Overview

About the property

Studio, 1 Bathroom, Butler's pantry, Sleeps 4

Our studio condo has a large living/sleeping area, a Butler's Pantry (Note: no microwave/toaster oven/hot plate per newly enforced county ordinance--applicable resort wide) bathroom with granite counter top and slate flooring, tub/shower combo, and wood storage cabinets below the sink. It has beautiful mountain views from the private lanai. Very conveniently located within the resort...close to the beach path, both pools and the tennis courts! Pool cabana with grills and full kitchen by the pool, just below the lanai. A cabana with coin-operated laundry facilities and a large ice machine are just across the sidewalk from the front door.

Amenities include:

* air conditioning

* coffee maker

* pots/pans/dishes/utensils for cooking down at the cabana

The location is very, very convenient within the resort (in the Hala building). It is right by the tennis counts and the beach path. It is also right between the two pools and close to each. The round pool below the lanai has a cabana with propane BBQ grills, tables and a kitchen available for your use. It is really nice to grill while the kids swim, with a quick walk back to the condo when you are done. Just beyond the condo's front walkway is a green lawn by the tennis courts which is a great place to have a picnic and watch the sun set. Also close to the front walkway is a place to rinse off after the beach, a large ice machine (great for coolers) and coin-operated laundry facilities.

About Rachel Penn

We are five close friends (Scott, Rachel, Sean, Lisa & Darcy) who all live in the San Francisco Bay Area. We all LOVE Kauai, and we fell in love with the Hanalei Bay Resort in particular. So when a condo came up for sale, we took the chance, and bought into paradise. There you have it...we hope you will consider sharing our new home away from home with us. Rachel and Lisa will help you with all of your booking needs. Mahalo!

Rachel Penn purchased this studio in 2014

Why Rachel Penn chose Princeville

Oh my...why indeed. The most beautiful resort in the most beautiful town, on the most beautiful island (in our humble opinion) in Hawaii...that's why.

What makes this studio unique

The well landscaped pool and grounds at this resort are spectacular. The short walk (or chauffeured golf cart ride) to a beautiful beach, tennis and golf in close proximity, and the breathtaking sunsets from the fire pit area conspire to make this a truly memorable place to stay.

Guestbook comments from the owner

My name is Lisa, and I am one of the new co-owners. My husband and I recently stayed in the #5208 studio for nine nights. This was our first stay in this unit. Another couple was renting the other one bedroom side.

My first impression was that the room is a nice size and I liked the layout. I found that the four large drawers in the dresser were more than adequate accommodations for our clothing. The hooks outside the bathroom were a nice place to hang worn clothing that didn’t need to be laundered yet. We used the shower doors for hanging our wet swim suits. I stored our suitcases, one inside the other, beside the couch next to the sliding glass door. They were out of the way, and added another surface on which to rest a drink.

The bathroom itself is really roomy and nicely done with lots of storage, and cute tiles. There were plenty of towels and wash cloths, and some basic supplies (rubbing alcohol, peroxide) in the medicine chest. The water pressure could be better, but it wasn’t a huge issue.

My husband and I both enjoy cooking and we cooked all but one of our breakfasts and most of our dinners in the studio. The kitchenette, while small, had everything we needed. We felt there was plenty of room to store our groceries on the shelves with the dishes, and in the fridge. There were some staples like salt and pepper, and plastic wrap. We grilled our dinner in the outdoor cabana and used the toaster oven and hot plate for making side dishes. It was nice sitting out on the private lanai to eat our dinner.

Hanalei Bay Resort uses golf carts to get people, their groceries, and luggage to and from condos. Some of the carts are gas powered and a little noisy, but it is so nice not to have to make several trips to and from the car when checking in and out. The cart paths run throughout the resort and are especially convenient for a pick up at the beach after a long day in the sun and swimming in the ocean.

