About Rachel Penn

We are five close friends (Scott, Rachel, Sean, Lisa & Darcy) who all live in the San Francisco Bay Area. We all LOVE Kauai, and we fell in love with the Hanalei Bay Resort in particular. So when a condo came up for sale, we took the chance, and bought into paradise. There you have it...we hope you will consider sharing our new home away from home with us. Rachel and Lisa will help you with all of your booking needs. Mahalo!

Why Rachel Penn chose North Shore

Oh my...why indeed. The most beautiful resort in the most beautiful town, on the most beautiful island (in our humble opinion) in Hawaii...that's why.

What makes this studio unique

The well landscaped pool and grounds at this resort are spectacular. The short walk (or chauffeured golf cart ride) to a beautiful beach, tennis and golf in close proximity, and the breathtaking sunsets from the fire pit area conspire to make this a truly memorable place to stay.

Guestbook comments from the owner

My name is Lisa, and I am one of the new co-owners. My husband and I recently stayed in the #5208 studio for nine nights. This was our first stay in this unit. Another couple was renting the other one bedroom side.

My first impression was that the room is a nice size and I liked the layout. I found that the four large drawers in the dresser were more than adequate accommodations for our clothing. The hooks outside the bathroom were a nice place to hang worn clothing that didn’t need to be laundered yet. We used the shower doors for hanging our wet swim suits. I stored our suitcases, one inside the other, beside the couch next to the sliding glass door. They were out of the way, and added another surface on which to rest a drink.

The bathroom itself is really roomy and nicely done with lots of storage, and cute tiles. There were plenty of towels and wash cloths, and some basic supplies (rubbing alcohol, peroxide) in the medicine chest. The water pressure could be better, but it wasn’t a huge issue.

My husband and I both enjoy cooking and we cooked all but one of our breakfasts and most of our dinners in the studio. The kitchenette, while small, had everything we needed. We felt there was plenty of room to store our groceries on the shelves with the dishes, and in the fridge. There were some staples like salt and pepper, and plastic wrap. We grilled our dinner in the outdoor cabana and used the toaster oven and hot plate for making side dishes. It was nice sitting out on the private lanai to eat our dinner.

Hanalei Bay Resort uses golf carts to get people, their groceries, and luggage to and from condos. Some of the carts are gas powered and a little noisy, but it is so nice not to have to make several trips to and from the car when checking in and out. The cart paths run throughout the resort and are especially convenient for a pick up at the beach after a long day in the sun and swimming in the ocean.

We were concerned about hearing noise from the one bedroom condo next door, but the only time we heard the couple staying there was when they first arrived with all of their luggage and groceries. One of the things I think both sides learn quickly is not to talk too loudly in the “hall zone”—where the lock off doors are, as sound can carry, and we both wanted our privacy. I have experienced this in the other condos I have stayed in at HBR, as well at the Marriott, so the same rules of consideration apply.

I hope this helps!

Beautiful Condo

  • 4 of 5

Hanalei Bay Resort is fantastically beautiful. We loved both pools and the landscaping is beyond awesome. The condo was perfect for our needs. The bed was very comfy. I would have given my review 5 stars but we needed to ask for batteries for the AC remote and then for the TV remote. Also, the 2 times when we really wanted to use the shuttle service we got a constant busy signal. That was disappointing.

Cute unit in wonderful resort

  • 3 of 5

3.5 stats

The resort is just beyond beautiful with lush gardens and an amazing pool. The unit was cute, but did not feel "newly remodeled". The bed felt old, but the worst was the tub/shower. It was soooo old and worn, and so dirty it grossed me out completely. Plenty of black fungus/mold and seemed so not have had a thourogh cleaning in years. We would love to rent this unit again, but the bathroom made me second guess this.

On the positive side the unit has a well equipped kitchenette which was handy. Most of the dishes were dirty which is disgusting and I had to wash them before using. The somewhat larger kitchenette takes up space, so there is not much place to hang clothes.

The unit is also decorated nicely with calm colors.

The Lanai is wonderful and I like the palm trees in front of it for privacy even though they Are blocking some of the view. The view is avaliable all over Kauai so would rather be able to have some privacy on the Lanai.

The best feature of this unit is the location. Close to both pools, laundry and ice, tennis courts, both grill huts, sunset viewing area and beach path.

Would we return? Probably because it's reasonably priced, but the bathroom situasjon needs to be dealt with sooner rather than later.

Owner's Response: Aloha! Thank you so much for your feedback. We completely agree about Hanalei Bay Resort’s gardens and pools, and the location of the condo is a positive we hear about over and over again. The unit was remodeled 5 years ago and a new pillow-top mattress was purchased at that time. Last summer the unit was completely repainted and in December we put in new carpet—perhaps updated would be a better description than remodeled. We even figured out a place to hang clothes—in front of the lock-off door when the entire unit isn’t being used. The tub in the bathroom is a standard tub, with no staining or chips or cracks. This unit has very frequent turn over, so the tub and bathroom get cleaned anywhere from every three days to every seven. The description of the tub seems so out of character for this unit, it made me wonder if maybe they put you in the wrong unit! If you would have contacted us, as well as housekeeping, we could have remedied the situation immediately. I am so glad you liked the kitchenette. We stayed on the studio side once for 9 days, and we cooked and ate almost every meal there. It was fun trying to figure out how to equip it to meet the needs of people who like to cook. I am so glad that you enjoyed our unit and the resort and would stay again. And, if you stay again, please don’t hesitate to contact us immediately if you see anything amiss. Mahalo!

Fair but wouldn't stay in this particular unit again

  • 2 of 5

6 night stay...Lovely view out to the mountain. Great access to beach and lovely pool. Very ordinary pizza/poor value at the restaurant .Very good service though.First night found the bed with linen which had crumbs under the duvet on the sheets, and sheets and pillows looked crumpled and unchanged. No dish towels provided until we requested them.Pillow cases didn't fit the king size pillows. We called for fresh linen. Bed very comfortable. Kitchen was inadequate. No kettle or toaster. Shower was in the bath. We would return to Hanalei Bay resort but not to this unit as not big enough or well equipped kitchen.

Owner's Response: Aloha! Thank you so much for your feedback. We strive to make our guest’s stay in our condo an amazing experience. We are sorry that the bed was not cleaned appropriately. If we had been notified about this problem, we could have had the cleaning supervisor check in with you and make sure everything else was cleaned to your standards. I am happy that the resort was able to respond to your request for fresh linens. We have invested in organic cotton sheets and the plus side of this is that the sheets are very soft and comfortable, but the downside is that they are prone to wrinkles. I am so happy you found the bed comfortable, which has been my experience when I have stayed in the #5208 side. We are sorry that you found the kitchenette inadequate. There is a toaster oven and a full-sized coffee pot that could be used in lieu of toaster and kettle. Perhaps next time you will consider staying in 5207, the one-bedroom side with a full-sized kitchen. We are so glad you enjoyed staying at Hanalei Bay Resort. We love it there too. Mahalo!
