes this House unique
Our home provides a rare glimpse into a simpler life in Brewster almost 200 years ago - but without the hardships that were endured in the olden days.

Cozy winter getaway!
Jane was so great about booking a last-minute stay for my boyfriend and myself for New Years Eve weekend. Even though we showed up late at night in the snow, she was happy to leave the lights on and the key accessible for us! We loved the steep ladder-style staircase (as two sailors, it reminded us of a boat!) and the quirky touches to the antique house, as well as the book explaining how it was renovated. Even though the house is old, it does not lack in modern comfort- we absolutely loved the forced-air heating system, which kept everything warm even in the intense January chill, and the appliances were great for us to cook a big New Years dinner. The bed was comfortable and the house would comfortably sleep multiple couples easily. We can't wait to go back soon, and hopefully when the weather warms up as well!
We had a wonderful time, as always!
My husband & I have been making a yearly or bi-yearly visit to the little house for several years now. We have always been pleased by the comfort of the house and the beauty of Jane’s beautiful gardens. We just enjoyed another beautiful fall weekend as Jane’s guests and came away refreshed and looking forward to our next visit. You can’t wish for a better hostess than Jane.
Having spent more than 25 years of summer vacations at my family's home a few miles away, I knew the location is close to many wonderful opportunities to experience the beauty of the Cape. Aside from proximity to some of the country’s most beautiful beaches, like Cold Storage (2 miles away), this historic saltbox is close to many entertainment venues and terrific restaurants. The cottage is charming and well equipped. The grounds ofter a retreat-like setting for morning coffee, reading and appreciating the beautifully maintained gardens. The guest cottage offered the opportunity to enjoy time with friends and family while maintaining a healthy privacy. Our guests were very impressed. Finally, Jane was welcoming host from our first emails and telephone conversations to our parting words on the final day.
As usual, a fantastic stay
The house is perfect for a couple to stay in or just to come back for sleep. From breakfast in the garden to all-day bike rides, to post taco beers and watching tv, we love this place.
The house was delightful! Attention to historical detail was amazing.
Thank you so much! We are so glad you enjoyed the house for what it is....an authentic Cape Cod home much loved for nearly 100 years by the original family. We love it now, and the gardens are our reward. Please come again!
Well Maintained and Cozy Cottage
What a wonderful, well stocked, and cozy cottage! Jane made sure I had everything I needed for my three-day stay on the Cape in May. Even though it was just me, I could see that this little place could comfortably hold up to six people. So charming! I would recommend this property to anyone looking to get away from the bustle of the larger towns on the Cape. The quiet, the nature, the gorgeous yard! This place was perfect.
Heather, thank you so much! It was our pleasure to host you, and we appreciate the loving care you gave to our little house. Please come again. We will welcome you back whenever you can come! Jane
