About Kendall Allen

My wife, Carol, and I are native Floridians. Carol retired in 2006 as an office manager for an interior design company in central Florida. My business is real estate and I'm still active as a broker and commercial property owner.

Avocations include golf, fishing, woodworking and traveling. The mountains of NC have been our summer home since 2006. It is always nice to get out of the summer heat in Florida and enjoy the cooler temps in the mountains.

Our usual plans have changed so we have decided to share our mountain home with others looking for a memorable vacation.

Kendall Allen purchased this house in 2006

Why Kendall Allen chose Smoky Mountains

We have vacationed in the Franklin, NC area for over thirty years. When Carol retired in 2006, we decided to look for a second home in the mountains. After looking at over two dozen homes for a week, we stumbled into Deer Ridge to look at an open house. When we walked in the front door and saw the view from the great room and the deck, we knew it was meant to be ours. Custom built, great views, wood floors, spacious kitchen, a large master suite, all on an acre of wooded land. When searching for a name for the house, 'Serendipity' fit perfectly. It was indeed an unexpected, fortunate finding of great joy!

What makes this house unique

Enjoying the amenities at 'Serendipity' is great, but it is close to all of the exciting venues, sights and experiences afforded by a mountain visit. Excellent restaurants are available in Franklin to the north or in Dillard and Clayton, Ga to the south. It is less than a 30 minute drive to Highlands, NC with all of its shops, restaurants and golf courses. Visit Dry Falls and Bridal Veil Falls along the way.

If you are a model airplane enthuiast, a local model airplane club has a ten acre airfield just below the house. Watch planes from the deck or drive down to the airfield and get up close and personal. Guests are welcome.

Franklin is now the home to the new Smoky Mountain Performing Arts Center. Enjoy name entertainers like the Oak Ridge Boys, Kenny Rogers, Lee Greenwood, Gatlin Brothers as well as regional and local talent. Prices are reasonable too!

Golfers will find numerous challenging courses in north GA as well as in western NC, all less than an hour away. Mill Creek Country Club in Franklin offers a true mountain golf experience as well.

One of the highlights of any trip to the mountains is a trip along the Blue Ridge Parkway. With elevations over 5000 ft, there are inumerable incredible views. Dine on a mountain top at the famous Pisgah Inn or pack a lunch and picnic at one of the many picnic areas along the way. Access to the Parkway is available south of Waynesville about 45 miles north.

Franklin is known for it's gem mining opportunities. Rafting trips for all skill levels on any of several rivers is available within an hour's drive. In the winter, skiing and other winter activities can be found @ Maggie Valley, also about an hour away.

The mountains are a hiker's delight. One can enjoy the historical Appalachian or Bertram Trails or the famous Whiteside Mountain trail between Highlands and Cashiers. Many, many other trails for all skill levels are close by. The rewards of climbing to a mountain top are indescribable.

Lovely home with beautiful views

  • 5 of 5

This house is tastefully decorated- no detail is overlooked in guest comfort and enjoyment. Close to main roadway, but not that close that you can't feel you've "escaped it all." Ken, the owner, is spectacular, generous with advice and assistance should you require it. We look forward to renting again soon!

Peaceful Mountain View

  • 4 of 5

This home was very comfortable, clean, and located in a quiet and relaxing area of town. We enjoyed the large living area and the expansive porch with an incredible view. The sunsets and sunrises were spectacular. The home accommodated our two small families with restful bedroom retreats on either side of the living area. The master bedroom was lovely and spacious. The guest bedroom and bonus room gave us plenty of space to find a quiet retreat when needed. I would stay at Serendipity again.

Great home, great owners and a great experience.

  • 5 of 5

The Allens pay attention to all the details that matter when one rents a home. The home was roomy, clean, pest free, stocked with supplies and very comfortable. You really feel "at home."

The community gated community is full of wildlife and friendly neighbors. If you are a birdwatcher, there were no less than 25 different species of birds we saw during our stay. The Allens provide bird feeders for you to keep stocked. Between the squirrels and the birds, they provided a lot of entertainment as they came and went.

During the fall foliage, we saw incredible beauty as the leaves changed and the nights got cooler. We hiked and fished from Brevard (French Broad) to Sylva (Tuck) to the Highlands (Callasaga). There are many restaurants within a half hour that are 3 star and better. Two in Franklin, one in Clayton and 4 in Highlands. And, if you really want to stretch, make the trip to Cashiers to the Canyon Kitchen. In the past we have mined for gemstones at the Mason's Ruby and Sapphire Mine. A great experience and true prospecting. Not like the other mines where the ground is "salted"--where they put the gemstones in the dirt for you. What's the fun in that????

You cannot go wrong in renting this property. It is a comfortable get-away and a true gem in the Franklin/Otto area.

Our stay in Otto NC

  • 5 of 5

We loved Serendipity! It has large bathrooms and a modern kitchen. The view from the back porch was to very nice. My son and I sat on the back porch late into the night, just looking at the stars. When we go on vacation we love to stay near Franklin, it is our home base to play in North Georgia and cross over the mountains into Tennessee. Ken was easy to deal with and we hope to stay at Serendipity again.

Another fantastic stay!

  • 5 of 5

This is the second year in a row we stayed here at Serendipity and it was fantastic! Even though the weather did not cooperate with us we really enjoyed sitting on the porch watching the hummingbirds and enjoying the mountain views. House is extremely comfortable and the kitchen was big enough for the 4 of us to be in it while we were cooking and cleaning. Kendall is extremely responsive and we hope to return again next year!

Thanks Kendall!
