About Kendall Allen

My wife, Carol, and I are native Floridians. Carol retired in 2006 as an office manager for an interior design company in central Florida. My business is real estate and I'm still active as a broker and commercial property owner.

Avocations include golf, fishing, woodworking and traveling. The mountains of NC have been our summer home since 2006. It is always nice to get out of the summer heat in Florida and enjoy the cooler temps in the mountains.

Our usual plans have changed so we have decided to share our mountain home with others looking for a memorable vacation.

Kendall Allen purchased this house in 2006

Why Kendall Allen chose Otto

We have vacationed in the Franklin, NC area for over thirty years. When Carol retired in 2006, we decided to look for a second home in the mountains. After looking at over two dozen homes for a week, we stumbled into Deer Ridge to look at an open house. When we walked in the front door and saw the view from the great room and the deck, we knew it was meant to be ours. Custom built, great views, wood floors, spacious kitchen, a large master suite, all on an acre of wooded land. When searching for a name for the house, 'Serendipity' fit perfectly. It was indeed an unexpected, fortunate finding of great joy!

What makes this house unique

Enjoying the amenities at 'Serendipity' is great, but it is close to all of the exciting venues, sights and experiences afforded by a mountain visit. Excellent restaurants are available in Franklin to the north or in Dillard and Clayton, Ga to the south. It is less than a 30 minute drive to Highlands, NC with all of its shops, restaurants and golf courses. Visit Dry Falls and Bridal Veil Falls along the way.

If you are a model airplane enthuiast, a local model airplane club has a ten acre airfield just below the house. Watch planes from the deck or drive down to the airfield and get up close and personal. Guests are welcome.

Franklin is now the home to the new Smoky Mountain Performing Arts Center. Enjoy name entertainers like the Oak Ridge Boys, Kenny Rogers, Lee Greenwood, Gatlin Brothers as well as regional and local talent. Prices are reasonable too!

Golfers will find numerous challenging courses in north GA as well as in western NC, all less than an hour away. Mill Creek Country Club in Franklin offers a true mountain golf experience as well.

One of the highlights of any trip to the mountains is a trip along the Blue Ridge Parkway. With elevations over 5000 ft, there are inumerable incredible views. Dine on a mountain top at the famous Pisgah Inn or pack a lunch and picnic at one of the many picnic areas along the way. Access to the Parkway is available south of Waynesville about 45 miles north.

Franklin is known for it's gem mining opportunities. Rafting trips for all skill levels on any of several rivers is available within an hour's drive. In the winter, skiing and other winter activities can be found @ Maggie Valley, also about an hour away.

The mountains are a hiker's delight. One can enjoy the historical Appalachian or Bertram Trails or the famous Whiteside Mountain trail between Highlands and Cashiers. Many, many other trails for all skill levels are close by. The rewards of climbing to a mountain top are indescribable.

Wonderful Mountain Retreat for all!!Just Perfect!!

  • 5 of 5

We loved Serendipity!!It was wonderful working with Ken to secure our booking and answer my many questions. We loved the home and wished it was ours!!The view from the huge porch was terrific and since it was up so high it felt as though we were in a tree house- at least that is our grandson's thought! I loved sitting in one of the many rocking chairs on the porch and watching the birds and relaxing. The kitchen was fully stocked and so very useful , no detail is left out by Ken ! The soaking/jet tub was great! We loved the layout of the house with the master at one end and the other 2 bedrooms on the other side,so great for the grandchildren. And the open concept living/dining and kitchen was great as I prepared meals and could watch the family play. At night we would go out on the porch and it felt as though you could touch the stars! We would take walks each evening in the neighborhood and it was so very peaceful, hardly saw another person . Our daughter even put up her hammock in the trees surrounding the home. The town of Franklin is nearby, about 12 min ,and has everything you would need. Grocery stores, cute shops, looked like nice eateries, a huge playground,a neat tea shop- Loose Leaf Asylum, also a nice church at Holly Springs, and not that far from Dry Falls which was perfect with the young grandchildren! We even found an "off the beaten path" pottery shop - less than 2 miles away- Four Winds Pottery ( 66 Shadow Drive ,Otto)awesome pottery pieces made right there by Marie . We had never stayed in the Smokey's before ,but Serendipity made me love them.We kept the curtains on the slider opened all night and could awaken to the different views/ color as the sun rose over the mountain. It was beautiful! We hope to come back again one day. We have stayed at many VRBOs, this IS OUR FAVORITE One!! Thank you, Ken!!!

Loved Serendipity!

We had a great time staying in this lovely home. Ken and his wife go out of their way to make sure their guests feel like they are home and if you have any questions they are quick and courteous to answer. The house has easy access from the main rd of 441. The house has an awesome back porch with rocking chairs and a swing the view is amazing! The master bedroom has sliding doors that step out onto the deck so you can enjoy the mountain from the privacy of your room. They even went through the trouble of topping some trees to make sure you would have a clear view of the mountains there is a lot of places that don't do that. The house is nicely decorated and clean with comfortable beds nice linens and the design is great with a split bedroom plan that insures privacy if you are traveling with friends. The house is well stocked with everything you would need to enjoy your visit. We will definitely stay here again.

The Serndipity house was incredible. Everything that we needed for our stay was available to us. The view from the porch was spectacular. We spent most of our time on the porch enjoying the magnificent sunsets and the beautiful smokey mountain fog in the morning. My parents are 80 so comfort was my main concern. Everyone slept very well and it was just so relaxing for everyone. The cabin was 2 miles away from the wedding venue so that was an added convenience for us all. I would recommend this lovely cabin in the woods to anyone visiting the great smokey mountains. A very special thank you to the owners for sharing this gorgeous property!
