About Billy Want

I am a retired law professor at the Charleston School of Law where I taught constitutional law and land use. Previously I was an environmental lawyer. My wife is an archivist working for the College of Charleston. We have a son who is a junior at Duke. We live most of the year in downtown Charleston and part of the year at this rental house on Sullivan's Island.

Billy Want purchased this house in 1988

Why Billy Want chose Sullivan's Island

We lived at this property we are now renting for 15 years before we began renting it part of the year. We therefore consider it our home rather than a rental property and have furnished it nicely and maintain it in top condition. The house has large picture windows and French and sliding doors leading to the two decks and front porch to take advantage of the fabulous views. The owner is an avid landscape gardener and in the spring and summer, the large back yard comes alive with native plant growth that screens neighboring properties.

What makes this house unique

Sullivan's Island is approximately 4 miles long, and is great for biking. With a tiny town center filled with interesting restaurants and a few shops and galleries, it is ideal for a quiet beach vacation. The house is located on what is locally called 'dolphin point', as they are often seen feeding in front of the house on the change of tide.

A wonderful spot!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had the best time renting this house in early Spring! We were able to watch spring come to life in the intercoastal marsh right from the house. The views are outstanding from all rooms. The kitchen in fully equipped as are the bathrooms. If you are looking for a relaxed, comfortable beachy home to rent this is the place for you. The fabulous Sullivan's Island beach is a very short walk from the house while the Fort Moultrie location is on the quiet end of the island. The local restaurants are terrific, the grocery stores are a very short drive to Mt Pleasant and Charleston is an easy drive from the Island. We plan to rent again soon! The owners could not be more pleasant and accommodating.

Perfect low-country home!

  • 5 of 5

We loved this house – it’s cozy, comfortable, and spacious, with great views of the intracoastal waterway and surrounding marsh from nearly every room. It was a perfect low-country experience! We were there in October and enjoyed hours on the large screen porch watching boats and paddlers go by – all capped off with countless variety of birds, and occasional dolphin sightings. With 2 large upstairs bedrooms, each with its own bathroom and private deck, we all had plenty of privacy. The house is located on the quiet end of the island with easy access for longs walks on a beautiful stretch of beach. While we often preferred to take advantage of the fresh local seafood and cook in the well-equipped kitchen, there are a variety of casual and fine dining restaurants about a mile away. House comes with many extras, including a piano, library of books, games, and a crab trap! It felt like home and we can’t wait to go back.

Wonderful, Charming Home

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed here for almost a month. The home has incredible views...the sunsets and sunrises are amazing. It is on the quiet end of the island, and still conveniently located with close access to awesome beaches, restaurants and Ft Moultrie is a short walk away. The owners are extremely accommodating and great to work with. The home is very comfortable, furnished with everything one would need. We loved the porches and the large table dining area. There are many windows in the home to expose the beautiful surroundings. Watching the boats ride by was one of our favorite things to do! My children enjoyed the spacious and well kept front and back yards. The rooms are all spacious as are the bathrooms, 2 equipped with tubs as well as showers (helpful with children). There is a nice laundry room equipped with a great washer and dryer. There was a fun ping ping table and bicycles available to use if you chose. The home has a comfortable "old charm" island vibe and we cannot wait to return! Thank you so much to the Wants!

Beautiful beach home

  • 5 of 5

For many years now, my family has been spending most of our summers on S.I. This past year we decided to upgrade to a home with a view. We met the owner, Billy, and saw his home on the Intracoastal Waterway the previous summer and immediately fell in love with it. The home feels just like that, a home! The first thing we noticed was the VIEW-150 degrees of the most spectacular scenery. While staying there we witnessed an ever changing tidal vista of sunrises and wildlife. We especially enjoyed watching the many species of birds in their habitat-including Ospreys! Across the way you can see the historic Pitt Street Bridge as well as the Ben Sawyer draw bridge. All of this is awash in the most amazing sunlit colors of the day. You can enjoy this view from large picture windows in the rooms and a lovely front porch, or even while showering in either of the upstairs bathrooms, The home itself is large, airy, and is beautifully maintained with an extensive library, lovely pine floors, and a kitchen that is large and extremely well equipped. Billy and his wife have thought of other amenities such as towels and bedding, but we especially loved having access to the bikes for touring the island and getting to the beach (just a short distance).
