About John Thomas
For Stacy and I building this cabin was an effort to create a very unique retreat. We found the perfect setting; a five acre estate lot within a gated 200 acre nature Preserve, that boasted a view which even the locals described as the best they had ever seen. We then hired a team to travel to Pennsylvania to dismantle and retrieve the materials from two 150+ year old barns. One actually stood on the battlefield at Gettysburg, but had to be removed to make way for the new visitor's center. The other had been built by Amish pioneers. All of the timbers had been laboriously hand hewed with broad axes. We carefully planned each detail to create the feeling of an old 1800s cabin, while incorporating modern conveniences. Upon his first visit, a technician who came to install the satellite dish and receiver commented 'I'll bet you had a challenge getting this old place up to code'. I replied that it was a new cabin, to which he responded with dismay, 'you built it like this?'. Mission accomplished.
John Thomas purchased this Cabin in 2007
Why John Thomas chose Sapphire
Around the chic mountain village of Cashiers, North Carolina, (10 minutes from the cabin) fashionable development keeps pace with the growing demand for vacation and retirement homes. Easily understandable considering Cashiers is located in the waterfall area of the Blue Ridge Mountains, where high elevation lakes, streams, and rivers abound. Adding to the natural attractions that beckon the thousands of affluent, seasonal residents (plus a multitude of visitors) are notable golf courses, trendy shops, fine dining establishments, and tennis resorts. Asheville, home of the Biltmore Estate, is a cultural hub not to be missed, less than an hour drive away.
What makes this Cabin unique
Do you desire the peace, quite, and solitude of being by yourself, with only the splendor of nature and your loved one(s) in the mountains, but still very close to fine dining, upscale shopping, outdoor activities, and resort amenities? We did, and it was a most difficult combination to find. Sapphire Heaven is the result of our quest to create that rare combination. As a bonus we even have a private waterfall within a short hike.

We enjoyed our stay very much. John was very responsive on the front end with information regarding the cabin and the surrounding area. There were great restaurants to choose from or you can just sit back and relax at the cabin and prepare your on dinner. I would caution, after 5 inches of rain it might not be the time to try and hike down to the falls. (We made it there and back, but it wore us out trying to get back up. Thank goodness for the ropes and ladder)
PERFECT IN EVERY DETAIL
We stayed five nights in Sapphire Heaven and we felt at home as soon as we entered. The attention to detail, artistry and love that went into this home is truly beyond description. They have maintained the rustic feel right down to the working old fashion rotary phone. You can spend hours admiring the old timbers and every stone used to construct the cabin. When you can manage to exit the home onto the deck and surrounding stone sidewalks you are equally entranced. The views in every direction are breathtaking, from sunrise to sunset the surrounding sky is continually changing and the picture opportunities are endless. There truly are no pictures are capture the beauty just know that what you will experience will exceed your expectations.
And as if all this wasn't enough...there is a PRIVATE waterfall. We celebrated my birthday there with champagne under the waterfall while enjoying the peacefulness of the water and the quiet of the surrounding forest. The hike there is not recommended unless you are a skilled hiker. You must be very cautious and hiking spikes recommended. With that said, my husband and I made the trip after a lot of rain, so when dry its completely doable for anyone in reasonable shape. We had a blast going down and coming up because the payoff in both directions is so worth the journey.
When you can manage to break away from the home there's amazing hiking, waterfalls, shopping and restaurants within a few short miles. We ended up cooking a lot at home but we did have dinner at the Liberty Kitchen and Bar, which was absolutely delicious. We also stopped into the Ugly Dog Pub for a beer after a hike. The local beer options were great and the food equally as good. Plan a few days as there are endless options. But plan time to simply stay and enjoy Sapphire Heaven, thankfully, it rained two days so we could slow down and just take all her beauty in.
Thanks so much for the detailed review. We're so glad your stay was fantastic. That was the intent of our efforts and your recognition is a reward much appreciated.
I must admit that even after 10 years, a trip to the cabin, which sits on the front row of one nature's magnificent creations, brings into clear focus how insignificant our current stress is in comparrison to the overall granduer of the planet on which we live. Please come back when you can.
We had the most amazing stay at Sapphire Heaven! The house is the perfect “cabin” feel. Every single rustic detail was picked perfectly! And the view! Oh my word! Definitely heaven! The sunrise was breathtaking! We had a wonderful getaway and would love to visit again!
I'm so glad the property delivered what you expected or more. As many times as I've been there since 2006, I'm always awed...the historic timbers, the privacy, the unbelievable view, and God's best work as far as you can see. We are blessed to be the keepers of the property. Please come back. Every season has it's own magic.
Didn’t leave the property or turn on the tv for 3 days! The fireplace is amazing! The hike to the waterfall was well worth the few sore muscles the next day. We were looking for a true mountian getaway and we found it. Thanks for letting us enjoy your sapphire heaven.
We're so glad you enjoyed your stay! Please come back when you can.
Breathtaking hidden gem with tons of class and character
John and Stacy,
Thank you so much for opening your wonderful home to our family. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at your cabin. We had full intentions of lots of activities but after venturing way from the cabin, we were all eager to get back (even our 14 and 16 year old children which says a lot). The private waterfall was awesome. You and your wife did a wonderful job constructing your cabin. Such great attention to detail, all the way down to the inscription on the concrete at the solar panels ;). We sincerely thank you for the wonderful opportunity to create such great memories. We will definitely be back ASAP. Thanks again!!!!!!
Awwww, we so appreciate the confirmation that our guests feel the love we put into our art project. Of course what we put into it greatly pales in comparison to the magnificence of the natural, awesome splendor on display everywhere you look from the cabin. It's a place that heals the soul. Please return when you can.

The cabin is great. Attention to detail is outstanding. Owner is very accommodating.
Overall experience was great. The cabin is awesome. The property is wonderful with great views of the surrounding mountains and valley. You can tell that a lot of thought has gone into the property instruction notebook and instructions posted around the cabin. Made it very easy to use the property. The only negative was the direct TV was not working, but even that was documented in the notebook and at the end of the day not a big deal. I would recommend this property to anyone looking to get away to the mountains.
Darn!! In ten years of renting the cabin this is our first rating under 5 stars, ever...and all because DirecTv no showed on two scheduled equipment replacement appointments! Good news though; Dish Networks just installed our new HD dish and receiver yesterday, so all is well...and in High Definition!
Private Waterfall!: There is a spectacular waterfall that is about 150 yards from the cabin. The trail to it is steep in places, which makes it a difficult hike, but well worth the effort. The waterfall area is totally private and exclusively accessible from our cabin property. What is even more amazing is the fact that you can easily walk behind the falling water and stay totally dry. Naturally, I've named it Sapphire Heaven Falls. As you stand behind it, the top of the fall starts about 40 feet above your head from a bowl shaped rock outcropping, then falls twenty feet out from you, and ten feet below you to cascade steeply down the mountain. There is so much room under/behind the falls that you can have a picnic for the whole family. The falls are made private by the sheer walls above and below this plateau shelf. Amazing!
