We had a lovely stay in this lovely and unique cottage. It's beautifully decorated and maintained. Very comfy bed - great location- large private back yard with hot tub. We would stay here again when in the area.

A month of calm, beauty and inspiration

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at the European Art Cottage for the entire month of August, 2009. A friend of mine joined me for the month and my husband and one of my sisters visited. We all had a wonderful time. The house is filled with artwork, beautiful Tiffany style lighting, chandeliers and much more. The kitchen had everything we needed and I loved the convection oven. The master bedroom with ensuite bathroom was amazingly comfortable and the backyard deck is a dream, including a great hot tub and magnificent sunsets. The living room is perfect for relaxing and catching some classic movies on TMC. Patrice was always exceptionally helpful and gave us recommendations for things to do and for restaurants.

The cottage is within easy walking distance to Lake Tomahawk and its trail around the lake. The Black Mountain golf course is very challenging (with one Par Six!) and is also minutes away. My husband loved the course. Black Mountain has excellent restaurants and interesting stores. The Seven Sisters Gallery should not be missed! Ashville is only a 20 minute ride and the Blue Ridge Parkway is easily accessible. We went to Chimney Rock State Park and the Arboretum, enjoyed the Black Mountain Sourwood Festival, and couldn't get enough of the inexpensive live music at the White Horse. We went to see a play at SART about Thomas Wolfe and toured the Thomas Wolfe home in Ashville. We went in search of the Black Mountain College, formed by Germans leaving Germany before World War II, and found it (the property is now a boys' camp in a sylvan setting). Although the college closed in the 1950s, it had a lasting effect on American art and dance throughout the country. Art is in the air in this part of the country.

Great place to stay, great location, so much to see and do in the midst of astounding natural beauty. I would recommend to friends and relatives and hope to return myself.

Lovely Visit!

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely visit to Black Mountain. Patrice was a wonderful host and we enjoyed her home and accommodations. Her house is beautiful and on a quiet street in Black Mountain. Patrice was very hospitable and kind. We enjoyed the hot tub on a cold night and our kids loved it too!

Best in Black Mountain

  • 5 of 5

I can't say enough good things about this house and the owner. Patrice was responsive, very attentive to every detail and gave us plenty of privacy. We loved everything about it. There is a small park within walking distance which includes a lake and is surrounded by a beautiful view of the mountains. Great place for a picnic and meeting locals. Many of the reviews address the artistic flair of the decor and I echo those comments. It was very comfortable. There is a dining table which seats six and an outdoor area which we enjoyed having coffee in the mornings. We traveled with a 16 year old and she loved having a "suite" which included a queen sized canopy bed, with great skylights to see the stars at night and a bathroom to herself. We enjoyed our space on the other side (master + bath) and the bed was very comfortable. It's a perfect layout for two couples. We used the outdoor jacuzzi every evening and enjoyed the crisp mountain air. We managed to cook a Thanksgiving day meal in the well equipped and impressive kitchen. There is plenty to do in Black Mountain and we enjoyed a lot of our meals at local restaurants. Met interesting artists and locals are helpful and friendly. Enjoyed visiting the Biltmore which is about 12-14 miles from this location. Hiking nearby and Asheville was a 20 minutes drive. I've used VRBO and Home Away many times and this is my favorite place so far. ENJOY!

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for your kind words. It is heartwarming when I hear visitors feel the same way I do about Black Mountain (voted "prettiest small town in the USA"). I have studied, lived and worked all over the world and find this town reminiscent of Europe. The view from the south side of Lake Tomahawk looking up at the Seven Sisters Mountains reminds me, especially in the winter when they are snow-capped, of Alpine villages. In the summer, as the mountains are green from top to bottom, I am reminded of Hawaii. The sky is the exact same color one will find in Honolulu, and the clouds are quite fluffy. Best of both worlds!

Nice little mountain town and very dog friendly. We had a very nice time during our stay. My in-laws really enjoyed looking at all the art work at the cottage.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a lovely review. Yes, Black Mountain is truly special, actually voted "prettiest small town in the USA"! I am especially gratified that your in-laws appreciated the art work and have sent a detailed description of one of the artist's works. Please come again. This town is beautiful year round.

About Patrice Tappe'

After having lived and worked 'all over the world,' I chose Black Mountain, NC for my permanent residence. It is reminiscent of Austria and Hawaii--green mountains from top to bottom in the summer, snow-capped in the winter. I was a well-known performer in Europe and visited Asheville in 1995 (the same year Prince Charles was guest at the Biltmore Estate). I am a collector of fine art and antiques, knowing many famous artists myself. Some of the collection is featured in the cottage and adds greatly to its artistic charm. I maintain close ties to Europe and still perform. My mother was a well-known French chef who taught me from a young age how to perform well in the kitchen. By special request I have catered for the Dalai Lama and for the State Department in Vienna, Austria. On occasion I cater for the cottage's guests.

Why Patrice Tappe' chose Black Mountain

The beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains area and nearby Asheville and Biltmore Estate is almost as remarkable as portions of Austria or Hawaii. Walking around Lake Tomahawk just down the street from the cottage reminds me, personally, of the walk around Lake Lucerne in Switzerland where I lived for one year. The water from our own reservoir here in Black Mountain is fresh and clean, the produce from the region's farmer markets meets the high standards of someone used to the best of European cuisine.

What makes this cottage unique

Location, location, location! Ideally situated. Walk down to lovely Lake Tomahawk with its charming walking path, free summer concerts and tennis courts, brand new swimming pool. Enjoy downtown Black Mountain's famous regional restaurants (pizza!) and unique jewelry, craft and furniture and antique shops. Drive minutes to the Blue Ridge Parkway, Asheville. Beautiful all seasons, a true hidden gem. On a rainy day stay in the cottage and enjoy the peace and quiet. The New York Times called Black Mountain a 'Haven.'
