This historic property, our Guest House, has been tastefully and comfortably restored. It was built over 100 years ago. It is located on its own cove with your own private island accessible at low tide. The sun porch that stretches the full width of the house offers an incredible view of the cove, only a few feet away. Houses cannot be built this close to the water any longer. Numerous wildlife has been observed from the sun porch, including a pair of Bald Eagles, Osprey, ducks, and Loons. The house has a fully equipped kitchen with eat-in-area. The living room has a Franklin Stove, allowing the creation of a cozy setting on those sometimes cool Maine evenings. The two bedrooms upstairs offer a nice retreat. This house is ideal for a couple or a small family. The setting is very private and very beautiful. The rock garden blooms summer long with a variety of flowers. The lawn allows one to easily beach a canoe or a kayak. We have just added a screened porch which adds a chance to observe the outdoors in comfort. Hiking trails maintained by the Vinalhaven Land Trust are a close walk away.Crockett's Cove offers boaters wonderful surprises, such as reversing falls, Whitmore Pond, and other small islands to explore or stop for lunch..It is an easy drive to town or to the landing for North Haven Island. This is the guest house for the main house (the Cottage). If our guest house does not work for you, take a look at the Cottage at VRBO 857705. We also charter a 20'-0" sailboat.
Our family has been vacationing on Vinalhaven for many years. We stay in the Cottage located a few hundred yards from our guest house. A meadow separates the two houses. They each have their own view of Crockett's Cove. The guest house is a fisherman's cottage that we restored, adding modern features but retaining the character of the house.
Regardless of its location, the cottage would be charming, but given its
stunning views, accessible water, and incredible bird life, it is a true gem. We
watched osprey defend their nest from a juvenile eagle who unwittingly flew
into their territory, mature eagles soaring above the inlet. The canoe is a
wonderful way to explore the cove (but be ready to be scolded by opsrey
yourself!) and the kitchen is well-equipped for preparing a lobster dinner. Our
four year old was thrilled with her pretty room and we all loved sitting at the
table gazing out at the water or reading books in the sitting area, or on the
highest rock of Two Bush Island. Scrambling to the top of Tip-Toe mountain,
a short walk along the road, remains one of our daughter's happiest
My husband and I stayed at the Crockett's Cove fisherman's cottage for two weeks. The setting is simply extraordinary, majestic, and pristine. The house sits just above a tidal flat, with the high-tide line only a couple of feet from the back of the house. With the tide going in and out each day, a staggering amount of wildlife parades past the cottage -- great blue herons fishing in the tidal flats, a family of osprey nesting adjacent to the house, the occasional seal, a raccoon with her cubs, squirrels around the house, rabbits, and sea-ducks of all sorts. Nature is close at hand there, and totally cinematic. It was hard for us to tear ourselves away from the property, there was so much to watch and pay attention to. There are many exquisite nature walks on Vinalhaven, and spectacular quarries for swimming, a wonderful farmers market twice a week, several good restaurants, incredibly friendly people -- too many things to experience in one trip.
Our hosts were warm, helpful, responsive and prompt. They provided thorough information on the logistical and cultural aspects of the island, the intricate process of bringing a car on the ferry, maps for the nature walks, and even a canoe for exploring Crockett's Cove. The house was clean, nicely maintained inside & out, and well appointed. But -- and this is the ONLY 'but' -- it is cluttered and over-furnished. In the grand scheme, this was a trifling matter. We would rent this cottage again without hesitation, and have already recommended it to friends.
Vinalhaven is one of our favorite places on earth. We loved spending our one week there this past summer at the Guest Cottage. It was incredibly private, and truly perfect for us. We cooked, swam, boated, boated more, made friends, watched the birds, picked early berries. We just loved it. A great jumping off point for island adventures.
This place could not be more perfect. Went up with my boyfriend at the end of August and we absolutely fell in love with the place. Definitely check out the hikes and walks nearby. Tip Toe Mountain is basically steps away. The cabin also had more spices and kitchen tools than we were expecting which was a lovely surprise as we cooked most meals and stayed in. The deck is an oasis. Really has everything you could want for a comfortable nature retreat. Hope to come back soon!
This little guest house was the ideal place for us to stay during our first-ever week on Vinalhaven. It had everything we needed, not least a beautiful setting that was brought home by the feeling that the house was perched right on the water during high tide. Lots of woods, paths, and rocky beaches to explore in the near vicinity kept our kids entertained, and made it easy to avoid getting in the car for several days of our stay. If we visit Vinalhaven again—and I hope we get the chance to do so—we'll be trying to nab this rental again.
Incredibly quiet, friendly, relaxed and welcoming. Staying right on the water was just beautiful - I enjoyed blueberry pancakes from the deck each morning watching the fog drift, the tide rise and the ospreys find food. Vinalhaven is a magical place filled with quiet walks, great dinners and refreshing swims. I cannot wait to come back!
What a great location - right on the water! Very nicely stocked with all those little essentials that you need - spices, flashlights, toilet paper, paper towels, cooking utensils, etc... We loved having the egrets close by, the canoe to use, and the water to splash into at the end of sweaty days of hiking and biking. Don't miss the sunset from Tip Top Mountain!
