The Big House

Superbly situation between a picturesque tidal pond and the Pamet River Marsh, and a few minutes walk to a marina and the ocean, this impeccably restored 1780 antique has every modern convenience but retains its authentic, historic Outer Cape character. Original wide plank floors and rustic wood ceilings combine with a stainless steel kitchen, central A/C, and the latest in entertainment technology to give the best of old and new. The house is also adjacent to marked bike route, and a few minutes drive to Ballston Beach.

There are two bedrooms on the second floor and a den/office on the ground floor that can be used for the occasional overnight guest. There is also as a powder room on the mail floor .

The master bedroom has a queen bed and dressing room. The second bedroom has twin beds. Both have an en suite bathrooms with walk-in showers .

The new, bright, and airy kitchen has a lofty ceiling, top-of-the-line appliances, and French doors opening to a trellised, private terrace. The large living room is furnished with remarkable mid-century modern pieces and contemporary furniture, with a screened porch to one side which is perfect for al fesco dining. The elegant dining room seats ten.

Rolling lawns and professional landscaping make the property a true mini-estate. Walk on your own right-of-way to the Pamet River and in high-tide launch a kayak or canoe! There’s even an outdoor shower.

This private and beautiful home, remodeled in 2014, has a two-bedroom guest cottage with a large sun porch on its grounds. The Studio, as it is known, can be rented with the main house or separately.

About Michael Allen

We live and work in Toronto, but have fallen in love with the Outer Cape. Having had a second home in rural Southern Ontario for many years, we knew we wanted a place that would have a country feel. The Ocean, the seafood, the temperate climate off-season and the people we met on the Outer Cape convinced us to look for a home in the area.

Why Michael Allen chose Truro

We searched for an historic house to rescue. In Truro we found the Big House, as it was called by its long-time owners who are a prominent Cape family, on a crisp autumn day in 2012. It had wonderful bones and the remnant of a garden. Having built and restored houses over 2 decades, we really wanted to revitalize this very special 18th century residence.

What makes this house unique

The Big House is a 1780 Full Salt Box. It backs onto a tidal marsh and fronts onto a tidal pond.

On a renovated second floor, there are 2 bedrooms. Each has a peaked ceiling and an ensuite bathroom. Doors and floors in the bedrooms are original to the house; walls have been plastered and the ceilings are white-painted cedar boards.

The main floor has original floors and period moldings with 2 decorative fireplaces. The beamed ceilings have been restored.

The kitchen, which is entirely new, is in a wing at the back of the house. It replaces the 19th century kitchen which was structurally unsound. Designed and built to respect the architecture of the rest of the Big House, the kitchen also has been fitted-out to suit even the most fussy cook.

Pamet Perfection

Truly one of the best rental homes we have experienced in Truro, and we have been coming out for almost twenty years! The location is perfection, on lovely Depot Road and so close to Pamet Harbor. We enjoyed morning and evening walks to see the boat activity and beautiful sunsets. Also great bike riding, options right from your front door whether you are a lightweight or a pro! Local National Seashore beaches that just take your breath away. Delicious meals close by from Wellfleet to Truro to P'town. Or stay right at home to relax in this beautiful, modern, well appointed, meticulously clean and landscaped gem of a home. And to top it off the most kind and accommodating landlords around...we will be back for sure!!

Perfect Getaway!

This was the perfect cottage, indeed! When we arrived we marveled at how tasteful and cosy the house was. The house was immaculately clean as well. It had all the charm of a 1780's home with its hugely wide floor boards and the most beautiful and incredibly well kept gardens simultaneously having all the current modern conveniences such as a great sound system complete with sonos wired throughout the house.

If you are interested in cooking, the kitchen is incredible! Every appliance and gadget is at your fingertips and the layout is the most user friendly, with a giant stainless steel island-a true working kitchen! The grill could not have been easier to use and practically sparkled when I opened it.

The bedrooms were beautiful and the linens were so soft and snuggly, it made you linger in bed just a bit longer. There are two and a half bathrooms and lovely tiled showers.

Truro is a truly special part of the Cape and we enjoyed the ocean, the bay, and the fresh water lakes. To call this cottage home for a week in Truro would be the perfect compliment.

Impeccable!

The owners have thought of absolutely everything in this home! Not only is it impeccably decorated in a mid-century modern style, but the renovations are so well thought out that it makes this small saltbox home perfectly suitable for a family of 4 to comfortably spend a week there without feeling cramped. I loved the sleek modern kitchen. You will find two butler's pantries. One houses the fridge, a butcher-block counter for food prep and upper cabinets for food storage. The other has open shelving and drawers for the dishes as well as a stocked wine fridge (they just ask that you replace what you use). The kitchen has every possible kind of pot, dish, serving platter, vase and utensil. The centerpiece of the kitchen is a large stainless steel island that is great for food prep - just don't use a scrub sponge on it otherwise you will scratch it. French doors lead out from the kitchen onto a landscaped patio. There is also a small screened in porch with a table and chairs for dinning. You can also choose to take your meals in the beautiful dinning room that has a sideboard stocked with linens and candles should you need them. Up a steep set of stairs (not suitable for young kids or elderly) you will find a nice sized twin-bedded room with its own bathroom. Across the hall is the larger master suite, also with its own bathroom and dressing area. Each bedroom has beautiful built-ins to store everything you bring. Additionally there is a stacked washer/dryer unit tucked away in the hallway closet. We appreciated the technology upgrades to the house -- Great wi-fi, a Sonos sound system that is controlled by a tablet in the office and Netflix.

The owners leave very detailed instruction manuals that will answer all of your questions and made themselves readily available via text the whole time we were there.

Worth noting that Jams Market is less than a mile down the road and has everything you could possible need for simple meal prep. Good wine selection, great take away breakfast and lunch options too. We are regular Homeaway renters (2-4/year) and would highly recommend renting this home! We hope to make it an annual thing.

Beautifully restored home with modern amenities

What a great Outer Cape week. This perfectly renovated historic home has a sleek, modern kitchen with every possible pot, pan, bowl, vase and kitchen gadget that we needed to cook wonderful meals at our temporary home, and a screened porch for enjoying ever meal. Sonos over the built-in speakers, and Netflix on the TV, for the few times we turned on the tube. The house has so many fun nooks and crannies, including one nook stocked with books perfect for a Cape Cod vacation. Outside we found a front yard filled with roses, a pot of basil just outside of the kitchen door, and gorgeous landscaping all around. We were about two minutes from town, and within 5-10 minutes from our bay and ocean beaches of choice (Corn Hill and Head of Meadow). Highly recommended!

A Great Truro Week at the BIG HOUSE

The "Big House" experience on Depot Rd. in Truro was absolutely perfect. The home is extraordinaryl tasteful...perfectly lovely. Everything from the welcome packet on the counter, the spotless clean interior and exterior, and the top quality appliances and furnishings started the experience. We met neighbors, the gardener, and the cleaning lady, and everyone was so welcoming. Thank you to the fantastic owners for an excellent vacation!
