About Patrice Tappe'

After having lived and worked 'all over the world,' I chose Black Mountain, NC for my permanent residence. It is reminiscent of Austria and Hawaii--green mountains from top to bottom in the summer, snow-capped in the winter. I was a well-known performer in Europe and visited Asheville in 1995 (the same year Prince Charles was guest at the Biltmore Estate). I am a collector of fine art and antiques, knowing many famous artists myself. Some of the collection is featured in the cottage and adds greatly to its artistic charm. I maintain close ties to Europe and still perform. My mother was a well-known French chef who taught me from a young age how to perform well in the kitchen. By special request I have catered for the Dalai Lama and for the State Department in Vienna, Austria. On occasion I cater for the cottage's guests.

Patrice Tappe' purchased this cottage in 2001

Why Patrice Tappe' chose Black Mountain

The beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains area and nearby Asheville and Biltmore Estate is almost as remarkable as portions of Austria or Hawaii. Walking around Lake Tomahawk just down the street from the cottage reminds me, personally, of the walk around Lake Lucerne in Switzerland where I lived for one year. The water from our own reservoir here in Black Mountain is fresh and clean, the produce from the region's farmer markets meets the high standards of someone used to the best of European cuisine.

What makes this cottage unique

Location, location, location! Ideally situated. Walk down to lovely Lake Tomahawk with its charming walking path, free summer concerts and tennis courts, brand new swimming pool. Enjoy downtown Black Mountain's famous regional restaurants (pizza!) and unique jewelry, craft and furniture and antique shops. Drive minutes to the Blue Ridge Parkway, Asheville. Beautiful all seasons, a true hidden gem. On a rainy day stay in the cottage and enjoy the peace and quiet. The New York Times called Black Mountain a 'Haven.'

Romantic, artistic, European vibe

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely stay in this lovely and unique cottage. It's beautifully decorated and maintained. Very comfy bed - great location- large private back yard with hot tub. We would stay here again when in the area.

A month of calm, beauty and inspiration

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at the European Art Cottage for the entire month of August, 2009. A friend of mine joined me for the month and my husband and one of my sisters visited. We all had a wonderful time. The house is filled with artwork, beautiful Tiffany style lighting, chandeliers and much more. The kitchen had everything we needed and I loved the convection oven. The master bedroom with ensuite bathroom was amazingly comfortable and the backyard deck is a dream, including a great hot tub and magnificent sunsets. The living room is perfect for relaxing and catching some classic movies on TMC. Patrice was always exceptionally helpful and gave us recommendations for things to do and for restaurants.

The cottage is within easy walking distance to Lake Tomahawk and its trail around the lake. The Black Mountain golf course is very challenging (with one Par Six!) and is also minutes away. My husband loved the course. Black Mountain has excellent restaurants and interesting stores. The Seven Sisters Gallery should not be missed! Ashville is only a 20 minute ride and the Blue Ridge Parkway is easily accessible. We went to Chimney Rock State Park and the Arboretum, enjoyed the Black Mountain Sourwood Festival, and couldn't get enough of the inexpensive live music at the White Horse. We went to see a play at SART about Thomas Wolfe and toured the Thomas Wolfe home in Ashville. We went in search of the Black Mountain College, formed by Germans leaving Germany before World War II, and found it (the property is now a boys' camp in a sylvan setting). Although the college closed in the 1950s, it had a lasting effect on American art and dance throughout the country. Art is in the air in this part of the country.

Great place to stay, great location, so much to see and do in the midst of astounding natural beauty. I would recommend to friends and relatives and hope to return myself.

Best staying in Black Mauntain

  • 5 of 5

I have been in Black Maintain several times in the past few years and I always had a very nice time. On this occasion the staying was superb! The attention to detail of Patrice, her hospitality and fine taste made all my family feel so special and welcome. I wish I had more time but I was so very happy to spend the little I had in her house and most of all in her company. This was a real treat. Grazie mille carissima!

Serendipity

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for two nights and just loved it. Patrice and Rick are great and very easy to work with. As wonderful as the owners are, the house is even more impressive. The house is a museum unto its own and should be listed as a place to see in Black Mountain. It is just a really cool eclectic place that you could visit a hundred times and still see something new. Don't be intimidated by the master shower, it is an experience that should be embraced. The kitchen is well stocked and had everything we needed. The back deck is comfortable. we didn't use the grill or the hot tub. The beds in the master and guest room 1 were very comfy. You can't walk to the downtown area from the house, but the drive is very short. If you have an appreciation for something different, you will love this place.

A beautiful home in a pretty mountain town

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying in this home in which was like a small museum with interesting artwork. It was very comfortable and we took advantage of the hot tub and being so close to town and able to walk to the lake. Parking is easy to find in downtown Black Mountain and there are lots of shops and restaurants. The property was very dog friendly. Champagne and bakery goods were a wonderful touch. We will certainly return when we visit the area again. Patrice is a wonderful host.