We were concerned about hearing noise from the one bedroom condo next door, but the only time we heard the couple staying there was when they first arrived with all of their luggage and groceries. One of the things I think both sides learn quickly is not to talk too loudly in the “hall zone”—where the lock off doors are, as sound can carry, and we both wanted our privacy. I have experienced this in the other condos I have stayed in at HBR, as well at the Marriott, so the same rules of consideration apply.

I hope this helps!

Great Value with a Few Tradeoffs

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I stayed in this unit for 9 nights in July 2018.

The Pros:

- The amount of space was perfect for two people

- The property is beautiful and the resort amenities are top-notch, including access to two great pools and a very nice beach

- The "bulter's pantry" allowed us to make breakfasts and lunches in-unit, rather than eating out every meal

The Con's:

- As others have mentioned, cleanliness/maintenance is an issue. Every dish in the kitchen needed to be washed before use (one glass had lipstick on it when we arrived...), the cubbies in the bathroom had a visible layer of dust, the sheer curtains to the lanai had numerous stains, as did the sheets (although those more subtle). The broken louvre mentioned in a May 2018 review was still broken, the TV remote only occasionally worked, the table on the lanai had a pamphlet wedged under one leg so it wouldn't wobble, and the phone was disconnected.

- The unit is placed on a main thoroughfare through the resort so in addition to early morning roosters, there were often kids running/yelling outside in the morning and an almost constant stream of noisy golf carts going by starting very early. Because of all the noise, we weren't able to keep the doors to the lanai open very much, and especially not at night.

All in all, if we were to stay in Princeville again, we would definitely consider revisiting this resort but may look for a different unit. If we were to stay in this unit again, we would come prepared with our own cleaning supplies and some heavy duty ear plugs.

Has everything what is needed for a couple of relaxing days on Kauai

  • 3 of 5

The small Studio which better serves 2 as 3 Person comes along with boogy boards and beachchairs. Cooking need to happen outside at small pool. Unfortunately 3 out of 3 barbeques were not working at the last day. A good loacation if you want to explore the North Shore. You Need to Keep in mind that it Comes along with additional Resort fees.

Wonderful Resort and Location in Kauai

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at the Hanalei Bay Resort for 3 nights. We loved staying in Princeville and the studio was perfect for us. The room had everything we needed and was close to the pool and parking. The owner made sure we had everything ahead of time and left notes on what to do in the area (used some of the restaurant recommendations!). The resort is very welcoming as well. We would definitely stay here again! Thank you for helping to make our stay so wonderful.

Underwhelming

  • 2 of 5

From the first sight of the broken louvres on the front door we knew this unit was not well maintained. The cleaning was subpar at the best. We advised the front desk of the sand and black hairs all throughout the tiled areas and the stained bath towels. They told us to contact the owners directly, unfortunately without a working phone or internet in the unit this was not possible. We cleaned the unit the best we could and flopped into bed to get our next nasty surprise. The linens were the worst I have ever slept on (this includes camping trips and hostel stays). The valance was filthy, there were more black hairs in the bed and the sheets themselves were pilled and scratchy. We resorted to buying new sheets to use for our stay as there is no way we felt comfortable laying on the others. We were prepared for small, dark and dingy but we were not prepared for terrible linens and uncleanliness. Apart from the lack of cleaning, broken louvres and broken unusable bath the place was as advertised. It was in a great location within the resort and with easy access to pools and cooking facilities. We had no problems with taking our food and goods to the bbq and it was a lovely quiet spot to eat. Hotel staff were lovely. All in all I would not recommend this unit to anyone nor would I stay here again. However I would stay at the resort again just not this apartment.

Property was lovely, great pool, great beaches nearby

  • 4 of 5

Everything was pretty awesome. Loved the pool, great beaches nearby. The only issue was noise from the chickens, birds, and yelling neighbors waking us up in the morning. Not sure what can be done about that. Other than that we really enjoyed our stay. Appreciated the beach chairs and toys.

Beautiful!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time staying at Hanalei Bay! The resort has great amenities and access to an awesome beach. We had been camping earlier in the week so the fact that the resort had a laundry facility was perfect. One item to note is that there isn't breakfast available at the resort, but there is free coffee by reception!
