About Rachel Penn

We are five close friends (Scott, Rachel, Sean, Lisa & Darcy) who all live in the San Francisco Bay Area. We all LOVE Kauai, and we fell in love with the Hanalei Bay Resort in particular. So when a condo came up for sale, we took the chance, and bought into paradise. There you have it...we hope you will consider sharing our new home away from home with us. Rachel and Lisa will help you with all of your booking needs. Mahalo!

Why Rachel Penn chose North Shore

Oh my...why indeed. The most beautiful resort in the most beautiful town, on the most beautiful island (in our humble opinion) in Hawaii...that's why.

What makes this studio unique

The well landscaped pool and grounds at this resort are spectacular. The short walk (or chauffeured golf cart ride) to a beautiful beach, tennis and golf in close proximity, and the breathtaking sunsets from the fire pit area conspire to make this a truly memorable place to stay.

Guestbook comments from the owner

My name is Lisa, and I am one of the new co-owners. My husband and I recently stayed in the #5208 studio for nine nights. This was our first stay in this unit. Another couple was renting the other one bedroom side.

My first impression was that the room is a nice size and I liked the layout. I found that the four large drawers in the dresser were more than adequate accommodations for our clothing. The hooks outside the bathroom were a nice place to hang worn clothing that didn’t need to be laundered yet. We used the shower doors for hanging our wet swim suits. I stored our suitcases, one inside the other, beside the couch next to the sliding glass door. They were out of the way, and added another surface on which to rest a drink.

The bathroom itself is really roomy and nicely done with lots of storage, and cute tiles. There were plenty of towels and wash cloths, and some basic supplies (rubbing alcohol, peroxide) in the medicine chest. The water pressure could be better, but it wasn’t a huge issue.

My husband and I both enjoy cooking and we cooked all but one of our breakfasts and most of our dinners in the studio. The kitchenette, while small, had everything we needed. We felt there was plenty of room to store our groceries on the shelves with the dishes, and in the fridge. There were some staples like salt and pepper, and plastic wrap. We grilled our dinner in the outdoor cabana and used the toaster oven and hot plate for making side dishes. It was nice sitting out on the private lanai to eat our dinner.

Hanalei Bay Resort uses golf carts to get people, their groceries, and luggage to and from condos. Some of the carts are gas powered and a little noisy, but it is so nice not to have to make several trips to and from the car when checking in and out. The cart paths run throughout the resort and are especially convenient for a pick up at the beach after a long day in the sun and swimming in the ocean.

We were concerned about hearing noise from the one bedroom condo next door, but the only time we heard the couple staying there was when they first arrived with all of their luggage and groceries. One of the things I think both sides learn quickly is not to talk too loudly in the “hall zone”—where the lock off doors are, as sound can carry, and we both wanted our privacy. I have experienced this in the other condos I have stayed in at HBR, as well at the Marriott, so the same rules of consideration apply.

I hope this helps!

This place was a perfect location and beautiful

It was just what we needed for our stay. The resort is friendly and helpful. We would stay here again, no doubt. A helpful hint would be that there are fun beach toys under the bed! Thank you so much for being apart of our first Hawaii vacation.

Nice Hanalei Bay condo in a terrific location.

  • 5 of 5

Overall we enjoyed our stay in Rachel's condo.

Beginning with the positives, the room was clean and comfortable (terrific a/c). The views from the patio are great and the grounds of Hanalei Bay are beautifully maintained. Communication with Rachel was very good both before and during our stay making the planning process much easier. We really enjoyed the laid back atmosphere at the resort and its proximity to the Kalalau trail. Additionally the hot plate allowed us to cook at the condo saving us both time and money.

That said, we do feel the condo fell short in a few areas. First, it is listed as an "updated" studio which seems rather misleading. While it certainly met all of our needs, aesthetically it feels quite dated. Additionally, the listing says that resort wide wifi is included with the daily resort fee guests are charged. While technically wifi is provided, it is painfully slow and essentially useless. Guests who think they may need it should operate under the assumption there is effectively no wifi in the condo (several other nearby condos have set up their own WiFi networks presumably for this very reason). Also the oven listed in the amenities is just a toaster oven, not a full sized one.

Again, we did enjoy our stay and thought this listing was a solid value, but believe other travelers would benefit from the clarification we provided on several points.

Beautiful resort setting

  • 4 of 5

We have been to Kauai many times but never stayed in the north. We loved the rain, the beach on the bay, the pool, and the views of the waterfalls and mountains from the lanai.

Lovely property , Unit could use a few things

  • 5 of 5

The resort itself is a great place to stay. Very Convenient to Princeville and Hanalei. The pool is wonderful,as is the tennis. The climb down to the beach is very steep. They do have golf carts to take you back and forth. USE THEM !!!!! The beach was nice, calm and good snorkeling. Our room was a bit shabby. The bathroom shower could use new doors and a new shower head.Really no cooking facilities. The resort has nowhere to eat for breakfast or lunch. We were able to have breakfast (muffins, bagels, toast) in our place, but not much else. I made coffee only to find out there were no coffee mugs!!!! It would also have been nice to have a ice bucket!! There are beach chairs and some other equipment. I would go back to Hanalei Bay Resort just next time get a larger place.

Owner's Response: Aloha, We agree, the resort and the beach below are spectacular, and convenient, especially when you use the golf carts. We are sorry that some of the kitchen equipment was missing from the unit. We work hard to make sure the kitchenette is fully stocked. Sometimes when people rent both sides, dishes (like the mugs) migrate to the other side and don’t get put back before the next guests arrive. We are putting an inventory check-list in place for the cleaning people to resolve this problem. I am glad housekeeping was able to deliver some mugs to you. The housekeeping and maintenance people at Hanalei Bay Resort are very friendly and responsive. Mahalo!

HBR great place to stay

  • 4 of 5

We had a great time at the HB Resort. The pools, pool bar, location, views and access to the beach are amazing. The kitchenette was very helpful, and the bed was very comfortable. The shower door and front door panel was in need of some attention, and we wish we had been informed that the air conditioner was broken prior to our stay. The owner was aware of the issue, as verified by the resort, but they had not informed us prior to our stay. Luckily the fan worked well, but still a bit annoying to not have been informed.

Wonderful stay. Everyone was pleasant and so helpful. Very clean. Condo had several problems - sliding screen door wheels broken, bathroom light went out, air conditioner did not work properly- but maintenance fixed them. Owner has contacted air conditioner people. We would recommend the property to our friends.
