About John Thomas

For Stacy and I building this cabin was an effort to create a very unique retreat. We found the perfect setting; a five acre estate lot within a gated 200 acre nature Preserve, that boasted a view which even the locals described as the best they had ever seen. We then hired a team to travel to Pennsylvania to dismantle and retrieve the materials from two 150+ year old barns. One actually stood on the battlefield at Gettysburg, but had to be removed to make way for the new visitor's center. The other had been built by Amish pioneers. All of the timbers had been laboriously hand hewed with broad axes. We carefully planned each detail to create the feeling of an old 1800s cabin, while incorporating modern conveniences. Upon his first visit, a technician who came to install the satellite dish and receiver commented 'I'll bet you had a challenge getting this old place up to code'. I replied that it was a new cabin, to which he responded with dismay, 'you built it like this?'. Mission accomplished.

John Thomas purchased this cabin in 2007

Why John Thomas chose Sapphire

Around the chic mountain village of Cashiers, North Carolina, (10 minutes from the cabin) fashionable development keeps pace with the growing demand for vacation and retirement homes. Easily understandable considering Cashiers is located in the waterfall area of the Blue Ridge Mountains, where high elevation lakes, streams, and rivers abound. Adding to the natural attractions that beckon the thousands of affluent, seasonal residents (plus a multitude of visitors) are notable golf courses, trendy shops, fine dining establishments, and tennis resorts. Asheville, home of the Biltmore Estate, is a cultural hub not to be missed, less than an hour drive away.

What makes this cabin unique

Do you desire the peace, quite, and solitude of being by yourself, with only the splendor of nature and your loved one(s) in the mountains, but still very close to fine dining, upscale shopping, outdoor activities, and resort amenities? We did, and it was a most difficult combination to find. Sapphire Heaven is the result of our quest to create that rare combination. As a bonus we even have a private waterfall within a short hike.

Amazing property

  • 5 of 5

Based on the previous reviews my wife and I were excited for a three night mountain getaway. Upon arriving I must say, NO words can accurately describe the beauty of this house and property. First off let me say the house was spotless which can be challenging in a natural mountain setting. Beyond the stunning beauty of the views, the attention to details in the building were unbelievable. You are taken back in time to a rustic mountain home with all of the amenities and comfort of modern day, the attention and effort to preserve the charm is noticeable. The location of the property worked for us with restaurants, shopping, golf all within a 10 min drive. Our only regret is not getting to use the gorgeous natural fireplace due to our visit being in July with warm temperatures.....maybe next time as we have already looked at future availability. Thank you for creating this special place and opening it up for visitors, truly incredible.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your kind review...really. Stacy and I so appreciate recognition for our creative efforts on the cabin, but the transcendent healing energy transferred to one’s soul from time spent there is way beyond our abilities. That’s why we share it. Yes, winter is just as amazing in its own way. Please come back.

Overall experience was great. The cabin is awesome. The property is wonderful with great views of the surrounding mountains and valley. You can tell that a lot of thought has gone into the property instruction notebook and instructions posted around the cabin. Made it very easy to use the property. The only negative was the direct TV was not working, but even that was documented in the notebook and at the end of the day not a big deal. I would recommend this property to anyone looking to get away to the mountains.

Owner's Response: Darn!! In ten years of renting the cabin this is our first rating under 5 stars, ever...and all because DirecTv no showed on two scheduled equipment replacement appointments! Good news though; Dish Networks just installed our new HD dish and receiver yesterday, so all is well...and in High Definition!

Private and Peaceful

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at Sapphire Heaven. Enjoying cool mornings and mountain views on the deck with coffee was wonderful. Sunrises were fantastic. We were looking for peace and quiet and we found it. The walk to the waterfall is a serious challenge unless you are in good shape, but it was worth it.

Private Waterfall!: There is a spectacular waterfall that is about 150 yards from the cabin. The trail to it is steep in places, which makes it a difficult hike, but well worth the effort. The waterfall area is totally private and exclusively accessible from our cabin property. What is even more amazing is the fact that you can easily walk behind the falling water and stay totally dry. Naturally, I've named it Sapphire Heaven Falls. As you stand behind it, the top of the fall starts about 40 feet above your head from a bowl shaped rock outcropping, then falls twenty feet out from you, and ten feet below you to cascade steeply down the mountain. There is so much room under/behind the falls that you can have a picnic for the whole family. The falls are made private by the sheer walls above and below this plateau shelf. Amazing!
