About Joe Bartenfeld

Sam and I live in Atlanta and have the house next door to the rental. We both were employed by Delta Airlines. Me as a Captain and she is still working as a Flight Attendant. She is a graduate of the University of Alabama and I graduated from Emory University in Atlanta. We have one daughter and one granddaughter who live in Gainesville, Ga. Sam and I both love meeting and socializing with our guest.

Joe Bartenfeld purchased this house in 2009

Why Joe Bartenfeld chose Smoky Mountains

NEW WINTER AND SPRING PRICING! We love the serenity and beauty of this location. We take great pride in its cleaniness. WE DO NOT ACCEPT ANY PETS! I t is tastfully decorated.

We back up to the National Forest and enjoy hiking down the trail which connects to the Bartram trail at the base of Scaly Mountain. It is a wonderful place to sit back and relax.

What makes this house unique

We are at the end of the road, it is quiet. It has a camping area for children. It has an outdoor fire-pit. Swing set for Children. The cabin is totally supplied and we are centrally located to Clayton, Ga. and Franklin N.C. and Highlands is just 9 miles away. We DO NOT ACCEPT PETS! We will take infants but prefer children over four years of age.

The spring brings the flowering shrubs and plants. The fall bring the beautiful foliage change and the mountains are painted in breathtaking aray of colors. The winters open the canopy for wonderful distant views.

Fabulous home away from home

  • 5 of 5

This is our second year renting our cabin from Joe and Sam. Top notch. Very clean and well stocked. They are such wonderful people. Joe even brought over some home grown tomatoes for us to enjoy. The cabin is on top of the mountain. Very quiet and secluded. Only thing you'll hear is mother nature and an occasional dog or 2. You are close to shopping, hiking, tubing, waterfalls, you name it's in this area. We will definitely be renting the cabin again next year. I don't think we will ever tire of this area.

Lovely Mountain Home!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the mountains at this house! It is in a good location, very tranquil and private, but also in close proximity to Highlands, Franklin, and Dillard for restaurants, shops, etc. We also really enjoyed the nearby hiking trails and many waterfalls in this area! The house itself was very cozy and clean, and the kitchen is well-equipped for preparing your own meals if you choose to do so. The gas grill and wood for the fire pit made for a fun evening of cooking out and enjoying a bonfire in the cool mountain evening! We felt very comfortable and relaxed here, and would have stayed longer if we could! Thanks for all your help Joe, we're sorry our Swiss friends missed out on such a lovely place!

***** Absolute Perfection!*****

  • 5 of 5

Words cannot even begin to express how perfect our stay at The Birdhouse was. From start to finish the entire experience was pure heaven. The cottage itself was stunning. Beautifully decorated with care and thought for the people that may stay there. EVERYTHING you need is in the cottage--and I do mean everything. The only thing you need to bring is yourself. Step outside at night and you feel like you can reach out and touch the stars. Joe is the perfect vacation landlord offering advice on restaurants, shopping, sights and hiking trails. He is always just a phone call away if needed but also gives you your privacy to relax and enjoy his property. Mountain Fresh Deli in the Highlands is a great place for takeout and easy grocery shopping. Bella's Junction Cafe in Scaly Mtn is a must for dinner! There should be an exclusive category on VRBO that is reserved for Elite 5 Star vacation properties--Joe Bartenfield's Birdhouse would be at the very top of that category. Can't wait to go back next year!

A hidden gem in the mountains

  • 5 of 5

This was one of the best trips our family has ever had in the mountains! Thanks to Joe and Sam for sharing their little slice of heaven with us. The 1st class service, top notch accommodations and helpful hints that Joe gave us made our trip outstanding! The house is remotely located in the mountains and very peaceful. At night is felt as though you could reach up and grab the stars. The kids had a blasts exploring around the property during the day and playing games by the warm fireplace at night. We could not have asked for anything more! Great food, waterfalls, scenic views, and horseback riding were all only a short drive away. If you want to vacation in the mountains and do it the right way, this is your solution. This is the only place we will stay from now on when we visit this part of the mountains. I could go on and on, but words could never truly describe how wonderful this cabin and it's owners really are.

we enjoyed ourselves for a month at the cabin

  • 5 of 5

this is a great place for adventure and relaxation in the highlands area. some of the hikes we completed: scaly mountain, jones knob, pickens nose, rabun bald and whiteside mountain. a couple of them we did twice. all within a short drive from the cabin. this place is over 4000 ft. in elevation which is rare for north carolina and gives you beautiful foliage and trees. the mountain fresh grocery has a great deli and coffee shop along with good meat and beer and wine. there is an ABC package store if you want something stronger. as previously stated: the cabin is fully equipped with anything and everything you might need. the place is totally quiet with beautiful scenery right out the front door.

Love love this cabin and the owners

  • 5 of 5

My family and I just had a wonderful, relaxing vacation at Joe and Sam's cabin. We were able to do hiking, view waterfalls, and did some snow play. Snow tubing was just 2.5 miles away!! Joe supplied everything including firewood for the fire. The cabin was beautifully furnished and we felt right at home. We've already booked another trip for the summer so we can do some more hiking, zip lining (about 4-5 miles away), and lots of reading by the fireplace.
